Albion A. Nemeskal

A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday at St. Rita’s Catholic Church for Albion Anthony Nemeskal of Maple City who died Feb. 17 at his home. He was 87.
He was born on the family homestead in Cleveland Township on Dec. 16, 1915, the son of Anthony J. and Bessie (Steimel) Nemeskal. On Feb. 23, 1952, at St. Rita’s Rectory in Maple City, he married Vera Mary Shimek, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany and France. He worked for 43 years for Harris McBurney of Jackson as a public utility contractor, retiring in 1977.
Mr. Nemeskal was a member of St. Rita’s and St. Joseph Catholic churches. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
Also surviving are his three children, Mary Ann and Elizabeth Nemeskal of Maple City, and Anthony (Louise) Nemeskal of Traverse City; three grandsons and three step-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Francis Caron and Peter Nemeskal; and sisters, Helen Kalchik and Ruth Nemeskal.

Dallas Otto Brow

Burial services have been held at St. Mary's Cemetery for Lake Leelanau resident Dallas Otto Brow who died Dec. 3 at Munson Medical Center. He was 74.
Mr. Brow was born Nov. 18, 1928, in Flint, the son of Otto and Mary Louise (Knoblauch) Brow. On July 7, 1951, in South Bend, Ind., he married the former Patricia Ann Kipp, who survives.
Also surviving are his six children, Karla (Billy) Waire of Flushing, Shawne (Steve) Mellios of Bay City, Angela (Kirt Thornberg) Underwood of Traverse City, Kimberly (Mike) Curthes of Traverse City, Christopher (Denise) Brow of Traverse City, and Erik Brow of Lake Leelanau; brother Versal (Ellie) Brow of Flint; sisters Carol and Judy Brow of Lake Leelanau; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his brother Bernard and sister Beverly Chesney.
Harriet F. Withenbury

Service were held in Camden, S.C., on Dec. 3 for Harriet "Halley" Fleming Withenbury who died recently. She was 84.
She was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Caroline Allport Fleming of Chicago, Cincinnati and Leland. She was the widow of Russell Withenbury of Glendale, Ohio.
She is survived by her three children, her sisters Amy F. Chatfield of Leland and Lesley F. Redmond of Huntsville, Ala.; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard H. Fleming, and sister Caroline F. Fibbe.
Lillian M. Vidergar

Funeral services are planned for 8 p.m. Friday at the Union Lake chapel of the Elton Black and Son Funeral Home for Leland resident Lillian M. Vidergar, who died Dec. 13.
Mrs. Vidergar was married for 52 years to the late Rudy Vidergar. Surviving are two sons, John (Gail) Vidergar of Leland and Lyle (Marlene) Vidergar; a brother, Robert (Kitty) Fox; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday from 1-9 p.m. at the chapel, located at 1233 Union Lake Rd., White Lake.
George Field Hayes

A service of thanksgiving was held Saturday at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City for former Leelanau County resident George Field Hayes who died at home in Traverse City on Nov. 26. He was 68.
He was born July 20, 1934, in Belhaven, N.C., the son of Eugene L. and Martha Louise (Field) Hayes. On Aug. 18, 1956, in Saginaw, he married the former Willa Elizabeth Hathaway, who survives.
Mr. Hayes served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at Eastern Michigan University in 1960 and 1967 respectively. He began a teaching career in Dearborn Heights and transferred to Traverse City Area Public Schools from which he retired in 1993.
He served on the Glen Lake School Board from 1976 to 1981. He was a past member and former president of the Cedar-Maple City Lions Club, and was a tutor and board member of the Grand Traverse Area Literacy Council. He was an active member of Central United Method church and served on many of the church's boards.
Also surviving are his children, Anne Wallace (Michael) Riegler of Copemish, Robert Field (Victoria) Hayes of DeWitt and David Andrew (Jennifer) Hayes of Ypsilanti; brothers, Ben (Shirley) Hayes of Sterling Heights and James (Judy) Hayes of Saginaw; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Louise Easton; a brother, Richard; and a son, Christopher Paul Hayes.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Central United Methodist Church, the Grand Traverse Area Literacy Council, the American Cancer Society or the Cedar-Maple City Lions Club.
Thomas H. Doherty

A funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church in Traverse City for Cedar resident Thomas H. Doherty who died at home, Nov. 24. He was 82.
He was born Dec. 14, 1920, in Norwood, Mass. On June 26, 1947, he married Rosemary Jantzen of Bartelso, Ill., who survives.
Mr. Doherty served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a 1948 graduate of the University of Notre Dame. In 1983 he retired after a 31 year career with Uniroyal Corporation in Indiana.
In 1988, he moved to Cedar. He enjoyed photographing and sculpting. He and his wife volunteered regularly at the food pantry of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City.
Also surviving are his four children and seven grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the food pantry of Immaculate Conception Church or to Munson Hospice.
Robert H. Parkinson

A Masonic funeral service will be conducted Friday at the Empire Masonic Lodge at 3 p.m. for former Lime Lake resident Robert H. Parkinson, who died Dec. 2 at his home in Traverse City. He was 84.
Born Oct. 28, 1918, Mr. Parkinson was the son of Richard Thomas and Edna (Hunter) Parkinson of Capac.
Mr. Parkinson worked for the Detroit News for 43 years before retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Empire United Methodist Church, where he belonged to the Noon-tiders men's club.
A veteran of World War II, he served as an Air Force pilot. He was the past post commander of the American Legion Post No. 199; and a member of Disabled American Veterans, Empire Masonic Lodge No. 597, Valley of Grand Rapids and Valley of Traverse City Scottish Rite, Tall Cedars No. 102 Royal Arch Masons, and the Shrine Club of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Doris M. Parkinson of Traverse City; two sons, Donald H. (Claire) Parkinson of Clarkston and Douglas (Bonnie) Parkinson of Maple City; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Jack Parkinson.
Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Empire United Methodist Church.
Patrick P. Schopieray

A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Isadore for Patrick Paul Schopieray of Cedar who died Nov. 21. He was 71.
He was born Dec. 16, 1930, to Bernard and Dorothy (Gauthier) Schopieray. On Sept. 9, 1950, he married Maxine Stachnik, who survives.
Mr. Schopieray had been employed by Parts Manufacturing, Leonard Kropp Well Drilling, Cone Drive Gear, Traverse City Ironworks, and the R.M. Young Company where he retired in 1997. He was also the Centerville Township constable for many years, and belonged to the Michigan Sheriff's Association.
He was a lifetime member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church where he served as an usher and was on the parish council at the time the rectory was built. He also was a long time member of the Cedar Rod and Gun Club.
Also surviving are his children, David (Deborah) Schopieray of Cedar, Patti (Cameron) Keim of Cedar, and Tammy (R. Paul) Haywood of Traverse City; two brothers, Maurice (Gertrude Ann) Schopieray of Cadillac, and Alfred Schopieray of Cedar; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ronald, Robert, Barney, his cousin/brother Joseph Paul Schopieray; and his sister, Kathleen.
Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery followed the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Father Fred Foundation in Traverse City.
Della Schaub Maleski

A funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau for Della Schaub Maleski who died Nov. 22. She was 95.
Born in Lake Leelanau on June 18, 1907, she was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (DuPeron) Belanger. In 1925, she married Lawrence Schaub Jr., who preceded her in death in 1959. She married John Maleski in 1964, and he too preceded her in death in 1975.
She was a lifelong resident of Lake Leelanau and attended St. Mary's Church were she was a member of the altar society and the St. Mary's Quilters.
She is survived by six children, Avery (Jane Mary) Rexroat of Lake Leelanau, Milford James (Marie) Schaub of Suttons Bay, Marvin Lawrence (Edith) Schaub of Suttons Bay, Marcella Ann Schmer-Kedzie of Corona, Calif., Terrence J. Schaub of Traverse City and Sarah Cecilia (Blaise) Korson of Gills Pier; 26 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Jerry, Walter, Reuben, Orson and Alfred Belanger; four sisters, Elizabeth LaCross, Jenny Dufek, Lucy Alpers and Marie Schoonbeck; and her grandson, Terry Schaub.
Burial followed the Mass in St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary's School or Church Building Fund, or to Mass intentions.
Archie L. Eitzen

Graveside services with military honors were held Friday at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens for Archie L. Eitzen, who died Nov. 20 at Tendercare of Traverse City. He was 80.
Mr. Eitzen was born on May 12, 1922, in Chappell, Neb., the son of Carl and Luella (McArtor) Eitzen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Theodora, earlier this year.
Mr. Eitzen served in the Army during World War II. He was a salesman for a lumber company prior to moving to Michigan with his wife. He was a member of the VFW Cherryland Post No. 2780, and enjoyed deer hunting and golf.
Surviving are his sister, Ardith Bugai of Cedar; and five nieces including Marlene (Ed) Hahnenberg of Lake Leelanau.
