Walter J. Kalchik 11/24/2001
A memorial service will be held at 1 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Church in Northport for Walter Joseph Kalchik, who died Nov. 24 at his Suttons Bay home. He was 66.
Mr. Kalchik was born in Suttons Bay on May 18, 1935, the son of Louis L. and Helen (Nemeskal) Kalchik. In 1960 in Traverse City, he married Donna Weimer, who survives.
Mr. Kalchik was president of Kalchik’s Disposal Service in Suttons Bay. He served in West Germany in the Army. He was a member of the Leelanau Township Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and was treasurer in the Northport Sportsman’s Club. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.
Also surviving are three children, Rebecca (Terry) Warner, Guy Kalchik and David Kalckik; four sisters, Delores (Raymond) Riggle, Jean Kalchik, Cynthia (Richard) Gilliand and Georgia (Jon) Allen; three brothers, Victor (Shirley) Kalchik, Francis (Carol) Kalchik and Albion (Dianne) Kalchik; and two grandsons.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Omena. Memorials may be made to the Leelanau Volunteer Fire Department or the Northport Sportsman’s Club.
Vernon Bardenhagen 11/20/2001
A celebration of life was held Saturday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for Vernon James Bardenhagen, who died Nov. 20 at his East Leland home. He was 79.
Mr. Bardenhagen was born on Nov. 3, 1922, on the Suttons Bay farm of Elmer and Emma (Wakulat) Bardenhagen. On May 26, 1943, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland, he marred Ruth Lorraine Scheck, who survives.
Mr. Bardenhagen was a lifelong farmer who grew potatoes, cherries, strawberries, cauliflower and broccoli. He spent many hours working on the farm where he taught his children the meaning of work, and hauled his produce and crops of his neighbors to various markets and local processors including retail stores in Leelanau County, Traverse City and Grand Rapids. In recent years, he delivered chemicals for Wilbur Ellis.
Mr. Bardenhagen was considered a great euchre player and also enjoyed cribbage, bridge, bowling and in his later years golf. He and Ruth wintered for 25 years in Florida, and enjoyed time at their family’s Upper Peninsula cabin. He was a former Leland School Board member; belonged to the Farm Bureau and several cherry industry committees; and served as usher, elder, and on various committees with the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church.
Also surviving are his children, James V. (Janeen Meyers) Bardenhagen, Gary A. (Christi Bremer) Bardenhagen, Robert E. (Bonnie Severence) Bardenhagen, John A. Bardenhagen, Peter A. (Karen Moe) Bardenhagen and Judith A. (Bill) Livingston; a brother, Victor Bardenhagen of Varnsville, S.C.; a sister, Jane Schwarz of Leland; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Bardenhagen; a sister, Lucille (Petersen) Bach; and a daughter, Susan Jane Bardenhagen.
Burial was in East Leland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, or to Munson Hospice.
Raymond J. Richard 11/8/2001
A funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 12 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for Lake Leelanau resident Raymond Joseph Richard, who died Nov. 8. He was 76.
Mr. Richard was born in Lake Leelanau on March 20, 1925, the oldest son of Edmond and Clara (Eckerle) Richard. In Ann Arbor in June of 1946, he married Charlotte Lyons, who preceded him in death in November, 1970. In 1973, he married Phyllis Denoyer of Lake Leelanau, who survives.
Mr. Richard was a founding forefather of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Ann Arbor, a member of Alcoholics Anonymous in Lake Leelanau and a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he attained the status of Fourth Degree Knight. For many years he was a member of the Painter and Decorators Association.
Mr. Richard was also a member of St. Marys Catholic Church, where he was a financial scholarship contributor to the church and school.
Also surviving are his children and step-children, Carol (Nicholas) Chaconas, Sally (John) Nimitz, Edmond Richard, Judy (Pat) Yoder, Jan (James) Reinke and David (Barbara) Denoyer; brothers Louis Richard, Leo Richard and Philip Richard; sisters Olivia Grant, Mary Kerr, Caroline Murrel, Dorothy Peer and Esther Hannah; three grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Geneve Poppenger.
A graveside service was also held Tuesday at Bethlehem Cemetery in Ann Arbor. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Traverse City (Individualized Hospice), 3003 Washtenaw, Ann Arbor, MI 48104; or to the Richard Family Scholarship Fund.
Berniece G. Davis 11/3/2001
A Mass of Christian burial was held Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church for Berniece G. Davis, who died Nov. 3 at her Traverse City home. She was 74.
Mrs. Davis was born in Traverse City on Nov. 25, 1926, the daughter of Leonard and Mae (Brooder) McGarry. On May 3, 1947 in Traverse City, she married Clifford Davis, who survives.
Mrs. Davis lived in Empire until moving to Traverse City in 1980. She was employed with Burwood Industries and JC Penney, and enjoyed golfing and bowling. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and a former member of the Eagles Club in Interlochen.
Also surviving are two daughters, Rita Davis of Traverse City and Debra Ann (Jim) Dice of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; three sons, Steve (Mary) Davis of Suttons Bay, Daniel (Susan) Davis of Empire and Randus Davis of Traverse City; a sister, Irene Davis of Traverse City; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sisters ida Mae Gauthier and Mildred McGarry.
Interment will be in St. Philip Neri Catholic Cemetery in the spring. Memorials may be directed to Munson Hospice or Immaculate Conception Church.
Alice M. Flees 10/30/2001
A Mass of Christian burial was held Friday at St. Rita-St. Joseph Catholic Church for Maple City resident Alice M. Flees, who died Oct. 30 at Maple Valley Nursing Home. She was 89.
Mrs. Flees was born in East Jordan on Jan. 28, 1912, the daughter of Joseph and Annabelle (Svoboda) Nachazel. On Oct. 13, 1945 at St. Rita’s Catholic Church, she married Martin E. Flees, who survives.
Mrs. Flees was a member of St. Rita’s Church and St. Rita’s Rosary and Altar Society. For many years she was church organist at St. Rita’s. She was postal clerk at the Maple City post office for 19 years. She was devoted to her family, church and religion.
Also surviving are a daughter, Arlene Ogden of Saginaw; a son, Gary Flees of Traverse City; a sister, Winifred Jankowski of Traverse City; sisters-in-law Agnes Fleese of Detroit and Orpha (Nachazel) Deering of Empire; three grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
Preceding her in death were a brother, Richard Nachazel; and a grandson.
Burial was in St. Rita’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Rita’s Church or Maple Valley Nursing Home.
William Henry Nedow 10/23/2001
A Mass of Christian burial was conducted Oct. 27 At St. Marys Church for Leland resident William Henry Nedow Jr., who died Oct. 23 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. He was 78.
Mr. Nedow was born in Leland on June 1, 1923, the son of William Henry and Marguerite (Mason) Nedow Sr. On Oct. 25, 1947, at St. Marys Church, he married Mary Paupore, who survives.
Mr. Nedow served in the Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the Leland International Coffee Club and Leland Volunteer Fire Department.
Also surviving are six children, Sandra (Willard) Belanger, Richard (Robin) Nedow, Janice (Roger) Justus, Russ (Sherry) Nedow, Steve Nedow and Joel (Julie Austin) Nedow; a sister, Marguerite Killian; 19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lester; and a sister, Esther Kenney.
Interment was at St. Marys Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Leelanau Memorial Health Center, Mass intentions or the Leland Volunteer Fire Department.
Doris M. Knapp 10/24/2001
Funeral services were held Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Northport for Maple City resident Doris M. Knapp, who died Oct. 24 at Munson Medical Center. She was 71.
Mrs. Knapp was born in Jenners, Pa., on April 25, 1930, the daughter of Andrew and Lucille (Pritz) Melleky. On April 8, 1991 in Las Vegas, she married Robert C. Knapp, who survives.
Mrs. Knapp, a teacher and entrepreneur, graduated from the University of Michigan. She taught in Highland Park early in her career.
Mrs. Knapp loved skiing, boating and traveling across the country in her motor home; she had a gift for making friends everywhere she traveled. She raised five children and loved spending time with her family and friends.
Also surviving are her children, Carlotta Schroeder, Hank Schroeder, Marty Schroeder, Marcia Schroeder, Sharon (Jeffrey) (Schroeder) Frank, Paul Knapp, Bill Knapp, James Knapp and Pat Knapp; a sister, Betty Shubik; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Sheftic.

Cella Christine Kalchik 10/27/2001
A Mass of Christian burial was held yesterday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church for Celia Christine Kalchik, who died Oct. 27 at Bortz Health Care. He was 93.
Mrs. Kalchik was born in Gills Pier on May 6, 1908, the daughter of Bernard and Anna (Hulla) Houdek. On April 17, 1928, in Gills Pier, she married Roy Albion Kalchik, who preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 1990.
Mrs. Kalchik was the oldest surviving lifelong member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. She loved her vegetable garden and canning home-grown produce. She also enjoyed quilting and needlework.
Surviving are seven children, James (Virginia) Kalchik, Gertrude Vingsness, Betty (Otto) Mork, Elmer (Millie) Kalchik, Bernice (Albert) Herman, Pat (Clarence) Popp and Tom (Jane) Kalchik; a brother, Victor (Agnes) Houdek; 33 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were a son-in-law, Donald Vingsness; a brother, Charles; a sister, Emma Sedlacek; and a twin sister, Anna Korson.
Burial was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Mass intentions or the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery Fund.
Louis G. Brenner 10/27/2001
Funeral services were held Friday at Holy Cross Church in Saginaw for Louis G. Brenner, who died Oct. 27 at Maple Valley Nursing home. He was 88.
Mr. Brenner was born in Saginaw on April 22, 1913. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in February 2001.
Surviving are two daughters, Judith A. Bugai of Cedar and Kathleen L. Williams of Fenton; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Brenner had been a resident at the nursing home since March.
