Corinne B. Hooper
NEGAUNEE -- Corinne B. Hooper, age 92, of 724 Baldwin Ave., Negaunee, died at 11:00pm on Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at the Eastwood Nursing Center where she had been a patient for nearly one year.
Corinne was born March 5, 1909 in Marquette to Adelord and Ida (DuBois) Bertrand and was a Negaunee resident since 1941. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee and the Daughters of Isabella. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are one son, Roger Hooper of Barnett, WI; one daughter, Janice Askeland of Olathe, KS; three step-daughters, Ruby Minelli of Gwinn, Elwell (Clarence) Rasmussen of Negaunee and Elaine Kaiser of Valencia, CA; one step-son, Jack (Kathy) Hooper of Valrico, FL; two sisters, Jeanette Bertrand and Betty Sandstrom, both of Marquette; 16 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren;and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hooper in 1987.
Private funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Saturday at the Koskey Funeral Home. Rev. John J. Shiverski, pastor of the St. Paul Catholic Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Eastwood Nursing Center Activity Fund in Mrs. Hooper's Memory.
Donald M. Windsand
ISHPEMING - Donald M.Windsand, age 94, a life long Ishpeming resident, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2002 at the Mather Nursing Center where he had been a resident for several years.
Donald was born July 1, 1907 in Ishpeming to the late Ditlef and Karen (Johnson) Windsand. Donald was a self-employed auto mechanic, owner of the former Windsand Garage, which was located on U.S. Hwy 41 in Ishpeming.
Donald was a former member of the Masons, he attended Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of the Steelworkers Union, Local 8. He enjoyed working on cars, especially Oldsmobile Eighty Eights.
Donald is survived by four children, Barbara (George) Duhame of Ishpeming, Patricia Hakala of Ishpeming, Betty (Evert) Koskinen of Florissant, CO and Rose (Jerry) Wierzbicki of Green Valley, AZ; two brothers, Raymond (Dorothy) Windsand of Ishpeming and Edgar Windsand of TX and Delvin Huhta at home; one daughter, Corey Huhta at home; mother, Gertrude Makela of Chassell; four brothers, Michael (Lynne) Cadeau of Baraga, Joseph (Linda) Cadeau of Ishpeming, Phillip (Joy) Cadeau of Alston and Pastor Erick (Jaime) Makela of Houghton; four sisters, Jan Mattson of Leander, Tennessee and Marilyn Clough of Virginia; six grandchildren, Kristin (Luke) Anderson of Marquette, Candice Ilves of Champion, Suzanne and Stacey Sobotka, both of Sterling Heights, and Christine and Eric (Kimberly) Johnson of Anchorage, AK; two great grandchildren, Connor John Anderson of Marquette and Victoria Johnson of Anchorage; and numerous nieces and nephews. Patricia was preceded in death by her husband, Miles Johnson in 1990 and two brothers, John and Leo LaPointe.
There will be no services. Inurnment will take place in the Champion Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
William N. Deibert
MUNISING -- William N. Deibert, 82, of 825 W. Munising Ave., died Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at Munising Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since February 8, 2002.
He was born July 26, 1919 in Munising to William and Blanche (Pope) Deibert and was a life long resident. He was a veteran of World War II and was employed by the Munising Paper Mill prior to his retirement.
William is survived by a daughter, Ethel (Eston) Allison of Nixa, MO; a son, Richard of Florida. Jack married Velma Williams in 1996. He enjoyed the outdoors and listening to music.
Jack is survived by his wife, Velma of Florida; his brother, Jerry (Annette) Elmblad of Marquette; a step-brother, Ray (Amy) Elmblad, Jr. of Ann Arbor; his sister, Nancy (Roger) Johnson of Marquette; step-sisters, Luann and Susie. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his father in 1981, his son Rick in 1991, his grandson Jerry Lee and his step-father, Ray Elmblad.
Funeral services for Mr. Drew will be held at 7:00pm Tuesday, March 5, 2002 from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Pastor Margaret Grant officiating. Interment will take place in the Spring. The family will receive friends Tuesday at the funeral chapel from 6:00pm until the time of service. The Baraga County Area Veterans under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 will conduct military honors at 6:45pm, Tuesday. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse.
Marilyn Y. Hillier
MUNISING -- Marilyn Y. Hillier, age 66, of E9383 E. Munising Avenue, Munising, died surrounded by her family on Friday, March 1, 2002 at her home. She was born the daughter of Henry and Elsie (Treves) Mayhew in Marquette, Michigan Bell Telephone Company in Marquette. She married Richard Miles Hillier on February 5, 1955 and made their home in Munising in 1956.
Marilyn was a homemaker and mother of five children. She began employment in 1974 at the Peoples State Bank of Munising. Marilyn worked for twenty-nine years in various capacities throughout her career, finishing her career in the loan department until unable. Marilyn loved to sing, and was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church choir, Munising Vandardettes and the community choir. Marilyn and Janet Lezotte co-directed the USO shows for the American Legion Club, best remembered as one of the Andrews Sisters. She also organized and directed for twenty-eight years, the annual children's Fourth of July Pet Parade. Other activities Marilyn enjoyed were bowling, playing cards, campfires, sun bathing and Friday nights with family and friends, not to mention, Sundays cheering for the Packers.
Marilyn is survived by her husband of forty-seven years, Richard; their five children, Jean (Jim) Cox of Redford, MI, Jim (Debi) Hillier of Pulaski, WI, Joe Hillier of Munising, John (Amy) Hillier of Altamont Springs, FL and Jay (Stacie) Hillier of Marquette; nine grandchildren, Jason Cox, Beau, Anthony and Emily Hillier, Josie Hillier, Liza and Cal Hillier and Alex and Abbie Hillier; her mother, Elsie Mayhew; her brothers, Henry (Beverly) Mayhew of Marquette, Mike (Kathy) Mayhew of East Lansing, MI and Peter (Cheryl) Mayhew of Menominee, MI; her sisters, Millie (Bob) Hanson of Marquette and Barbara Mayhew of Arlington, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marilyn was preceded in death by her father, Henry George Mayhew in 1961.
Friends may visit at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 8:00pm. A Memorial Mass will be conducted by Father Dennis L. Borca on Monday, March 4, 2002 at 4:00pm. Interment will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette. Memorials in memory of Marilyn may be made to the MGH Cancer Center, 420 W. Beatrice J. Patenaude
MARQUETTE -- Beatrice J. Patenaude, 92. of 285 Lake Shore Blvd., Marquette, died at 1:05 a.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002 at the Norlite Nursing Center where she had been, a patient a short while.
Mrs. Patenaude was born on May 3, 1909 in Marquette to the late Fred and Josephine (Morneau) LaLonde and was a lifelong city resident. She was formerly employed at the Huron Mountain Club for many years and in her free time she enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
Beatrice was a member of the former St John's Catholic Church in Marquette.
She is survrived by one daughter, Janith Frazier of Marquette; one sister, Evelyn White of Ocala, Fl, also 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Buster Cardinal in 1952, her second husband, Edmund F. Patenaude in l969; a daughter, Dolores Katalinich; three sisters, Gladys Banach, Blanche Nault and Mabel Henne; also two brothers, Howard and Jack LaLonde.
Private funeral services for family and close friends will be held on Wednesday in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home with the Rev. Shaun Erno officiating. Entombment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum. There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Trombley was born on September 30, 1917 in Marquette to the late William and Alice (McCarthy) Clulo. On December 27, 1941 she married her late husband, Edward Trombley at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette.
Jean was a former Brownie troop leader, Cub Scout leader, and was an original founder and past president of the Marquette County Humane Society.
She worked for several years as assistant to the children's librarian at the Peter White Public Library. Jean was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church as well as its altar society.
Survivors include one son, Michael Trombley of Xenia, OH and Carol Jean Amross of Erie, PA; also surviving are four grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Prededing her in death besides her parents was her husband, Edward Trombley on October 16, 1998; one son, John Trombley in 1946; also seven sisters and three brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. Shaun Erno officiating. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Lawrence E. "Jello" Mantyla
NEGAUNEE -- Lawrence E. "Jello" Mantyla, 80, of 620 Everett St., Apt. #25 Negaunee, died Monday, March 4, 2002 at his home under the loving care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice after a lengty illness. Arrangements will be announced by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Robert G Ruecker
ORLANDO, FLORIDA -- Robert G. Ruecker, 84, formerly of l02 E. Magnetic Street, Marquette, died at 12:10 a.m. February 27, 2002 at Colonial Lakes Health Care in Orlando, Michigan Retired Employees Association,
Hc served his country during World War II from 1942 to 1946 in the 81st /322nd Infantry Combat Division in the Philippine Islands and Anguar Island. He was in the first troops to occupy Hirosaki, Japan. He held several ranks including 1st Sargent. Robert received the American Theater Service Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and one Bronze Arrowhead.
He was employed at Cliffs Dow Chemical Company from 1939 to 1968 as a traffic manager and was also employed by the State of Florida after retiring. He enjoyed being outdoors and his hobbies included gardening and spending time at his father's cottage. Robert and Marie would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year.
The famil will greet relatives and friends at the Canale Tonella Funeral Home on Thursday March 7th from 4-8pm where a parish prayer service will be conducted at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday March 8th at 12 noon in St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. John E. Patrick officiating. Entombment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum.
Elizabeth "Betty" Penglase Levine
ISHPEMING -- Elizabeth "Betty" Penglase Levine, age 90, a former long-time Ishpeming resident, passed away at Henry Ford Continuing Care Center in Roseville, Illinois in 1932. She was a member of United Presbyterian Church of Ishpeming.
She is survived by daughters Mary Beth (Peter) Sola, of Columbia, Maryland, Carol (Dominic) Sarvello, of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan
Maurice Sam Warshawsky
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Maurice Sam Warshawsky, 81, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2002 at Garden Terrace. Funeral services will be 1:30pm Tuesday, March 5, at The Louis Memorial Chapel. Burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers, family suggests contributions to the Michael Ross Memorial Foundation, 636 N.E. Lake Pointe Dr., Lee's Summit, MO 64064.
Mr. Warshawsky was Chairman of the Board of 3 companies: Ishpeming Steel Corp, American Compressed Steel Corporation and Secondary Resources, Inc. He was a member of Congregation Beth Torah, Rotary International, Masons, Shriners and the Elks Club.
Mr. Warshawsky was a former Member of the Board of Directors of Miners First National Bank of Ishpeming, MI. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. Mr. Warshawsky was born in Crystal Falls, MI.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Florence Warshawsky, of the home; his children: Arnold and Susan Warshawsky, Prairie Village, KS; Margie Warshawsky; David Warshawsky; Annette and Scott Marietti, all of Ishpeming, MI; Jeff and Gail Ross, Leawood, KS; Allan and Mary Lou Ross, St. Joseph, MO; Anthony and Kathy Ross, Lee's Summit, MO; 16 grandchildren.
