Olga Turak 10/19/2001

Funeral services will be held today at Kolodiy-Lazuta funeral home in Parma, Ohio, for Glen Arbor resident Olga Turak, who died October 19. She was 90.

Mrs. Turak was born Dec. 27, 1910 in Ternopol, Ukraine, the daughter of Yakiv and Olena Hristena. On May 30, 1930, she married Anthony Turak, who preceded her in death in 1973.

At the age of 2, Mrs. Turak accompanied her mother to the United States through Ellis Island to join her father, who was working as a coal miner Pennsylvania. After graduating from the Scranton Lackawanna Business College, she worked at the East Ohio Gas

Company in Cleveland. Mr. Turak received a patent for his invention of the soda dispenser, the same type used in restaurants today. The Turaks manufactured the dispensers at their Cleveland-based business for several years. In 1984, Olga moved to Glen Arbor, where she worked at The Yarn Shop.

Surviving are sisters Lily (Steve) Smarsh of Chicago and Ann Chomko of Thornhurst, Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Mary turak of Glen Arbor; two grandchildren including Elizabeth (Peter) Edwards of Glen Arbor; and six great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death in 1993 by her son, Theodore in 1993.
A celebration of her life will be held Nov. 25 from 4-6 p.m. in the Glen Arbor Town Hall.

Esther E. Shiley 10/20/2001

Funeral services were held Monday at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church for Northport resident Esther Elizabeth Shiley, who died Oct. 20 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. She was 77.

Mrs. Shiley was born on July 4, 1924, in Altoona, Pa., the daughter of James and Nellie (Cunningham) Kauffman. On Sept. 4, 1945, in Kalamazoo, she married James A. Shiley, who survives. Mrs. Shiley was a registered nurse. She was active in the Ladies Volunteer Group at Leelanau Memorial Health Center, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and St. Lukes Episcopal Church. She worked at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for more than 17 years.

Also surviving are four children, Patricia Shiley of Kalamazoo, Richard Shiley of Washington, Linda McPall of Okemos and James Shiley Jr. of Kalamazoo; one sister, Jennie Mae Rodgers of Florida, seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Glen and Raymond.

Burial was in Leelanau Township Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Leelanau Memorial Health Center or St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church.

Ruth A. Gardner 10/7/2001

Memorial services were held Oct. 10 for Glendale, Ohio and 25-year Glen Lake summer resident Ruth A. Gardner, who died Oct. 7. She was 90.

Mrs. Gardner was born in Cincinnati, on Sept. 16, 1911. She was a volunteer for the Glen Arbor Chamber of Commerce, the Empire Museum and the Glen Lake Library.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Thomas C. Gardner, in 1985. Surviving are two sons, Thomas D. Gardner of Beverly, W. Va., and Timothy A. Gardner of Sannibel Island, Fla.

Private intermenty was held at Spring Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Altar Guild of the Glendale Presbyterian Church, 40 E. Fountain St., Glendale Ohio 45246, or the Glen Lake Association Preservation Fund, P.O. Box 245, Glen Arbor 49636.

Elizabeth Leachman 10/12/2001

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday at St. Francis Catholic Church for Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Leachman, who died Oct. 12 at her Bingham Township residence. She was 61.

Mrs. Leachman was born on July 8, 1940, in Highland Park, the daughter of Alvin J. and Theodosia (Ososki) Nelson. On Sept. 8, 1962, at St. Benedict Church in Highland Park, she married Charles O. Leachman, who survives.

Mrs. Leachman was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Parish, and taught at many parishes in the area. She and her husband have owned and operated West Wind Resort on Lake Leelanau for 26 years. She was local coordinator of Bereaved Parents, and very involved in the local community and schools while reaching out to neighbors. More important than anything was her dedication to her family.

Also surviving are her children, Denise A. (Michael) Krueger of Traverse City, Michelle M. (Jeffrey) Grant of Suttons Bay, Charles W. (Jeanine) Leachman of Traverse City and Michael P. Leachman of Detroit; brothers Marlon Eavou of Traverse City, Robert Nelson of Canton, Ohio, Edward Nelson of Saint Clair Shores, and Michael (Pat) Currie and Richard (Jane) Nelson, both of Macomb County; sisters Margaret (John) Chioini of Birmingham, Va.; (Roland) Keim of Brimley and Barbara (Jerry) Sutter of Grand Rapids; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a step-mother, Anna Nelson; a son, John; brothers John and Frank; and a sister, Betty.

Burial was in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Suttons Bay. Memorials may be given to Grand Traverse Area Right to Life, Munson Hospice or the Christian Home Foundation for Children and the Aged.

Maria Rose Gonda 10/12/2001

A funeral Mass will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church for Maria Rose Gonda, who died Oct. 12 at her home in Elmwood Township. She was nine months old.
Maria was born on Dec. 25, 2000, the daughter of Michael Anthony Still and Jacqueline Ann Gonda, who both survive.
Also surviving are her brother, Shane; and grandparents Gerald (Beverly) Gonda and Robert (Mildred) Still. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Robert Coleman.
Visitation was held last night from 7-9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Martinson Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the Right to Life organization.

Joseph R. Campbell 10/10/2001

Funeral services were held Monday for Downers Grove, Ill., and lifelong Leland summer resident Joseph R. Campbell, who died Oct. 10. He was 84.
Mr. Campbell graduated from Purdue University. He retired in 1981 as a mechanical engineer for Electro-Motive Division of General Motors after 43 years. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
Surviving are his wife, Adele M. Campbell; a son, Walter (Kathy) Campbell of Woodrodge, Ill; a daughter, Nancy Campbell of Downers Grove; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Interment was in Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook, Ill. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 999 North Main St., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137.

Gertrude C. Schlueter 10/7/2001

A funeral Mass was held yesterday at St. Marys Church for lifelong Lake Leelanau resident Gertrude Cecilia Schlueter, who died Oct. 7 at Munson Medical Center. She was 80.

Mrs. Schlueter was born in Boyne City on Nov. 18, 1920, the daughter of John and Mary (Kurth) Stallman. On Nov. 18, 1940, in Suttons Bay, she married Harvey “Herb” Schlueter, who preceded her in death in 1990.
Mrs. Schlueter was a member of St. Marys Church, and was a volunteer for social services. She was an artistic baker who made wedding cakes through her own bakery, and a decorator at Burwood Products.

Surviving are two sons, David Schlueter of Traverse City and Stephen Schlueter of Suttons Bay; two daughters, Linda Flynn of El Paso, Texas, and Sandra Schlueter of Provo, Utah; sisters Hilda Gauthier of Lake Leelanau, Margaret Priest of Tennessee, Elizabeth Houdek of Gills Pier, Mary Vollink of Chicago and Cecilia Stenberg of Wisconsin; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by brothers Henry Stallman and Joseph Stallman; a sister, Kathy Roubal; and a grandson.
Burial was in St. Marys Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Marys School.

Clemence A. Mikowski 10/8/2001

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church for Cedar resident Clemence Ambrose Mikowski, who died Oct. 8 at Bortz Nursing Center. He was 86.

Mr. Mikowski was born in Cedar on Aug. 14, 1915, the son of Wilhelm Pelagin (Cerkowski) Mikowski. On June 5, 1943, in Immaculate Conception Church in Traverse City, he married Agnes Marie Winowiecki, who survives.
Mr. Mikowski worked for Grand Traverse Overhall Supply Co. and Holy Rosary School. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church.

Also surviving are four children, Christine Ann Schlueter, Bernadette Marie Mikowski, Clement William Mikowski and Dennis Joseph Mikowski; a brother, Edwin Mikowski; two sisters, Sister Marie Eugenia and Bernice Winowiecki; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Anthony and Peter; six brothers, Anselm, Stephen, Frank, Leonard, Januarius and William; four sisters, Mary, Pelagin, Sister Mary Juliet and Loretta; and one grandson.

Visitation was held last night from 4-8 and will be held today from 2-5 p.m. at Martinson Funeral Home; and 6:30-9 tonight at the church. A Rosary will be held at 7:30 tonight. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Sarah K. Fortino 9/25/2001

Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Church in Mt. Pleasant for Omena summer resident Sarah K. Fortino, who died Sept. 25. She was 84.

On Oct. 27, 1940, in Lansing, she married Victor C. Fortino, who preceded her in death in 1997. They bought a summer home in Omena in 1975.

Surviving are her children, Jim (Sharon) Fortino of Colorado, Vicki (Gary) Sova, Margaret (Greg) Travis, Mary (Tom) Krapohl and Chuck (Merrie Jo) Fortino, all of Mr. Pleasant.

Edward C Egeler 10/6/2001

Funeral services were held yesterday at Omena Presbyterian Church for Omena resident Edward Charles Egeler, who died Oct. 6 at Munson Medical Center. He was 81.

Mr. Egeler was born in Omena on April 6, 1920, the son of Edward Charles and Emma (Bahle) Egeler. On Feb. 14, 1940, in Lansing, he married Donna Jean Krider, who survives.

Mr. Egeler served during World War II before returning to Leelanau to become a cherry farmer and building contractor, for which his legacy will continue in the many homes he built in northern Leelanau County. During his elder years he crafted beautiful stained glass pieces.

He was a member of the Northport Board of Education, and Sunday School superintendent and board member at Northport Evangelical Covenant Church and Bayview Wesleyan Church of Traverse City. He was well known for his compassion, sense of humor and deep and abiding faith.

Also surviving are his children, Peter (Frances) of LaFollette, Tenn., Edward (Carol) of Norristown, Pa., and Anna Marie (Rev. William H.) Rogers of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Pauline Collett of Traverse City; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, George; and a sister, Marjorie Olene.

Memorials may be directed to the Munson West 4 Oncology unit, the American Bible Society of a charity of one’s choice.

Gerald Leo Kelly Jr. 9/12/2001

Funeral services were held Friday for Lake Leelanau resident Gerald Leo Kelly Jr., who died Sept. 12 at Munson Medical Center. He was 65.
Mr. Kelly was born in Detroit on Nov. 11, 1935, the son of Gerald Leo and Edna (Tomes) Kelly Sr. On June 13, 1959, in Pontiac, he married Mary Lou Sharnowski, who survives.
Mr. Kelly served as a military policeman in the Army in Germany, and was a member of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local No. 85. Mr. Kelly was an avid outdoor sportsman, and loved to spend time with his grandchildren.
Also surviving are two daughters, Brenda (Scott) House of Austin, Texas and Yvonne Lincoln Blakely of Manteca, Calif.; four sons, David (Anne Core) Kelly of Minneapolis, Greg Kelly of Eugene, Ore. and Scott and Todd Kelly, both of Traverse City; three sisters, Anita Chappel, Geraldine Quick and Karen Burkholder, all of Traverse City; and eight grandchildren.
Memorials may directed to the American Red Cross or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Blanche M. Aprill 9/22/2001

Funeral services were held Tuesday for Cedar resident Blanche M. Aprill, who died Sept. 22. She was 82.
Mrs. Aprill was born on Dec. 28, 1918, in Suttons Bay, the daughter of Rufus and Anna (Hanson) Tatch. In 1936 in Pontiac, she married Joseph Aprill, who preceded her in death in 1987.

Mrs. Aprill moved to Dearborn as a mother and homemaker, and lived in Cedar since 1973. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, and sewing and crocheting.

Surviving are her sons, Ralph (Phyllis) April of Beulah and Ronald (Dixie) Aprill of Empire; two daughters, Bernice (Fred) Lesinski of Lake and Sharon (Pete “Don”) Labadie of Cedar; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a sister and a grandchild.
Interment was in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the National Kidney Foundation, or the American Diabetes Association.
