Donald R. McDowell
ISHPEMING -- Donald R. McDowell, age 69 of 470 Saginaw St. Ishpeming passed away Friday, February 22, 2002 at the Marquette General Hospital.
Donald was born May 5, 1932 in Ishpeming to the late William & Cecilia (Jandron) McDowell. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korea Conflict.
Don worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Mining Company for 28 years, retiring from the Brownstone Shop in 1978. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church & the Ishpeming V.F.W. Post 4573. Don enjoyed deer hunting, and playing cribbage in the Ishpeming Cribbage League.
Don is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary (Rosenthal) McDowell, 4 children; June (James) Sorensen of Waterford, MI, Lisa (Robert) Lyons of Dubuque, IA, Randy J. (Lori) McDowell of West Allis, WI and Cindy (E. Lee) Cole of Endicott, NY, a sister Joyce Peterson of Marquette, a brother Edward McDowell & Miss Vi of Baltimore, MC, 10 grandchildren: April McDowell, James Sorensen Jr., Sara Sorensen, Shannon Lyons, John J. Lyons, Crystal Lehmann, Sarah McDowell, Ashley McDowell, Cynthia Holdren and Clarence Holdren Jr. along with several nieces & nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother William "Mickey" McDowell.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 25, 2002 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating. Inurnment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
The family will receive relatives & friends following the service in the K/D Hall located at St. Johns Church.

Elizabeth "Betty" Jane St. Andrew
MUNISING -- Elizabeth "Betty" Jane St. Andrew, age 80, of 3597 S. Center Highway, Suttons Bay, Michigan and formerly of Munising, died on Wednesday morning, February 20, 2002 at the Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport, Michigan. Betty was born on March 31, 1921 in Traverse City, Michigan to the late Donald and Irene (Hawkins) Wilson. She graduated from Traverse City High School in 1938 and in 1940, she married Victor Wolcott who preceded her in death. Betty was a diet cook at the Traverse City State Hospital, retiring from there in 1973. That same year, she married Lee St. Andrew and they moved to Munising. Lee preceded her in death in 1985 and in 1988, Betty moved to Suttons Bay where she had resided with her special friend, William Weigand.
She is survived by her three daughters- Deanna Galla of Traverse City, MI, Sara (Richard) Baynton of Shallotte, NC, and Geveva (Ernest) King of Munising; seven grandchildren; eleven great- grandchildren; friend and companion, William Weigand of Suttons Bay; special step-daughter and her family- Pat (John) Woodaz of Rumely; and several nieces and nephews. Her thirteen siblings preceded her in death.
At this time there will be no public services. A memorial and intermenty service will be conducted at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising in the spring. Memorials may be made to Munson Home Health and Hospice, 1105 Sixth Street, Traverse City, MI 49684 in memory of Betty.
Lurena Marketty
NILES, IL -- Lurena Marketty passed away February 4, 2002 in Niles, Illinois. She was formerly a long time resident of Ishpeming and has many relatives and friends here.
Lurena was the daughter of Bertha Doney Harris and Edward Trudell, mother of Mayron Gorla, grandmother of Robin Gorla.
Lurena was a graduate of Ishpeming High School and worked as a clerk in the A&P Store for many years.
Funeral services were held at Skaja Terrace Funeral Home in Niles on February 7, 2002. Internment was private.
Mary S. Helsten
ISHPEMING -- Mary S. Helsten, age 53, of 1670 Co.Rd. PPG in Tilden Twp. passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2002 at the U.P. Home Health and Hospice's inpatient unit located in Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming, she had been in ill health since Sept. of 2000.
Mary was born July 27, 1948 in Ishpeming to Lydia S. (Mannikko) and the late Walter Keto. She was a graduate of the National Mine High School, Class of 1966. Mary worked as a custodian at the Wells Fargo Bank (formerly the MFC bank) in Ishpeming since January of 1989. Mary was also a local Avon distributor since 1986, and previously did private home cleaning for many area families.
Mary was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, where she had served as church council president up until this past January. She enjoyed photography, especially doing church and wedding photos, flower gardening, traveling, spending time with her grandchildren, and her pets. In 1951 Mary was National Mine High School's "Pint size Cheerleader."
Mary is survived by her Mother Lydia Keto of National Mine; 4 children- Susan (Thomas) Heikkila of Winnamucca, NV, John Helsten of National Mine, Brad Helsten of National Mine and Carisa (Edward) Homola of National Mine; a special companion Jim Kippola of Ishpeming; a sister Marlene (Claude) Kautz of Champion; 4 brothers- Ralph (Marie) Keto of Ishpeming, Gene (Cathy) Keto of Ishpeming, John (Maryanne) Keto of Ishpeming and David (Brenda) Keto of National Mine; 4 grandchildren- Melissa Heikkila, Thomas Heikkila Jr., Ashley Homola and Ethan Homola; a brother-in-law Dale Helsten of National Mine; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Helsten in 1977; her father Walter Keto; along with her mother-in-law and father-in-law Hazel and William Helsten.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 PM on Monday, February 25, 2002 at the Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. Virginia Eggert to officiate. Inurnment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Rev. John T. Mooe
ROSCOE IL. _ Rev. John T. Moore, of Roscoe passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, in West Allis, i's., from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Born Nov.19, 1917, in Roscoe, son of Frank F. Moore and Claire Runyard. He attended Garrett Seminary being ordained in 1975. Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force as a Major for 21 years with the 46th refueling Squadron at K.l. Sawyer AFB, Gwinn, Michigan. Married Grace Rogers on March 31, 1939, in Dubuque, lowa. He was a Chaplain at the Woodward Governor Company of Loves Park, lilinois and Pastor of the Riverside Community Church from 1980 to 1985. He was a Pastor in the Detroit Conference of Michigan serving in Lake Linden, Painesdale and Iron Mountain and Quinnesec churches. He attended the Roscoe United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Roscoe Masonic Lodge #75 for 53 years, Freeport Consistory, Roscoe Lions Club, Roscoe VFW and American Radio League. He was also active in the local Masonic Lodge, and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol.
Survivors include wife, Grace and 5 sons: Thomas (Bonnie) of Rockford, Richard (Judy) of Rockton, John of Norway, Mi., Dennis of Machesney Park and Jeffrey Moore of Roscoe.16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, a brother Robert Moore of Roscoe and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased in death by two sisters and parents.
Services at 10:30 A.M. Monday, Feb.25, in Roscoe United Methodist Church with Dr. Jay Carr and Dr. Wm. Kerr Sr. offciating. Burial in the Roscoe Cemetery. Visitation from 5-7 P.M. Sunday, Feb. 24, in Delehanty Funeral Home Ltd., 401 River Lane, Loves Park, ll., with Masonic Service at 6:45. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established.
Anna E. Cleary
TRAVERSE CITY -- Anna E. Cleary, Traverse City, MI, died Feb. 8, at Munson Medical Center.
Born on May 18, 1917 to Stanley Elzer & Ethel (Norton) Verdier in Flint, MI she graduated from Mt. Morris High School in 1936, having distinction of being the only member of her family to graduate from high school. She moved to Marquette from the Flint area in 1946. She was an extremely talented seamstress & she held a variety of jobs utilizing that skill. In 1948, she married Robert C. Cleary. They lived in Marquette until retiring to Bayonet Point, Florida in 1981. She moved to Traverse City in 1996. She was preceded death by her husband, parents & several brothers & sisters. She is survived by her son Thomas (Patricia) Maxwell; sister Bettie Daniel; sister-in-law Francis "Sis" Smith; many nieces & nephews. A memorial will be held at a later date in Marquette, MI. Anna G. Jetty
MARQUETTE -- Anna G. Jetty, 94, formerly of 222 S. Fifth Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Friday afternoon, February 22, 2002, at the Norlite Nursing Center following a two year illness. She had resided at Norlite since July 2001.
Anna was born July 10, 1907 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Maurice F. and Margaret (Balmes) Brazil. She was a graduate of the Bishop Baraga High School and was a lifelong Marquette resident. A homemaker, she was a member of the former St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, and currently a member of St. Peter Cathedral. Anna was an avid BINGO participant and was known for her cribbage skills, earning the nickname "Cribbage Champion of Snowberry Heights".
A loving mother and proud grandparent, she is survived by: her daughter, Maureen (Thomas) Curtis of Harvey; three grandchildren, Travis Curtis of Harvey and Roberta (Robert) Doonan and Rhonda (Delbert) Jensen both of Racine, WI; and three great-grandchildren, Sarah and Danielle Doonan, and Jacob Jensen. In addition to her parents, Anna was preceded in death by her husbands, David F. Scanlon in 1958 and Albert Jetty in 1984; and a daughter, Margaret Mary Scanlon.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Monday, February 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in St. Peter Cathedral Monday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Msgr. Louis Cappo, rector, as celebrant. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
Betty Ann Eliason
ISHPEMING -- Betty Ann Eliason, age 74, of 265 Prospect Street, Ishpeming died Saturday, February 23, 2002 at Marquette General Hospital, where she had been a patient for the past 3 days.
Betty was born September 24, 1927 in North Lake to the late John & Emma (Hansen) Carlson. She graduated from Ishpeming High School, Class of 1945.
Betty was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Ishpeming. She enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. Betty also enjoyed spending time at camp, knitting and cooking.
Betty is survived by her husband, whom she married September 11, 1948, Melvin Eliason, a daughter Julie Eliason of Ishpeming, 2 sisters; Marguerite Salmi & June Bjorne, a brother Clyde Carlson, all of Ishpeming, and numerous nieces & nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers Robert & Edward Carlson.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, February 26, 2002 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Cory L. Houseman
ISHPEMING -- Cory L. Houseman, age 4 years 11 months, of 858 N. Pine St., Ishpeming went to be with the Lord, Friday, February 22, 2002 with his family by his side at the Bell Memorial Hospital after an 18 month battle with T-Cell Lymphoma.
Cory was born March 27, 1997 the son of Sheila R. Asgaard and Terry L. Houseman. Cory was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, and also the Thomas the Tank Engine Club of which he may have been the biggest fan there could be, Cory loved trains and always wanted to be a train conductor. His favorite hobbies were playing with trains, buying trains and going to the train station. Cory's dream came true in January when L.S.&I. Railroad allowed him to take a train ride.
Cory loved to watch his brother Dylan race his BMX bike and wearing Dylan's racing shirts while cheering him on by hollering "peddle hard Dylan, peddle hard!" He enjoyed watching movies, his lap-top computer and playing Play Station and Nintendo 64. His very best competition was his Dad, whom he also called "Terry", and his brother Dylan. Mom may add "He could take them on for a good challenge & come out a winner". He loved playing board games with his special cousin Amber and uncle Dick and having his "Auntie Baa" take him shopping, out to lunch, playing play dough or to have her rub his back.
Cory was a very intelligent and very lovable child. He had his very own strong personality since birth, which made him special and very humorous many times. He will be sadly missed not only by his whole family, but by the many peoples lives he touched through all of this.
Survivors include his parents- Sheila Asgaard and Terry Houseman of Ishpeming; a brother Dylan Herron of Ishpeming; paternal grandparents- Frank and Florence "Flossie" Houseman of Ishpeming; paternal great grandmother Viola Langson of Ishpeming; 4 aunts- Denise ("Tuner") Johnson of Ishpeming, Carla (Terry) Herman of Grand Rapids, Diane "Auntie Baa" (Dick) Pitlanich of Ishpeming, and Kathleen (Doug) Wilder of Negaunee; 4 uncles- Ted (Diane) Houseman of Ishpeming, Frank Houseman and Amy Carlson of Ishpeming, Ruben (Nicole) Asgaard of Ishpeming, and Bruce (Sandy) Asgaard of Ishpeming; cousins- Brian Bureau, Ronda and Ryan Johnson, Tanya (Troy) Klunder and Brianna Klunder, Tara Herman, Kerri, Richard Jr. and Amber Cox, Kevin (Carol) Asgaard, Greg and Heather Asgaard, Justin and Stephanie Houseman, April, Brian and Luke Harkins, Craig Asgaard, Danielle Asgaard, Chad (Tara) Asgaard and Ava Asgaard, Ashley and Drake Asgaard; along with his best friends Seth Kramer, Jacob Bossert, Ryan Johnson, Albert "Little Al" Bell, "Auntie Baa" and big brother Dylan.
Cory was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Robert "Mooney" and Emeline "Cubby" Asgaard, his uncle Mike Asgaard, a cousin baby David Ryan Klunder and "Auntie Baa's" dog Pepper.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 PM on Monday, February 25, 2002 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Neil E. Kruschke, Sr.
CHAGRIN FALLS, OHIO -- Neil E. Kruschke, Sr., age 64, passed away at his home in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, of causes related to leukemia.
He was born April 29, 1937 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Chester and Hellen Kruschke. He graduated from Whitefish Bay High School and earned a Business degree from Arizona State University. He was president of Stopol, Inc & SBS, Inc, retiring in 1998. He was also Chairman of Thermoline from 1997 until the time of his death. He was a member of the Society of Plastic Engineers and Ducks Unlimited. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and enjoying the great outdoors.
Survivors include his wife Nancy (Hausch) Kruschke, whom he married at St. Bernards Church in Wauwatosa, WI on August 29, 1959; children, Carol L. Kruschke, Neil E. Kruschke, Jr., and Donald A. Kruschke; grandchildren, Berkley A. Kruschke, Cole E. Kruschke and Lucas A. Kruschke; and sister Jeanne Barnes. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 siblings, Sony and Carol Lee.
A memorial service will be held Monday, February 25, 2002 at St. Joan of Arc Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio at 11:00 AM.

Patricia J. Bingham
PORTLAND, OREGON -- Patricia J. Bingham, formerly of Ishpeming, died February 17, 2002, in Portland, Oregon, of causes related to Parkinson's disease. She was 83. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 00 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 650 A Street in Lake Oswego.
Mrs. Bingham was born March 17, 1918 in Iron Mountain, Michigan to Michael J. and Mary Ryan. She graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1935. She married George Bingham, a civil engineer, in Portland on June 5, 1943.
George's work took them to Montreal and to several states, including Massachusetts, where their son Hugh was born. They spent six years in Greece on assignment for the Marshall Plan. At a reception held by US Ambassador Puerifoy. Pat's question to Queen Frederika led to the relaxation of Greek adoption laws. Their daughter, Mary, returned with them to New Jersey in 1956. Pat was active in social work, worked with a publisher of religious textbooks, and was Ho-Ho-Kus correspondent for the Ridgewood, N.J. newspaper.
They returned to Portland when George became Chief Engineer for BPA. Pat was on the organizing committee for the Lake Oswego Adult Center and was active in the Multnomah and Clackamas County chapters of the National Alliance for the Mentally lll. In Portland she was a member of the Third Order at Holy Rosary Church and in Lake Oswego a member of Our Lady of the Lake parish. She enjoyed rug hooking, skiing, and dancing, and was an accomplished cook of Greek and Chinese specialties.
She is survived by sisters Frances Burdette and Gaeney Pellow of South Bend, Indiana, and brother Michael J. Ryan Jr. of Sullivan, Missouri, by George and Mary in Portland, and by Hugh and her grandchildren Tai and Nolan in Denver, Colorado.
Her ashes will be interred at the family plot in Ishpeming with a memorial service to be scheduled in July.

Elaine Ericson
MARQUETTE -- Elaine Ericson, 79, of 1612 Woodland Ave., died Sunday, Febnuary 24, 2002 at the Norlite Nursing Center where she had been a resident since October 2001.
She was born April 6, 1922 in Marquette to William and Sarah (Harris) Jacobs and had lived in this area her entire life. She was a graduate of Graveraet High School and a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Elaine enjoyed being a homemaker, doing crafts, and spending time at the camp on Arfelin Lake fishing and being with her husband and family.
Survivors include her husband Milton, to whom she had been married for 50 years, a daughter Sharon (Patrick) Fluette, a son Steven (Cynthia) Ericson, and a sister Pearl (Joseph) Turenne, all of Marquette, a brother-in-law Donald (Laura) Ericson of New Jersey, five grandchildren; Garret and Adam Guidebeck, Brandie and Amber Ericson and Brian Fluette, three great grandchildren; Cooper, Tabitha and Carter Guidebeck, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday, Feburay 26, 2002 in the Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Nancy Amacher and Rev. Tim Bernard officiating. Visitation will begin at the church at 4:00 PM on Tuesday. Burial will take place in Park Cemetery. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Ailie E. Mackey
HUMBOLDT -- Ailie E. Mackey, age 80 formerly of 3495 Co. Rd. FD Humboldt Twp., passed away Sunday, February 24, 2002 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming, where she had resided for the past 2 years.
Ailie was born December 15, 1921 in Republic to the late John & Ida (Kossi) Heliste. She was a life long area resident. Ailie enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading & knitting.
Ailie is survived by 4 daughters: Kathlyn (Glenn) LaCosse of Traverse City, MI, Audrey (Marvin) Ruspakka of Champion, Cheryl (Kenneth) Dionne of Champion and Peggy (Darryl) Koschtial of Taylor, MI, 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. Ailie was preceded in death by her husband Matt Mackey Jr. in 1998, a granddaughter Susan Frazer in 1999, 2 brothers- Arthur and Dauno Heliste and 4 sisters- Helen Willis, Agda Metzger, Tyyne Raisanen and Aune Mattson.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. D. Michael Carriere officiating. Burial will be in the Humboldt Twp. Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 11:00 AM until the time of services on Wednesday.

Bruce H. Clark
IRON RIVER Bruce H. Clark, age 90, of Marquette, and formerly of Iron River, died Saturday (Feb. 23) at the Norlite Nursing Home in Marquette.
He was born March 30, 1911 in Lapeer, Michigan, the son of the lat Herbert H. and Lenore (Ermo) Clark. He grew up and lived with his family in Minnesota and Iron River, moved from Iron River and for the past 60 years had made his home in Marquette.
He worked for the Cliffs Dow Company in Marquette until they closed and was then employed in maintenance at Northern Michigan University until his retirement.
In addtion to his parents, he was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, Earl, Donald, and Manley Clark, and by 3 sisters, Violet Cassagranda, Hazel Molley, and Virginia Bruder.
He is survived by 2 brothers, Hugh (Irene) Clark of Lander, Wyoming, Chester (Joan) Clark of Carlsbad, Wyoming, 4 sisters, Gladys King of Iron River, Mae Watson of Grand Haven, Michigan, Joyce (Don) Parolari of Frankenmuth, Michigan, Vivian (Virgil) Branyan of Muskegon, Michigan. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
