Donna Marie Mall
Donna Marie Mall, age 57, of Montgomery, formerly of Norvell, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at W. A. Foote Memorial Hospital in Jackson. She was born on Nov. 22, 1946 in Highland Park, Mich., the daughter of William and Margaret Goldsborough. She was a 1964 graduate of Fordson High School in Dearborn. She married Richard J. Mall on June 21, 1974 and he survives. She had belonged to the Norvell Lake Association.
Surviving besides her husband are her son, Steve L. Nemeth of Westland; sister, Deanna Bell of Concord; and brother, Robert Goldsborough of Norvell.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at the George White Funeral Home in Reading with Father Thomas Butler officiating. Interment followed in Maplewood Cemetery in Reading.
Charles Herbert Denton Jr.
Charles Herbert Denton Jr., a former Brooklyn resident, died on Nov. 24, 2003 in Grayling at the age of 69.
Amy Janine (Hartsuff) Whitaker
Amy Janine (Hartsuff) Whitaker, Michigan, age 39 of Clarklake, passed away Nov. 18, 2003, in the loving care of her family and Hospice. Born Oct. 2, 1964 in Jackson, Mich., Amy graduated from Columbia Central High School in 1982. She graduated from Western Michigan University and pursued a journalism career, which included newspaper writing for The Brooklyn Exponent, editor of the Parma West County Press, editor of the Michigan Center Journal and editor of the Town Meeting Newspaper of Elk Rapids, Mich. She also worked in television editing for Channel 9-10 News of Cadillac, Mich. In 2000, Amy joined the Peace Corps and was assigned in Latvia where she taught English to Latvian high school students.
Amy is survived by her parents, Maurice and Carole Hartsuff of Clarklake; two sisters, Deborah Hartsuff of Jackson and Beverly Jones of Traverse City; niece, Sansaray Jones; two nephews, Nathan Hartsuff and Francisco Jones; grandmother, Margaret Hartsuff; former husband Gino Whitaker; a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins; and many dear friends including Lilija and Justs Gutmane of Latvia.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at Borek Jennings Funeral Home, Braun Chapel in Brooklyn. Visitation was held on Friday, November 21 at the funeral home. Per Amy's wishes, she will be cremated. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Universalist Unitarian Church of East Liberty.
Lois Marie Cheetham
Lois Marie Cheetham, age 78, passed away at home on Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, under the loving care of her husband, Robert. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert; two sons, Robert (Inga) Cheetham Jr. of Montana and Scott (Shellie) Cheetham of Clarklake; two daughters, DeeAnne Cheetham of Cement City and Cynthia (Stephen) Etsler of Indiana; three sisters, Ruth Shewman of Jackson, Joyce Nichols of Florida and Eula (George) Donovan of Washington; 10 grandchildren, Lincoln (Richelle) Cheetham of Montana, Stoney (Christy) Burke of Cement City, Kurtis Cheetham of North Dakota, Jennifer (James) Riggs of Florida, Andrew Etsler of Connecticut, Elizabeth (Mark) Norris of Ohio, Kate Moore of Indiana, Jared Cheetham of Clarklake, Renee Etsler of Jackson and Ann Marie Etsler of Jackson; great-grandchildren, Samantha Cheetham of Montana, Wyatt Cheetham of Montana, Brinae Bain of Cement City, Jessica Burke of Cement City, Thomas Cheetham of North Dakota, Austin Cheetham of North Dakota, Morganne Riggs of Florida and Alex Riggs of Florida. She was preceded in death by a son, Theodore Cheetham; parents, Charles and Gertrude Shewman; and brother, Donald Shewman.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thanksgiving Day from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. only. Services for Mrs. Cheetham will be on Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Nichols-Arthur Funeral Home, Michigan Center. The Rev. Loyal Wiemer will officiate and Interment will be at the Cement City Cemetery.
Mrs. Cheetham valued education and shared her lifelong love of reading with all who knew her. June Marie Beal
June Marie Beal, age 81 years, of Adrian, formerly of Onsted, passed away Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003 at Charlotte Stephenson Manor in Adrian. She was born June 4, 1922 in Onsted, the daughter of Zearl and Florine (Crandall) Stoddard. June was a graduate of Onsted High School. She attended County Normal School in Blissfield and received her degree in teaching from Adrian College. She married Chester A. Beal on Aug. 7, 1948 at North Rome Baptist Church. He preceded her in death on June 1, 2000. June taught rural school and at Adrian Public Schools. She was a member of North Rome Baptist Church and Maple Avenue Bible Church in Adrian. She was a former North Rome Grange member and Michigan Retired Teachers Association member. June loved all church activities.
She is survived by her two sons, Kim and Gay Beal of Washington, Mich. and Keith and Judy Beal of Liberty, S.C.; four grandchildren, Alison Beal, Stephanie Beal, Michelle Beal and Jason Beal; two brothers, Leslie and Midge Stoddard of Addison and LeRoy and Norma Jean Stoddard of Union Lake; one sister, Ramona Stoddard of Adrian. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at the North Rome Baptist Church with Rev. Fritz Kruse and Rev. Lloyd Jewett officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dunn Chapel, Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Onsted. Interment will be made in North Rome Cemetery in Manitou Beach. Wallace J. Duffy
Wallace J. Duffy, of Clarklake, passed away Nov. 20, 2003 at age 68. He retired from Consumers Energy and was in the heating and cooling business for more than 50 years. He loved the farm life, shared his sons' passion for sprint cars, attended the National Heavyweight Horse Pulls in Hillsdale every year and was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and uncle.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Helen; two sons, Michael Duffy of Clarklake and Daniel (Lori) Duffy of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Janet (David) Chamberlain of Jackson; his father, Leo Duffy of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Esther Duffy.
A memorial service was held at Watson Funeral Home Chapel in Jackson on Monday with Pastor Fritz Kruse and Pastor Floyd Jewett officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Great Lakes Hospice.
Viola C. Weide
Viola C. Weide, age 75 of Somerset Center, passed away Nov. 17, 2003 at W. A. Foote Memorial Hospital. Viola was born Aug. 19, 1928 in Detroit, the daughter of Stephen and Anna Mary (Binert) Ryba. She married Russell Weide on Aug. 23, 1947 and he preceded her in death earlier this year on July 30, 2003. Viola is survived by her children, James (Jill) Weide of Addison, Gregory Weide of Somerset Center, Eugene (Kathy Walther) Weide of Sterling, David Weide and Brenda Pfund of Somerset Center, Diane (Larry) Kellenberger of Jonesville; 11 grandchildren; and her sister, Delphine Moore. Mrs. Weide was preceded in death by her son, Michael in 1971 and her sister, Rose Normandin. A Celebration of Viola's life was held on Friday, Nov. 21, 2003 with prayers at the Borek Jennings Funeral Home, Braun Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Rita Catholic Church where Father Lehr Barkenquest officiated.
Memorials may be given to the Michigan Cancer Society and envelopes are available at the funeral home. Interment was at St. Hedwig's Cemetery in Dearborn Heights.
Larry Lee Niswander
Larry Lee Niswander, age 62 years, of Onsted, passed away Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born on May 14, 1941, in Bluffton, Ohio, the son of Karl M. and Louise M. (Cook) Niswander. He graduated from Columbus Grove High School in 1959. Larry attended Ohio Northern University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in mechanical engineering in 1964. On Dec. 1, 1963, he married Karen S. Weitz in Findlay, Ohio, and she survives. His work in the plastic industry brought him and his family to the Onsted area in 1978.
Larry was very active in the community and his church. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church of the Irish Hills where he was an elder and treasurer. He was a member of Kiwanis where he served as treasurer for many years, Devils Lake Yacht Club, Society of Plastic Engineers, National Threshers Association and Experimental Aircraft Association. Larry loved sailing, flying and John Deere tractors.
Surviving Larry is his loving wife, Karen, of 39 years; daughter, Erika and Dan Kope and three granddaughters, Sarah, Jennifer and Allison Kope of Addison; brother Ronald and Eliane Niswander of Oracle, Ariz.; sister, Rachel Schaadt of Decatur, Ind.; two nephews, two nieces and one great nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Gerald Schaadt.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at St. Mark Lutheran Church of the Irish Hills with Pastor Kelly Smith officiating. Visitation was held at the Dunn Chapel, Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Onsted. Dean E. Wilbur
Dean E. Wilbur of Jackson, a wonderful husband and father, passed away peacefully on Nov. 15, 2003, at the age of 83. He was born in Elkhart, Ind., on Aug. 21, 1920, the oldest son of Ellsworth and Gertrude Wilbur. On Feb. 14, 1948, he married Mildred (Gunn) Wilbur, and she survives. Also surviving are their two children, Leland Wilbur and his wife Shelly (Powers) of Clarklake and Peggy Wilbur and her husband Michael Pease of Cape Cod, Mass.; two grandchildren, Bradford and Michael Pease, also of the Cape; two sisters, Carolyn Reed and her husband Howard, and Marilyn Williams whose husband James is deceased; brother, Lee Wilbur and his wife Pat (Goddard); and numerous friends, cousins, nieces and nephews and loved and respected by many others.
A graduate of Purdue University and a veteran of the Navy in World War II, he worked as a cereal chemist and ultimately retired from Dawn Food Products after 20 years in quality control and research and development at the Jackson plant. He was an active member of the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church for the past 30 years, serving as an elder, prayer group and Bible study leader. He did so much for so many - he always had time to help someone in need - and will be greatly missed.
A Memorial service, led by Rev. Robert Malsack, will be held at noon on Friday, November 21, at the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church with Dean's family receiving friends from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service. Frederick W. Taylor
Frederick W. Taylor, age 87, of Napoleon, passed away in Branson, Mo., Nov. 14, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jacquelyn J.; four daughters, Diana (Jim) Redman, Sandy (Tom) Nelson, Cindy (Mike) Sonnenberg and Natalie (Larry) DeRousse; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was a retiree of Clark Equipment with 43 years of service; life member of the Jackson Shrine Club; past Chaplain of the Jackson Scottish Rite; past Chaplain and past Worshipful Master of Napoleon Lodge No. 301 Free and Accepted Masons; and in 2001 was the Napoleon Lodge and Jackson County Mason of the Year; and member of the Napoleon United Methodist Church.
In his retirement, he and his wife loved to work in the yard and travel. Services will be held at the funeral home Wednesday, noon with the Rev. Robert Freysinger officiating. Interment will be at Roseland Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Tuesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with Masonic Memorial Honors at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions in his memory be made to the Masonic DeMoley or charity of the giver's choice.
Shyrl Mitchell
Shyrl Mitchell, age 37 years, of Tipton, passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at home after an extremely courageous and strong battle with cancer. She was a member of the Long Lick Baptist Church at Stamping Ground, Ky., and was baptized Aug. 31, 2003 in Elk Horn Creek.
She was born June 24, 1966 in Jackson, the daughter of Woodrow and Virginia (Wright) Butler. She was a 1984 graduate of Leslie High School and was employed in the home health care field. She married David Mitchell on Dec. 26, 1995 in Gorham Baptist Church in Jackson and he survives. Also surviving are her parents, Virginia Butler and adoptive father, John Warner of Tipton; three children, Brandon Butler and his fiancée Brittany Terwilliger of Tipton, Terry Petrie and Ashley Petrie, both of Tipton; her sisters, Diana Campbell (Hodson) and Robert Hodson and Lana Blair, both of Jackson; close friend and good caregiver, L.G. Adams; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and loved and cherished by many others. She was preceded in death by her father, Woodrow.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, in the Dunn Chapel, Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Onsted, with Pastor Glen Redmon and Pastor Philip A. Jones officiating. Interment was made in the Franklin Township Cemetery at Tipton. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Lenawee or the Union Gospel Church or Long Lick Baptist Church.
Jacques "Jack" R. Condra
Jacques "Jack" R. Condra, age 72, of Brooklyn, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003 at home under the care of Heartland Home Health Care and Hospice. Jack was born April 30, 1931, in Addison, the son of George and Mildred (Renner) Condra. He was a veteran and served our country in the U.S. Army.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Schooler Condra. Jack is survived by his children, John (Cathie) Condra of Garden City and Janet (Doug) Bayes of Florida; his second wife, Sharon (Coffman) Condra of Brooklyn; her children, Michael (Ellen) Coffman of Milford, Cheryl (Earl) Nuckolls of Howell, Cynthia (Jim) Lester of Grass Lake and Linda (John) Wyne of Brooklyn; three grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild; two brothers Robert Condra and William (Mary Jo) Condra all of Indianapolis, Ind.
A celebration of Jack's life was held on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003 at the Borek Jennings Funeral Home, Braun Chapel in Brooklyn, with the Rev. Robert Malsack officiating.
