Gaylord Dwight Howell

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at Keswick United Methodist Church for Bingham Township resident Rev. Gaylord Dwight Howell, who died Aug. 8 at Munson Medical Center. He was 79.
Rev. Howell was born on June 7, 1920, in Brazil, Ind., the son of Arthur and Bertha Mae (Northway) Howell. In 1986 in Keswick he married Luella Shugart, who survives.
Rev. Howell, a member of the West Michigan Conference of United Methodist Churches, served in Charlevoix, Green Sky Hill, Grandville, Fremont, Battle Creek, Urbandale, Parchment and Barrien Springs. He graduated from DePauw University and received a master of divinity degree from Garrett Seminary. He was a 40-year member of Kiwanis International, for which he served as lieutenant governor. He also enjoyed growing irises during retirement.
Also surviving are three children, Robert (Rose) Howell of Grant, James Howell of Newaygo and Barbara (Gary) Trama of Plainwell; two stepchildren, Brad (Molly) Shugart and Rena (John) Fraser, both of Traverse City; seven brothers, Hillary of Oregon, Robert, Aubrey, J. Stanley, Morris and Forrest, all of Indiana, and John of Alabama; three grandchildren; and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Long Howell.
Friends may have called yesterday evening from 5-9 at Martinson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Floral Lawn Cemetery, Battle Creek. Memorials may be directed to Keswick United Methodist Church.
Rev. Earl Kline Lund

Funeral services were held Friday for Good Harbor resident Rev. Earl Kline Lund, who died Aug. 3 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. He was 100.
Mr. Lund was born on Feb. 19, 1899, in Anoka, Minn., the son of Charles and Cora Lund. In 1933 he married Orpha Margretta Downs Morse, who preceded him in death in 1965.
Mr. Lund was a minister in the United Brethren of Christ Church since 1940. He also owned and operated Lund's Scenic Garden in Maple City.
Surviving are two step-children, Kathryn Thornberry of Maple City and Alice M. Hensley of Lubbock, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Bessie M. Morse of Sylvania, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and 15 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Virginia Haney, and two stepsons, Norman A. Morse and Leroy E. Morse.
Burial was in Cleveland Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Maple City Community Church.
Earl Vance Burk

Funeral services were held yesterday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Home for Earl Vance Burk of Little Traverse Lake, who died Sept. 11. He was 81.
Mr. Burk was born in Saginaw on Aug. 21, 1918, the son of Rev. Emory W. and Ellen (Fuller) Burk. On Nov. 21, 1940, he married Marjorie M. Green, who survives.
Mr. Burk was a retired agent for Farmers Insurance Group. He was a former member of Flint First Church of the Nazarene and attended Traverse City First Church of the Nazarene.
Other survivors include a son, James E. (Natalie) Burk of Rochester Hills; a brother, Meri A. (Jean) Burk of Vicksburg and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Emory; and three sisters, Mildred Pollman, Majorie Daniels and Jane Russell; and an infant sister.
Memorials may be directed to Munson Hospice or First Church of the Nazarene in Traverse City.
Karen Marie Petoskey-Nichols

A funeral Mass was held Saturday at Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church in Peshawbestown for Wyoming resident Karen Marie Petoskey-Nichols, who died Tuesday in Grand Rapids. She was 30.
She was born on May 14, 1969, in Port Huron, the daughter of Nate McCants and Louise (Chippewa) Petoskey. She was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who spent most of her time raising her son and enjoying time with her family.
Surviving are her son, Mitchell; her mother, Louise of Suttons Bay; brothers and sisters Wyman Chippewa, Joyce Petoskey, Glen Petoskey, Greg Petoskey, Brenda Whiteye, Eliza Burns-all of Suttons Bay, Leona May of Alabama, Janice Petoskey of Detroit, Gary Chippewa of Port Huron, Rudy Rosales of Port Huron, Glenda, William and Diane Petoskey-all of Oakland, Calif., and Joan Petoskey of San Bernadino, Calif.; three stepbrothers, John and Robert Petoskey of Suttons Bay and Terry Petoskey of Grand Rapids and one stepsister, Donna Swallows of Suttons Bay.
She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Steven Petoskey.
Burial was in Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Twyla Shomin-Michelle Priest Fund.
Lorraine M. Stallman

A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church for Suttons Bay resident Lorraine M. Stallman, who died Sept. 8 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. She was 78.
Born on July 13, 1921, she was the daughter of William and Lorraine (Belanger) Stallman. She worked most of her life as a nanny in New York, and liked to travel and enjoyed weaving.
Surviving are three sisters, Virginia (Don) Runde, Alice DeBord and Marie Spezia; and four brothers, George Stallman, William (Ruby) Stallman, Jerry (Vesta) Stallman and Eugene (Margaret) Stallman.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Leo.
Burial was in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to Leelanau Memorial Care Center.
Doraldeane J. Barratt

A private family gathering is planned for Glen Arbor resident Doraldeane J. Barratt, who died Sept. 2 at Munson Medical Center. She was 77.
Mrs. Barratt was born in Blissfield on Jan. 21, 1922, the daughter of Oscar and Lucy (Davis) Seeburger. On Dec. 28, 1956, in Goshen, Ind., she married Willard J. Barratt, who survives.
Mrs. Barratt graduated from Blissfield High School in 1939 and was a resident of the Glen Arbor area for the past 44 years. She was an excellent softball player and bowler who enjoyed crossword puzzles. A former member of the Glen Arbor Women's Club, she also served on the Glen Arbor Township Election Board for many years.
She was employed at Crystal Harbor Marina on Glen Lake, and for 30 years along with her husband was involved in the building business.
Also surviving are two stepsons, Thomas W. (Susan) Barratt of Metamora and Michael L. (Anita) Barratt of Bloomfield Hills; a stepdaughter, Sharon L. (Lowell) White of Edition, Ga.; and seven stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alberta Peter; and a brother, Joe Seeburger.

Berrien F. Thorn

A memorial service was held Tuesday at Marina Park for Suttons Bay resident Berrien F. Thorn, who died Aug. 26 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. He was 50.
He was born in New Rochelle, N.Y. as Berrien Thorn Fragos on Nov. 16, 1948, the son of George and Carol June (Thorn) Fragos.
Mr. Thorn earned a degree in fine art at the New York Phoenix School of Design in 1972. He continued to study different fields throughout his life, including painting, storytelling and ukulele, and was an accomplished musician who opened for Pete Seeger and Utah Phillips.
He lived for the past 12 years in first Traverse City and then Suttons Bay, writing a column called "Easy Street" for the Traverse City Record-Eagle. A novel, The Wooing of the North," was in progress at the time of his death.
Surviving are his father and a brother, Russell Fragos, both of Armonk, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his mother.
Cremation has taken place. Frank G. Strehl Sr.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today for Northport resident Frank Gerard Strehl Sr., who died Aug. 30 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. He was 78.
Mr. Strehl was born in Detroit on July 13, 1921, the son of Michael and Matilda (Ellert) Strehl. In 1941 in Toledo, Ohio, he married Geraldine F. Hale, who died Feb. 11, 1994.
Mr. Strehl, a carpenter, was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church in Gills Pier. He served in the Army during World War II.
Surviving are a son, Frank (Stephanie) Strehl Jr. of Northport, a daughter, Charlotte (Michael) Monaghan of Harper Woods; a sister, Betty McGill of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Burial will be at Beechwood Cemetery. Special services were scheduled for last night from 5-9 p.m., with a Rosary scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be given to Leelanau Memorial Health Center.
