George W. Cowan

Funeral services were held downstate Monday for Dearborn and Suttons Bay resident George W. Cowan, who died April 24. He was 82.
Mr. Cowan was a veteran of World War II. He formerly resided in Bay City and Clarkston.
Surviving are his son, Arthur (Kathleen); daughters Joann (Ronald) Groeneveld and Marjorie (Walter) Poszywak; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Margaret E. Powers

A funeral Mass was held Tuesday for Margaret Elizabeth (Betty) Powers, who died April 23 at her Flushing home. She was 84.
Preceding her in death were her husband, William James; son William James Jr; and daughter, Nancy Louise.
Burial was in Bendle Cemetery. Donations may be made to the St. John Vianney School Band in her name and mailed to Rossell Funeral Home, P.O. Box 151, Flushing 48433.
Virginia W. Mitchell

A service celebrating the life of Virginia Walker Mitchell, 87, who died March 16, will be held Monday, April 29 at the Leland Community Methodist Church.
The service will begin at 3 p.m.
William V. Hancock

Memorial services will be held at a later date at Leland Community Methodist Church for lifelong Leland resident William V. Hancock, who died April 15 at Naples Community Hospital. He was 72.
Mr. Hancock in the son of Paul and Kathryn Hancock. A graduate of Hanover College, he was president for 37 years at Model Loan Services, a business which his father started in 1914. He was a Sergeant serving for the Army in the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Hancock was a member of Zionsville Presbyterian Church in Zionsville, Ind.; a lifetime member of Downtown Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis, and a member of the Leland Country Club and the Leland Yacht Club.
Surviving are his wife, Jane (Blomert) Hancock; two sons, Gregory of Gaston, Ind. and Paul R. (Moni) Hancock of Indianapolis; a daughter, Sara Jane (James) Cavanaugh of Granger, Ind.; a sister, Anita Jones of Kalamazoo; and two grandchildren.
Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. Memorials may be sent to the Leelanau Conservancy.
David W. Edwards

Funeral services were held yesterday for Omena resident David W. "Dave" Edwards, who died Nov. 14 at Munson Medical Center. He was 74.
Mr. Edwards was born on Jan. 12, 1925, in East Greenville, Ohio, the son of David W. and Jenny (Bloom) Edwards. On March 10, 1943, he married Jeanne Anne Simon, who preceded him in death in 1983. On Aug. 17, 1985, he married Betty Jane Bailey, who survives.
Mr. Edwards was a retired tool-and-die maker who was a resident of northern Michigan since 1955. He enjoyed euchre, going to casinos, hunting and fishing.
He was also a veteran of World War II, when he served as a tailgunner in the 790th bombing squadron.
Also surviving are five daughters, Judith Battle of Shreveport, La., Linda (William) Valleau, Kristee (Wade) Mariage and Jan (Alistair) Bediker-all of Traverse City, and Lorrie (Ken) Porte of Carlsbad, Calif.; three sons, David E. of Detroit, Thomas (Sara) of Owosso and Vincent (Jill) of Escondido, Calif.; four step daughters, Cindy Bailey and June Bailey, both of Suttons Bay, Phyllis Rice of Traverse City and Pauline (Tim) Koon of Interlochen; five step sons, Hank Bailey of Lake Leelanau, Joseph "Buddy" (Judy) Raphael of Suttons Bay, Randy (Mary) Bailey and George (Marty) Bailey, both of Benzonia and Scott (Becky) Bailey of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Charlotte "Sis" Copeland of Dearborn, Grayce Nye of Frankfort and Leona (David) Moross of Sanford; a brother, Robert (Terry) Edwards of Jacksonville, Fla.; 37 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ken, Tom and Norman Edwards.
Burial was in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the Traverse City Veterans of Foreign Wars, Cherryland Post No. 2780. Memorials may be directed to the same VFW post.

Bernice Lillian Peters

Funeral services were held Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church for Leland resident Bernice Lillian Peters, who died April 3 at Munson Medical Center. She was 86.
Mrs. Peters was born in Northport on May 28, 1915, the daughter of Esten and Gunhilde (Einerson) Garthe. On Oct. 29, 1934, in Illinois, she married H. Edmund Peters, who survives.
Mrs. Peters was baptized and confirmed in Bethany Lutheran Church in Northport, and was valedictorian at Northport Public School.
Also surviving are seven children, Elizabeth Doerr, John (Charlene) Peters, Richard (Patricia) Peters, Dorothy (Terrance) Carpenter, Wilfred (Ann) Peters, Peter (Joann) Peters and Mary (James) Peters; her sister, Esther Guptill; four brothers, Novald Garthe, Randolph (Ruth) Garthe, Steiner (Sigwalda) Garthe and Harry (Betty) Garthe; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Carlson; and an infant sister, Inga Louise Garthe.
Interment was in Beechwood Cemetery in Leland. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Robert L. Joseph Sr.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Paul's Lutheran Ev. Church in Saginaw for Saginaw resident Robert L. Joseph Sr. He was 68.
Mr. Joseph was born in Frankfort on March 18, 1934, the son of Sam and Eleanor Joseph, and grew up in Empire. On July 7, 1973, in Grand Rapids, he married the former Noda Boyd, who survives.
Mr. Joseph worked for Grand Rapids Foam Rubber before retiring in 1997 and moving to Saginaw. He was a member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church.
Also surviving are a son, Robert Lee Joseph Jr. of Saginaw; a brother, B.J. (Rosie) Joseph of Traverse City; a sister, Theresa Barth of Duarte, Calif.; three sisters, Georgiann Pussehl, Pat Boyd and Nora Juergenmeyer; and brothers-in-law George (Betty) Boyd and Tom (Carlene) Boys. He was preceded in death by a brother, two sisters and a sister-in-law.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery Memorials may be made to the church or V.N.A. Hospice Partners in Caring.
Betty L. Rizor

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at LaRue (Ohio) United Methodist Church for former Northport resident Betty L. Rizor, who died March 29 in Columbus. She was 74.
Mrs. Rizor was born on March 26, 1928, in LaRue, the daughter of Bernard and Catherine (Carter) Wright.
Mrs. Rizor was a former treasurer for the Village of Northport, where her family attended Trinity Church of Christ. She missed her friends in Northport, where she spent many of the happiest years of her life.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Robert; daughters Jennifer Lynn Proudley of Portland, Ore. and Tracy Kalchik of LaRue; and one grandchild.
Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to Trustees of LaRue UMC, the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
Phillip A. Fretheim

A burial service will be held in the spring in Leelanau Township Cemetery for Northport resident Rev. Phillip A. Fretheim, who died March 21 at Munson Medical Center. He was 85.
Mr. Fretheim was born on May 2, 1916, in New Effington, S.D., the son of the Rev. E. Andrew and Alma Poletta (Berg) Fretheim. In 1949, he married the former Norma Fredrickson of Northport, who survives.
Mr. Fretheim graduated from Manitowoc Business College and Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. After holding several jobs, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in a communication's center in Washington, D.C. In 1944, he was transferred to the V-12 Chaplaincy Corp. and sent to Mt. Airy Seminary in Philadelphia, where he graduated with a master's degree. He was discharged in 1946.
After a year of study at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., Mr. Fretheim was ordained into the ministry of the ELCA at Ephraim, Wis. He served churches in Northport, Suttons Bay, and several other communities until retiring in 1982, when he returned to Northport. He was a volunteer at Leelanau Memorial Care Center, substituted in pulpits of various area churches, and enjoyed horseshoes, bowling, golfing and fishing.
Also surviving are his children, Karen (Charles) Fredrickson of Suttons Bay and Paul (Ann) Fretheim of Grawn; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law, George (Elaine) Fredrickson of Northport; and three stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Erling H. Fretheim; a sister, Ada H.L. Fretheim of Minneapolis; and a sister-in-law, Randa Fredrickson of Northport.

Dr. Sidney Blum

Summer Maple City resident, Dr. Sidney Blum, died Jan. 23, 2002, in Dallas, Tex. He was 79.
Dr. Blum was an educator in Baltimore, Maryland and vicinity and served as a teacher and principal, and science specialist prior to his appointment as the Supervisor of Science Education for the Prince Georges County, Maryland school system. He retired in 1983. His life was marked by his devotion to science, and rationality, his love of music, and his gentle nature.
Dr. Blum was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Freda Blum. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Esther Blum, and by his children Dr. Joanne Blum (Dechow) of Dallas and Maple City, Dr. Eric Blum of Akron, OH, and Dr. Andrew Blum of Newton, MA, and seven grandchildren, Monica and Ian Dechow, Hanna Beth, Emmi, and Matt Blum, and Peter and Thomas Blum.
