Jack Nicely

Solon Township resident Jack Nicely died Jan. 27 at Grand Traverse Pavilions. He was 81.
Born Aug. 28, 1921, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of Emmett and Grace (Hurtt) Nicely. On Dec. 29, 1984, at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City, he married the former Marilyn Lautner, who survives.
He served as a United States Marine during World War II in the South Pacific from 1942 to 1946.
A retired medical administrator in Traverse City, he was associated with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan for a number of years and served as CEO of the Professional Standards Review Organization.
He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club of Traverse City. He loved all animals, especially dogs.
He is also survived by two sons, William (Jeanette) Nicely of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Jack (Pat) Nicely of Grand Rapids; three stepchildren, Michael (Amy) Lautner of Cincinnati, Ohio, David Lautner of Long Beach, Calif., and Marsha (Larry) Stratton of Traverse City; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three stepchildren and four step-grandchildren.
Mr. Nicely was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Jean (Troth) Nicely; and one brother, William Nicely, who died during World War II.
Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Ole H. Sollie

Services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City for former Suttons Bay resident Ole H. Sollie who died Jan. 8 at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac. He was 95.
Born May 5, 1907, in Tingvoli, Norway, he was the son of Henrik and Marie (Wagbo) Sollie. In 1929, he immigrated to the U.S. where in 1931 he met and married the former Anna S. Swanson at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay. She preceded him in death in 2000.
The couple lived in Traverse City where Mr. Sollie worked as a tool and die maker. They attended the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. In the mid 70’s the couple moved to Cadillac.
Survivors include his daughter, Marie (Don) Rennie of Cadillac; six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Sollie was also preceded in death by his daughter Dorothy Ann; his sister Anna; and brothers Henrik, Einar, Didrick, all of Norway; and Lars of Washington state.
Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of one’s choice.
Theodore J. Kabot

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday at Immaculate Conception Church in Traverse City for Elmwood Township resident Theodore J. Kabot, who died at home on Jan. 31. He was 87.
He was born on April 19, 1915, in Cedar, the son of Joseph and Selma (Schopieray) Kabot. On Oct. 26, 1944, in Cedar, he married the former Clara B. Rice, who preceded him in death on Oct. 24, 2002.
Mr. Kabot was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army. He retired from Leelanau Fruit Company and has been a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church since 1945. He was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, but especially enjoyed dancing.
Surviving are his children, Larry (Paulette Pleva) Kabot, Ronald (Sue Penfold) Kabot, and Rosalinda (Claude) Ockert, all of Traverse City; a brother, Anthony (Mary) Kabot of Richmond, Mich.; sisters Bernadine Galla and Germaine (Edward) Garvin, both of Cedar, and Rosemary (Mel) Varney of Arizona; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were his brothers Edmund, Leo, Frank, Harry and Bernie, and his granddaughter Miranda Kabot.

Allan C. Galloway

Former Leelanau County resident Allan Crawford Galloway died Jan. 15 in Sunsites, Ariz. He was 78.
Born in Chicago on Sept. 30, 1924, Mr. Galloway grew up in Homewood, Ill., and came to Leelanau County in 1935 as a camper. He attended the Leelanau School, where he graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1941.
Mr. Galloway served in the U. S. Army Air Corps as a P-51 fighter pilot and was discharged in 1945 after World War II ended. He graduated from Indiana University in 1948 with a degree in finance and banking and joined Galloway Services, a credit clearinghouse for banks and finance companies.
In 1952, Mr. Galloway married Lucia Harvey of Barrington, R.I., and raised four children—Nancy, Susan, Randy and Elisabeth— in Park Forest and Olympia Fields, Ill. The Galloways moved to Traverse City in 1965 when Mr. Galloway became vice president of Empire National Bank. He was also involved in the formation of the Bay Store in Acme, and invested in Jellystone Camping Resort.
In 1982, Mr. Galloway married Rene Banghart of Interlochen and joined Dick Smith and Company in 1984 as an associate broker. He served as a board member at the Leelanau School, and was a past president of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Grand Traverse.
He and his wife were frequent visitors of Sunsites, which became their permanent home in 2001.

Patricia Ann Bushell

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay for Patricia Ann Bushell of Traverse City who died Jan. 17 at Munson Medical Center. She was 63.
She was born Nov. 16, 1939, in Traverse City, the daughter of Harry F. and Marguerite Rachel (Calhoun) Bushell.
She attended St. Mary’s School in Lake Leelanau and Leland Public School. She graduated from both Northwestern Michigan College and the University of Michigan. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City.
She is survived by her mother, Marguerite Calhoun of Lake Leelanau; her brother, Vernon Fredrick (Karen) Lawson; and her granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harry, and her brother Harry F. Bushell III.
Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Cemetery in Traverse City. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Michigan, 153-1/2 E. Front St., Traverse City, 49684.
Martin R. Selby

A funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Traverse City for Martin R. Selby who died Jan. 11. He was 58.
He was born Nov. 19, 1944, in Bad Axe, the son of C. Clark and Elfrida (Luecke) Selby. On Feb. 24, 1968, in St. Clair, he married the former Marilyn A. Gille, who survives.
He had been a resident of the Traverse City Area since 1983, and was most recently employed with Matrix Group Financial Services.
An avid outdoor enthusiast, he served on the Ski Patrol at Sugar Loaf Resort. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Also surviving are his sons Ryan (Niki) Selby of Maple City and Justin Selby of Traverse City; brother Scheel (Brenda) Selby of Moorehead City, N.C.; sister Madeline (David) Landmann of Cumberland Foreside, Maine; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Department or to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Kenneth Bartell

Lake Leelanau resident Kenneth Bartell died Jan. 17 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport. He was 85.
He was born Feb. 16, 1917, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Reynold T. and Minnie (Kegelman) Bartell. On Dec. 28, 1951, in Angola, Ind., he married the former Pauline Fern Detro, who survives.
Mr. Bartell was a retired carpenter.
Also surviving are his son Earl Bartell, his daughter Margerie Brown, and five grandchildren.
