Hildegarde B. Sogge 8/15/2002
A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church for Suttons Bay resident Hildegarde Bernice Sogge, who died Aug. 15. She was 79.
Mrs. Sogge was born in Cedar on June 8, 1923, the daughter of Richard and Josephine (Delzelski) Walter. On Aug. 10, 1948, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, she married Forrest Harry Sogge, who died Jan. 22, 1997.
Mrs. Sogge was a member of Questors Antique Club, and a serious antique collector. She was also a registered nurse and active with Red Cross blood drives, a member of St. Cecilla’s Catholic Church in Clare, and a member of the Ladies’ Guild and Altar Society. She enjoyed square dancing with her husband.
Surviving are two children, Susan Murawski of Clare and Sarah (James) Kiessel of Suttons Bay; a son-in-law, Frank Murawski of Clare; and four grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and John; and a sister, Josephine.
Memorials may be made in the names of Forrest and Hildegarde Sogge to the Clare Area Scholarship Fund, or to Mass intentions.

Funeral services were held yesterday at Trinity Church for former Northport resident Audrey Carolyn Herban Scott, who died Aug. 17 at Munson Medical Center. She was 90.
Mrs. Scott was born in Frankfort on Feb. 16, 1912, the daughter of Lenore (Brabant) and Mathew Herban. In Frankfort in May, 1939, she married Andrew Scott, who preceded her in death in November, 1997.
Mrs. Scott was a 1929 graduate of Frankfort, attended Wayne State University and Eastern (University) County Normal School, and taught in Thompsonville and Honor. She became a homemaker and active volunteer upon marrying, living from 1947-73 in Saginaw. She returned upon her husband’s retirement to the family homestead in Northport, where she was a member of Trinity Church and the Northport Women’s Club. A talented seamstress, she enjoyed cooking and gardening.
Surviving are her children, Darrell (Doreen) Scott of Lake Ann, Sharon (Ed Richie), and Scott Dupree of Denver; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Burial was in the Leelanau Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Northport Women’s Club, Leelanau Memorial Hospital Auxilary, Almira Township Fire and Rescue or the Benzie County Commission on Aging.
James C. Wick 8/13/2002
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Church in Northport for James C. Wick, who died Aug. 13 at his Suttons Bay home. He was 52.
Mr. Wick was born on Aug. 1, 1950, the son of Frank and Doris (Putnam) Wick of Northport. In Pigeon on Aug. 9, 1975, he married the former Nancy Licht, who survives.
Mr. Wick graduated in 1968 from Northport Schools, and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Central Michigan University, and taught physical education for 28 years primarily at Glenn Loomis Elementary School. He enjoyed sports, especially golf, basketball, softball, wind surfing water skiing, biking and in-line skating, and was a gourmet cook.
Also surviving are a brother, Gordon (Sheila) Wick of Suttons Bay; his sister-in-law, Sandee (Ron) Smoker of Mason; and his brother-in-law, Jim Licht of Middleburg, Va. He was preceded in death by his father in 1986 and his mother in 1991.
Visitation will take place from noon to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Visitation will continue at the church for two hours prior to the service.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Omena. Memorials may be given to Munson Hospice, the Glenn Loomis Elementary Library Fund, the Glenn Loomis Children’s Fund or to a charity of one’s choice.
John R. Thoreson 7/12/2002
A memorial Mass is planned for tomorrow at St. Philip Neri Church in Empire for Port Oneida native John Richard Thoreson, who died July 12 at Port Norlunga, Australia. He was 86.
Mr. Thoreson was born on Dec. 26, 1915, the son of Ole and Louise Thoreson. On May 14, 1945, in Sydney, Australia, he married the former Violet (Val) Emma Hodge, who survives.
Mr. Thoreson was raised on the family farm in Port Oneida, worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp in the Upper Peninsula, and landed a job as a deck hand on a Great Lakes freighter. He earned his merchant seaman certificate in the winter of 1940-41.
He volunteered for the Army before World War II was declared. As a member of the 32nd Army Division, he was stationed in Australia as part of a commando group, in which he rose to the position of technical sergeant.
Establishing households on both continents, the Thoresons returned to Australia in August, 1959, where the couple continued to reside.
Also surviving are children Rosemary, Kathryn, Steven, David, Jeffery and Douglas, all of Australia. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, John; and six younger siblings: Delina in 1977, Sister Karen of Grand Rapids; Rudy (Joanne) of Toledo; Bernice of Atlanta, Ga., Kenneth (Delphine) of Ludington and Leonard (Sally) of Glen Arbor.
A funeral service was held July 16 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Port Norlunga, Australia.
Robert M. Seward 8/11/2002
Two funeral services are planned for Glen Lake resident Robert M. “Bob” Seward, who died Aug. 11. He was 89.
Mr. Seward was born on June 13, 1913. He graduated at the top of his engineering class from Purdue University in 1933, and began engineering at Swift & Co. in Chicago. He designed meat-processing plants, and later with Globe Engineering designed the largest bakery in the world (in Paris) and the world’s largest McDonald’s Restaurant (in Moscow). He continued to be a much-sought engineering consultant well into his 80’s.
He was a bridge life master with more than 1,000 points, and an avid fisherman from the Florida Keys to Manitoba. He was a member and supporter of ShareCare, the Glen Lake Library, the Reformed Church, the Glen Lake Yacht Club, Noon Tiders, Glen Lake Fire & Rescue, Glen Lake Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Crystal River and the Glen Lake Association.
He is survived by six married sons and 14 grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at the College Church in Wheaton, Ill, at 11 a.m. Aug. 24. Family and Chicago friends will host the ceremony. A remembrance of life will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 7 at the Reformed Church, Burdickville.

A memorial service will be held at a later date for Santa Rose, Calif. resident Christine Elizabeth Babcock, who died Aug. 10. She was 52.
She was born in Toledo on Feb. 26, 1950, and was a summer resident of Leland. Survivors include a brother, Dudley S. Babcock; and two sisters, Judith B. McConnell and Louise B. Scott.
David J. Workum 7/6/2002
Funeral services were held Friday at Leland Community United Methodist Church for Leland, Vera Beach, Fla. and Cincinnati resident David J. Workum, who died July 6 in his Leland home. He was 73.
Mr. Workum left behind a legacy of community service in Cincinnati, Vero Beach and Leland. He was recently honored in Vera Beach for contributions to the Indian River Hospital and Council on Aging. He was past commodore of the Leland Yacht Club and a member of the board of directors and treasurer of the Leland Country Club.
Surviving are his wife, Joan; daughters Linda Workum Shad and Debbi Workum, both of Cincinnati, and Elli Workum of Louisville, Ky.; a son, David J. Workum III of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; a brother, Lee J. Workum of Cincinnati; and five grandchildren.

William J. Reynolds 7/3/2002
Graveside services are planned for 10:30 a.m. July 27 at Memorial Gardens in Traverse City for William J. “Bill” Reynolds Jr., who died July 3 at his home in Margate, Fla. He was 55.
Mr. Reynolds retired after 26 years in the Air Force. He met his wife, the former Anne Bugai, while stationed at the Empire Air Force Base. She survives.
Also surviving are a son, Billy (Dina) III; a daughter, Sandra; three brothers, Robert, Wayne and Jon; and two sisters, Becky Reynolds and Elaine Hester.
Cremation has taken place. A luncheon will follow services at the VFW Hall on Veterans Drive in Traverse City.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Alois P. Lawicki 7/10/2002
A funeral Mass was held Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church for Cedar resident Alois “Al” P. Lawicki, who died July 10 at Munson Medical Center. He was 73.
Mr. Lawicki was born in Detroit on Jan. 31, 1929, the son of Aloysius and Eleanore (Majchzak) Lawicki. On May 21, 1952, in Detroit, he married the former Christine C. Kaminski, who survives.
Mr. Lawicki worked in sales in several steel companies in the Detroit area, including Guardia Steel Co. He was a former city councilman for the City of Roseville, and served in the Coast Guard for four years in the 1950’s. The Lawickis owned and operated the Leelanau Rustic Resort, which they bought 33 years ago when they moved to Leelanau County. Mr. Lawicki was transportation director for Glen Lake Schools; and a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Traverse City Elks Lodge and AARP.
Also surviving are his sister, Grace (Arthur) Iwankowski of Mt. Clemens; and a brother, William (Nancy) Lawicki of Macomb Township. He was preceded in death by two sons, James and Karl, who died together 25 years ago in a plane accident.
Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Isadore.
