Donald L. Ranta
ISHPEMING TWP. - Donald L. Ranta, age 67 of 305 Seilo Ave., Ishpeming passed away, Monday March 4, 2002 at the Mather Nursing Home where he had been a resident for the past 3 week.
Don was born in Negaunee on February 18, 1935. He graduated from Negaunee High School, class of 1953 and served in the U.S. Marines from 1954-1957.
Don worked for WLUC TV6 for 14 years at various positions and worked as a maintenance man for 16 years at U.P. Generating where he retired from in 1994. Don was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Negaunee, the Ishpeming Elks Lodge #447. He enjoyed reading and in his younger years enjoyed playing city league basketball.
Don is survived by his wife of 41 years Donna (Roberts) Ranta of Ishpeming, 3 sisters Gloria Cook of Glen Burnie, MD, Phyllis (Michael) Schaltz of Ports Mouth, RI and Janet (Gary) Kendall of West Carrolton, OH, and aunt Pearl Hahka of Negaunee, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a brother in law & sister in law Keith & Linda Roberts of Champion. Don was preceded in death by his mother & step father Ida & Lawrence Garceau.
Funeral services will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev Christine Thomas-Echelbarger to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4:00-7:00p.m. on Thursday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home where an Elks memorial service will be held at 6:15p.m.
Elenora "Ellie" M. Dahlberg
SKANEE -- Elenora "Ellie" M. Dahlberg, age 93, of Skanee, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital skilled nurse unit.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 7 at 2:00pm at Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. HULBERT -- Gordon E. Planck, 74, of Hulbert, died suddenly Monday evening March 4, 2002 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry. Funeral services will be held Saturday March 9, 2002 at 11:00 am at the Hulbert United Methodist Church in Hulbert with Pastor Audrey Dunlap officiating. Jean C. Almli
L'ANSE -- Jean C. Almli, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2002 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital. She was born August 4, 1922 in Ripley, MI daughter to the late Charles and Agatha (Wilson) Auger. In 1938 she moved to Alberta from Hancock and graduated from Pequaming High School. Jean worked for Speciality Sales in L'Anse retiring in 1975. She married Paul "Tutta" Almi on May 2, 1975. Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church on L'Anse.
She is survived by her husband Paul "Tutta" of L'Anse; brother, Clayton (Marcella) Auger of L'Anse; sister Marilyn Hafbauer of Ionia, MI; son, Harold (Theresa) Blom of Jackson, MI; daughter Gayle (Curtis) Watkins of Howell MI; stepson, Biddle Almli of L'Anse; stepdaughter Alyce (Gerald) Seratti of L'Anse; five grandchildren, Kelly Stowe, Ronald Duguay, Beth Jarzebak, Jennifer Boehnke, David Blom; six great grandchildren. Jean is preceded in death by two sisters, Winifred Selden and Charlotte Saarinen; a brother, Calvin Auger.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2002 at 2 p.m., at the United Methodist Church. Rev. David Snyder will officiate. Burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery in spring. The Jacobson Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.

BARAGA -- John A. Hand, age 86 of Baraga passed away on Monday, March 4, 2002 at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he has been a resident for the past two years. Julanne Marie Isabelle
MARQUETTE -- Julanne Marie Isabelle, 74, of 902 W. College Ave., died March 4, 2002.
Julanne was born July 27, 1927 in Negaunee, Michigan. The daughter of John and Inga Honkavaara, she graduated from Negaunee High School and attended the University of Michigan.. She received her master's degree in English from Northern Michigan University. Julanne was executive director of the girl scouts for three years and was vice-president of the National Association of Teachers of English for two years. She taught English at the Ishpeming High School for three years, and taught English, Creative Writing, and American Literature at the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade levels at Marquette Senior High School for thirty years. Julanne thoroughly enjoyed being with words, and writing poetry was her passion. She was an accomplished pianist and violinist. On September 13, 1947 she married Henry W. Isabelle and they had four children. They were married for 54 years. Julanne was loved and respected by so many people; she was such a gentle, kind and spiritual being. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.
Survivors include; her husband Henry W. Isabelle of Marquette; three children, Julanne (Don) Rotta of Huron, OH, Mary (Terry) St. Pierre of Escanaba and Henry (Kathy) Isabelle of West Bend, WI; a grandson Henry Nathan Isabelle V of West Bend, WI, a brother, John (Lorraine) Honkavaara of Ishpeming, three nieces, one nephew and two cousins. Julanne Marie was preceded in death by her parents John and Inga Honkavaara and a son Henry Jon Isabelle.
There will be a memorial service at Messiah Lutheran Church at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 8, 2002 with Reverend Nancy Amacher and Reverend Jon Magnuson officiating. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Marilyn Elaine Wood
L'ANSE -- Marilyn Elain Wood, of L'Anse went to meet her Lord on Friday, March 1, 2002 after a sudden illness. She was born in St. Johns, MI., on December 4, 1944 to Earl and Madeline (Young) Nobis. She was raised on the family farm in Muir, MI., attending school in Ionia, MI. She graduated from Ionia High School in 1962. She attended classes at a small community college in Lansing, MI majoring in business.
On August 21, 1965 she married high school sweetheart Donald Wood. They started their lives together in Ionia later moving to Munising, MI and finally settling in L'Anse in 1979, where together they raised son Jim and daughter Melissa.
Marilyn was an avid gardener of flowers, vegetables and fruits, canning what she grew and giving much away. She enjoyed watching and feeding the birds that came to her feeders.
She and husband Don taught Square Dancing for many years and were still active on the Square circuit at the time of her death.
Marilyn was a member of the L'Anse United Methodist Church teaching Sunday school with husband Don. She was a past member of the church choir and helped out with many of the women's group fundraisers. She was an active fundraiser for the Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay, MI., one of her many charities. She had raised dogs for Leader dogs for the blind, in the past as well.
Marilyn was active in the Emmaus, Chrysalis and Keryx communities of the Upper Peninsula where she was loving known as Mrs. Agape. She had served on both their boards and was a current Chrysalis board member. She was involved in Fire-Up every spring in Marquette, sometimes loading the car with kids as well. She loved activities that involved children of all ages.
One of Marilyn's greatest loves was 4H. She currently had 24 children at various times in her home weekly doing crafts with plastic canvas and other recyclable household items. Many of her friends saved matchsticks, bottle caps etc., for her many projects. She taught many crafts at various 4H functions. She always enjoyed 4H Spring Achievement where her kids as she lovingly called them showed off their work or the year.
In Marilyn's spare time she crocheted and knit afghans and made quilts. She was always doing for others often without their knowledge. She will be sorely missed in this community.
Marilyn is survived by her husband of 36 years, Donald; her son Petty Officer A02 James and wife Gigi Wood of San Diego, CA; daughter Melissa Kagabitang of Greenville, MI; grandchildren David Kagabitang and Gerald and Stephanie Himmelsbach; her mother Madeline Nobis of Lyons, MI, brother Gordon and wife Leona Nobis of Muir and sister Doris and husband Daryl Pierce of Lyons. Her father Earl preceded her in death.
A celebration of Marilyn's life will take place on Saturday, March 9, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Rev. Tom Anderson and Rev. Gary Sasinowski officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 8 at the funeral chapel and one hour before services on Saturday. Memorials in Marilyn's honor may be directed to the Bay Cliff Health Camp. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse is assisting the family with arrangements.
Marjoie A. Brownlee
L'ANSE -- Marjorie A. Brownlee, 75, of L'Anse passed away at her residence Sunday, March 3, 2002, following a courageous battle with cancer. Marjorie was born in Sault Ste. Marie, MI September 22 1926, daughter of the late Russell and Erma (Fleming) Stonehouse. She was raised in the Soo and graduated from school there in 1945. On August 28, 1948, she was united in marriage to Robert Brownlee in the Soo. They moved to L'Anse in 1948. She was employed at Celotex Corporation as the accounts payable clerk until her retirement. Marjorie was a member of the United Methodist Church of L'Anse, a member of the choir for 43 years, and held many offices in the United Methodist Women's group. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, was currently president of the American Legion auxiliary, and a member of the firemen's auxiliary. She was also a member of the Lakeside Singers and a tireless volunteer worker for the American Cancer Society. Marjorie was known as a gracious and caring lady whose concern for others was an inspiration to those who knew her.
Mrs. Brownlee is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, son James (Gayle) Brownlee of Casper, WY; daughters Carol (David) Tembreull of L'Anse and Nancy (Whitey) Soli of Skanee; grandchildren Cindy, Tim, Dan, Nicole, David, Scott, Donald and Jeanette, great grandchildren Camile, Dorian, and Brandon. Also surviving are 2 sisters, Elizabeth Brown and Vivian (Earl) Riordan both of the Soo. In addition, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Brownlee will be held Friday, March 8, 2002 at 12 noon from the United Methodist Church, L'Anse, with Pastor David Snyder officiating. Family members will honor her as casket bearers and spring intermenty will take place in the L'Anse Evergren Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday March 7, 2002 from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel and for one hour before the services Friday at the church. There will be an Order of Eastern Star service at the funeral chapel Thursday at 7 p.m., followed by the American Legion Auxiliary service at 7:15 p.m. Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Brownlee were entrusted to the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse.
Elaine V. Pepin
ISHPEMING - Elaine V. Pepin, age 67 of 6155 Co. Rd. PB passed away on Tuesday March 5, 2002 at the Marquette General Hospital where she had been a patient since Saturday.
Elaine was born on Aug. 16, 1934 in Negaunee, the daughter of John and Hilda (Koistinen) Korpela. She was a graduate of the Negaunee High School, Class of 1951. She was a homemaker, and enjoyed gardening, knitting, reading and crocheting.
Survivors include her husband of 49 1/2 years, Robert of Ishpeming; eight children- Pamela (Marvin) Evans of Ishpeming, Michael (Jane) Pepin of Ishpeming, Alice (Don) Magnuson of Champion, Robert (Cindy) Pepin of Barstow, CA, Peggy (Mike) Kuzda of Ishpeming, Tim (Coleen) Pepin of Champion, David (Peggy) Pepin of Ishpeming and Chris (Kathy) Pepin of Ishpeming; 19 Grandchildren; 17 Great Grandchildren; Sisters- Irma Sharp, June Kirtly, Betty Logan, Verona Wehmanen, and Alice Jean Dahlstrom; Brothers- Bruce, Bernhart, Steven & Daniel Hill; two sisters-in-law- Jeanne (Arthur) Staniec and Helen Grzenia and a brother-in-law and father-in-law- Alice and Adelore Pepin; 2 brothers-in-law- George and Donald Pepin and 2 great grandsons.

Richard G. Rice
NEGAUNEE -- Richard G. Rice, 84, a former Negaunee & Champion resident, died at 9:15 PM on Monday, March 4, 2002 at St. Mary Hospital in Livonia.
Mr. Rice was born April 18, 1917 in Negaunee to Richard G. & Beatrice M. (Mitchell) Rice and attended Negaunee High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII having served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Following his service to his country he worked as a miner and in the construction industry before his retirement. He lived in Champion for many years before moving to Lansing and then to Westland. He spent many winters in Arizona where he was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars. He was an avid rock hunter and enjoyed making jewelry with his finds.
Surviving are one son, Craig (Mary) Rice, Lansing, one daughter, Judith Boulas, Westland, 1 brother, William (Alice) Rice, Ishpeming, 5 sisters; Rhoda (Gunnard) Pelto, Marion Maki, Elaine Savala, Elizabeth Trewhella, & Geraldine (William) Kipling, all of Ishpeming, 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Donald & Lowell Rice.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Harmon pastor of Mitchell United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Carol Reschka
MARQUETTE -- Carol Jane Reschka, 45, of 465A Silver Creek Road, Marquette, died early Thursday morning, March 7, 2002 at her home after a seven month illness.
Mrs. Reschka was born January 3, 1957 at Big Rapids, Michigan and had lived in the Marquette area since November of 1998. She was employed by Econo Foods at the service counter.
Carol found much enjoyment from gardening and the culinary arts, which she appoached with a passion. She won many ribbons at the U.P. State Fair for her cooking, plants, painting and canning.
Carol is survived by her husband, Walter J. "Sonny" Reschka whom she married on October 2, 1988 at Dearborn Heights, Michigan; five children, Steven (Kristi) Kenward of Kapolei, HI, Stacey Kenward of Frazier, MI, Alex Reschka of St. Clair Shores, MI, Taylor Reschka and Alaina Reschka, both at home; a granddaughter, Ivy Kenward; her parents, Glenn and Marion Jefts of Mecosta, MI; four brothers, Larry R. (Louise) Jefts of M'Loa, HI, Duane (Cathy) Jefts of Lake St.Louis, MO, John C. (Cinda) Jefts of Stanwood, MI and Paul (Denise) Jefts of Rodney, MI; also numerous nieces and nephews.

Jonathan (Jonnie) Hildner
MARQUETTE -- Jonnie Hildner, 89, died March 6, 2002 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, MI where he had been admitted on March 5, 2002. He had been a resident of Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming for the past fifteen months.
Jonnie was born February 17, 1913 in Princeton, Indiana. He was one of the seven sons of the Reverend Dr. Ernest G. and Louise (Smith) Hildner. When Jonnie was a child the family moved to Houghton, Michigan where Jonnie's father was Minister of the Houghton Presbyterian Church. Jonnie lived in Houghton until he finished 7th grade. The family then moved to Hillsdale, Michigan. Jonnie attended the Hillsdale Public Schools where he played football and basketball. His interest in basketball along with that of his brothers was nurtured by their father, Ernest, who played on the world's first basketball team in Springfield, Ma., coached by Dr. Nasmith. Jonnie is a graduate of Hillsdale College with a degree in Education. He went to the University of Michigan then attained his Master of Arts Degree from Northwestern University.
Jonnie married Ruth Sager and after graduation from Northwestern he began teaching school at Batavia, Illinois where he taught science, physical education and coached football and basketball.
Jonnie was a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Navy. He served in the South Pacific. Discharged from the Navy at Portland, Oregon, he took a job working in the textbook publishing industry. He married Margaret (Peg) in 1956 and moved to the Chicago area in 1957. He retired from the World Book Co. (now Harcourt-Brace Co.) in 1965 at which time he moved to Indian River, Michigan. He and Peg spent their summers in Indian River and wintered for a number of years in Florida. In 1980 they sold their home and moved to Marquette, Michigan to be near family.
Over the years Jonnie enjoyed fishing, golfing and in later years, gardening and reading.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his wife Margaret in December 2001; his parents; and five brothers. He is survived by one brother, Phillip of Pontiac, MI; two sons, Talbot of Laguna Beach, CA and Truxton of Pleasant Hill, CA; his step-children, Judi (John) Stewart of Carbondale, CO and David (Ruth) Ruff of Marquette, MI; and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a private memorial service at a later date. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mary Catherine Hunter
MARQUETTE -- Mary Catherine (Houk) Hunter, 91, died surrounded by family on Thursday morning, March 7, 2002 at Brookridge Heights where she has been living since January 2002. Prior to her death she wintered at The Landings on Skidaway Island in Savannah, GA and since 1958 had summered at the family camp on Lake Superior and Sauk Head Lake in Marquette County. She was born on February 15, 1911 in Detroit, MI to George and Edna (McDonald) Houk. She was raised in Detroit and attended Sullins College in Virginia; however, her education was cut short by the Great Depression. She married Robert E. Hunter of Nunda, New York in 1936. Mary prized the demanding responsibilities of raising four boys and instilled in them an appreciation of the value and dignity of all people. She was active in church and community service activities in the many places in which she lived including Detroit, MI; Pittsburgh, PA; LaGrange, IL; Hudson Heights, Quebec, Canada; Ann Arbor, MI; Hudson, OH; Bryn Mawr, PA; Bratenahl, OH; and Savannah, GA. In addition, she was active in global business travel with her husband that included two around-the-world trips.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Robert, who lives at Brookridge Heights in Marquette; four sons, David (Deborah) Hunter of Issaquah, WA, Harley (Jeanie) Hunter of Evergreen, CO, Scot (Mary Lee Rybar) Hunter of Ross, CA and Bruce (Julia) Hunter of Potomac, MC; and a brother, Hugh (Mary) Houk of Redford, MI. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Shelly Ahlquist of Woodbury, MN, Michael Hunter and Shaw Hunter of Denver, CO, Christina Hunter of Issaquah, WA, Michele Moore of Alexandria, VA, Robert Hunter of Point Arena, CA, Sarah Neapolitano of Albany, NY, Catherine Hunter of Ross, CA and Annabel Hunter of Potomac, MD; and by three great grandchildren, Lindsay and Robin Ahlquist and Nathan Moore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Charlotte Johnson in 1997.

Richard Lungerhausen
HERMANSVILLE -- Richard Lungerhausen of Hermansville died Thursday morning, March 7, 2002 at the Marquette General Hospital in Marquette following a brief illness. He was 80.
Richard was born on September 27, 1921 in Mt. Clemens, MI, the son of John T. and Florence (Skinner) Lungerhausen. He graduated from Highland Park High School and attended Michigan State University.
In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served with honor until the end of World War II. On February 17, 1944, he wed the former Anne Louise Earle of Hermansville, where they ultimately made their home. In 1956, Richard and his brother John set about establishing a steel fabrication plant in Hermansville named Brothers, Inc. He retired from business in 1981 to pursue his avid interests in golf and travel.
Mr. Lungerhausen served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Michigan Financial Corporation for a number of years and retired from the board in 1991. He was chief of the Hermansville Fire Department for several years and was a life member of the Forty et Eight and the American Legion. He enjoyed playing solitaire, working crossword puzzles, reading and spending time with his Siamese cat, Asia. His greatest love was his family, and he and his wife traveled extensively to visit their children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Louise of Hermansville; three sons, Charles (Susan) Lungerhausen of San Diego, CA, Richard (Jeanann) Lungerhausen of Denver, CO and John (Dixie Vice) Lungerhausen of Golden, CO; three daughters, Ellen Lungerhausen of Chicago, IL, Karen (Karl) Krepps of Marquette and Catherine (Jim) Rhino of Menominee, MI; one brother, John (Lorraine) Lungerhausen of Hermansville; and nine grandchildren, Matthew, Nicole and Megan Lungerhausen, Gina and Andrew Krepps, Ryan and Cari Lungerhausen and Michael and Sean Rhino.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William.
Friends may call on Monday after 9:00am (CST) at the Allo Funeral Home in Spalding. The Hermansville American Legion Floriana-Stecker Post #340 will conduct military rites at the Allo Funeral Home Family Chapel in Spalding with Pastor Jim Fegan officiating.
