Alice Applegate Smith

Services will be held tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at the Leelanau Memorial Health Center chapel for long-time East Leland summer resident Alice Applegate Smith who died Dec. 13 in Northport. She was 87.
She was born Aug. 28, 1915, in Orient, Iowa, the daughter of Roscoe and Blanche Applegate. In February 1942 she married Alden Grover Smith who preceded her in death in October 1991.
She was a graduate of The American University in Washington, D.C., an accomplished pianist and a devoted wife.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her son Asa of Fort Thomas, Ky.; her son Alden of Northport; six granddaughters and six great grandchildren.
Services will also be held on a date to be announced in July 2003 at the East Leland Cemetery in Lake Leelanau. Memorial contributions may be made to Interlochen Public Radio, P.O. Box 199, Interlochen, 49643; or to the Mozart Society at 110 Stewart St., Saint Simons Island, Ga. 31522.
Adeline Jacobsen

Burial services will be held in Northport in the spring for Adeline (Ranger) Jacobsen who died Sept. 14 in Cincinnati. She was 96.
She was born May 28, 1906, in Northport to Clara (Spinniken) and Joel Ranger. Her husband, Hans Christian Jacobsen, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Jacobsen was very involved in church and other volunteer activities in her retirement. For much of her life she returned every summer to Leelanau County.
She is survived by her children, Barbara Wood of Pueblo, Colo.; Joan (Grant) Perry of The Woodlands, Texas; Peggy (Bill) Kehrer of Cincinnati; Chris Jacobsen of Interlochen; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were her siblings Effie Barth, Carl, Oren, Rufus and Henry.
Dorothy L. Symons

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay for Dorothy Louise Symons who died Dec. 5 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was 93.
Born in Troy, Ill., on July 1, 1909, she was the daughter of Henry Christian and Louise (Kueker ) Horstman. On April 23, 1936, in Detroit, she married Clayton John Symons, who preceded her in death in February, 2002.
Mrs. Symons was devoted to church activities and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay.
She is survived by her daughter, Dottie (Jim) Brenner of Beverly Hills, four grandsons and two great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were her two daughters, Joan and Judy.
Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or ShareCare of Leelanau County. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Leelanau Memorial Health Center Chapel for Northport resident Alice Applegate Smith who died Dec. 13 at the center. She was 87.
She was born Aug. 28, 1915, in Orient, Iowa, the daughter of Roscoe and Blanche G. (Lambert) Applegate. On Feb. 24, 1942, in Bath, Maine, she married Alden G. Smith, who preceded her in death in 1991.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her two sons, Alden (Marlene) Applegate Smith of Northport and Asa (Jane) Smith of Fort Thomas, Ky.; six granddaughters and six great grandchildren.
Sylvia M. Lehr

A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday at St. Rita/St. Joseph Catholic Church for Maple City resident Sylvia M. Lehr who died Dec. 17 at home. She was 91.
Born Sept. 30, 1911, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Desire and Eugenia (Duveyoung) Dugelar. She married Norman B. Lehr, who preceded her in death in Feb. 1983.
She was a member of St. Rita/St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was devoted to her family, was known for her sense of humor, and enjoyed traveling across the country.
Survivors include her son, Norman B. Lehr Jr. of Maple City; daughter, Sheila Sandula of Maple City; sister Marie (James) Madar of Warren; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Henry and Edward; her sister, Leona; and a granddaughter.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation, Munson Hospice, or Detroit Firefighter’s Widow and Orphan Fund.
Marie Huwe Johnson

Seasonal Leelanau County resident Marie Huwe Johnson died Dec. 11 at her home in Jackson. She was 87.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. Thomas Thompson, formerly of Fort Thomas, Ky.; and her second husband, Claude W. Johnson Jr., also of Fort Thomas.
She is survived by a son, Steve Thompson of Lake Forest, Ill.; daughters Carolyn O’Neil of Lake Forest, Ill.; and Susan Schaffer and Gail Kraai of Jackson; stepsons Robert Johnson of Melbourne, Ky., and Douglas Johnson of Cincinnati; step-daughters Dixie Root of Guilford, Conn.; Liza Love of Windsor, Conn.; Ginger Herndon of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Anne White, Jane Smith, and Nancy Baker of Fort Thomas, Ky; 10 grandchildren and 26 step grandchildren.

William Paul Watkoski

A funeral Mass was to be conducted today at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City for Elmwood Township resident William Paul Watkoski who died Dec. 15. He was 60.
He was born Aug. 18, 1942, in Traverse City, the son of Paul E. and Lois A. (Ashmore) Watkoski. On Nov. 21, 1964, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, he married the former Jean I. Houghton, who survives.
Mr. Watkoski was a 1959 graduate of St. Francis High School. He retired in 1998 after 35 years as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Traverse City. He was a member of the Eagles Club-Aerie No. 383, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1213.
He enjoyed and loved promoting polka music and dancing at the Knights of Columbus for more than 20 years. He also enjoyed growing and harvesting fruits and vegetables for his family and friends.
Also surviving is his daughter, Pamela (Dan) Marsh of Traverse City; two sons, William J. (Lana) Watkoski of Traverse City, and Michael “Mick” Watkoski of Traverse City; three sisters, Sandra (Jerry) VanHuystee of Suttons Bay, Pat (Don) Witkoski of Traverse City, and Cathy (Glenn) Stroop of Holland; and five grandsons.

Cecil Henry Rossman

Funeral services were held Saturday in Milwaukee for Elmwood Township resident Cecil Henry Rossman who died at home Dec. 10. He was 88.
Mr. Rossman was born Feb. 15, 1914, in Milwaukee. In August 1941, in Milwaukee, he married the former Florence Marie Kexel who preceded him in death in 1992.
He is survived by his three children, John (Ann) Rossman of Coral Springs, Fla.; Sue (Larry) Kowalski of Carpentersville, Ill; and Heidi (David) Yaple of Suttons Bay; his sister Claudia Studemann of Greenfield, Wis.; brother John (Barbara) Rossman; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his sister Margaret.
