Arthur Junior Baldwin

Funeral services were held Monday at Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church for Arthur Junior Baldwin, who died Dec. 15 at his Peshawbestown home. He was 68.
Mr. Baldwin was born in Leelanau County on Sept. 20, 1931, the son of William and Margaret Agnes (Sands) Baldwin. On June 24, 1972, in Peshawbestown, he married Catherine C. Harris, who survives.
Mr. Baldwin served in the Army in Japan and Korea. An avid hunter and fisherman, he loved his family and friends. He was a member of Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
Also surviving are seven step-children, George Yannott Jr., Sandra Sue Yannott and Florine Marie Yannot-all of Suttons Bay, Richard Arnold Yannott-Hart of Grand Rapids, Loi Ellen Chambers of Suttons Bay, Gail Lynn Yannott-Woods of Grand Rapids and Donald Yannot of Peshawbestown; a brother, Lavern Scott of Thompsonville; a sister, Mary Zubler of Houston; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Burial was in Kateri Tekakwitha Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church.
Alfred L. Westol

A memorial service will be held in July at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland for former resident Alfred L. Westol who died at home in Ocala, Fla., on April 4. He was 88.
He was born in Chicago on Aug. 25, 1914, the youngest son of Louis and Mary Westol. On Sept. 19,1942, in Birmingham, he married the former Helen Steffens of Leland who preceded him in death in 1997.
He was a 1936 graduate of Western Michigan University. He served as an Army officer in Europe during World War II. He worked for the State of Michigan for many years, becoming the director of the County Audit Division. Upon his retirement in 1975, he and his wife became seasonal residents of Leland until moving to Florida full time in 1995. He was a former chairman of the Democratic party of Leelanau County.
He is survived by his sons, David of Carmel, Ind., and John, of Ocala; and four grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death was a son, Tim, in 2000.
Elsie Belanger-Lederle

A memorial Mass was celebrated Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau for lifelong resident Elsie Belanger-Lederle who died at home April 2. She was 89.
She was born Jan. 5, 1914, in Gills Pier, the daughter of Anthony and Mary Kovarik. In 1933, she married Daniel Belanger, who preceded her in death in 1973. On June 3, 1978, in Lake Leelanau, she married Nicholas R. Lederle, Sr., who died in 1993.
She was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was the retired owner of Dan's Power House in Lake Leelanau.
She is survived by her daughter, Ruth (Paul) Leugers of Cincinnati; a son, Daniel (Molly) Belanger of Bay City; one stepson, Nicholas (Susan) Lederle Jr. of Leland; a sister, Irene Lyons of Lake Leelanau; 10 grandchildren; one step grandchild; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Gregory, in 1957; a stepson, Neal Lederle; and two sisters, Esther and Beatrice.

Irene M. Krieger

A Requiem Mass was celebrated Monday in Suttons Bay for Irene M. Krieger of East Leland who died March 27 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport. She was 96.
Born in Lake Leelanau (Provemont) on May 30, 1906, she was the daughter of Simon B. and Frieda (Erdt) Schaub. On Aug. 29, 1939, in Detroit, she married Robert Krieger, who survives.
She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Lake Leelanau and earned a teaching degree at Detroit Teachers College in 1924. She taught in Detroit Public Schools until 1950 when she retired to her home in East Leland.
Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Emma and Emelia Schaub and Alice Allen; and four brothers, Alvin, Jack, Raymond and Henry Schaub.
Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, and memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s School in Lake Leelanau.
Carl Oleson

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church for Glen Arbor resident Carl Oleson, who died Dec. 25 at Maple Valley Nursing Home. He was 82.
Mr. Oleson was born in Toledo on June 7, 1917, the son of Carl A. and Lucy (Andreson) Oleson. He was 82.
Mr. Oleson served in the Cost Guard from 1939 to 1947. He spent 2 1/2 years in the southeast Pacific during World War II, during which he received three Bronze Stars for valor. His tenure included the battle of Guadalcanal and the invasion of Bougainville, when he ran landing barges off attack transports. He was also stationed in South Haven, Charlevoix and the Grand Traverse light house.
A fishing and hunting enthusiast, he was owner and operator of the Sportsman Shop in Glen Arbor for 37 years. He was also chairman of the board of education at Glen Arbor before consolidation, president of the PTA, a member of the fire department, chairman of the fish and game committee of the Glen Lake Business and Resort Bureau and of the Glen Lake Association.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Glen Arbor; a son, Carl Oleson III (Jackie) of East Lansing; three daughters, Sharon (Don) Shaw of High Springs, Fla., Sandra Zemaitis of Grand Rapids and Candace Oleson of Glen Arbor; five grandchildren; and two great-granchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lois; and a brother, Robert.
Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire. Memorials may be directed to Glen Lake Community Reformed Church or a charity of one's choice.
Robert L. Vanderlaan

A gathering will be held today in Muskegon for Robert L. Vanderlaan of Cedar who died at home March 27. He was 72.
He was born Nov. 15, 1930, in Muskegon, to George and Dena (Tanis) Vanderlaan.
Mr. Vanderlaan served in the Air Force during the Korean War. His career also included service in law enforcement and legal investigations.
He is survived by the mother of his three sons, Norma Vanderlaan; their three sons, Jerry (Vicki) Vanderlaan of Muskegon, Greg (Heidi) Vanderlaan of Sparta and Jeff (Julie) Vanderlaan of Whitehall; his mother; a brother, Howard (Kay) Vanderlaan; two sisters, Joyce (Gord) Herman and Lois (Chuck) Jager; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, his son Gary, and a grandson.

Gerald A. Smith

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Suttons Bay Congregational Church for Gerald A. Smith of Suttons Bay who died March 8 at Munson Medical Center. He was 66.
He was born in Suttons Bay on May 23, 1936, the son of Alfred and Edna (McGovern) Smith. On June 30, 1956, at the Suttons Bay Congregational Church, he married the former Catherine H. Sanborn, who survives.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Marines from 1955 through 1958. He earned an associates degree in business at Northwestern Michigan College in 1959. From 1959 to 1965 he was a Leelanau County deputy and drivers license examiner. From 1966 through 1976 he worked as an insurance investigator. He later worked in real estate, then built the Suttons Bay Car Wash and Quaker State Auto Lube. He also operated a boat storage company from 1972-1995. In 1996 he and his family established the Key to the County restaurant in Lake Leelanau.
He was a member of the Northport Masonic Lodge and the Traverse City Shriners. He enjoyed boating and was an avid golfer.
Also surviving are his five sons, Jerome (Molly) and Michael, both of Suttons Bay, Tracy (Erin) of New York, Randal and Troy, both of Suttons Bay; a sister, Janet Morrison of Otsego; three brothers, Leon (Jane) Smith and Harley (Bonnie) Smith, both of Suttons Bay, Lynn Smith of Barefoot Bay, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Robert I. Mypio

A service of remembrance will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay for Robert I. Mypio who died March 15 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. He was 80.
He was born May 10, 1922, in Calumet, Mich., the son of Arthur and Dorothy (Richards) Mypio. On April 2, 1945, in Highland Park, Mich., he married the former Donna E. Gillet who preceded him in death in 2000.
Mr. Mypio served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and in the U.S. Air Force in the following years. He also served as a Detroit police officer, retiring in 1977 when he moved to Suttons Bay.
He was an active member of the Railroad Historical Society of Northwest Michigan and was a volunteer for the former Leelanau Scenic Railroad.
He is survived by his two sons, Bob (Petra) Mypio of Pennsylvania and Mike (Carol) Mypio of Ludington; a sister, Mary (Larry) Taylor of Novi; three brothers, Arthur Mypio of Paso Robles, Calif., Carl (Shirley) Mypio of Indian River, and John Mypio of Indian River; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Roberts, and brother, Willard Mypio.
