Mary Lou Bumgardner

A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church for Mary Lou Bumgardner of Suttons Bay who died Oct. 29 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was 68.
She was born July 5, 1934, in Northport, the daughter of Clarence and Loretta (Reicha) Popp. On Dec. 27, 1954, in Gills Pier, she married John Bumgardner who survives.
During World War II, she worked for the Selective Service Board. She later worked as an administrator for Farmers Home Administration and as a telephone operator. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Also surviving are her sons, Richard Allen (Joan) Bumgardner of Suttons Bay, Jonathan (Brenda) Bumgardner of Black River, Thomas (Shannon) Bumgardner of Suttons Bay, and Donald Bumgardner of Mississippi; four brothers, Clarence (Pat) Popp of Traverse City, Raymond (Diana) Popp of Tennessee, John (Diane) Popp of Midland, and James (Fran) Popp of Traverse City; three sisters, Geraldine (Gerald) Miller of Ludington, Dorothy (David) Lamb of Harrisburg, Penn., and Christine Ferguson of Portage; and 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Samantha Lynn.
Burial was in the Leelanau Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the charity of one's choice, or to Mass Intentions.
James L. Burnham

A memorial service is pending for James LaVerne Burnham who died Monday at his home in Suttons Bay. He was 67.
He was born April 16, 1935, in Fremont, the son of Howard LaVerne Burnham, Sr., and Catherine Jean (Vantil) Burnham. On Nov. 13, 1970, in Grand Rapids, he married the former Liia Pulck who survives.
Also surviving are his four daughters, Debi (Scott) Baxter of San Diego, Vickie Belknap of Kalamazoo, Laura Burnham of Colorado, and Beth Morgan of Fife Lake; his son Scott Burnham of Grand Rapids; and his brother Terry (Sally) Burnham of Vancouver, Wash. He was preceded in death by his brother Howard, Jr.
Jeanne G. Derrick

Burial services have been held in Cincinnati for Leland summer resident Jeanne G. Derrick of Naples, Fla., who died Oct. 22 in Florida. She was 81.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, F. John Derrick. The couple moved to Naples from Cincinnati in 1994.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, a volunteer of North Collier Hospital and a member of the Imperial Golf Course Country Club, all in Florida.
Also surviving are her three sons, John A. (Kathy) Derrick, Paul J. (Sally) Derrick, and Mark E. (Sally) Derrick, all of Cincinnati; five daughters, Joan (Roy) Newsome of Naples, Eileen (Richard) Schindler, Martha (Michael) Rauen, Julie (Erik) Grombala, all of Cincinnati; Sarah (Paul) Borzcik of Huntington Beach, Calif.; her twin brother, John J. (Susan) Gilligan, brothers Frank J. (Nancy) Gilligan, and Harry J. Gilligan, all of Cincinnati; 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Carol Ann Treadwell

A memorial Mass will be held Saturday in Anchorage for Leland summer resident Carol Treadwell, who died Oct. 21 in Alaska. She was 44.
She was born in Freeport, Long Island, N.Y., the daughter of Susan and Eugene Walsh, who survive. She moved to Alaska in 1990 after marrying Mead Treadwell, who also survives.
She worked in journalism, public relations and marketing in New York and later in Alaska. She was also involved in a variety of volunteer activities. Her two year battle with brain cancer, and her participation in pioneering new treatments for the disease, was the subject of a one-hour national television special edition of Dateline NBC which aired Sept. 6.
Also surviving are her sons, Timothy and William, a daughter, Natalie; brother John (Nancy) Walsh of Potomac, Md.; and sisters Laura (Tod) Citron of Atlanta, Ga., Betsy (Ed) Gennosa of Queens, N.Y., and Donna (Tom) Schantz of Valdez, Alaska.
Her son, John Read Treadwell, preceded her in death.
A Carol Treadwell Fund to support K-12 science and geography education in Alaska and brain-tumor research worldwide has been established through the Millennium Scholars Program. Memorial checks may be sent to the Millennium Society in care of the family at 528 N St., Anchorage, Alaska 99501.
Jason T. Smith

A private memorial service was held Monday in Northport for seasonal resident Jason T. Smith, who died Oct. 10 in Chicago. He was 85.
His wife, Ann, survives.
Mr. Smith was a fifth generation Chicagoan and a graduate of the University of Chicago. He served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He owned a material handling business in LaGrange, Ill. He and his family vacationed for many years at their cottage near Northport.
Also surviving are his two daughters, Sara and Jennifer, and three granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael, and was interred near him at the Leelanau Township Cemetery.

Barbara Ann Marshall

A memorial service was conducted Tuesday in Ft. Lauderdale for seasonal Leland resident Barbara Ann Marshall, who died Oct. 18 in Florida. She was 73.
Her husband, John S. Marshall, survives.
Mrs. Marshall was valedictorian of the Royal Oak High School class of 1947, and an honors graduate of the University of Michigan, class of 1951. She was a member of the Leland Country Club, and was also a licensed pilot.
Also surviving are her two daughters, Barbara Ann Marshall and Lory M. (James) Gross; one son, John S. (Joan) Marshall, Jr.; and three grandchildren.

Frank T. Judge, Jr.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday in New Jersey for former Leland resident Frank T. Judge Jr., who died in New Jersey on Oct. 13. He was 76.
Mr. Judge was born and raised in Jersey City, N.J. and live in Grosse Pointe Park and Leland until he returned to New Jersey five years ago. His wife, Jean Murphy Judge, survives.
Mr. Judge was a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., and served in the 8th Air Force in Europe during World War II. He worked for more than 40 years as a Ford Motor Co. executive in Dearborn and retired in 1991. He was involved in many philanthropic, community and human rights activities.
Also surviving are his two sons, Frank T. (Carolyn) Judge III of Ridgefield, Conn., and Gerard K. Judge of Chicago; two daughters, Marguerite F. and Kathleen E. Judge of Chicago; and two grandchildren. He was also the stepfather of six children and 10 step-grandchildren.

Germain J. Belanger

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau for lifelong resident Germain Joseph Belanger who died Oct. 21 at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City. He was 84.
Mr. Belanger was born June 20, 1918, in Lake Leelanau, the son of Jerry and Philomena (LaCross) Belanger. In 1937, at St. Mary's Church in Lake Leelanau, he married the former Dorothy Alice Denoyer, who survives.
Mr. Belanger served in the Army during World War II, and was a life member of the VFW. He worked as a brick layer and later worked as a machinist for Cone Drive Gear where he retired after 17 years of service.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Also surviving are his eight children, Linus (Marcie) Belanger, Jean Markham, Bill (Sandra) Belanger, Phyllis (Bob) Drow, Jackie (William) Pertner, Linda (Don) Morton, Sue (Stan) Allington, and Donna (Danny) Hughes; two brothers, Elmer (Elsie) Belanger, and Joseph (Violet) Belanger; sisters-in-law, Anna Mae Belanger, Mary Lou Belanger, and Geraldine Belanger; 29 grandchildren, and 39 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister Hilda Kates, and his brothers Robert, Abraham, Albert, Wallen and Leonard Belanger.

William R. Doroh

Funeral services were held Monday for seasonal Maple City resident William R. Doroh, who died Oct. 24 at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph. He was 85.
Mr. Doroh was born July 31, 1917, in Stevensville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leonida Doroh, in April 1985.
He served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific. He was employed at Superior Steel in Benton Harbor for 37 years before retiring.
He enjoyed spending time at his second home in Maple City with his family and friends. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Joseph, and attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Glen Arbor.
Surviving are his two sons, Jim (Becky) Doroh of Dowling, Mich., and Kurt Doroh of Bangor, Mich.; sisters Frieda Doroh of St. Joseph, Anita Nusbeital of Rochester; brother Gerhardt (Rose) Doroh of Benton Harbor; and two grandsons.
Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Edna and Hertha; and three brothers, Ray, Arthur and Martin.
Burial was at North Shore Memory Gardens in Hagar Shores, Mich. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran's Youth Building in St. Joseph.
Marcelline Heureux

A funeral Mass was held Tuesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City for long-time Leelanau County resident Marcelline Heureux who died Oct. 12 at Munson Medical Center. She was 85.
Born Sept. 17, 1917, she was the daughter of Edward and Eugenia (Rheaume) Salliotte. Her husband of 63 years, Joseph Hereux, preceded her in death.
Mr. and Mrs. Hereux owned and operated seven cherry, plum and apple orchards in Northport, Omena and Peshawbestown. Mrs. Hereux also worked at the J.W. Milliken Department Store in Traverse City for 25 years.
Surviving are her five children, Carol (Jim) Preuett of Traverse City; Alan (Magali Carrera) Heureux of Dartmouth, Mass.; Janis (Skip) Mebert of Suttons Bay; Linda (Paul) Denawetz of Farmington Hills; Barbara (Joe) Kompes of Cleveland, Ohio; three sisters, Lavena Reno of Dearborn; Evelyn Lucille (Bob) Carter of Gatlinburg, Tenn; and Jean (Mike) Dalos of Wyandotte; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy (Brow) Sheponski; and two brothers, Russell and Edsel, in infancy.
Burial was at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
