Lucia Billman 4/25/2002
Lucia Askegaard Billman died April 25. She was 90.
In 1941, she married Keith C. Billman of Cedar, and the couple summered and eventually lived at Glen Lake.
Mrs. Billman was active in the Glen Lake Women’s Club and supported the work of the Friends of the Empire Library and the Friends of the Crystal River.
She lived in cottages on Glen Lake built by her father-in law, Elmer Billman, son of Charles Billman, both well-known area pioneers.
Surviving are two daughters, Dr. Lucia Billman Hammar of Clovis, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Friends of the Crystal River or to the American Friends Service Committee.
Monica Mary Korson 6/19/2002
A Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals was celebrated Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for Suttons Bay resident Monica Mary Korson, who died June 19. She was 78.
Mrs. Korson was born on May 4, 1924, in Foley Minn., the daughter of Harr and Mary (Zylia) Gapinski. She married James Korson, who preceded her in death on May 11, 1992.
Mrs. Korson pitched in working on the family farm during the Great Depression and a long Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. She was 62.
Mrs. Bulliss was born on Aug. 9, 1939, in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Leo and Olive (Oosterhaven) Livingston. On Feb. 4, 1961, in Grand Rapids she married George Bulliss, who survives.
She was a resident of Grand Rapids until 1984, when the Bullisses moved to Glen Arbor. Mrs. Bulliss served three years as Glen Arbor Township treasurer, was treasurer and member of the Glen Arbor Women’s Club, and had been a nursery school teacher in Grand Rapids and Glen Arbor. She was a member and had served as secretary for the Citizens Advisory Board for the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore.
She loved her family and grandchildren.
Also surviving are her children, Katie (Brad) Olsen and George (Lauren) Bulliss, both of Traverse City; her brother, Jim (Jackie) Livingston of Williamsburg, Va.; and two grandchildren.
Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire. Memorials may be directed to the University of Calif., Patricia (Russell) Acker of Saginaw, Stephen (Jeanne) Peplinski of Bradenton, Fla., and Joseph (Esther) Peplinski of Lansing. She was preceded in death by a brother, Leon Peplinski, in 1934.
Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call at Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd., Saginaw, today from 2-9 p.m., and at St. Helen Catholic Church Friday from 10 a.m. until time of Mass. A vigil service will be held at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Servants of Jesus Retirement.
Mary Moir Penoza 6/21/2002
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in First Congregational Church for former Old Mission Peninsula resident Mary Moir Penoza, who died June 21. She was 92.
Mrs. Penoza was born on July 4, 1909, in Motherwell, Scotland, the daughter of John and Maria Irvine. She migrated to Michigan in 1928. In the 1980’s she moved to the Traverse City area with her late husband, Joseph L. Penoza.
Survivors include son and step-son Robert Moir of Maple City and Jack “Bud” Penoza of Kewadin; daughters Cathy Will and Joan Moir of Grand Rapids, 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was also proceeded in death by her son, James; brothers James and John; and her sister, Katherine Hurns.
Memorials may be made to the Peninsula Township Fire Department, 13235 Center Rd. Traverse City, 49684.
Milton ‘Jim’ Vingsness 7/4/2002
A Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals was celebrated Monday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church for Suttons Bay resident Milton “Jim” Vingsness, who died July 4 at Munson Medical Center. He was 75.
Mr. Vingsness was born in Suttons Bay on Feb. 8, 1927, the son of Esten and Elizabeth (Larson) Vingsness. On June 17, 1950 in St. Wenceslaus Church, he married the former Patricia Wilcox, who survives.
Mr. Vingsness graduated from Suttons Bay High School in 1945, receiving his diploma while serving in the Navy in Guam. He worked for 31 years as an iron worker.
He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, where he attained a 4th Degree in the Knights of Columbus, VFW and Sons of Norway.
Also surviving are six children, Rita L. (Danny) Meadows of Story, Wy., Thelma E. (Mark) Herman of Suttons Bay, Edward A. (Jennifer) Vingsness of Livonia, Donna K. (Joseph) Tomlinson of Orient, Wash., Ronald A. (Pamela) Vingsness of Gettysburg, Pa. and Douglas P. Vingsness of South Bend, Ind.; a brother, Harold Vingsness of Suttons Bay; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Robert and Donald.
Internment will be in the Leelanau Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to ShareCare of Leelanau County, Sons of Norway or the St. Michael’s Catholic Church Building Fund.
Raphael C. Gallivan 6/23/2002
A Mass of Christian burial will be held today at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for Solon Township resident Raphael C. “Ray” Gallivan, who died June 23. He was 78.
Mr. Gallivan was born on Oct. 23, 1923, in Solon, the son of Mortimer and Telagia (Rueblewski) Gallivan. In 1943 in Traverse City, married Ella Mae Tanner, who preceded him death in 1993.
Mr. Gallivan, a member of the local trade union, was a cement finisher for area contractors. He enjoyed deer hunting.
Surviving are his two sons, Michael Gallivan of Allendale and Tim (Susan) Gallivan of Traverse City; two daughters, Judy (Ed) Flees of Comstock Park and Joanne (Dave) Passmore of Wayland; one sister Rita Hockstad; and longtime companion Jan Stanislowski.
He is also preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.
Visitation was held last night from 6-8 p.m. at Covell Funeral Home, with a wake service held at 7 p.m. Interment will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Mass intentions.
