Corinne B. Hooper
NEGAUNEE -- Corinne B. Hooper, age 92, of 724 Baldwin Ave., Negaunee, died at 11:00pm on Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at the Eastwood Nursing Center where she had been a patient for nearly one year.
Corinne was born March 5, 1909 in Marquette to Adelord and Ida (DuBois) Bertrand and was a Negaunee resident since 1941. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee and the Daughters of Isabella. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are one son, Roger Hooper of Barnett, WI; one daughter, Janice Askeland of Olathe, KS; three step-daughters, Ruby Minelli of Gwinn, Elwell (Clarence) Rasmussen of Negaunee and Elaine Kaiser of Valencia, CA; one step-son, Jack (Kathy) Hooper of Valrico, FL; two sisters, Jeanette Bertrand and Betty Sandstrom, both of Marquette; 16 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren;and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hooper in 1987.
Private funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Saturday at the Koskey Funeral Home. Rev. John J. Shiverski, pastor of the St. Paul Catholic Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Eastwood Nursing Center Activity Fund in Mrs. Hooper's Memory.
Donald M. Windsand
ISHPEMING - Donald M.Windsand, age 94, a life long Ishpeming resident, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2002 at the Mather Nursing Center where he had been a resident for several years.
Donald was born July 1, 1907 in Ishpeming to the late Ditlef and Karen (Johnson) Windsand. Donald was a self-employed auto mechanic, owner of the former Windsand Garage, which was located on U.S. Hwy 41 in Ishpeming.
Donald was a former member of the Masons, he attended Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of the Steelworkers Union, Local 8. He enjoyed working on cars, especially Oldsmobile Eighty Eights.
Donald is survived by four children, Barbara (George) Duhame of Ishpeming, Patricia Hakala of Ishpeming, Betty (Evert) Koskinen of Florissant, CO and Rose (Jerry) Wierzbicki of Green Valley, AZ; two brothers, Raymond (Dorothy) Windsand of Ishpeming and Edgar Windsand of Washington; two sisters, Ruth (Walfred) Helberg of Marquette and Marie (Harold) Herlich of Marquette; 16 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Donald was predeceased by his wife, Ruth; sisters, Edel Windsand, Eleanor Baird and Jeanette Koski; and brothers, George and William Windsand.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, March 2, 2002 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Dirks officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Kathryn M. Huhta
ALSTON -- Kathryn M. Huhta, age 44, of Alston, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital. She was born October 16, 1957 in L'Anse, daughter of Adolphus Cadeau and Gertrude (Byykkonen) Makela. Kathy graduated from L'Anse High School in 1975, and received an Associate Degree in Medical Transcripts from Suomi College. She was married to Jeffrey Francois for five years. Kathy worked at White Pine Mine as a driller/ blaster for three years, then worked at Baraga County Memorial Hospital doing medical transcriptions for about a year. She married Michael Huhta on May 16, 1987 in Alston. They owned and operated Ruff Nuff Lumber Co. where she worked for the past 15 years.
Kathy was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church. She enjoyed raising her children and grandchildren, music, knitting and crocheting.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Huhta of Alston; four sons, Dana (Crystal) Francois of Nisula, Jeromy (Kasie) Francois of Pelkie, Jessie Francois of Shepard Air Force Base, TX and Delvin Huhta at home; one daughter, Corey Huhta at home; mother, Gertrude Makela of Chassell; four brothers, Michael (Lynne) Cadeau of Baraga, Joseph (Linda) Cadeau of Ishpeming, Phillip (Joy) Cadeau of Alston and Pastor Erick (Jaime) Makela of Houghton; four sisters, Jan Mattson of Leander, TX, Lisa Makela of Omaruru, Namibia, Africa, Sarah (Mark) Hiltunen of Pelkie and Margie Makela of Pelkie; three grandchildren, Alexis Francois, Victoria and Seth Francois; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Kathy is preceded in death by her father, Adolphus Cadeau on November 30, 1957.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 3 at 2:00pm at Mission United Lutheran Church. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
Florence M. Martinac
L'ANSE -- Florence M. Martinac, 84, of L'Anse, passed away Wednesday evening, February 27, 2002 at Bayside Medical Village in L'Anse. She was born in Remer, MN on May 11, 1917, the daughter of the late John B. and Marie E. (Parnette) Boyer. Florence attended L'Anse High School and graduated in 1935. In 1938, she married Peter J. Martinac. He preceded her in death in 1978. She was a lifetime area resident. Florence was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in L'Anse. She loved being with her family and enjoyed the company of her friends. Mrs. Martinac was the Green Hill Manor's first resident.
Mrs. Martinac is survived by four sons, Peter (Vicki) of L'Anse, Paul (Lillian) of Chassell, John (Diane) of Grand Rapids and George (Jean Marie) of Orlando, FL; four daughters, Judith (Lloyd) Moughler of Clio, Mary Lou (Bob) Dudo of L'Anse, Katherine (David) Camp of Houghton Lake and Barbara (Neal) McKinney of Kalkaska, MI; daughter-in-law, Kay Martinac of L'Anse; 21 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; sister, Mildred Almli of Allen Park, MI; brother-in-law, Albert Mihelich of Allen Park, MI; sister-in-law, Gertrude Boyer of L'Anse; and her special friend, Oscar Johnson. She was preceded in death by her son Dennis in 2000; a brother, Arthur Boyer; and a sister, Frances.
Funeral services for Mrs. Martinac will be held at 11:00am Monday, March 4, 2002 from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse. Father Greg Heikkala will officiate. Interment will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery, L'Anse. The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel Monday from 10:00am until the time of service. Patricia Florence Johnson
CHAMPION - Patricia Florence Johnson, age 81, former Champion resident, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at the Mather Nursing Center where she had resided for the past 1 1/2 years.
Patricia was born March 17, 1920 in Ishpeming to the late John and Emma (Tousignant) LaPointe. She graduated from Ishpeming High School, Class of 1939. Patricia and her family moved to Detroit for a period of 25 years, then to Owosso in 1965 and returned to the Ishpeming area in 1973. Patricia was a caregiver for her family and a devoted grandmother.
Patricia is survived by four children, Marcia (Arvid) Ilves of Champion, Marjorie (Stanley) Sobotka of Sterling Heights, MI, Jon (Barbara) Johnson of Anchorage, AK and Marylu Johnson of Southgate, MI; two sisters, Priscilla Norman of Tennessee and Marilyn Clough of Virginia; six grandchildren, Kristin (Luke) Anderson of Marquette, Candice Ilves of Champion, Suzanne and Stacey Sobotka, both of Sterling Heights, and Christine and Eric (Kimberly) Johnson of Anchorage, AK; two great grandchildren, Connor John Anderson of Marquette and Victoria Johnson of Anchorage; and numerous nieces and nephews. Patricia was preceded in death by her husband, Miles Johnson in 1990 and two brothers, John and Leo LaPointe.
There will be no services. Inurnment will take place in the Champion Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
William N. Deibert
MUNISING -- William N. Deibert, 82, of 825 W. Munising Ave., died Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at Munising Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since February 8, 2002.
He was born July 26, 1919 in Munising to William and Blanche (Pope) Deibert and was a life long resident. He was a veteran of World War II and was employed by the Munising Paper Mill prior to his retirement.
William is survived by a daughter, Ethel (Eston) Allison of Nixa, MO; a son, Richard of New York, NY; and two grandchildren, Erik and Greg Allison. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Alice Stickney, and a son, Charles.
There are no services planned at this time. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is assisting the family.
John M. "Jack" Drew
WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- John M. "Jack" Drew, age 52, former L'Anse resident, passed away suddenly February 28, 2002 in West Palm Beach, FL. He was born in Hancock, MI on April 9, 1949, son of John A. and Patricia (McKindles) Drew. Jack attended L'Anse School and graduated in 1967. He served in the U.S. Army with the rank of sergeant and was a decorated Vietnam conflict veteran. In addition to receiving the Oakleaf Cluster award, he was the recipient of several service commendations. He was employed as a commercial electrician in Florida. Jack married Velma Williams in 1996. He enjoyed the outdoors and listening to music.
Jack is survived by his wife, Velma of Florida; his daughter, Gretchen (Todd) Schneider of L'Anse; two grandchildren, Toby Niemi and Lauryn Schneider of L'Anse; his mother, Patricia of Florida; his brother, Jerry (Annette) Elmblad of Marquette; a step-brother, Ray (Amy) Elmblad, Jr. of Ann Arbor; his sister, Nancy (Roger) Johnson of Marquette; step-sisters, Luann and Susie. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his father in 1981, his son Rick in 1991, his grandson Jerry Lee and his step-father, Ray Elmblad.
Funeral services for Mr. Drew will be held at 7:00pm Tuesday, March 5, 2002 from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Pastor Margaret Grant officiating. Interment will take place in the Spring. The family will receive friends Tuesday at the funeral chapel from 6:00pm until the time of service. The Baraga County Area Veterans under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 will conduct military honors at 6:45pm, Tuesday. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse.
Marilyn Y. Hillier
MUNISING -- Marilyn Y. Hillier, age 66, of E9383 E. Munising Avenue, Munising, died surrounded by her family on Friday, March 1, 2002 at her home. She was born the daughter of Henry and Elsie (Treves) Mayhew in Marquette, Michigan on March 19, 1935. She graduated from Marquette High School in 1952 and began work at Michigan Bell Telephone Company in Marquette. She married Richard Miles Hillier on February 5, 1955 and made their home in Munising in 1956.
Marilyn was a homemaker and mother of five children. She began employment in 1974 at the Peoples State Bank of Munising. Marilyn worked for twenty-nine years in various capacities throughout her career, finishing her career in the loan department until unable. Marilyn loved to sing, and was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church choir, Munising Vandardettes and the community choir. Marilyn and Janet Lezotte co-directed the USO shows for the American Legion Club, best remembered as one of the Andrews Sisters. She also organized and directed for twenty-eight years, the annual children's Fourth of July Pet Parade. Other activities Marilyn enjoyed were bowling, playing cards, campfires, sun bathing and Friday nights with family and friends, not to mention, Sundays cheering for the Packers.
Marilyn is survived by her husband of forty-seven years, Richard; their five children, Jean (Jim) Cox of Redford, MI, Jim (Debi) Hillier of Pulaski, WI, Joe Hillier of Munising, John (Amy) Hillier of Altamont Springs, FL and Jay (Stacie) Hillier of Marquette; nine grandchildren, Jason Cox, Beau, Anthony and Emily Hillier, Josie Hillier, Liza and Cal Hillier and Alex and Abbie Hillier; her mother, Elsie Mayhew; her brothers, Henry (Beverly) Mayhew of Marquette, Mike (Kathy) Mayhew of East Lansing, MI and Peter (Cheryl) Mayhew of Menominee, MI; her sisters, Millie (Bob) Hanson of Marquette and Barbara Mayhew of Arlington, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marilyn was preceded in death by her father, Henry George Mayhew in 1961.

Beatrice J. Patenaude
MARQUETTE -- Beatrice J. Patenaude, 92. of 285 Lake Shore Blvd., Marquette, died at 1:05 a.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002 at the Norlite Nursing Center where she had been, a patient a short while.
Mrs. Patenaude was born on May 3, 1909 in Marquette to the late Fred and Josephine (Morneau) LaLonde and was a lifelong city resident. She was formerly employed at the Huron Mountain Club for many years and in her free time she enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
Beatrice was a member of the former St John's Catholic Church in Marquette.
She is survrived by one daughter, Janith Frazier of Marquette; one sister, Evelyn White of Ocala, Fl, also 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Buster Cardinal in 1952, her second husband, Edmund F. Patenaude in l969; a daughter, Dolores Katalinich; three sisters, Gladys Banach, Blanche Nault and Mabel Henne; also two brothers, Howard and Jack LaLonde.
Private funeral services for family and close friends will be held on Wednesday in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home with the Rev. Shaun Erno officiating. Entombment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum. There will be no visitation.

Jean Trombley
DAYTON, OHIO -- Jean Elizabeth Clulo Trombley, 84 formerly of 156 W. Park Street, Marquette, died early Friday morning March 1, 2002 at the Hospice of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio.
Mrs. Trombley was born on September 30, 1917 in Marquette to the late William and Alice (McCarthy) Clulo. On December 27, 1941 she married her late husband, Edward Trombley at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette.
Jean was a former Brownie troop leader, Cub Scout leader, and was an original founder and past president of the Marquette County Humane Society.
She worked for several years as assistant to the children's librarian at the Peter White Public Library. Jean was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church as well as its altar society.
Survivors include one son, Michael Trombley of Xenia, OH; two daughters, Margaret Lynn (Gregory) Wilson of Pickerington, OH and Carol Jean Amross of Erie, PA; also surviving are four grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Prededing her in death besides her parents was her husband, Edward Trombley on October 16, 1998; one son, John Trombley in 1946; also seven sisters and three brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. Shaun Erno officiating. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Robert G Ruecker
ORLANDO, FLORIDA -- Robert G. Ruecker, 84, formerly of l02 E. Magnetic Street, Marquette, died at 12:10 a.m. February 27, 2002 at Colonial Lakes Health Care in Orlando, Florida.
Robert was born on December 20, 1917, in Marquette, the son of Otto and Josephine (O'Leary) Ruecker. He is survived by his wife, Marie (Gravelle) Ruecker of Orlando, FL, son, James (Julie) Ruecker, Encinitas, CA, daughter Shirley (Gary) Sacheck of Little Rock AR, son Michael (Lisa) Ruecker, Orlando, FL., nine grandchildren. Steven Ruecker of Los Angeles, CA, David, and Suzanne Ruecker, Encinitas, CA, Jennifer and Amy Sacheck, Somerville, MA, Sam Sacheck, Norman OK and Matthew, Chelsy, and Marcus Ruecker of Orlando. Also Surviving are brother Patrick (Joan) Ruecker of Marquette and a sister, Lucille (Carrol) Asp of Nonway, MI. Other survivors include several nieces, nephews and a dear niece, Carol Leisner (Thibodeau), Escanaba, Ml.
Robert was a member of several organizations including Life Member status of Marquette Elks Lodge #405, past president of the Lions Club, Eagles, American Legion, St. Michael's Men's Club where he ushered 25 years, Marquette Range Engineer's
Club, Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the State of Michigan Retired Employees Association,
Hc served his country during World War II from 1942 to 1946 in the 81st /322nd Infantry Combat Division in the Philippine Islands and Anguar Island. He was in the first troops to occupy Hirosaki, Japan. He held several ranks including 1st Sargent. Robert received the American Theater Service Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and one Bronze Arrowhead.
He was employed at Cliffs Dow Chemical Company from 1939 to 1968 as a traffic manager and was also employed by the State of Michigan Department of Corrections as an accountant and business manager from 1968 to 1983 at which time he retired.
Robert and his wife loved to travel and spent winters in Florida after retiring. He enjoyed being outdoors and his hobbies included gardening and spending time at his father's cottage. Robert and Marie would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year.
The famil will greet relatives and friends at the Canale Tonella Funeral Home on Thursday March 7th from 4-8pm where a parish prayer service will be conducted at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday March 8th at 12 noon in St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. John E. Patrick officiating. Entombment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum.
Elizabeth "Betty" Penglase Levine
ISHPEMING -- Elizabeth "Betty" Penglase Levine, age 90, a former long-time Ishpeming resident, passed away at Henry Ford Continuing Care Center in Roseville, Michigan, on Sunday, March 3, 2002, where she had been a patient since October of 2000.
Betty was born April 26, 1911 in Ishpeming to John & Carrie (Dennis) Penglase, graduated from Ishpeming High School, Class of 1928 and from National College of Education, Evanston, Illinois in 1932. She was a member of United Presbyterian Church of Ishpeming.
She is survived by daughters Mary Beth (Peter) Sola, of Columbia, Maryland, Carol (Dominic) Sarvello, of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, grandchildren; Elizabeth (Renato) Jamett, David (Kimberly) Sarvello, Christopher (Anne) Sola, and Rachel (Brian) Kubine, great grandchildren; Dominic & Mallory Jamett, Max & Olivia Sarvello, Julia Sola, several nieces & nephews. On February 23, 1940 she married Donald J. Levine who preceded her in death in 1973. She was also preceded in death by brothers William & John Penglase, and sisters Mary Penglase & Phyllis Olds.

Lawrence E. "Jello" Mantyla
NEGAUNEE - Lawrence E. "Jello" Mantyla, age 80, of 620 Everett St., Apt. #25, Negaunee, died Monday, March 4, 2002 at his home under the loving care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice after a lengthy illness.
Lawrence was born September 12, 1921 in Ishpeming to the late Charles and Hannah (Salo) Mantyla. He attended the Ishpeming Public Schools and later served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. He worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. first as an underground miner at the Maas Mine and then as a heavy equipment operator at the Empire Mine, and retired in 1983 from the Tilden Mine with over 34 years with the company.
"Jello" was a lifelong area resident and a member of Bethel Lutheran Church. He was an avid baseball player in his younger years. He enjoyed deer hunting and socializing and having coffee with his friends.
Lawrence is survived by his wife of 53 years, Laina of Negaunee; three sons, Larry (Beverly) Mantyla of Marquette, Greg (Mary) Mantyla of Gwinn and Alan Mantyla of Ishpeming; three daughters, Nancy (John) O'Neill of Ishpeming, Sharon (Edwin) Villeneuve of Ishpeming and Susan (Ron) Reynolds of Ishpeming; a brother, Anselm "Unka" Mantyla of Ishpeming; ten grandchildren- Stephanie, Zachary and Rachel Mantyla, Cory Eman, William Eman, Jr., Jennie Villeneuve and Jocelyn Atkinson, Jacqueline and Andrea Reynolds and Shane Marietti; a step-granddaughter, Amy Jenkins; and a step-great granddaughter, Aubree Jenkins; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Armas, Hannes, Wilho and Waino Mantyla; three sisters, Elma Bessolo, Miriam Gravedoni and Melvia Mantyla; and two half-brothers, Charles and Alex Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 1 until 3pm on Wednesday.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph Bietala, Ken Oja, Glenn Bjork, Joe Perrault, Jim Lawson and Coy Hill.

A luncheon will follow the service at the Bethel Lutheran Church.
Mary Blomquist
LANTANA, FL -- Mary Blomquist of Lantana, FL, passed away February 28, 2002. She was born April 24, 1912 in Negaunee, MI and was formerly of Gwinn, MI.
She is survived by her son, Ray Blomquist of Lantana, 8 grandchilden, 9 great grandchildren and great 1 grandchild. Also surviving are one brother Gordon Vercoe of Ishpeming, along with 3 nieces and 2 nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Ray H. Blomquist and daughter, Joyce Wells.
Burial will take place in the spring, at Gwinn, Michigan

Mr. Warshawsky was Chairman of the Board of 3 companies: Ishpeming Steel Corp, American Compressed Steel Corporation and Secondary Resources, Inc. He was a member of Congregation Beth Torah, Rotary International, Masons, Shriners and the Elks Club.
Mr. Warshawsky was a former Member of the Board of Directors of Miners First National Bank of Ishpeming, MI. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. Mr. Warshawsky was born in Crystal Falls, MI.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Florence Warshawsky, of the home; his children: Arnold and Susan Warshawsky, Prairie Village, KS; Margie Warshawsky; David Warshawsky; Annette and Scott Marietti, all of Ishpeming, MI; Jeff and Gail Ross, Leawood, KS; Allan and Mary Lou Ross, St. Joseph, MO; Anthony and Kathy Ross, Lee's Summit, MO; 16 grandchildren.
