Rev. Fretheim 3/21/2002
A graveside burial service to commemorate the life of Rev. Phillip A. Fretheim will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Leelanau Township Cemetery.
A luncheon will follow at Bethany Lutheran Church in Northport.
Rev. Fretheim died March 21 at Munson Medical Center.
Eleanor ‘Ellie’ Morgan 5/18/2002
A memorial service will be held next Wednesday, May 29, at Suttons Bay Congregational Church for Traverse City resident Eleanor Elizabeth “Ellie” Morgan, who died May 18 at Orchard Creek Assisted Living. She was 71.
She was born on Sept. 29, 1930, in Cleveland, the daughter of Lloyd Kenneth and Margaret (Egyhazi) Morgan. She retired after 30 years of employment with Northern Telecom in Chicago, and was a member of Glenview Community Church in Glenview.
Surviving are a sister, Brenda (Roger) Ehle; and two nephews, Craig Ehle and Curt (Patti) Ehle.
Memorials may be directed to the Suttons Bay Congregational Church Music Department, or Munson Hospice & Palliative Care.
Marion Vanderneut 5/15/2002
Memorial hours will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, at her son’s home for Stow, Ohio, to Maple City from 1976-1984. She resided in Portage County for 18 years prior to moving to Stow Glen Retirement Village.
Mrs. Vanderneut was a member of Kent (Ohio, the daughter of James W. and Grace (Turner) Rice. On Jan. 29, 1949, she married Franklin W. Rowland, who survives.
Mrs. Rowland was a clerk in the clothing industry. She enjoyed volunteering, especially for Munson Medical Center, the Leelanau Conservancy and in Leland Elementary School Library. She enjoyed needlework and playing bridge, and will be remembered for making Christmas and other holidays special for her family.
Also surviving are her daughters, Katherine (Gary) Twomey of Bloomfield Village and Sally Holman of Traverse City; a son, Franklin (Mary Beth) Rowland Jr. of Bloomfield Village; a brother, Jim Rice Jr. of Seattle; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Bob Rice; and sister, Hannah Jane Waterman.
Cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Memorials may be directed to the Leelanau Conservancy or ShareCare.
Josephine E. Spey 5/1/2002
A memorial service was held Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church for Glen Arbor summer resident Josephine (Jo) Elizabeth Spey, who died May 1.
Mrs. Spey was born in Detroit. She was a secretary for Gar Wood, famous industrialist and speed boat racer, and retired as administrative assistant to the president of Dura Corporation. She maintained homes in the Detroit area and the Arbor Pines section of Glen Arbor.
Survivors include her best friend and caregiver, Diana Sheridan.
Memorials may be made to the Glen Arbor Artist Association, P.O. Box 305, Glen Arbor 49363; or the Bethlehem Lutheran Youth Group, c/o Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Glen Arbor.
Esther Blanche Putnam 5/3/2002
Funeral services were held yesterday for Suttons Bay resident Esther Blanche Putnam, who died May 3 at Munson Medical Center. She was 77.
Mrs. Putnam was born on March 12, 1925, in Traverse City, the daughter of Frank and Blanche (Morris) Skelly. On Oct. 15, 1943, at First Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay, she married Rennie L. Putnam.
Mrs. Putnam was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church of Suttons Bay. She enjoyed walking, doing cross stitching and reading. She loved visiting with friends and neighbors, and was herself a gracious hostess.
Surviving are her children, Frederick R. (Leah) Putnam of Redford Township, Mildred (Jed) Connell of Tooele, Utah and Doris (Robert) Gilbert of Traverse City; her sister, Vida (Ed) Kehl of Northport; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Fugate; brothers Robert and Donald Skelly; and her sister, Virginia Peterson.
Interment was in Hillcrest Cemetery in Omena.
Esther Sara Flaska 5/17/2002
A funeral service was held yesterday for Maple City resident Esther Sara Flaska, who died May 17. She was 94.
Mrs. Flaska was born on Sept. 6, 1907, in Cedar, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Brzezinski) Bloswick. In Salt Lake City, Utah, she married Rudolph Flaska, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Flaska farmed her own cherry orchards for 30 years, having started in farming at the age of 14 delivering cucumbers in the family Model T to Cedar Railroad. She enjoyed riding motorcycles with her late husband, car and horse racing and watching Lawrence Welk. She was an avid canner, and enjoyed gathering with her sisters over a game of scrabble or cards.
Surviving include sisters Clara Bumgardner of Maple City and Helen Elmer of Six Lakes. She was also preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery in Muskegon. Memorials may be made to ALS‚ Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Dorothy Nora Mork 4/27/2002
A celebration of life was held Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church for lifelong Suttons Bay resident Dorothy Nora Mork, who died April 27 in Northport. She was 95.
Mrs. Mork was born on Oct. 16, 1906, the daughter of Anton and Marit (Johnson) Solem. On June 16, 1926, she married Harold Mork, who preceded her in death in 1968.
Mrs. Mork was the last survivor of 14 siblings. She enjoyed gardening, painting, reading and sewing, for which she was known for beautiful quilts which have been displayed at the Leelanau County Museum, Traverse City Opera House and University of Michigan Museum. Her “Bible Quilt” is displayed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she was a long-time member, taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir.
Mrs. Mork volunteered at Penny Power Thrift Shop, enjoyed doll restoration, and sewed clothes for dolls distributed through social services. She was a member of Suttons Bay Friendship Center where she played in the kitchen band.
Surviving are her children Otto (Betty) Mork of Suttons Bay, Charlotte (Charles) Guisgand of Garden City, Darwin Mork of Waterford, Jerry (Betty) of Northport, and Thea (Ray) Kellogg of Northport; 20 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; and three great, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two great grandchildren.
Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the church, Friendship Center or Leelanau Memorial Health Care.
William ‘Bill’ Terry 4/25/2002
Funeral services were held yesterday at Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Traverse City for Cedar resident William James “Bill” Terry, who died April 25. He was 46.
Mr. Terry was the son of William “Bill” and Margaret (Pohl) Terry of Traverse City. On May 13, 2000, he married Janet Thompson, who survives.
Mr. Terry graduated from Suttons Bay High School in 1974, and with honors in 1978 from the Annapolis Naval Academy. He was an officer aboard the USS Mullinnix and USS Wadsworth, retiring as a lieutenant. He spent leave time on church projects across the United States and throughout the world.
Religious offices included current secretary of Faith Missionary Baptist Church and past deacon at Cherryland Baptist Church. He was secretary of the Leelanau County Republican executive committee, and a driving force behind the Empire Food Pantry. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, and was a devoted family man.
Also surviving are his parents; an infant son, Jacob Terry; a stepdaughter, Morgan Thompson; two brothers, Michael (Melia) Terry of Battle Creek and Patrick Terry of Beulah; and three sisters, Shellie (Dennis) Hicks of Lonore, Tenn., Leslie Spencer of Cedar and Terry (Dave) Matteson of Acme.
Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery in Leland. Memorials my be made to Faith Missionary Baptist Church, 927 Webster St., Traverse City 49684; or the Salvation Army.
