Charles R. McMillian 9/23/2001
Funeral services were held Saturday at Glen Lake Community Reformed Church for Charles Robert McMillan, who died march 23 at his Empire home. He was 76.
Mr. McMillan was born in Detroit on Sept. 17, 1924, the son of Charles Cummins and Mary (Mulhall) McMillan. On Sept. 9, 1961, in Detroit, he married Gladys Sharp, who survives.
Mr. McMillan graduated from Detroit Northern High School in 1942, and earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with highest honors from the University of Detroit in 1946. He was a sales manager of industrial equipment in the Detroit area.
The McMillans were summer residents of Empire beginning in 1970, and moved to Empire upon his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the Empire Planning Commission, Empire Lions Club and Glen Lake Community Reformed Church.
Mr. McMillan was an avid golfer, and enjoyed time with his family, sketching and pottery.
Also surviving are a son, John McMillan of Empire and Arlington, Va.; and a daughter, Kathy McMillan of New York City, N.Y. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald McMillan.
Spring burial will be in Empire Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Glen Lake Community Reformed Church or the Empire Fire and Rescue Squad.
Jack E. Deller 2/4/2001
Funeral services were held yesterday at the Constantine High School gymnasium for Constantine resident Jack E. Deller, who died Feb. 4 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo following a short illness. He was 54.
Mr. Deller was born on June 23, 1946, in Coldwater, the son of Russell (Jack) and Mae (Letts) Deller. He graduated from Angola High School, and received a bachelor’s degree from Albion College and a master’s degree from Western Michigan University. He was principal at the Constantine middle and high schools, where he also had served as athletic director. The Dellers have a cabin on Glen Lake.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Deller; daughters Laura (Brett) Strick of Jenison and Sarah Deller of Holland; sons Brian (Mary Anne) Deller and Matthew Deller, both of Kalamazoo; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sandra Sellers.
Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire. Memorials may be directed to the Jack Deller Memorial Scholarship fund or to Rose Arbor Hospice Residence.
Dexter Ferry 9/15/2000
Grosse Pointe Farms and Northport resident Dexter Ferry died Sept. 15. He was 92.
Mr. Ferry was the grandson of the founder of the Ferry-Morse Seed Co., and his family had been active in Detroit and Grosse Pointe civic affairs since the mid 19th century. He served as trustee and past president of the Detroit Science Center, University Liggett School and the Michigan Children’s Aid Society.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Marian D. (Kelly) Ferry; a son, Mason Ferry of Grosse Pointe; daughters Marian F. Williams of Chappaqua, N.Y. and Julie F. Hale of Portland, Maine; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Leroy ‘Lee’ Moore 9/24/2000
LeRoy “Lee” Norman Moore of Solon Township died Sept. 24 at Munson Medical Center. He was 75.
Mr. Moore was born on Dec. 10, 1924, in Detroit, the son of Norman K. and Mildred F. (Scott) Moore. On June 11, 1955, in Remus, he married Mary A. (Hanson) Moore.
Mr. Moore has been a resident of the area since 1955, and taught for 20 years until 1985 at Glen Lake High School. He taught math and drivers education, was an adviser to the ski club and scouted opposing teams for the Glen Lake basketball program. He was a World War II veteran, and a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Lee (Put) Kiella and Melissa “Missy” (Dave) Hubbell, both of Traverse City; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Nowak.
Burial will be in Solon Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
Rosalie M. Ferguson 9/16/2000
Funeral services were held Tuesday for Traverse City resident Rosalie Marjorie “Rosie” Ferguson, who died Sept. 16. She was 73.
Mrs. Ferguson was born on April 21, 1927, in Northport, the daughter of Clarence and Ethel (Calhoun) Blacken. On Jan. 8, 1945, at Garfield Park Methodist Church in Chicago, she married James E. Ferguson, who survives.
Mrs. Ferguson was employed by Ameritech for 22 years as an operator and in building services. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Sons of Norway, and enjoyed volunteering for charities and working in her flower garden. Her love of life and humor will be remembered by all who knew her.
Also surviving are her children, Carl R. Ferguson, Robert L. Ferguson and Patricia J. Ferguson—all of Traverse City; and two sisters, Careman Strickland and Carol Chanee—both of Traverse City.
She was preceded in death by brothers Dennis, Glenwood, Grant, Eugene, John, Donald and Dean; and by a sister, Marion Davis.
Memorials may be directed to the Grand Traverse Children’s Garden at the Traverse Area District Library or to a charity of one’s choice.
Anna S. Sollie 9/24/2000
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City for Anna S. Sollie, who died Sept. 24 at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac. She was 95.
Mrs. Sollie was born on July 28, 1905, in Sondrums, Sweden, the daughter of Goran and Selma (Carlsson) Swanson. In Suttons Bay on June 22, 1931, she married Ole H. Sollie, who survives.
Also survivors include two daughters, Marie (Don) Rennie of Cadillac and Ann (George) Kimball of North Muskegon; three sisters, Eva Nelson of Traverse City, Martha Kiessel of Lake Leelanau and Margaret (Gene) Stallman of Suttons Bay; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers; and one sister.
Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Thursday, just prior to funeral services. Memorials may be directed to the Suttons Bay Bible Church Building Fund.
Helen Louise Schaub 9/18/2000
Funeral services will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for Cedar resident Helen Louise (Sylt) Schaub, who died Sept. 18 at Munson Medical Center. She was 89.
Mrs. Schaub was born in Lake Leelanau on Aug. 12, 1911, the daughter of Lars Larson and Martha (Bahle) Sylt. On Nov. 4, 1930, in Lake Leelanau, she married Paul Oscar Schaub, who preceded her in death in 1967.
A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mrs. Schaub enjoyed her years of farming and gardening. She also shared many happy years with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are eight children, Eva (James) Blohm of Saginaw, James (Wilma) Schaub of Traverse City, Philip (Carol) Schaub of Traverse City, Jenny (John) McAulay of Prescott, Bernard (Betty) Schaub of Saginaw, David (Joann) Schaub of Suttons Bay, Mary (Melvin) Schaub of Lake Leelanau and Elizabeth McNeil of Saginaw; a daughter-in-law, Elvera Schaub of Grawn; 25 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Fredrick and Norman; one grandson; one granddaughter; one great-grandson; three sisters, Gina, Ann and Clara; and two brothers, Louis and Clarence.
Friends may call today from 2-9 p.m. at Martinson Funeral Home, where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Church.
Edward E. Schultz 8/25/2000
Funeral services were held Tuesday for Edward E. Schultz, who died Aug. 25 at his Bendon home. He was 67.
Mr. Bendon was born in Suttons Bay on Jan. 5, 1933, the son of Emil and Mary (Seitters) Schultz. On June 4, 1986, in Manton, he married JoLyne Smith, who survives.
Mr. Schultz was a long-time resident of Leelanau County and a retired farmer. He loved children, gardening, animals and horses, which he used for farming as a young man. He was a childhood member of Keswick United methodist Church.
He is also survived by three sons, Matthew Conn of Murray, Utah, Timothy (Lori) Conn of Mason and Patrick (Dianna) Conn of Lansing; a sister, Eileen (Donald) Wares of Traverse City; a brother, Richard (Ruth Ann) Schultz of Danbury, Conn.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Schultz and a sister, Mary Louise Schultz.
Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Manton. Memorials may be directed to the Diabetes Association or Munson Medical Center.
Orville R. Bahle 9/5/2000
Former Suttons Bay resident Orville Raymond Bahle died Sept. 5 at a hospital in Chula Vista, Calif. He was 90.
Mr. Bahle was born in Ludington, Mich., the son of Esten and Laura Gronseth Bahle. At 8 years-old his family moved to Suttons Bay, where he attended school. On Oct. 13, 1934, he married Marion Hockstad of Traverse City, who preceded him in death in 1981.
Mr. Bahle was a sailor on the Great Lakes for several years, after which he was an electrician. During World War II he was a model maker at the tank arsenal at Centerline, Mich., a profession he continued until his retirement in 1972 to his home in Lexington, Mich. He recently moved to California to be with his daughter.
Survivors include his daughter, Janice (Homer) Craig of Chula Vista, Calif.; two sisters, Realpha Clausen of Suttons Bay and Thelma (Ike) Hagen of Northport; brothers Lester and Kenneth (Helen) of Suttons Bay; grandchildren; and great-granchildren. He was also preceded in death by a son, Peter in 1983; and a brother, Gordon on June 16, 2000.
Interment will be in Lexington. Memorials may be given to the Lutheran Church Building Fund of Suttons Bay or a charity of one’s choice.
