Ellen Marie Ilves
MICHGAMME -- Ellen Marie Ilves, age 86, of 220 Railroad St., Michigamme, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2002 at the Bell Memorial Hospital.
Ellen was born April 17, 1915 in Wakefield, MI to the late Waino & Annie (Harkinen) Korpi. She has resided in Michigamme for the past 50 years.
Ellen was a charter member of the Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ishpeming, she belonged to the Michigamme Senior Citizens Center and she enjoyed playing cribbage, reading and crocheting afghans. Ellen loved animals & berry picking and was noted as a good baker & pie maker. In her younger years she was an avid bowler.
Ellen is survived by her son John (Helen) Ilves of Michgamme along with several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband William and a step sister Mae Boggs. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at the Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. Michael Burke officiating. Burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery in Michigamme.
Friends may call at the Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Pallbearers will be Art Benson, Wilson Boback, Kenneth Jaykka, Douglas Howe, Edward Warren and Dixon Holmgren. Arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.

ELY TWP. -- Jerry Allen Maki, age 52 of 1370 Co. Rd. CJ Champion, (Ely Twp.) passed away suddenly Sunday, March 17, 2002 at his home.
Jerry was born April 28, 1949 in Marquette to Georgine M. (Rolstone) and the late Martin M. Maki. He attended the Ishpeming Schools. He was a life long area resident. Jerry was a Vietnam era veteran. He worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Mining Company for 20 years, working at the Empire, Republic Mines & retiring from the Tilden Mine.
Jerry was a former member and officer of the Champion Legion, charter member of Greenwood Legion- Lillian Larson Post, and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion. He enjoyed helping others, especially senior citizens, he also enjoyed fishing, wood crafts, spending time with his grandchildren.
Jerry is survived by his wife Christine A. (Lattrel) Maki of Champion, his mother Georgine Maki of Ishpeming, 4 children: Jerri Lynn (Bill) Leader of Ishpeming, Jeffrey Martin (Kelly) Maki of Fond du Lac, WI, Justina Marie Maki of Ishpeming and Clayton Allen Maki of Minneapolis, MN, two step children, Stephen J. Macke of Houghton and Tracey Jo LaPine of Clarksville TN, 4 grandchildren; Aundrea, Haley, Christian & Nicholas, a step granddaughter Zoey, a twin brother James (Gale) Maki of Ishpeming and 2 sisters- twins Joan Hill & Judy (David) Reichel both of Negaunee, several nieces & nephews.

Lowell Phillip Liquia
ISHPEMING -- Lowell Phillip Liquia, age 72 of 507 E. Vine St., Ishpeming, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2002 at the Bell Memorial Hospital.
Lowell was born August 5, 1929 in Palmer to the late Phillip & Louise (LaMere) Liquia. He was a life long area resident. Lowell worked 42 years for the Cleveland Cliffs Mining Company, retiring in 1990 from the Tilden Mine. He played cribbage in the Ishpeming Cribbage League for over 20 years. He also enjoyed fishing & hunting.
Lowell is survived by 3 daughters: Debra (Darrell) Vanhorn of Ishpeming, Pamela (Kerry) Juntila of Champion and Laurie (David) DeRoche of Ishpeming a son Lowell T. Liquia of Ishpeming, 3 brothers: Roland (Donna) Liquia, Edward Liquia and Dennis (Betty) Liquia all of Suomi Location, 4 sisters: Muriel, Mary Lou (Keith) Fraley of Suomi Location, Carol Liquia of Ishpeming and Betty Liquia of Suomi Location, 5 grandchildren and numerous nieces & nephews. Lowell was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, December 2000, and a sister Shirley Arnold.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul G. Donelson to officiate. Inurnment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery Columbarium.

Ahti A. Mackela
MUSEKGON, MI -- Ahti Arthur Olavi Mackela, age 89, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2002. He was born February 2, 1913 in Ishpeming, MI. He married the former Dorothy Williams of Grand Rapids. She passed away March 18, 1994. He married Jean Leppanen of Sehlby and they moved to Muskegon. He was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church. He graduated from Ishpeming High School and the
U of M of MI with a BA and an MA in Science Ed and also in Chemistry. He taught chemistry in high school and later taught chemistry for twenty-seven years at Mott Community College in Flint before his retirement. He was active for thirty-one years in Greater Flint Toastmasters including the International with a DTM. He was an active member of Woodside Chuch in Flint for over forty years. Mr. Mackela served in the 40th Chemical Laboratory Company during WWII in England and France. He donated his body to the U of M Medical School and later intermenty will be at Washtenong Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Ann Arbor. There will be no visitation. He is survived by his wife; Jean; daughter, Carol J. Mackela; granddaughter, Amy Mackela; sister, Lillian Narkoli; nephews, William Norkoli and James Makela. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Elsa Beilharz and brother, Oiva Makela. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 6, 1 pm at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1132 W. Southern Ave., Muskegon with Rev. John Grostic and Rev. Thomas Williamsen officiating. Memorials to Our Savior Lutheran Church Building Fund or Woodside Church Scholarship Fund are appreciated. Donations to the Alzheimers Association or the Parkinson Foundation would be welcome also.

Michael Allen Larson
APPLETON, WI -- Michael Allen Larson, 28, of Appleton, Wisconsin, formerly of Marquette, died Friday evening, March 15, 2002 in Green Bay, Wisconsin from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mr. Larson was born September 28, 1973 in Marquette to Ralph and JoAnn (Dougherty) Larson. He graduated from Bi-County Alternative High School.
Mike enlisted in the United States Navy in September of 1996 and honorably discharged in September of 2001. He then took up residence in the Appleton, Wisconsin area and was employed by a welding machine manufacturing company at the time of his death. He was previously employed by a local truck service company.
Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching Red Wing hockey games.
He is survived by his mother, JoAnn Larson of L'Anse; his mother, Laura Larson of Gwinn; one brother, Eric (Donna) Larson of Gwinn; two sisters, Sandy Larson and Angela DuShane, both of L'Anse; step-grandparents, Dick and Violet Lilly of Arnold, MI; a niece and nephew, Amber Gibson and Eric Larson, Jr.; aunts and uncles, Dan and Kris Larson of Marquette, Debbie and Don Quayle of Appleton, WI, Richard Larson, Debbie Larson and Dan and Carol Voorhees all of Marquette. His father, Ralph Larson, preceded him in death.

Vaughn E. Wright
MARQUETTE -- Vaughn E. Wright, 73, of 119 Pinebrook Drive, Marquette, died Saturday afternoon, March 16, 2002 peacefully at home after an 11 month illness with his loving wife and the comfort and support of U.P. Home Hospice at his side.
Vaughn was born on December 8, 1928 in Central City, Nebraska to the late Edgar and Armelia (Reed) Wright. He served in Korea during World War II with th U.S. Army.
In his earlier years, Vaughn worked as a printer in Nebraska and Wyoming. He then became a substance abuse counselor, completing his studies at Hazelden in Minnesota. He worked as a substance abuse counselor at Marquette General Hospital, retiring in 1990. Vaughn was published author having written the book "From Addiction to Serenity".
He enjoyed playing the harmonica and loved to sing. He also enjoyed both reading and writing poetry. Vaughn was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Gwinn and often led bible study classes in his home.
He is survived by his wife, Terrlyn "Terry" of Marquette whom he married on April 21, 1974 at Quinnesec, Michigan; one son, Michael Vaughn (Susan) Wright of Sanbornville, NY; one daughter, Rhonda Sue (Bernie) Masimer of Glenwood Springs, CO; one brother, Alanson (Peggy Jo) Wright of San Jose, CA; also five grandchildren, one great granddaughter and two nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Juvae Satterley.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2002 at 7 p.m. in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home with pastor Mac Woody of Shiloh Baptist Church officiating. Inurnment will take place in Northland Chapel Gardens. The family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday.

ALSTON -- Alice C. Heikkinen, age 82 of Alston, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2002 at Bayside Village in L'Anse.
The family requests that memorials be made to the L'Anse United Methodist Church Building Fund.
The funeral services will be on Friday, March 22, at 11:00 a.m. at the L'Anse United Methodist Church. Rev. David Snyder will officiate. WAUKESHA, WI -- Dean P. Wakeman, age 63 years, was born to Eternal Rest on March 18, 2002 at his home surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Max Cecil and Lucille Marie (Boudreau) Wakeman. Beloved husband of Irene (nee Lave) for 23 years. Dear father of Jennifer, Lindsay, Sarah and step-son Jason Tuma. Brother of Judie (Jim) Emerson and John (Nancy) Wakeman. Son-in-law of Ed (Barb) Lave and Irene (Delbert) Beverage. Brother-in-law of Bert Beverage and Tom (Carolyn) Lave, Christy Blankenstein. Also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Dean served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve from 1959 to 1964. He was a Scheduling Analyst for International Truck & Engine for 39 years. He was an active member of Waukesha Bible Church where one of his greatest passions was serving as a leader of Awana Clubs. He also served as usher and greeter.
Visitation will be after 3 PM Friday at Waukesha Bible Church, 853 W24079 Glendale Rd., with Services at 6 PM. Committal Services with full Military Honors will be held Saturday, please meet at the church at 10 AM for the Procession to Salem Cemetery, Wales, WI. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Waukesha Bible Church Awana Clubs or the American Cancer Society.

NAUBINWAY -- Frederick Merle Merriam, 74, of Naubinway, died Monday evening March 18, 2002 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at 11:00am at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Naubinway with Fr. Tim Hruska officiating. Interment will take place at Naubinway Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday, March 26 from 4-7pm with prayers for the deceased recited at 6:00pm.
