Walter J. Gardner

Walter J. Gardner of Omena died July 12 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. He was 86.
Mr. Gardner was born on Aug. 11, 1912, in Little Falls, N.Y. Formerly of Farmington Hills, he had been a summer resident of Omena and Northport for almost 50 years before making Omena his permanent address. He was president of the R. L. Polk company in Detroit.
Surviving are daughters Kathryn Bosco of Phoenix, Ariz. and Omena and Carolyn Calkins of Franklin, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Leelanau Memorial Health Center.
Beatrice Marie Bowen

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Church for Beatrice Marie Edson Bowen, who died July 16 in her Northport home. She was 93.
Dr. Bowen was born on Aug. 7, 1905, in Hudsonville, Mich., the oldest child of Glen and Wilhelmina (Boldt) Edson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Max.
She earned a Ph. D. at the University of Michigan, and held teaching and administrative positions in the Ottawa, Coopersville, Grand Rapids and Livonia school systems. She also held positions with the universities of Wayne State, Iowa, Maryland, Connecticut and California. Parents and students loved to hear her read poetry, mythology and children's literature, and she enjoyed organic gardening, organic chickens and creative cooking.
She was honored for her lifelong commitment to the Democratic Party by state and national dignitaries in 1996. After retirement as an educator, she owned Timber Shores Resort, The Carriage Shop and Plum Lane Inn.
Surviving are a son, Edward of Grand Marais; daughters Susan Hammersley and Mary Anne Taylor, both of Northport; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Catherine L. Allgaier

A funeral Mass has been held for Catherine L. Allgaier, who died July 13 at her Traverse City home. She was 64.
Mrs. Allgaier was born in Missaukee County on March 3, 1935, the daughter of Leo and Elsie (Bonewit) Brunett. On Oct. 22, 1993, she married Elmer Allgaier, who survives.
Mrs. Allgaier was a retired registered nurse for Munson Medical Center, where she worked for 25 years in the recovery room.
Also surviving are children Jeanne A. (Joseph) Deegan of Suttons Bay, Nancy (Wayne) Uzzle of Mason, Mich., Bill (Joann) Steinebach Jr. of Jupiter, Fla.; James (Karol) Steinebach of Grand Rapids, Mary (Cal) Ver Duin of Grand Rapids, Catherine (Bill) Lugten of Bridgeport, Susan (Matthew) O'Brien of Traverse City and John (Nanci) Steinebach of Boynton Beach, Fla; stepchildren Linda Burrows, Judy (Bob) Robinson, Tim (Paula) Allgaier and Bill (Jean) Allgaier of Traverse City; 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William J. Steinebach on June 3, 1986; sisters Helda Evarts and Mary Steinebach; and a brother, Andrew Paul Brunett.
Burial will be held at a later date at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
Richard M. Catton Sr.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at First Baptist Church in Bartow, Fla., for former Northport resident Richard M. Catton Sr., who died July 19 at Lakeland (Fla.) Regional Medical Center. He was 87.
Mr. Catton was born in Detroit on Dec. 20, 1911. For 25 years he served as a custodian for Northport Schools and a security guard for the Northport Cottage Owners Association. For the past 17 years he lived in Bartow, where he was a volunteer for Bartow Memorial Hospital and secretary of the Fort Men's Sunday School Class at Bartow First Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby B. Catton; sons Richard Catton of Suttons Bay, James Catton of Honor and Alden Catton of Crosswell; a daughter, Beverly Merry of Gaylord; two brothers, John Catton and Robert Catton, both of Detroit; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Catton, and a daughter, Dorothy Emily Catton.
Shirley B. Kalember

Funeral services were held yesterday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland for Shirley B. Kalember, who died July 17 at Munson Medical Center. She was 78.
Mrs. Kalember was born in Leland on March 30, 1921, the daughter of George and Ellen (Brown) Steffens. In Detroit on Oct. 29, 1943, she married Dewey D. Kalember, who survives.
Mrs. Kalember was a 1939 graduate of Leland High School and raised as a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland. She left in 1943 to live in Grosse Pointe Woods until 1969, at which time she moved to Traverse City. She was a homemaker and member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City who enjoyed gardening, crafts, bridge, reading and square dancing. Her joy was her husband and her family.
Also surviving are two sons, Duane D. (Cookie) Kalember of Stone Mountain, Ga. and Suttons Bay and David M. (Marcie) Kalember of Marietta, Ga.; a daughter, Dee Ellen (Jim) Allen of Gobles, Mich.; two sisters, Elaine (Walter) Couturier of Traverse City and Fern Hawley of Suttons Bay; two brothers, Bruce (Ann) Steffens of Albertville, Ala., and Fred Steffens of Northport; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Marie, Dorothy and Eleanor; two brothers, Leonard and Bob; and a son, Glenn Allan Kalember in 1966.

John 'Jack' Appel

Funeral services were held yesterday for Indianapolis, Ind., resident John Carey "Jack" Appel, who died July 15. He was 83.
Mr. Appel retired in 1992 as chairman and president of Gregory & Appel Ins. after 50 years. He was a graduate of Princeton University, where he was captain of the basketball team, and a captain in the Army Air Force in Okinawa during World War II. He held several offices within services organizations in Indiana. He was also a summer resident of Leelanau County.
Surviving are his wife, Jane (Adams) Appel; sons John S., Fred S. and Stephen C.; stepsons Steve Lanthrop, John and Jim Thompson; stepdaughters Rae Wilson, Sally Stephens, Julie Moses, Jane Stephens, Jean Corey and Julie Steck; a sister, Eleanor Golden-Hitz; 35 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Noble of Indiana or The Orchard School. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Donaleen Mae Shimek

A memorial service was held Saturday at Glen Lake Community Reformed Church for Donaleen Mae Shimek, who died July 14 at her Maple City home. She was 64.
Mrs. Shimek was born in Bear Lake on Nov. 12, 1934, the daughter of Donavon and Orabell (Lowery) Thompson. One June 20, 1953, she married Joseph A. Shimek, who survives.
Mrs. Shimek was a homemaker who assisted her husband in the family cherry orchard. She served on various church committees at the Reformed Church, and also volunteered on committees in her children's schools. She worked to help other cancer patients, and her attitude served as an inspiration to all who knew her. She particularly enjoyed her family, friends, home and flower gardens.
Also surviving are a daughter, Agnes (Tad) Carter of Maple City; two sons, Keith (Kellie) Shimek of Maple City and Mike (Mary) Shimek of Owosso; a sister, Yvonne Kaldahl of Myrtle Beach. S.C.; a brother, Edward Thompson of Bear Lake; two stepsisters, Judy (Tom) Johnson of Manistee and Katherine Schafer of Mt. Pleasant; a stepbrother, Donavon Thompson of California; stepmother Ilene Thompson of Manistee and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant stepsister.
Burial was in the Cleveland Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society for research work on ovarian cancer.
Mary Agnes Heilman

A Mass of Christian burial was held Monday at St. Francis Catholic Church for Empire native Mary Agnes (Deering) Heilman, who died July 9 at Grand Traverse Pavilions. She was 84.
Mrs. Heilman was born in Empire on April 29, 1915, the eldest child of Agnes Helena (Mahoney) and Thomas Zavier Deering. In Reed City in August of 1945, she married Roy A. Heilman, who preceded her in death in 1962.
After graduating from St. Francis in 1933, she obtained her cosmetology license and ran a small shop in Traverse City. She and her husband lived in Reed City for a number of years and she worked in her brother Paul's market in Traverse City. She was a member of St. Francis Catholc Church and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and looked forward to regular summer gatherings at her family's property on Glen Lake.
Surviving are her daughter, Anne Marie (Heilman Stevens) and husband Gary Sherman of Grand Rapids; brothers James "Barney" (Lil) Deering and Paul M. (Marlene) Deering, both of Traverse City; and two grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Eugene Deering, and a sister, Kathleen Helena Stevens.
Interment was in Grand Traverse Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation.
Elsie Helen Fulmer

Funeral services were held Sunday for Northport resident Elsie Helen Fulmer, who died July 15 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. She was 88.
Mrs. Fulmer was born in Brownwood, Mo., on Jan. 29, 1911, the daughter of Benjamin and Stella (Goodman) Musgraves. On Dec. 13, 1930, in Toledo, Ohio, she married Fay C. Fulmer, who died March 1, 1979.
Mrs. Fulmer was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Trinity Church in Northport.
Surviving are a son, Gary (Linda) Fulmer of Northport; a sister, Eva Ashcraft of Brownwood, Mo., a brother, Linus Musgraves of St. Louis, Mo.; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers Ervin, Frankie and Glen; sisters Neva and Lillian; a brother-in-law, Roland B. Fulmer, and a grandson, Jason.
