Basil Jankowski

A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at St. Rita-St. Joseph Catholic Church for former Maple City resident Basil Jankowski, who died Dec. 17 at Leelanau Memorial Hospital. He was 86.
Mr. Jankowski was born in Manistee on Dec. 31, 1912, the son of Stephan and Leona (Skipski) Jankowski. In 1941, he married Winifred Nachazel, who survives.
He attended schools in Maple City and graduated with a degree in accounting from Ferris State University. He taught school in Kasson Township from 1932-1940, after which he became postmaster at the Maple City Post Office.
Mr. Jankowski was stationed at various locations in the Army during World War II. After the war he returned to work as Maple City postmaster and later as a rural route carrier until retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Cedar-Maple City Lions Club, Boy Scouts of America Council, Kasson Township Grange and St. Rita's Men's Club. He built beautiful furniture, and enjoyed fishing and traveling.
Also surviving are three sons, Jerome (Jean) of Florida, Allan (Michele) of Traverse City and Nicholas of Traverse City; two daughters, Ann (Andy) Sharp of Toronto and Eileen of Traverse City; three sisters, Virginia (Frank) Zawilanski, Nettie (Wilbur) Leonard and Blanche Ottoman; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Sophie, Bernadine, Helen and Victoria; and a brother, Joseph.
Burial is planned for the spring at St. Rita's Catholic Church. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar-Maple City Lions Club or Mass intentions.
Frederick W. Channer

Long-time Leland summer resident Frederick W. Channer died Dec. 13. He was 90.
Mr. Channer was born in Chicago on Nov. 23, 1909, the son of George S. and Laura (Parsons) Channer. On Oct. 12, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he married Georganne Dunshee, who survives. The Dunshee family had summered in Leland, where the couple met, since 1898; the Channers since 1925.
A graduate of the University of Chicago, Mr. Channer worked for 50 years in the investment business. He was president of Channer Newman Securities Co., which specialized in underwriting and distributing municipal bonds. He was a charter member of the Inverness Golf Club, a member and former trustee of the Presbyterian Church of Barrington and president of the Palatine Safety Council. His hobbies were British history, golf, Victoriana and genealogy.
Also surviving are a daughter, Penelope; two sons, Christopher (Terri) and Kendall (Michele); two sisters, Constance Sturgis and Phyllis Beecher; and seven grandchildren.
Susan M. Hirschfield

A memorial Mass was celebrated Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Gills Pier for Susan M. Fischer Hirschfield who died March 27 at Munson Medical Center. She was 51.
Born in Detroit on June 28, 1951, she was the daughter of Stanley and Yvonne (Wittenberg) Fischer. On Nov. 3, 1973, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, she married Charles Hirschfield, who survives.
A 1970 graduate of Grosse Point South High School, she lived in Harper Woods until 1971 when she and Charles moved north to operate the Happy Hour Tavern near Northport where she was co-owner.
Also surviving are her father; a sister, Melissa (Tom) Mayhew of Northport; and a brother, Paul Fischer of Northport.
She was preceded in death by her mother; a sister, Holly Sudeman; and two brothers, Stan and Larry.

Jane E. Whims

Private family services will be held at a later date for former Suttons Bay resident Jane E. Whims who died March 19 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. She was 79.
Born in Detroit on Aug. 12, 1923, she was the daughter of Wallace F. and Evelyn B. (Dale) Bailey.
She is survived by a daughter, Jill (James) Munro of Suttons Bay; three sons, Mark (Anita) Whims of Minnetonka, Minn., Lew (Shirlee) Whims of Suttons Bay and Wally Whims of Lake Orion; a brother, Wallace (Geri) Bailey of Port Huron; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ann Bouchey; and a grandson.

Leroy ‘Lee’ Allington

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Suttons Bay for Leland resident Leroy “Lee” Allington who died at home Monday. He was 79.
He was born June 15, 1923, in Northport, to Albert Lyle and Dorthea Harriet (Steele) Allington. On Sept. 6, 1947, in Suttons Bay, he married the former Agnes Bernice Forseth, who survives.
He grew up in Dearborn and served in the Coast Guard during World War II. Upon returning to Suttons Bay, he established an aluminum extrusion die manufacturing business. He was also a cherry farmer.
Mr. Allington was a member of the First Evangelical Church of Suttons Bay, past treasurer of the Suttons Bay School Board, a member of the American Legion and the Suttons Bay Chamber of Commerce, and active in the Suttons Bay Little League.
Also surviving are his three sons, Albert (Donna) of Suttons Bay, Donald (Diane) of Northport and Stanley (Susan) of Lake Leelanau; his sister, Hellen Irene (John) Buckles of Tacoma, Wash.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Edward Orth Malott

Edward Orth Malott, a former seasonal resident of Leland, died June 29, 2002, in New Hampshire. He was 83.
He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Oct. 7, 1918, the only child of E. Orth and Ada (Decker) Malott. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Judith Calver Malott, of Gilsum, N.H.
In 1898, Mr. Malott’s grandparents, Morton and Anna Decker, were among the first families from Indiana to visit Leland regularly and subsequently build summer homes there. Mr. Malott traveled annually, from childhood until 1978, to his family’s cottage in Leland.
Also surviving are his two daughters, Carolin Malott of Boca Raton, Fla., and Dorcas Malott of Portland, Ore.
Mr. Malott’s photos of Leland people and places are being donated to the Leelanau Historical Society.
Martha R. Kilwy

Funeral services were held Friday at Bayview Wesleyan Church in Traverse City for former Cedar resident Martha Rosemary Kilwy who died Feb. 17 at Munson Medical Center. She was 84.
She was born in Indianapolis, Ind., on Nov. 16, 1918, the daughter of William L. and Martha Jane (Blakeley) Caudell. In 1954, in Indianapolis, she married Rev. Willard L. Kilwy. He preceded her in death on Dec. 2, 1991.
Mrs. Kilwy was a pastor’s wife and executive secretary for 16 years in Mt. Clemens, retiring to Cedar in 1981. She also worked at the Michigan State University Extension office in Lake Leelanau. She was a Michigan district director of Wesleyan Women, serving on the national board, and was a member of the Wesleyan Church for 73 years.
She is survived by three daughters, Sharon Bonita (David) Boroff of Allenton, Elaine (Mark) Fall and Teresa (Keith) Williams, both of Traverse City; a brother, Robert, of DeBury, Fla.; two sisters, Ruth Pittenger of Morrisville, N.C., and Wilma Jean Rasher of North Carolina; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Kilwy was also preceded in death by her brother Lester of Carmel, Ind., an infant sister at birth, and a great-grandchild.

Anna M. Wolf

Anna M. Wolf of Wayne, a long-time summer resident of Northport, died Jan. 5 after a long illness.
A memorial service was held on Jan. 11. Mrs. Wolf is survived by three children, Joan, Herbert Jr. and Cheryl Wolf. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Wolf Sr.
Sargent Karch

A memorial service was held at St. Alban's Church in Washington, D.C., for former Northport Point and Leland summer resident Sargent Karch, who died Dec. 2.
Mr. Karch was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of George F. and Mary Sargent Karch. A graduate of Princeton University and the University of Michigan Law School, he was the first labor relations lawyer hired by the National Football League. He was responsible for the last contract with NFL labor unions that did not include free agency.
Surviving are his wife, Karen of Bethesda, Md.; two sons, Josh of Los Angeles and Sargent C. of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Lindsey of Boston; a brother, George F. Karch Jr. of Chardon, Ohio; and sisters Jane Karch Martin of Moreland Hills, Ohio and Betsy Karch Wilson of Northport Point. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Backus.
