Harold Bahlke 7/3/2002
A celebration of life will be held from 2-6 p.m. July 27 at the family cottage, 12931 N. Island View Dr., Christmas Cove, for Northport summer resident Harold Bahlke, who died July 3 in Kalamazoo. He was 86.
Dr. Bahlke was born on Dec. 16, 1915, in Eau Claire, Wis. He served four years as a communications officer in the Army Air Corps, two in India and China.
After receiving a Ph.D. in American Studies at the University of Minnesota, he taught there and at several other universities before joining Western Michigan University. After assisting in the formation of WMU’s College of General Studies, he taught as professor of Humanities until retiring in 1981. He was chairman for seven of those years.
Dr. Bahlke had a passion for working with wood, including building the family cottage.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Marie; three children, Susan (Neil) Kent of Key West, Fla., Sarah (Roger) Jacobs of East Lansing and Stephen of Traverse City; a Swedish “daughter”, Dr. Hillevi Lundblad; a sister, Harriet Dryburgh of Farmington Hills; five grandchildren; and two great granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his brother, Howard; and a grandson.
Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Leelanau Conservancy.

Services will be held at a later date for Elmwood Township resident Kathryn (Kay) Rockwell, who died June 15 at Munson Medical Center.
Jack R. Conklin 5/13/2002
Jack R. Conklin, 86, a long-time resident of Traverse City, passed away May 13, 2002 at Munson Medical Center.
Born November 5, 1915, in Grand Rapids to Stanley and Josephine Wasielewski, he was adopted at the age of two by Evaline and Nall Conklin in Honor. He graduated from Empire High School.
At the age of 19, he joined the U. S. Coast Guard and served in World War II aboard the U.S.S. Leonard Wood. He served in the Coast Guard for 12 years. After leaving the Coast Guard, he worked for the Traverse City Water Department for 27 years, retiring in 1981.
On April 6, 1946, he married Beryl Adolphson in Manistee. She preceded him in death on January , 1956. He was also preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
Jack is survived by his two daughters, Leigh Taylor and Sue (Neil) Livasy, both of Traverse City; four grandchildren, Peter Taylor of San Francisco, Michelle (Mark) Stevenson, Derek Beyer, and Nicholas Livasy; and three great- grandchildren, Stuart, Delaney, and Jack Stevenson, all of Traverse City. He is also survived by two sister, Wanda Yanen of West Virginia and Freda Bihari of Ohio, both with whom he was reunited with in 1990.
Jack was a member of Eagle Aerie 383, VFW Post 2780, and the American Military League.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 16 from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, May 17 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with The Rev. Fr. William Lipscomb of St. Francis Catholic Church officiating. Burial will take place immediately following with military honors being provided by Cherryland VFW Post 2780.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society or The Hospice House of Traverse City.
Jack R. Conklin 5/13/2002
Funeral services were held Friday for Traverse City resident Jack R. Conklin, who died May 13 at Munson Medical Center. He was 86.
Mr. Conklin was born in Grand Rapids on Nov. 5, 1915, the son of Stanley and Josephine Wasielewski. On April 6, 1946, in Manistee, he married Beryl Adolphson, who preceded him in death in January, 1956.

William Hancock 4/15/2002
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 22, for William V. Hancock at Leland Community United Methodist Church.
Mr. Hancock died on April 15; he was 72.
Memorials may be made to the Leelanau Conservancy.
Richard Clark Taylor 5/30/2002
Funeral services were held Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau for Omena resident Richard Clark Taylor, who died May 30 at his home on Ingalls Bay.
Mr. Taylor was born on May 18, 1926, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Hazel (Clark) Taylor and Edward Harrison Taylor, Ph.D. He received a bachelor’s degree from Haverford College in 1949 after serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked for Swiss & Company as a labor relations manager in Peabody, Mass., New Jersey, Chicago and Omaha. In his retirement, he and his wife, Marie, built their home.
Mr. Taylor enjoyed fishing, was a talented carpenter, and had a fine tenor voice.
Also surviving are his sons, Philip C. Taylor, M.D., of Wayne, Pa., David and John Call of Florida, Richard Call of Germany, and Neil and Donald Call of Massachusetts; his daughters, Linda (Clark Taylor) Kettenring of Concord, N.H., Marie Nelson and Cynthia Gilchrist of Massachusetts and Donna Ronayne of Manasqwuan, N.J.; a sister, Patricia A. Kulick of Ocean Springs, Miss.; 22 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Omena Hillcrest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Munson Healthcare Foundation—Oncology Unit, 1105 6th St., Traverse City 49684.
Ralph George Biocchi 6/8/2002
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Faith Reformed Church in Traverse City for Ralph George Biocchi, who died June 8 at his Suttons Bay home. He was 75.
Mr. Biocchi was born in Detroit on July 26, 1926, the son of Joseph and Anna (Vanadia) Biocchi. In 1947 in Flint, he married Jennifer Austin, who survives.
Mrs. Biocchi served in the Navy during World War II.
Also surviving are four children, Kim Biocchi, Tracy (Mike) Mixon, James Biocchi and Kerry (Anita) Biocchi; and six grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the Inland Sea Education Association.
Cindy Langschwager 6/1/2002
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Suttons Bay for Waynesville, N.C., resident Cindy Kay Langschwager, who died June 1. She was 45.
She was born Jan. 9, 1957, in Saginaw, the daughter of John H. and Geraldine E. (Schultz) Langschwager.
She was a graduate of Douglas McArthur High School in Saginaw, and attended Ferris State University and Haywood Community College where she received her phlebotomy certificate.
She loved writing poetry, gardening and her cats. Cindy also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, traveling, and listening to classical music.
Surviving are her parents, of Suttons Bay; her son, Robert Dana Higgins III; and sisters Christine Langschwager of Traverse City and Carla (Larry) Linvill of Traverse City.
She was proceeded in death by her grandparents.
Memorials may be made to the Woman’s Cancer Fund, or to Mass intentions.

Private family services will be held at a later date for Theodora Maria Zatt, who June 4 at her Suttons Bay home. She was 90.
