Sharon L. Lequia
NEGAUNEE TWP. - Sharon L. Lequia, 61, of 65 Midway Drive, Negaunee Township, died Thursday, February 15, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where she had been a patient for one week. She was in ill health since October.
Sharon was born April 24, 1939 in Negaunee to the late Einar and Allie (Luokkala) Johnson. She was a life long resident of Negaunee and a member of the Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church. She enjoyed being with her family, knitting, crocheting, and baking.
She is survived by her husband Kenneth, four daughters: Deborah (Bill) Taylor of Negaunee, Sherrie (Kenneth) Puppe of Hensel, ND, Tina (Keith) Carlson of Negaunee, and Sarina (James) Heikkila of Palmer, two sons: Timothy (Ann) Lequia of Clarksburg Location and Terry (Kim) Lequia of Novi, five brothers: Einar Johnson of Negaunee, Benhard Hill of Apple Valley, CA, Bruce Hill of Negaunee, Arthur (Jean) Hill of Ishpeming, and Daniel (Nancy) Hill of Spencer, WI, two sisters: Alice Dahlstrom of San Diego, CA and Verona Wehmanen of Negaunee, 13 grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Gail Jandron and Virginia King.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 18, 2001 at 4:00pm at the Perala Funeral Home with Rev. D. Michael Carriere officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00pm until the time of the service. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens.
Bertha M. Trombetta
ESCANABA -- Bertha M. Trombetta, 91, formerly of Eastpointe, Michigan died on Friday, February 16, 2001 at St. Francis Hospital.
She was born August 26, 1909 in Marquette, Mich., the daughter of Michael and Edna (Remillard) Hogan and was married to Henry Trombetta July 22, 1944. He preceded her in death October 1998.
She had worked for the Savings Bank Insurance Agency and the Northern Michigan Insurance Agency of Marquette as office manager prior to moving to California. There she was a stenographer with the chemical dept. at Calteck Institute of Engineering. She moved back to this area in December of 1998. She was a member of St. Anne Church and had enjoyed skiing with her husband.
She leaves to survive: 1 Daughter; Mary Trombetta of Escanaba, 2 Nieces: Kathy Brunet of Escanaba and Mary Jane (Robert T.) Ladeck of Gladstone, 3 Nephews: Patrick Hogan and Michael (Janell) Hogan both of Marquette, and Richard (Florence) Hogan of Ark, Sister-in-law: Mary T. Hogan, 1 grand Niece: Carmen Brunet of Escanaba.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry, 2 brothers: Bernard and William Hogan, and 1 nephew: Tim Hogan.
Friends may call at the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home in Escanaba on Tuesday from 3-5 PM. Funeral Mass for Bertha Trombetta will be held Tuesday at St. Anne Church at 6 PM with Fr. Mike Steber officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Church Cemetery in Roseville, Mich. A lunch will be served follwing the Mass in the Church Hall.

McMILLAN -- Shurley A. Brown, 64, of McMillan, died Thursday morning February 15, 2001 at the VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, MI.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 19, 2001 at 12:00 noon at the Lakefield Baptist Church in Lakefield Twp. with Pastor Clive Ellis officiating. Interment will take place at West Lakefield Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday, February 19th from11:00 am until the time of services.

Sister Daniel Marie Daniels
L'ANSE -- Sister Daniel Marie Daniels, age 73, of L'Anse, passed away on Friday, February 16, 2001 at her home.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 20, at 11:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart of Jesus, Fr. Greg Heikkala will officiate. There will be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church and on Monday from 5-8 P.M. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Parish prayers will be recited at 7:30 P.M. Burial will be in the Assinins Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
Alice Hillman
ISHPEMING -- Alice Hillman, age 89, of Rt. 1 Box 60, Ishpeming Twp. passed away Friday February 16, 2001 at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility where she has resided for the past year.
Alice was born Sept 23, 1911 in Fire Center, MI to the late Frank and Maria Kauppila and was a lifelong area resident. Alice was a homemaker who enjoyed baking, knitting, crocheting and providing hospitality to all who visited her. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a daughter Mary (Roy "Bud") Poirier of Ishpeming; a son Stevan (Ruth) Hillman of Champion; two sisters - Tyyne Ostlund and Jennie Lundin both of Ishpeming; two sister in laws - Madeline Kauppila of Ishpeming and Iris Kauppila of Aurora, CO; 6 grandchildren - Tod and Amy Poirier, John Joyner, Angela (Doug) Lewis, Sara and Marc Hillman, a great grandson Chase; along with several nieces and nephews. Alice was preceded in death by her husband Albert in April of 1997: brothers - Frank, Rudy, Matt, T.A., Waino and William Kauppila and a sister Anna.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday February 19, 2001 at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev's. Lauri O. Maki and C. Bruce Ulstad to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Sunday (Today) and at the Bethel Lutheran Church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services on Monday.

Annette L. Mackey
REPUBLIC -- Annette L. Mackey, age 78, of 301 N. 2nd St. P.O. Box 383 Republic passed away Saturday, February 17, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for the past four days.
Annette was born January 13, 1923 in North Lake to the late William & Exilda (Beauchamp) St. Onge. She was a life long area resident. Annette graduated from the Ishpeming High School, class of 1940.
Annette was an active member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary #5014. Rabbit Club, former member of local bowling and horseshoe Ieagues, enjoyed playing cards and volunteered her time at St. Vincent DePaul in Republic.
Annette is survived by her husband of 54 1/2 years Wallace "Wally" Mackey of Republic, a daughter Joanne (Jerry) Schirm of Minneapolis, MN, a son Bruce (Karen) Mackey of Clermont, FL, 2 sisters; Alma Hoppe and Rita Laitanen both of Marquette, 2 brothers; Elmer St. Onge and Al St. Onge both of Ishpeming, 2 grandchildren; Christopher and Benjamin Schirm, several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers Albert and Raymond and a infant son Joseph. A Mass oF Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 20, 2001 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Fr. Gilles Brault officiating. Burial will be in the Republic Twp. Cemetery.

David J. "Wooley" Venn
REPUBLIC -- David J. "Wooley" Venn, age 40, of Rt. 1 Box 9C Republic died unexpectedly Friday, February 16, 2001.
David was born September 27, 1960 in Milwaukee to R. Paul & Donna (Levi) Venn. He was a life long Republic resident. Wooley was a member of the West Marquette County Pool League, Horseshoe League, and enjoyed playing cribbage. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.
David is survived by his parents R. Paul & Donna Venn Sr, a brother Ronald (Karin) Venn of Republic, a sister Connie (Mike) Rintala of Ishpeming, 2 nieces Angela & Gayle Venn, a nephew Danny Venn, great niece Olivia Venn, special friends Ray & Mary Ringuette. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Earl & Elma Levi and his paternal grandparents Camille & Gladys Venn.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Monday, February 19, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Lance Roberts officiating.

Kathleen "Katie" E. Racine
ISHPEMING -- Kathleen "Katie" E. Racine, age 73 of 895 Patriot Dr. North Lake Location died peacefully at home with her family and Lake Superior Hospice workers at her side.
Kathleen was born October 23, 1927 in Ishpeming to the late John & Natalie (Clague) Quayle. She was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School. She married Francis Racine on May 26, 1951 in Ishpeming. Katie was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and served with the Naomi Circle for many years.
Katie is survived by her husband Francis "Bucky" Racine of Ishpeming; a daughter Christine (Dale) Phillips of Ishpeming, a son Stephen "Abner" (Vicky) Racine of Ishpeming, a sister Grace (Leslie) Hietala of Palmer, 2 brothers - John (Carol) Quayle of FL and Edward "Skip" (Jean) Quayle of Ishpeming; 4 grandchildren - Courtney (Devon) Johnson, Kerri Allen, Casey Phillips and Meghan Racine; 2 great granddaughters - Allie and Sophie; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister Betty Hensley in May of 2000.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday February 24, 2001 in the Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce C. Hatch to officiate. Inurnment will be at Northland Chapel Gardens.

Louise E. Markel
CHATHAM -- Louise E. Markel, age 52, of East China ( formerly of Chatham, Michigan), went to be with her Lord on Friday, February 16, 2001. She was born in Marquette, Michigan on November 14, 1948, a daughter to Reino R. and Elsie H. (Waananem) Akkala.
Louise was 1966 graduate of Eben High School in Eben Junction, Michigan, and earned her degree from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, in 1970. She taught home economics for 17 years at Lanse Creuse High School, Mt. Clemens. She was a member of Delta Zeta sorority and St. Martin's Lutheran Church, Marine City. Louise enjoyed sewing and cooking.
Surviving are her son, Joseph J. II of Marine City; parents Reino and Elsie Akkala of Chatham, Michigan; and brother, David Akkala of Chatham.
Services are Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. in St. Martin's Lutheran Church, Marine City, with Rev. Dr. Donna J. Osterhout officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Marine City. Visiting in the Bowers-Rose Funeral Home, Marine City, is Monday 7 - 9 P.M. and Tuesday 2-4 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. and in the church on Wednesday from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 23, 2001, at 2:00 P.M. in Sion Lutheran Church, Chatham, Michigan.

Mario L. Gelmi
MANISTIQUE -- Mario L. Gelmi, age 77 of Sunset Beach, Indian Lake, Manistique died February 15, 2001 at the Sarasota Hospital in Sarasota, Florida.
He was born January 4, 1924 in Ishpeming, Michigan the son of Joseph and Emma (Barboglio) Gelmi and attended school there. He spent the greater part of his life in Ishpeming and Crystal Falls, moving to Manistique 15 years ago from Crystal Falls.
On December 26, 1953 he married Marilyn P. Nault in Ishpeming.
Mario was a member of the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church of Manistique and a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2026 of Manistique and the Schoolcraft County V.F.W. Post #4420. He served in the U.S. Navy in the pacific during World War II and was employed in the underground iron ore mining operations of the Inland Steel
He is survived by his wife Marilyn of Manistique; daughter, Susan (Ralph) Bjorne of Manistique; son, Robert (Debbie) Gelmi of Eden, WI; 3 grandchildren: Andrew, Dean and Tara Bjorne and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents a son, Michael Gelmi; grandson, Nicholas Bjorne, sister, Josephine Gelmi and brothers, Frank, Emelio and Paul Gelmi preceded him in death.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, February 23, 2001 with Father Peter Minelli officiating.
Memorials may be directed to the St. Francis de Sales Education Foundation. Arrangements are through the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique.
Mr. Leo Sulo Kantola
ISHPEMING -- Mr. Leo Sulo Kantola 71, 127 Karhi Road Negaunee passed away Saturday morning at his home.
Born February 3, 1930 in Ishpeming the son of George and Hilia (Pera) Kantola he was a lifelong area resident. He married the former Carol Paquette October 23 1954 in Negaunee.
Mr. Kantola worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company as a surveyor at the Consolidated
Fuel Company and the Jones and Laughlin Mining Company at the Tracey Mine retiring in1972. He was a member of the Eastwood Lutheran Church and was a former member of the National Guard.
He is survived by his wife Carol, 4 daughters, Mrs. Sally (Philip) Reyes of Oakland California, Mrs. Carole (Gene) Harmon Gladstone, Mrs. Linda (Percival) Kantola Basca of San Diego and Mrs. Willow (Robert) Lake of Ishpeming, 2 sons Leo Kantola of Champion and David Kantola of Negaunee. 1 brother George (Barbara) Kantola of Ishpeming 2 sisters, Mrs. Mary (Russell) Salo of National Mine and Mrs. Esther (Kenneth) Sikkila of Watton, 8 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents
he was preceeded in death by 1 son Robert in 1978, 2 brothers John and Elmer And 1 sister Aili Lawrence.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday 1 PM at the Racine Funeral Chapel in Ishpeming with Rev. Bruce Ulstad to officiate . Friends may call from 11 AM until the time of service on Tuesday. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
Mrs. Kathleen (Hiltunen) Hendrickson
NEGAUNEE -- Mrs. Katheen (Hiltunen) Hendickson, 88, of Negaunee a former Alston resident, died on Sunday, February 18, 2001 at the Eastwood Nursing Home in Negaunee where she has been a resident patient for 1 year.
She was born on August 12, 1912 in Athens, Wisconsin a daughter of Mathew and Maude (Wagner) Phillippi. She attended school in Marshfield, Wisconsin and moved to Alston at the age of 16. She was married to the late William Hiltunen, he died on Dec. 22, 1978. She married Carl Hendrickson on August 30, 1981 and he preceded her in death February 2, 2000. Kathleen had resided in Negaunee Township since 1962 and loved knitting, cooking and being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Mrs. Henrickson was active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Negaunee, bible study and
womens church guild. She was a former member of St. Henry' s Lutheran Church in Nisula.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husbands, 2 sons, Kenneth and Robert Hiltunen, a daughter-in-law Donna Hiltunen.
Surviving are 4 sons, James and Peter (Judy) Hiltunen both of Alston, John (Judith) Hiltunen of Saginaw, TX and Michael (Donna) Hiltunen of Little Chute, WI, 2 daughters, Lois Clarey of Utica, MI and Patricia (Don) Boyd of Caledonia, WI; 1 brother, John (Sally) Phillippi of Pelkie, 25 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hendrickson will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 20, 2001 at Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkiewith Revs. Michael Laakko and David Echelbarger to officiate.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.
Spring burial will be in the Nisula Cemetery.

Evelyn A. Donato
ISHPEMING -- Evelyn A. Donato, age 86, formerly of 204 N. Seventh St. Ishpeming passed away on Monday, February 19, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming Twp.
Evelyn was born January 8, 1915 in Ishpeming to the late Arthur and Bessie (Johnson) Matheson and was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She was a homemaker and a devoted mother and grandmother.
Survivors include 12 children- Rocco (Janet) Donato of Corona, CA, Stella (Robert) Ball or Oroville, CA, Mary Lou (Joseph) Suardini of Ishpeming, Arthur (Connie) Donato of Ishpeming, Irene (Gert) Cevigney of Ishpeming, Anthony (Dolores) of Jacksonville, FL, Rose Marie (Dione) Cecchini of Ishpeming, James (Barbara) Donato of Ishpeming, Ralph (Helen) Donato of Neenah, WI, Nicholas (Ann) Donato of Ishepming, Daniel Donato of Ishpeming and David Donato of Ishpeming; three sisters- Helen Lesage of Ishpeming, Mildred Jossen of Ishpeming, and Delores Bessander of Ishpeming; a brother Everett "Oli" Matheson of Utah; along with grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren totaling over 130, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Nicholas in 1987, a son Victor in 1991, a granddaughter Ann Marie Beerling, a grandson David Suardini, two brothers; Glenn & Gordon Matheson and a sister Irene Burgraff.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday Feb. 22, 2001 at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Peter Oberto to officiate. Burial will be at Northland Chapel Gardens.
Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 4 until 8 PM on Wednesday, where a parish wake service will be held at 6:00PM.
Pallbearers will be Evelyn's sons- Rocco, Art, Nick, James, Anthony, Ralph, Daniel & David Donato.
Violet A. Argall
WATERFORD -- Violet A. Argall, age 87, of Waterford, Michigan and formerly of Coldwater, Michigan died February 14, 2001 at Lourdes Nursing Home in Waterford, Michigan.
Violet was born on May 23, 1913 in Negaunee, Michigan to Gust and Mary (Pesola) Kokko. She married Albert J. Argall on February 15, 1936.
She was employed by the Whitney Co. in San Diego, CA. While in Marquette, MI, she was employed at State Farm Insurance Co. and at Montgomery Ward for some years.
Violet was a 25 year member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and had been active in the Laureate Chapter. She was a member of the Coldwater Art Club and the Coldwater Country Club, and a former member of the Susanna Circle of United Methodist Church, and also an Amvet Auxilliary member in Marquette, Michigan. Violet will be missed by her many nieces and nephews and remembered for her generous gifts and cards at each of their special events, which continued for three generations.
She is survived by her sister-in-law Jane King of Ishpeming, MI and several nieces and nephews.
Violet was preceded in death by her husband, Albert J. Argall in 1986; 2 Brothers, Waino Kokko Martin and George Kokko both of Negaunee, MI; and 3 Sisters, Katherine Kokko Martin, Waterford, MI, Lillian Kokko VanHallen, Negaunee, MI and Emeline Kokko Becker of Troy, MI.
Visitation was held on Friday, Feb. 16, 2001 at 6-8 PM at the Putnam Funeral Home in Coldwater, MI. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001 at 10 AM at the funeral home with Pastor Mona Joslyn officiating.
Burial will be at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI.
Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church in Coldwater, MI.
