Leona Schoeck
Leona Schoeck, age 78 of Brooklyn, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2003. She was born December 29, 1924 the daughter of Neusome and Doris (Wells) Taylor. She married Thomas Schoeck June 16, 1945 and he survives. Leona has lived in Brooklyn for 30 years. She was preceded in death by her father.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Schoeck is survived by two daughters, Robin Schoeck of Holly and Karen Terry of Clarkston; her mother, Doris Taylor; one sister, Velene Tesch; two grandsons, Eric Nehring and Blaine Nehring; and two great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service was held Saturday, April 5, 2003 at the Jenter & Braun Funeral Home, Brooklyn Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, 101 Simpson Dr., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0752.
Edna M. James
Edna M. James, age 90, of Manchester, passed away April 5, 2003. Edna was born June 12, 1912 in Adrian the daughter of Frank and Minnie (Barbara) Miller. She married Walter James and he preceded her in death in 1963.
Mrs. James is survived by her son Walter W. (Nancy) James of Brooklyn; daughters, Mabel (Bob Sr.) Stanton of Manchester; Margaret Schiffer of Toledo, OH, and Frances (Terry) Abbey of Napoleon; 16 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Edna was preceded in Death by three brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 10, 2003 from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. at the Jenter & Braun Funeral Home, Brooklyn Chapel. Burial will be in Norvell Township Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Michigan Visiting Nurses.
Paul B. Deem
Paul B. Deem, age 88 of Addison, died on Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Provincial House in Adrian.
Lois A. Spencer
Lois A. Spencer, 77, of Onsted died at home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of Lenawee on Friday, March 28, 2003. She was born October 22, 1925 in Blissfield, the daughter of Rolland and Esther (Lehman) Horton. She was married to Gerald E. Spencer in 1946 and he preceded her in death on November 6, 2001.
Mrs. Spencer was a resident of the area for most of her life. She was employed by Fisher Body in Tecumseh for 20 years, retiring in 1986.
Mrs. Spencer is survived by two daughters, Joy A. (James) DeLisle of Grass Lake and Judith "Judy" A. (Bud) Cote of Onsted; one sister, Janet (Keith) Perkins of Onsted; four grandchildren and one great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one son, Gerald R.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 1 at the Tecumseh Chapel of Couture-Handler Funeral Homes at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dick Blank officiating. Interment will follow at Lenawee Hills Memorial Gardens in Tecumseh. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lenawee.
LeRoy F. Montgomery
LeRoy F. Montgomery, 83, passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2003 in Livonia after a prolonged illness.
Mr. Montgomery was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis (Wickter), two brothers, and one sister. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. David (Jil) Matthews of Livonia, two grandsons, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Montgomery had lived in Brooklyn since 1970. He was very involved in York Rite Masonry in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio.
A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, April 6 at 4 p.m. at the Tecumseh Masonic Temple, 700 Bishop Reed Dr., Tecumseh, MI. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Rev. William W. Harvey
William "Bill" Harvey of Portland, Oregon died on December 21, 2002 at age 89. He was born on April 13, 1913 in Juneau, Alaska. He served as a minister of the Presbyterian Church (USA) from 1941 until his retirement in 1986, serving the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church from 1959 to 1979. Even after retirement he continued leading a prayer group and stayed in touch with many former parishioners.
He was an avid gardener who loved sharing flowers and plants with others. Rev. Harvey enjoyed many years as a leader at the American Youth Foundation's Camp Miniwanca at Stony Lake, Michigan. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of the active chapter of Phi Gamma Delta at Western Michigan University.
In 1945, he married Nola Rhoad who preceded him in death in 1988. Rev. Harvey is survived by daughter Nancy (Ron) Gronowski and grandson Ben of Lake Oswego, Oregon and daughter Mary Harvey (Bruce Chaffin) of DeWitt, Michigan.
A memorial service celebrating Rev. Harvey's life will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Battle Creek. Memorials may be made to the Battle Creek Boychoir or the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church.
Virginia T. Campbell
Virginia T. Campbell of Leslie, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at the age of 100. Surviving are two children, Myra Breakey of Clark Lake and Tom Townsend of Jackson; 14 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and three stepsons, Dr. Robert Campbell, Fredrick Campbell and Andrew Campbell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Harlan Campbell; two sons, Eugene Townsend jr. and Robert Townsend; and seven brothers and sisters.
Virginia was a very loving and caring person. She was a devoted member of her church. As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A memorial service, remembering Virginia's 100 years, will be held at the Leslie United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 5, 2003 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Janet Richardson officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Leslie United Methodist Church or to the charity of your choice.
Madelene E. Rumsey
Madelene E. Rumsey, age 76 years, of Onsted, went to be with the Lord on March 27, 2003 at Provincial House Nursing Home in Adrian.
She was born on January 30, 1927 in Paulding, Ohio, the daughter of James and Anna (Miller) Grunden. Madelene married Raymond Rumsey on October 10, 1962 in Paulding, Ohio. He preceded her in death on August 19, 1991.
Surviving Madelene are four step-sons, Raymond and Barbara Rumsey of Brooklyn, Robert and Mary Rumsey of Napoleon, Joseph Rumsey of Michigan Center and James and Deborah Rumsey of Adrian; several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; six brothers and sisters, Imogene E. and Jeff Hirsch of Onsted, Linda and Richard Tolintino of Chicago, Ill., James and Colleene Grunden of Ohio City, Ohio, Elwood and Norma Grunden of Butler, Ind., Sandra Hirsch of Antwerp, Ohio and DeWayne and Lori Grunden of Hicksville, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, step-daughter, Ruth Ann Reid and brother, Robert Grunden.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2003 at the Dunn Chapel, Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Onsted with Pastor Philip A. Jones, officiating. Interment was made in Maple Shade Cemetery in Onsted. Memorials are suggested to the Sand Lake Fire Department and Rescue Unit or to Provincial House Nursing Home. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
William A. ("Bill") Sigmund
William A. ("Bill") Sigmund of Jackson, MI, passed away at Vista Grande Villa in Jackson, March 18, 2003 at the age of 88.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, June Thompson of Villa Park, IL; nephew, Arthur W. Sigmund, Jr. "Ty" of Atlanta, GA; niece, Marjorie (Ralph) Lipscomb of Naperville, IL; sister-in-law, Mary (Jack) Saite of Murrysville, PA; and many additional loving nieces, nephews and close friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Violet ("Vi") to whom he was married for 62 years; his brother, Arthur Sigmund; and sister, Charlotte Gill.
Bill was born on June 18, 1914 in Naperville, IL. After graduating from high school, he attended North West University night school while working for Kraft Foods Company, starting in 1933. After traveling as an Internal Auditor for several years, Mr. Sigmund and his wife were married in June of 1940. As an Office Manager of the Sales Branch, Bill and Vi moved to Akron, Columbus, and Cincinnati, OH. He was then promoted, and returned to Chicago to supervise 26 sales branch offices in the Midwest part of our country.
From 1943 to 1946, Mr. Sigmund served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force; Troop Carrier Wing; 9th Air Force, based in England and France. He flew C-47's and gliders.
After the Kraft Foods Company returned him and his wife to Chicago, they traveled most of the time. United Airlines awarded Bill with their "Million Mile Award" in 1955. For this reason, Mr. Sigmund bought a McDonald's franchise, as he and his wife said, "to move to a city we could call home." In 1959, Bill and Vi opened their first McDonald's in Jackson, ending with eight McDonald's in Jackson, Adrian, Albion and Tecumseh.
Mr. Sigmund and his wife, Violet, were active in the following organizations: Jackson County Draft Board (6 years), Chamber of Commerce (2 years), Rose Festival Week (15 years, President for 5 years), Junior Achievement Board (3 years), Space Center Board (7 years), Midwest Bank, Michigan National Bank (12 years), Defense Orientation Conference Assn. (15 years with this military organization), Jackson Foundation Board (4 years), Honorary Chairman, Arthritic Assn., and Crippled Children's Assn. Mr. Sigmund also belonged to the Lions Club for 30 years and was President for one year, the Masons for 40 years, and the Shrine Club for 30 years. Bill's McDonald Corporation activities include receiving the first "Ronald McDonald Service Award," which only five are given out in the United States each year. He also belonged to the National Operators Advertising Board for 3 years, and the Michigan State Operators Assn., which he was President for 2 years.
Mr. Sigmund thoroughly enjoyed traveling world-wide with his wife, and flying. He first soloed in 1934 and was an active pilot until 1985. Bill was also passionate about the McDonalds that he and his wife were owners and operators of. They were not only his business but his great pleasure.
Services were held at the Wetherby Chapel, Jackson, MI on Friday, March 21, 2003 with the Rev. Ray Bruce officiating. A private intermenty will take place in Chapel Hills Garden West Cemetery, Oakbrook Terrace, IL. Georgine Kilbride
Georgine Kilbride, age 70 of Brooklyn, passed away peacefully at home on March 24, 2003.
She was born in Toledo, Ohio on Jan. 26, 1933, the daughter of George and Helen (Sypniewski) Good. Mrs. Kilbride married James R. on Feb. 21, 1953 in Angola, Ind., and he preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1988.
She was employed with Ryder Service until her retirement in the 1990s. Georgine is survived by her children, Joni (David) Baranowski and James M. (Philarie) Kilbride; parents, George and Helen Good; two grandchildren; brothers Clarence Good and George (Judy) Good; sisters, Sharon Althaus and Donna (Bill) Thompson.
Visitation will be on Thursday, March 27, 2003 at the Jenter & Braun Funeral Home, Brooklyn Chapel, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the Pastor John Masters officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Hillsdale.
