Rosemary H. Henshaw

A memorial Mass was held Jan. 21 in California for seasonal Leelanau County resident Rosemary Hall Henshaw, who died on Jan. 17. She was 85.
She was born in Lansing in 1917, the only child of Benjamin Franklin Hall and Benedict Marie Kelly. She was preceded in death by her husband, George.
Mrs. Henshaw and her husband vacationed regularly on South Lake Leelanau beginning in the 1930’s. In more recent years, she spent summers on Glen Lake at the home of her eldest daughter, Deborah (Jerry) Morawski, who survives.
Also surviving are her daughters, Molly and Georgeanne; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Alec Jackson Beyer

A private memorial service was held Sunday in Eagle for Alec Jackson Beyer who died Jan. 27 in Suttons Bay. He was six months old.
Born July 10, 2002, he was the son of Chuck and Amy Beyer, who survive.
He is also survived by his sister, Emily Early Beyer; maternal grandfather, Bill Johnson of Eagle, and paternal grandparents William and Janet Beyer of Indian River.

Vivian Agnes Shomin

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Strongheart Center in Peshawbestown for Vivian Agnes Shomin of Suttons Bay, who died Feb. 1 at Munson Medical Center. She was 73.
She was born in Omena on June 3, 1929, the daughter of Silas and Jessi (AhKa) Yannot. Her husband, Frank L. Shomin of East Jordan, survives.
Mrs. Shomin was devoted to her family and her faith in God. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, playing bingo and going to yard sales.
Also surviving are her four sons, Cody (Tanya) Yannot of Ypsilanti, Leonard Yannot of Pekin, Ill., and Francis J. Shomin and Pete Shomin, both of Peshawbestown; her six daughters, Angela Himebaugh of Good Hart, Lillian M. John (Beth Conner) of Spring Lake, Therese (Phillip) Keller of Cross Village, Judy Shomin and Christine (Alberto) Loredo, both of Peshawbestown, and Elizabeth M. Shomin (Martin San Juan) of East Jordan; her brother, George Yannot Sr., and her sister, Elsie Dudley, both of Peshawbestown; 38 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, Percy John; her infant daughter, Patricia M. Shomin, her infant son, Daniel J. Shomin; her brothers, Richard and Edward; her sister, Florine; and four grandchildren.
Burial was planned in Hillcrest Cemetery in Omena.
Harry H. Johns Sr.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City for the Rev. Harry H. Johns Sr. of Peshawbestown, who died at his home on Jan. 31. He was 87.
He was born April 3, 1916, in Northport, the son of Amos and Alice (Wayashe) Johns. On July 3, 1938, he married Ida Mae Anderson in Elk Rapids.
Mr. Johns was a proud member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. He was a retired pastor and member of the Kewadin Indian Mission Church.
As a young man he was a semi-professional baseball player; he coached his daughters’ All Indian Women’s softball team.
He is survived by his children, the Rev. Thomas (Phyllis) Johns of Kewadin, Harry (Carmen) Johns Jr. of Traverse City, Raymond (Myra) Johns of Central Lake, Cheryl (John) Kukla of Traverse City, Debra (Michael) Frankenberger of Traverse City, Connie Two Crow of Peshawbestown, Edward (Cindi) John of Northport, Catherine (Dion) Crowley of Peshawbestown and Gary (Carol) John of Traverse City; his sister, Evelyn (Clarence) Manitowosh of Northport; 23 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Burial was planned in Kewadin Indian Mission Cemetery.
Irene M. Serven

Traverse City resident Irene M. Serven died Feb. 2 at Munson Medical Center. She was 94.
She was born May 13, 1908, in Alpena, the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Perrault) LaLiberte.
Mrs. Serven was the mother of Suttons Bay resident Laurene Kolberg.
Lee Roy A. Shalda

Funeral services were held Monday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Glen Arbor for Empire resident Lee Roy A. Shalda who died Feb. 4 at the Maple Valley Nursing Home in Maple City. He was 84.
He was born Nov. 3, 1919, in Cleveland Township, the son of John and Irene (Wheeler) Shalda. On March 24, 1956, in Bellaire, he married the former Fae E. Hope, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Army. From 1952-1966, he worked in maintenance at the Air Force radar station in Empire. From 1996-2000, he ran the Shalda locksmith and saw sharpening business in Empire.
He was a member of the American Legion in Leelanau County and the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Glen Arbor.
Also surviving are his two daughters, Anne Michelle (John) Everett of Marshall and Shirley G. (Dale) Kucera of Mt. Pleasant; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Luella Fehrenbach, and his brother, Lawrence Shalda.
Memorial contributions may be directed to either the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Glen Arbor or the Maple Valley Nursing Home.
Otto Alden Mork

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Suttons Bay for life long resident Otto Alden Mork who died Feb. 18 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. He was 75.
He was born in Suttons Bay on July 14, 1927, the son of Harold and Dorothy (Solem) Mork. On Sept. 30, 1950, in Gills Pier, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Kalchik, who survives.
Mr. Mork was a farmer who continued to farm until his retirement. He then became a developer and continued to oversee the homestead’s daily activities. He also worked as an auto mechanic.
He served as a Leelanau County commissioner for 22 years, and as its chairman for six years. He also served on the Mental Health Board for Grand Traverse County and as a representative to the Leelanau County Commission on Aging.
He is also survived by eight children, Ken (Linda) Mork, Greg (Michelle) Mork, Sandy “Cookie” (Dale) Herman and Bruce “Butch” (Pam) Mork, all of Suttons Bay, Gretchen (Roger) Harnack of Port Angeles, Wash., Susan (Richard) Fall of Traverse City, Peggy (Mike) Schlaefflin of Lake Leelanau, and Harold (Mary) Mork of Aurora, Ill.; brothers and sisters, Darwin Mork of Waterford, Charlotte (Chuck) Guisgand of Garden City, Jerry (Betty) Mork of Northport, Thea (Ray) Kellogg of Northport; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mass Intentions or to the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
Gordon L. Hohnke

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Good Harbor for Gordon L. Hohnke of St. Petersburg, Fla., who died Jan. 27. He was 49.
He was born May 13, 1953, the son of Benjamin and Margaret Hohnke of Leland, who survive.
He was a 1971 graduate of Leland High School. He later studied business at Ferris State University and Cleary College.
For the past 23 years, he lived in St. Petersburg where he was employed for many years at Bob Lee Tire and Battery.
He was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Also surviving are his four brothers, Elmer (Christine) of Leland; George of Sacramento, Calif.; Alan (Sue) of Russell, Pa.; and Douglas of Traverse City.
Friends may call Thursday, 5-7 p.m., at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Good Harbor.
