Margaret C. Bates 9/20/2001
A memorial service was held Tuesday for former Glen Lake resident Margaret Carlson Bates, who died Sept. 20 at Munson Medical Center. She was 87.
Mrs. Bates was born in Boston on Nov. 15, 1913, the daughter of Frederick and Flora (Bellinger) Carlson. On Dec. 28, 1979, at her home on Glen Lake, she married Dr. Harlow Bates, who preceded her in death in 1987.
Mrs. Bates graduated from Starratt School for Girls in Chicago, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree from Northwestern University. She taught elementary classes in Jackson from 1936-1941; and in Traverse City from 1941-1945. She was a principal of a junior high school in Glencoe, Ill., from 1945-1969, and then taught 10 years at Glen Lake Community Schools.
Mrs. Bates received the “Good Samaritan Award” from the Order of the Eastern Star, and was named ‘teacher of the year” in 1978. The Margaret Carlson Learning Center in Glencoe was named after her. She was also a member of the First Congregational Church in Traverse City and the Leelanau Republican Women’s Organization.
Surviving are three step-daughters; two sisters-in-law, Ida Bell Collins of Detroit and Grace Bates of Rogers City; and a special friend, Katherine Stearns of Glen Arbor.
Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City. Memorials may be directed to the Bellinger, Carlson, Bates Scholarship Fund at Glen Lake Community Schools, or to a charity of one’s choice.
Robert E. Burton 9/25/2001
A memorial service will be held at a later date for Leelanau Township resident Robert E. Burton, who died Sept. 25 at Munson Medical Center. He was 74.
Mr. Burton was born in Detroit on Feb. 16, 1927. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University Of Michigan, and worked in corporate and academic library settings. Included were Union Carbide Corp., the University of Michigan and the University of Buffalo. He retired in 1988 as director of libraries at the State University of New York College of Arts and Sciences at Plattsburgh.
Mr. Burton enjoyed observing nature, rose gardening, bird feeding, photography, cooking, genealogy, golf, music and Michigan football. He authored several books, including “Roses: A Bibliography.” He served on the Northport Board of Education and was librarian for the Leelanau Conservancy.
Surviving are his wife, Colleen Potter-Burton; children Richard LaBarr, Nelson Burton, Marjorie Caldwell and Denise Burton; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Kathryn ‘Pat’ Picard 10/1/2001
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Church in Saginaw for Kathryn P. “Pat” Picard, who died Oct. 1 at her home on Glen Lake. She was 74.
Mrs. Picard was born on Jan. 20, 1927, in Grand Rapids. She taught in Saginaw schools, and was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, League of Catholic Women, Junior League, American Needlework Guild, Lawyers Wives of Michigan and St. Mary’s Auxiliary. She also was active in the Dunes Ladies Golf League, volunteered at the Empire Museum and was an active member of the Glen Arbor Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving are five children, Peter J. Picard of Glen lake, Chris (Patty) Picard of Saginaw, Michelle (William) Richter of Saginaw, Jeffrey A. Picard of New York and Guy F. (Kellie) Picard of Granger, Ind.; a brother, Thomas McGurrin; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, William McGurrin; and a sister, Betty Russell.
Private intermenty will be held at St. Philip Neri Cemetery in Empire. Friends may call at Deisler Funeral Home in Saginaw today from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. She will lie in state at the church Friday from 10 a.m. until the funeral Mass. Selma Jean Vingsness 9/23/2001
A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Lutheran Cemetery in Suttons Bay for Selma Jean Vingsness, who died Sept. 23 at her Suttons Bay home. She was 63.
Mrs. Vingsness was born on Oct. 13, 1937, in Northport, the daughter of Louis and Fern (Charter) Jacob. On Sept. 21, 1957, in Northport, she married Harold l. Vingsness, who survives.
Mrs. Vingsness enjoyed going to the Suttons Bay Friendship Center, of which she was vice president of the Board of Directors. Her only granddaughter was the life of her life. She is also survived by a sister, Jacqueline Mebert of Florida. She was preceded in death by her sons, David Martin and William Lee Vingsness; one sister; and three brothers.

Carl Lee Raphael 9/28/2001
Funeral services were held Tuesday for Peshawbestown resident Carl Lee Raphael, who died Friday at Munson Medical Center. He was 52.
Mr. Raphael was born on Sept. 20, 1949, in Traverse City, the son of Carl and Julia Cecila (Mashka) Raphael.
Mr. Raphael was employed as a roofer, and was a well-known Native American artist. He was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa Chippewa Indians, and enjoyed participating in powwows.
Surviving are four children, Nicole (Shane) Sundell, Carl Lee Raphael Jr., Benjamin Calkins and Robert Calkins; sisters Rosemary Hawley, Wanda Raphael, Debbie Raphael, Robin Raphael (Greg Sawmick) and Peggy (Bruce) Rocha; two brothers, Clayton “Duke” Raphael and Paul (Tanya) Raphael; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Duane.
Services were held in the home of his brother, Paul Raphael. Burial was in Kateri Tekakwitha Cemetery.
Charles C. Rubnar 9/30/2001
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church for Northport and Green Valley, Ariz. resident Charles ( "Charlie”) Christian Rubnar, who died Sept. 30 at Leelanau Memorial Care Center. He was 86.
Mr. Rubnar was born on Aug. 5, 1915, in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Henry and Amelia (Landmesser) Rubnar. In 1947, he married Justina Gloria Pereda, who survives.
Mr. Rubnar was a graduate of Dickson High in Jersey City, and attended Western Michigan University. He served in the Army from 1941-45, and was Leelanau County’s sole survivor of Pearl Harbor. He subsequently fought in the invasion of Saipan. He worked in sales for Armour & Co. for 46 years.
A lifelong Lutheran, Mr. Rubnar was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and Desert Hills Lutheran Church in Green Valley. He was a member of the Leelanau Players, an active community volunteer and champion of civil rights and environmental causes. He served on the council for Chamber Arts North, conducted wheelchair exercises at Leelanau Memorial Health Care Center, and was a volunteer at Grand Traverse Lighthouse.
Also surviving are his daughters, Karen (James) Grotberg of Ann Arbor and Anna (Paul) Armin of Pictou, Nova Scotia; a brother, Henry (Mary) Rubner of Twinsburg, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
A gathering will be held Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Aileen Shelburg 10/1/2001
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Trinity Church for Aileen Shelburg, who died Oct. 1 at her Northport home. She was 85.
Mrs. Shelburg was born on Oct. 24, 1915, in Hamilton, Ontario, the daughter of Meville and Mary Elizabeth (Barryman) Fleet. In 1937 in Windsor, Ontario, she married William L. Shelburg, who preceded her in death in 1982.
Mrs. Shelburg graduated from Windsor Technical School, and was a member of Alpha Gamma Phil sorority. She lived since 1983 in Northport, where she attended Trinity Church.
Surviving are a son, Louis (Mary) Melvin Shelburg of East Lansing; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Karen Elisabeth) Waskiewicz of Northport; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends called from 2-8 p.m. yesterday at Martinson Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Leelanau Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to House of Hope or Northport Fire and Rescue.
Gertrude Marie Cook 9/17/2001
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Kateri Tekakwitha Church for Gertrude Marie (Schocko) Cook, who died Sept. 17 at her Peshawbestown home. She was 69.
Mrs. Cook was born in Omena on Jan. 3, 1932, the daughter of Joseph and Rose (Allen) Schocko. She graduated from Ferris Institute in May, 1950, and attended Ferris State University. She was employed as a nurse’s assistant at Munson Medical Center and Leelanau Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Kateri Tekakwitha Church and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. She enjoyed reading, bingo and traveling to the Upper Peninsula.
Mrs. Cook married her first husband, Willard Weese, in 1958, and is survived by their children, Rose Marie Weese and Francis Joseph Weese. She then married Roger Jerry Cook, and is survived by their children, Margaret Ann Barajas, Elizabeth Joan Cook, JoAnne Miller and Patricia Mary Aquayo. She is also survived by a brother, Francis Stevens; 15 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were sisters Julia, Beatrice and Lillian; brothers Earl, Roy, Elmer and Leroy; and daughters Debra Kay Weese, Kathy Weese and Sally Weese.
Friends called from 2-7 p.m. yesterday at Martinson Funeral Home, with a Rosary held at 7 p.m. Visitation continued with a wake service at 9 p.m. at Kateri Tekakwitha Church. Burial was at Kateri Tekakwitha Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church.
Virginia Barker 9/13/2001
Funeral services were held Saturday for Empire resident Virginia Barker, who died Sept. 13 at her home on Lake Michigan. She was 89.
Mrs. Barker was born in Detroit on Dec. 22, 1911, the daughter of Robert and Euphemia Scott. Following her retirement as a supervisor of switchboard operators for Chrysler Corp., she spent her summer in Empire. She was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Surviving are her nephews, Robert (Nancy) Martin and James (Xenia) Martin. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bert Carriere and Mark Barker.
Memorials may be directed to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Marcella Ann Denoyer 9/4/2001
Memorial services will be announced at a later date for Marcella Ann Denoyer, who died Sept. 4 at Munson Medical Center. She was 59.
There will be no visitation. Oak Grove Cremation Center of Manistee is in charge of funeral services.
