Hazel Anna Wichern 7/12/2001
Funeral services were held Monday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for Hazel Anna Wichern, who died July 12 at Grand Traverse Pavilions. She was 100.
Mrs. Wichern was born on Dec. 9, 1900, in Good Harbor, the daughter of Herman and Bertha (Brager) Kropp. In 1921 in Good Harbor, she married Christian August Wichern, who preceded her in death in 1961.
Mrs. Wichern and her husband worked the family farm until 1969, when she moved to Traverse City. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aide.
Surviving are three children, Betty Olsen of Traverse City, Maxine Kirt of Traverse City and Ramona Duncan of Bloomington, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Walter; and two sisters, Charlotte and Orpha.
Burial was at St. Paul’s Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Good Harbor.
Andrew M. Perrault 6/7/2001
Funeral services were held Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland for Livonia resident Andrew M. Perrault, who died on June 7 in Livonia. He was 28.
Mr. Perrault was born in Northport on April 6, 1973, the son of Alvin and Esther (Krueger) Perrault of Suttons Bay.
Mr. Perrault was an electrical engineer with Panasonic for the past three years. He graduated from Suttons Bay High School in 1991, and from Michigan Technological University in 1996. He had a newspaper route and worked at Jon’s Barbershop while growing up in Suttons Bay.
Surviving are his parents; four brothers, Stephen of Ypsilanti, Paul and James, both of Nampa, Idaho, and Aaron of Ferndale; maternal grandmother Mrs. Albert (Margaret) Krueger; and his girlfriend Rita Freeman. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, The Rev. Albert Krueger; and paternal grandparents, William and Della Perrault.
Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Charles G. Lovingood 5/22/2001
Charles G. Lovingood Sr., a summer resident of Glen Lake, died May 22 at his residence on Hilton Head Island, S.C. He was 84.
Dr. Lovingood was born in Louisville, Tenn., on Jan. 3, 1917. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and Cornell Medical College, and received a master of science in surgery from Ohio State University. He was a past president of the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, the Dayton Surgical Society and Montgomery County Medical Society. He was also chief of staff of Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, one of many prestigious positions held during his career. During World War II, he served in the Army Medical Corps, retiring as a major.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth McCally Lovingood; three daughters; a son; a stepson; a stepdaughter; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A service was held May 26 on Hilton Head Island, which will be followed by a memorial service June 18 at Woodland Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel in Dayton. Memorials may be directed to Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 1857, Bluffton, S.C. 29910.
Barbara B. Cosden 5/25/2001
A memorial service has been held for Darien, Conn. resident Barbara Ball Cosden, who died May 25 at Stamford Hospital, Stamford, Conn. She was 78.
Mrs. Cosden was born on Feb. 22, 1923, in Muncie, Ind., the daughter of Edmund Arthur and Frances Davies Ball. She graduated from Dana Hall School and Pine Manor Junior College, both located in Wellesley, Mass. She was a member of the Country Club of Fairfield, Green Farms Garden Club, Junior League of New York, Daughters of the American Revolution and Mayflower descendants.
Surviving are five daughters, Carolyn B. Foley of Port Chester, N.Y., Lucy L. Foley of Washington, D.C., Claire E. Foley of Houston and Laura D. Sharff of Cornish, N.H.; a brother, George A. Ball of Leland; a sister, Dorothy B. Friestedt of Bowie, Md.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Dr. William T. Foley and Joshua S. Cosden Jr.

Elsie June Stenback 4/30/2001
Funeral services were held Friday for Oak Park and Glen Arbor summer resident Elsie June Stenback, who died April 30 at her Glen Lake home. She was 70.
Mrs. Stenback was born in Detroit on May 15, 1930, the daughter of George and Rose (Sutake) Letwin. On June 4, 1949, she married Olof Rudolf Stenback, who preceded her in death.
She graduated from Pershing High School in Detroit. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she enjoyed spending time with her family in the Glen Lake area.
Surviving are children George Olof Stenback of Glen Arbor, Douglas Gerald (Jeanne) Stenback of Troy, Karen Rose (Richard) Costigan of Royal Oak and Kirk Rudolf Stenback of Glen Arbor; and five grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by sisters Anita and Linda.
Interment was at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Irene G. Karns 5/1/2001
Funeral services were held yesterday for former Maple City resident Irene G. Karns, who died May 1 in San Jose, Calif. She was 79.
Mrs. Karns was born on May 22, 1921, in Maple City, the daughter of Delbert and Tillie (King) Flaska. She lived most of her life in Maple City.
A homemaker, she enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include a son, Don Karns of Maple City; a daughter, Nancy (Jack) Sette of San Jose, Calif.; brothers Charles (Marilyn) Flaska, Raymond Flaska and Glen Flaska, all of Maple City; a sister, Gladys Newman of Cedar; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers Edward and Gene Flaska.
Donley Hunt 5/4/2001
Donley Hunt died May 4 at his Bingham Township family farm. He was 70.
Mr. Hunt was born on March 17, 1931, on the family farm, the son of Howard A. and Hilda A. (Clark) Hunt. He was a 1949 graduate of Traverse City High School, and served in the Marines from 1952-54. A master carpenter, he retired from Meijer’s in 1995.
Mr. Hunt was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed golf, baseball, bowling and gardening. He made friends of all ages easily, and because of his birthday considered himself an “honorary Irishman.”
Surviving are six children, Lori (Mitch) Ware of Grand Rapids, Chuck (Lisa Starr) Hunt of Bloomington, Minn., Stan Hunt of Traverse City, Lisa (Keith) Ferguson of Interlochen, Angela Minier of St. Louis, Mich., and Shannon Hunt of Traverse City; six brothers and sisters, Margaret (Kenneth) Timm of Traverse City, June Newhall of Santa Cruz, Calif., Doris Core of Traverse City, Helen (Joseph) Swanson of El Paso, Texas, George Hunt of Leesburg, Va., and Bonnie Slaven of Traverse; and 11 grandchildren.

Pauline Garvin 4/24/2001
Services have taken place for lifelong Cedar resident Pauline Garvin, who died April 24. She was 100.
Mrs. Garvin was born on Oct. 21, 1900, the daughter of Nicholaus and Frances (Rzepinski) Narloch—the fourth oldest of 17 children. On June 22, 1921, she married Felix Garvin, who preceded her in death on May 27, 1988.
A homemaker, she was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and a member of the Holy Rosary Society.
Surviving are nine children, Matilda Pleva of Cedar, Anthony (Theresa) Garvin of Traverse City, Roman (Ruth) Garvin of Traverse City, Stanley (Proxie) Garvin of Maple City, Alexander (Ellen) Garvin of Cedar, Josephine (John) Boczar of Dearborn, Elizabeth (Edd) Newell of Kingsley, Frances Mills of Brethren and Maxine (Ben) Taylor of Beulah; one sister, Susan Jorginson of Wisconsin; two brothers, Andrew (Ann) Narloch of California; and Anthony Narloch of England; 36 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Agnes and Marie; two sisters, Sebalda and Victorianna, who were Felician nuns; two grandchildren; and 13 brothers and sisters.

Madelyn A. Wendels 4/26/2001
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday at St. Philip Neri Church for Madelyn Ann Wendels, who died April 26 at her Empire home. She was 72.
Mrs. Wendels was born on Oct. 5, 1928, in Fond du Lac, Wis., the daughter of James Francis Sr. and Nora Marie Gross Keenan. On Feb. 7, 1953, she married John Leonard Wendels at St. Patrick’s Church, Fond du Lac.
Mrs. Wendels graduated from Goodrich High School in Fond du Lac. She was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling and was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren. She volunteered for the Glen Lake Community Library, Empire Heritage Group, Empire Fire Dept. and Red Cross Bloodmobile.
Surviving are her husband, John; two daughters, Judith (Leonard) Shalda of Empire and Donna (Kevin) Cierpial of Holton; six sons, James and Michael (Laura) Wendels, both of Empire, David (Anna) Wendels of Maple City, Daniel (Joann) Wendels of Traverse City, Donald (Susan) Wendels of Gulfport, Miss. and John (Kim) Wendels of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters, Rosemary (Joseph) Fortunato and Elaine (Ray) Bauer, both of Fond du Lac, and Patricia (Robert) Hornes of Sheboygan, Wis.; a brother, Jerome of Fond du Lac; a brother-in-law, Robert (Lou) Wendels of Sun City, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Kay Keenan and Shirley Keenan, both of Fond du Lac; and 16 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald, James Jr. and Robert; and three sisters-in-law, Vera, Joy and Ruth.
Internment will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Empire Fire Department or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
