Evelyn Caswell Grimes
January 8, 2010
Evelyn Caswell Grimes
Chelsea, MI (formerly of Dearborn, MI and St. Cloud, FL)
Evelyn Caswell Grimes passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on January 8, 2010 at Arbor Hospice following complications of her recent stroke. She was born to Ethel (Harris) and James Caswell on March 22, 1918 in Rossford, Ohio. She completed her education in Rossford. During high school she met her future husband, Dudley Edward Grimes. They were married on October 19, 1935. She was a resilient woman whose life included her brand new cottage being dumped into the lake by a tornado on Palm Sunday 1965, all her treasured antiques and family photos destroyed when the house in which they were stored burned to the ground after being struck by lightning in 1980, and having the roof blown off her house in Florida by Hurricane Charley in 2004. Thankfully, there was no loss of life in any of these events. Given some of her life experiences, her family understood her superstitions! Evelyn loved to travel, cook, garden, master crossword puzzles, read, and fish for bluegills and perch. She had a terrific sense of humor and loads of patience, which certainly helped when teaching her grandchildren how to fish, cook and garden. Most of all, Evelyn treasured her family. She is survived by her daughters, Leah Grimes of Kissimmee, FL and Linda McKinnon of St. Cloud, FL; six grandchildren to whom she was so loving and generous: Deborah (Bob) Coller of Pinckney, MI, Denise (Randall) Patrick of Irvine, CA, Elaine Zold (Matt Perkins) of Huntington Woods, MI, Sean Drohan of Ypsilanti, MI, Jon LaPere and Holly Zacharias both of Canton, MI. Eleven great-great grandchildren were blessed to know and to love her. Evelyn is also survived by her sister, Zella Corbin of Waterville, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two grandchildren, infant Kelly Ann Olson and Edward Zold. She will be remembered by her family with a private memorial service next summer . In lieu of flowers her family requests donations be sent to two organizations that exemplify her belief in the importance of teaching young people the joys of fishing (Project Fish www.projectfish.org) and how to grow healthy organic food while treading lightly on the earth (Project Grow www.projectgrowgardens.org).
