David Chiconsky

LITTLE LAKE -- David George Chiconsky, 53, of 1906 E. First Street, Little Lake, died Tuesday morning at his home after a long battle with diabetes and heart disease. He was so strong yet the Lord finally relieved him from all of his misery.

Mr. Chiconsky was born April 8, 1947 in Marquette to George and Elaine (Baker) Chiconsky. He is survived by three children, Carol, Amy and Tory; five grandchildren; his father, George Chiconsky; two sisters, Diann (Robert) and Christine (Elmer); he will also be sadly missed by his many friends, aunt, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elaine, on August 14, 1999.

He gave many happy years and memories to all who knew him. May he now rest with the angels. Fly high David, we'll see you in our prayers.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Gwinn Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Timock officiating.

Frank R. Hill

CHATHAM -- Frank R. Hill, age 83, of 425 Fisher Street, Marquette and formerly of Chatham, died Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at 2:25 AM at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. He was born on November 26, 1917 in Chatham, Michigan to the late Arvid and Jennie (Norcole) Hill. Growing up, he attended school in Chatham. On September 27, 1941, Frank married Miriam Irene Tapola in Pontiac. He enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Force on April 7, 1943 and served as a radio operator on a C-47 transport plane in the European- African- Middle Eastern Theater. Frank earned the WWII service and victory medal, the American and EAME Theater ribbons, and the good conduct medal. Following his discharge on May 15, 1946, he returned to Chatham and spent time working for Ivar Samuelson hauling cattle. Frank's working career included working at the mines in Ishpeming, operating his family dairy farm in Sundell, driving truck in heavy construction, and logging in the woods, and he and Miriam opened the "Coffee Cup" restaurant in Chatham. In 1956, he moved his family to Pontiac and worked for General Motors for three years before returning to Chatham to purchase the Eat Shop Restaurant. During the time he and Miriam operated the restaurant, he was appointed Chatham's acting Postmaster. He also chauffeured the actors and actresses during the making of Otto Preminger's "Anatomy of a Murder." In 1964, he returned to Pontiac and worked for GM Truck & Coach until he retired in 1981. Frank and Miriam lived in Waterford after retirement. On August 30, 1985, Miriam preceded Frank in death after almost forty-four years of marriage. In 1987, Frank returned to Chatham. He was a member of Sion Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Ikkala Brothers V.F.W., and a charter member of the Chatham Lions. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. For many years, Frank spent time in Florida during the winters. In October of 1997, Frank suffered a stroke and his activities became limited to watching and listening to his favorite Detroite team of the season.

Franks is survived by is children, Bruce (Wilma) Hill of Chatham and Pam (Mark) Ferguson of Waterford, MI; 5 grandchildren, Alisa (Jason) of Newbill, Ginger Canniff, Jeff (Ellyn) Ferguson, and Heather Ferguson, all of Waterford, and Danny Hill of Chatham; 2 great-grandchildren, Kyre and Anthony; 2 brothers, Jack (Delores) Hill of Clarkston and Robert (Nancy) Hill of Villages, FL; 3 sisters, Margaret Beaudry of Waterford, Betty Livermore of Munising Vicky (Joe) Shega of Traunik; sisters-in-law, Maria Hill and Harriet Hill both of Chatham and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Arvid and Jennie, and his wife, Miriam, Frank was preceded in death by a sister Bertha (Victor) Ayotte and brothers, George Hill, Stanley (JoAnn Dzarnowski) Hill, Reino Hill, Kenneth Hill and Albert "Bernie" Hill.

Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 and at the church on Saturday afternoon from 2:00 until 3:00. Pastor Kirk Griebel will conduct the funeral on Saturday, March 3, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. at the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham and Frank will be escorted by Nub Hill, Kim Hill, Fred Burley, Rick Hill, Jason Newbill, and Jeff Ferguson.

Frank always said that when he died, memorials should be made to Mike and Miriam Illitch so they could purchase one or two free agents for the Tigers, and maybe then they could win a pennant. But his family has decided to go against his wishes and have memorials made to the Diabetes Association.

Joyce C. Mantyla

ISHPEMING -- Joyce C. Mantyla, age 77, of 110 Gold St. Ishpeming died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, February 28, 2001.

Joyce was born November 18, 1923 in Ishpeming to the late Charles & Ella (LaFave) Rock. She lived her childhood years in the Kingsford area where she graduated from Kingsford High School. She had lived in the Ishpeming area for the past 60 years, working as a bookkeeper at J.C.Penney, Woolworths and for Holli Forest Products.

Joyce was an active member of the Grace Episcopal Church, giving her time and talents to many of church functions. Joyce was an avid bowler, enjoyed sewing, arts & crafts and playing cribbage. She and her husband enjoyed traveling.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 55 years, Anselm "Unka" Mantyla of Ishpeming, a son Michael Mantyla of Ishpeming, a brother Vertin (Marie) Rock of Iron Mountain, a sister LaVerne Valente of Ishpeming, 4 grandchildren: Amanda and Melissa Jordan both of Negaunee, John Homer of California and Nicole Homer of Belding, MI, son in law Charles Jordan of Negaunee, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter Bonnie L. Jordan.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001 at the Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Virginia Peacock officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

A luncheon will be held following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

Pallbearers will be Ralph Bietila, Kenneth Oja, Norman Juhola, Art Williams, Jim Marra and James Lawson.

Arrangements are being handles by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.

Mildred Sneen

MARQUETTE -- Mildred L. Sneen, age 101, died early Wednesday morning, February 28, 2001 in the Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility. She was the mother of Mrs. William (Veryl) Albrecht of Marquette. Services will be held at 1 PM CST on Monday, March 5, 2001 in Our Savior Lutheran Church in Menominee, WI with Reverend Ron Burke officiating. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Menominee, WI.

The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is charge of local arrangements.

Steve Mitchell

MARQUETTE -- Steve L. Mitchell Jr., age 72 of 1538 W. Ridge St. #7 died Tuesday, February 27, 2001 in Marquette General Hospital. He was born on Sept. 2, 1928 in Detroit to the late Steve and Mary Mitchell, Sr. Prior to his retirement Steve was employed as an engineer for General Motors. He was a US Army veteran of both WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene. Three daughters Michelle K. (Marshall) Mitchell Beackeroot of Lapeer, MI, Janis H. (Rey) Rios of St. Paul, MN, and Jonelle (Karry) Moss of Knoxville, TN. Grandchildren Jeffrey, Katherine and Elizabeth Beackeroot, Anthony, Nathan, and Jonathan Rios, Tytus and Audrye Moss. A brother Andrew (Margaret) Mitchell of Zephyrhills, FL and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents, a brother Michael Mitchell and a sister Margaret Lokotar.

A private funeral service will be conducted Friday afternoon in the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Steven Rhoades officiating. Burial will take place in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Iron River, MI.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Peter White Public Library, or the Upper Peninsula Library for the Blind.

Wilfred J. "Pete" Brunet

NEWBERRY -- Pearl Harbor survivor, Wilfred J. "Pete" Brunet, 81, of Newberry, died Wednesday morning February 28, 2001 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 3, 2001 at 10:00 am at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Newberry with Fr. Tim Hruska officiating. Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry on Friday March 2nd from 5-8 pm with an Elks memorial service at 6:30 pm and prayers for the deceased following at 7:00 pm.

Clyde Bucklin
MARQUETTE -- Clyde Francis Bucklin, 82 of Marquette, died Wednesday afternoon, February 28, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital as a result of pneumonia and other complications.

Mr. Bucklin was born October 31, 1918 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was the son of Clyde F. and Elsie Mae (Rasnick) Bucklin. Clyde was raised in Minneapolis and moved to Marquette at an early age. He attended Graveraet High School and graduated with the Class of 1936. He then went on to Northern Michigan University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in secondary education in 1941.

In 1941-42, Mr. Bucklin taught secondary education in Kenton, Michigan. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Force as a meteorologist at the Panama Canal. Following his military service, he was employed as a special education teacher at Morgan Heights Sanatorium from 1947 through the mid 1960s. During this time, Mr. Bucklin attended graduate school at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan receiving Certification in Special Education. His work was recognized in a book documenting the history of special education in Michigan and in a book by Dr. James Acocks entitled: "A History of Tuberculosis in the U.P."

In 1959, he also began his teaching career as an English teacher with the Marquette Area Public Schools retiring in June of 1981. During his tenure, he was actively involved as an advisor for the student counsel and for various classes.

Mr. Bucklin was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and a long- time member of the Michigan Education Association.

He loved the outdoors, including hiking, camping and canoeing. He also loved reading, gardening and music.

Mr. Bucklin is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Loretto (Stanaway) Bucklin; a daughter, M. Kathy (Randall) Johnson of Marquette; one son, David Bucklin of Marietta, GA; grandchildren, Lauren and Chelsea Johnson of Marquette and Michael and Matthew Bucklin of Marietta, GA; sisters, Helen McKenzie of Ann Arbor, MI, Katherine (Magnus) Carlson of AuTrain, MI; a sister-in-law, Ruth Bucklin of Traverse City, MI; also several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William "Bud" Bucklin.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Canale- Tonella Funeral Home with the Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick officiating. Interment will take place in the Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from noon until the time of services. Refreshments will be served immediately following the service in the funeral home.

Donald J. Matta

SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA -- Donald J. Matta, age 63, of Shakopee, Minnesota died on Monday February 26, 2001 at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville. Mr. Matta was

born on September 16, 1937 in Negaunee, Michigan the son of Elmer and Bertha (Fors) Matta. He served in the Navy and was a retired worker for Scott County in the Maintenance Department. He was a member of Shakopee V.F.W. Post 4046.

Survivors include his wife Carolyn, sons Don (Ayesha) and David all of Shakopeestep children, Rick (Penny) Heetland, Kari (Roger) Freer, Kristi (Bill) Faust all of Arizona, Donald (Holly) Heetland of Richfield, Minnesota, Jeremy (Robin) Heetland of Farmington, Minnesota. 2 sisters Thyra Zager of Las Vegas, Kathy Shapley of Negaunee, Michigan, 3 grandchildren and 11 step grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2001 at 2 P.M.

Florence L. (Thomas) Boyd

ALPENA, MI -- Florence L. (Thomas) Boyd, 74, of Alpena, and former Marquette resident, entered eternal life Monday, February 26, 2001, in Zephyrhills, FL where she and her husband were spending the winter. She was born March 24, 1926 in Oshkosh, WI, a daughter of the late Roy and Marie (Woodman-Tufts) Steves, and was raised in Ashland, WI. Florence was trained and educated as a concert pianist and opera singer, also teaching opera for a time. She and her former husband, Robert "Bob" Thomas, resided in Marquette for many years, where she was an active member of the Marquette Moose Lodge Auxiliary, sang in the choir of St. Peter Cathedral, was employed at the former Union National Bank, and attended St. Christopher Catholic Church. Following her marriage to Bob Thomas, she later married Chet Boyd and they resided in Marquette for a couple of years before moving to Alpena. A devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother and great-grandmother, and sister, she is survived by: her husband, Chet Boyd of Alpena; three daughters, Cindy (Dan) Fassbender of Marquette, Charlene (Doug) Thennes of Manistique, and Roberta (William) Smigelski of Alpena; a son, Ted Thomas of Marquette; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Priscilla Steves of Federal Way, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents and former husband, Bob Thomas. Friends may call at the Bannan Funeral Home in Alpena on Friday from 2 to 8 pm. VFW Auxiliary rites will be held at 4 pm Friday afternoon in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Anne's Catholic Church in Alpena on Saturday morning, March 3, at 11 am. Local memorial services will be held in St. Christopher Catholic Church at a later date and will be announced by the Fassbender Funeral Home.

Franklin A. Byers

SANDS TOWNSHIP -- Franklin A. Byers, age 65, 156 Miller Road, Sands Township died at 12:17 AM on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for 2 week.

Franklin was born Nov. 6, 1935 in McFarland to Clyde & Flora (Gour) Byers. He lived in Sands Township for the past year with his foster family, the James & Terrie Barabe Family. Prior to living in Sands he resided in Marquette for 5 months and Ishpeming for 5 years.

Mr. Byers attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Palmer & St. Peter's Cathedral, Marquette.

Surviving are 4 sisters; Catherine Chesterfield, Cabool, Missouri, Irene Gasparotto, Addison, IL, Vivian Trull, Chandler, AZ, Beverly Bass, House Springs, Missouri, his foster family, James & Terrie Barabe & Family, several nieces, nephews, & cousins. He was preceded in death by his father in 1970, his mother in 1992 and one brother, Orville Byers in 1977.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 PM on Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Palmer with Rev. Jamie Ziminski officiating. Burial will be in the Sands Township Cemetery.

Friends and relatives will be greeted at a reception in the church hall following the service.

Arrangements are being handled by the Koskey Funeral Home.

Matthew Jacob Beck

BARAGA -- Matthew Jacob Beck, age 29, of Baraga passed into eternal life on Wednesday, February 28, 2001, at his home.

He was born September 18, 1971 in Ishpeming, MI, son of Martin Beck Sr., and Janice Magnant. Matthew graduated from Westwood High School in 1990. He was in the United States Marine Corps from 1991-94, during the Persian Gulf War. He married Nanette Genschow in 1997 in Baraga. He worked as a security guard at the Ojibwa Casino from 1995-99, and then for Celotex Corporation. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church. Matthew loved football and all sports.

He is survived by his father Martin Beck Sr., of Champion, his children Matthew II, Ashley and Kassidey, and the mother of their children Nanette Beck of Baraga, three brothers, Martin (Cara) Beck of Amasa, Mike Beck of Marquette, Mark Beck of Tampa, Florida, and a sister Marlene Beck of Baraga.

Matthew is preceded by his mother Janice Magnant, and sister Mary Beck.

Visitation will be on Saturday, March 3, from 10-12 noon at the Jacobson Funeral Home. The Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct a service at 11:30 a.m. The funeral service will be at 12 noon at Jacobson Funeral Home. Fr. George Joseph will officiate. Burial will be in the Assinins Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.

Ross Richard "Dick" Dawson

CHATHAM -- Ross Richard "Dick" Dawson, age 58, of 815 W. Munising Avenue and formerly of Chatham, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 28, 2001 at the Superior Health Haven in Munising. He was born on August 16, 1942 in Romeo, Michigan to Carl and Marjorie (Read) Dawson. Dick graduated from Romeo High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. Army and had worked for Dodge Main in Hamtramack, MI before moving to Munising in 1969. Dick went to work at Hartho and was a union member throughout his employment and had served as the union president for four years. He worked there over twenty-five years before leaving Timber Products. Dick was a member of the United Methodist Church of Trenary. He enjoyed baseball and was an umpire for Little League, fast-pitch softball, and slow-pitch softball. Dick had an ear for music and could play the clarinet and alto sax. He had a beautifiul voice and sang in the church choir. He enjoyed reading and was knowledgeable in many different subjects, and Dick really loved cars - old and new.

He is survived by his mother, Marjorie Dawson of Chatham; brother and sister-in-law, Dow and Peggy Dawson of Rapid River; sisters and brothers-in-law - Theresa and Norm Hancock of Wetmore and Beth and David Spencer of Michigan City, IN; nephews - Dow Dawson, Jr., Josh (Mary) Dawson, William (Rachael) Hancock, and Douglas Hancock; nieces - Marnie Dawson and Stacie (John) Tyner; 5 great nieces and nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Dick's father, Carl Dawson, preceded him in death on March 26, 2000.

The visitation and funeral will be on Saturday, March 3, 2001 at the United Methodist Church of Trenary. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until the funeral service at 10:00 A.M. Pastor Irene White will conduct the funeral and intermenty will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham.

Arthur R. Losey
GERMFASK -- Arthur R. Losey, age 81 of Route #1, Box 237, Germfask, Michigan died March 2, 2001 at the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique.

He was born May 23, 1919 in Germfask and attended school there. He has lived most of his life in Germfask, other than 23 years in the Flint, MI area. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. On February 10, 1945, he married the former Marjorie Rupright in Manistique. She preceded him in death on July 25, 1976. He later married Augusta Laura Hankins on April 11, 1978 in Manistique. Art was employed as a plasterer, a well driller, a woods worker and also did lawn maintenance for Germfask Township. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially deer hunting and fishing.

Art is survived by his wife, Augusta Losey of Germfask; a daughter, Janice (Stephen) Jack of Germfask; 3 sons, Arthur Dale (Brenda) Losey of Irons, MI and Ronald (Marietta) Losey and William Losey, both of Germfask; five grandchildren, eight great- grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Sunday, March 4, 2001 at Messier- Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, March 5, 2001 at the funeral home with Elder Nellie Burns officiating.

Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Germfask.

Bernice E. Miller

MARQUETTE -- Bernice E. Miller, 99, fomerly of 316 Pine Street, Marquette, entered eternal life early Thursday morning, March 1, 2001, at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she had resided since February 1998. She was born October 4, 1901 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Silas and Elizabeth (Hackett) Moffatt and was a lifelong Marquette resident. On November 21, 1927, she married John P. Miller in Marquette. A homemaker, Bernice was very sociable, enjoying the company of friends, playing cards, and taking long walks. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral, former member of the Cathedral Altar Society, and a devout churchgoer who attended daily mass while her health permitted.

A loving mother, proud grandmother and great- grandmother, and aunt, she is survived by: her son, Jack (Rita) Miller of San Antonio, TX; five grandchildren, Patrick Miller and Carolyn Miller of San Antonio, TX, Cathy (Joseph) Webb of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX, Thomas (Mary) Miller of Sunrise, FL, and Ann Miller of Austin, TX; two great- grandchildren, Lauren Webb and Joseph Webb III both of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews including, R. John Campbell, Robert Campbell, Raymond Campbell, and Barbara Campbell. In addition to her parents, Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Miller in 1953, a son, James R. Miller in 1936; grandson, Michael Miller in 1998; three sisters, Florence Osterich, Katherine Campbell, and Lucille Palmer; and two brothers, Harvey and Earl Moffatt.

Friends may call at the Bishop's Room in St. Peter Cathedral on Monday, March 5, beginning at 9 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 am Monday morning in St. Peter Cathedral with Rev. Alexander Sample and Rev. Joseph Gouin, concelebrating. A reception for family and friends will follow in Cathedral Hall. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Bernice's escorts will be: Cathy Webb, Ann Miller, R. John "Jack" Campbell, and Robert Campbell. The Fassbender Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marie Alice Racine

GWINN -- Marie Alice Racine, age 79, 24 E. Sands St. Gwinn, died at 12:30 PM on Friday, March 2, 2001 at home.

Marie was born Jan. 24, 1922 in Escanaba to Charles & Julia (Guay) Racine, attended the Gwinn Schools and was a life long Gwinn resident. She was employed as a custodian for the Gwinn Area Public Schools for 15 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of St. Anthony's Church, Gwinn.

Surviving are her brother, Joseph O. Racine, Gwinn, a nephew, David (Julie) Racine, 2 nieces; Marybeth (Mark) Gudgeon and Ann (Jeff) Duvernell, 2 grandnieces; Ashley & Katelyn. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers and a sister.

Marie loved her life and her many friends including Pearl Cassidy, Joanne Peterson, Linda Boogren, & Jan Lundquist. She will be missed by all who knew her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gwinn. Father Ronald Timock will officiate and burial will be in the Gwinn Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Upper Peninsula Hospice Program in Marie's memory.

The Koskey Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
