Gertrude Esther Rieger

A memorial service was held Monday in Jackson for Gertrude Esther Rieger of Elmwood Township who died Dec. 11 at Cedar Creek Common. She was 84.
She was born Sept. 30, 1918, in Detroit, to Leo and Ida (Boike) Duball. On March 22, 1941, in Detroit, she married William Rieger who preceded her in death in 1986.
Mrs. Rieger spent 20 years as an elementary school teacher in the Jackson area. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling.
She is survived by three children, Bill Rieger of Barton City, Judy Rieger of McKinleyville, Calif., and Toddy (Jim Nugent) Rieger of Suttons Bay; her sister Irene Munzel of Harrison Township; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Carl Lyon

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Dec. 30, at 1 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City for Leelanau County native Carl Lyon who died Dec. 14. He was 91.
He was born in 1911 in Leelanau County to Norinne and Earl Lyon. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Vona (Dumbrille) Lyon.
The oldest of seven children, Mr. Lyon grew up on a farm in Williamsburg. He taught school in Glen Arbor, worked as a gunsmith and retired as a nursing attendant from Traverse City State Hospital. He spent winters in Mesa, Ariz.
Also surviving are his daughter, Yvonne Berger; three sisters, two brothers, five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his youngest brother.

Sylvia M. Lehr of Maple City died Dec. 17 at her home. She was 91.

Alice D. Hottenstein

Funeral services were held last Thursday in Evansville, Ind., for long-time Little Traverse Lake summer resident Alice D. Hottenstein who died Dec. 8 in Evansville. She was 84.
She was born May 26, 1918. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl H. Hottenstein.
Mrs. Hottenstein is survived by two daughters, Jill H. Ball of Traverse City, and Jan H. Wagner of Evansville; and one granddaughter.

Ruth Elaine Gardner

Ruth Elaine Gardner died Dec. 10 in Maple City at the home of her daughter. She was 78.
She was born in Flint on February 23, 1924, to Roy V. and Fern Woodrow Ormond. On Oct. 25, 1946, in Traverse City, she married Paul M. Gardner, who survives.
She served in the WAVES during World War II and was stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego.
Also surviving are her three children, Michael, Thomas (Barb Zupin) and Katie (Dave) Taberski; and her sisters Barbara Ormond and Ann Engebretsen.
At her request, there will be no services and cremation has taken place.

Daisy Faye Dinsmore

A memorial service was held Saturday at Trinity Church for Northport resident Daisy Faye Dinsmore who died Dec. 11 at her home. She was 86.
She was born Nov. 5, 1916, in Northport to Fredrick and Daisy (Nelson) Baumberger, the oldest of 10 children. On June 3, 1938, she married Milo G. Dinsmore who preceded her in death in 1970.
After graduation from Northport High School, she was employed as a telephone operator in Northport and as a nanny in East Jordan. Later, she and her husband farmed and raised poultry and produce which they sold along delivery routes to Northport Point. Following her husband’s death, she was employed in the dietary department of Leelanau Memorial Hospital for 17 years, retiring at the age of 70.
Mrs. Dinsmore was a member of Trinity Church, served as a former secretary for the Northport Farm Bureau and was a volunteer for the Northport Rescue Squad.
She is survived by her two daughters, Suzanne (Edward) Potoczak of Goetzville, and Donna (Albert) Allington of Suttons Bay; five sisters, Mary Firehammer of Niles, Carol (Frank) Hagen) of Celina, Ohio, Trudy (Robert) Lewis of Ann Arbor, Sue (Richard) Hanson of Northport, and Martha (Carlyle) Roberts of Northport; one brother, Noel (Marie) Baumberger of Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Walter; and her sister, Phyllis.
Interment will be in the Leelanau Township cemetery in the spring of 2003. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Faye Dinsmore Memorial Scholarship Fund for culinary arts.
Janet Irene Barth

Funeral services were held Tuesday in Suttons Bay for Omena resident Janet Irene Barth who died Dec. 12 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. She was 67.
She was born in Northport on Jan. 14, 1935, the daughter of Robert Clarence and Effie Mary (Ranger) Barth, who preceded her in death.
Miss Barth worked for many years as a legal secretary. She was an exceptional knitter who made many clothing items which she sold in her shop. She was a member of Trinity Church and Omena Presbyterian Church.
She was the family genealogist for the Ranger and Barth families. She is survived by her good friend Glenn Putnam and many cousins.
Burial was at the Leelanau Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Church in Northport.
Russell W. Sweeney

A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday in Cincinnati for Leland summer resident Russell W. Sweeney who died Nov. 17 in Ohio. He was 89.
He was born in Indianapolis in 1913. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Margaret.
Mr. Sweeney was an Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame member. He graduated from Xavier University in 1936 and played for the original Cincinnati Bengals. He was also an avid golfer. He worked in the retail paint and wall covering business in Ohio.
He is survived by his daughter, Patricia (Thomas) Rohs of Gainesville, Fla., sons Russell Jr. (Bonnie) of Indianapolis, John (Helen) of Columbus, Ohio, and Daniel (Nancy) of Cincinnati; 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
