Bernice E. Miller
MARQUETTE -- Bernice E. Miller, 99, fomerly of 316 Pine Street, Marquette, entered eternal life early Thursday morning, March 1, 2001, at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she had resided since February 1998. She was born October 4, 1901 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Silas and Elizabeth (Hackett) Moffatt and was a lifelong Marquette resident. On November 21, 1927, she married John P. Miller in Marquette. A homemaker, Bernice was very sociable, enjoying the company of friends, playing cards, and taking long walks. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral, former member of the Cathedral Altar Society, and a devout churchgoer who attended daily mass while her health permitted.
A loving mother, proud grandmother and great- grandmother, and aunt, she is survived by: her son, Jack (Rita) Miller of San Antonio, TX, Cathy (Joseph) Webb of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; two great- grandchildren, Lauren Webb and Joseph Webb III both of Fair Oaks Ranch, Woods of Ishpeming, her mother Katie Hill of Ishpeming, her step father David Hill of Iron River, 5 children: James Petersen of Chicago, Samantha Petersen of Mt. Pleasant, MI, William Petersen of Humboldt, Joshua and Luke Woods of Ishpeming, sister in laws Lisa Washington High School, Milwaukee. She attended St. Luke's School of Nursing in Marquette and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1958. She was a Negaunee resident for 41 years. She worked for Marquette General Hospital and retired as the Education Coordinator in 1999 with 41 years of service.
Mrs. Sylvester was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee. She enjoyed sewing, crafting and making things for her children & grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time at her Florida; two brothers Mason M. Pearce and Philip S. (Deborah) Pearce of Marquette, one nephew Mason M. Pearce Jr., also of Marquette; one uncle David E. Pearce of Charlotte, Michigan to the late August and Mary (Erickson) Sidbeck. Millie lived most of her life in the Munising area and had graduated as Valedictorian of the 1933 Wm. G. Mather High School. She married Victor True in 1937. He preceded her in death on April 9, 1974. Millie had worked at Madigan's Hardware, the Co-op Store, and Munising Memorial Hospital as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Alger County Historical Society, and the Munising Senior Citizens (where she also was their bookkeeper.) On February 23, 1985, Millie married Rynhold Betts. He preceded her in death on April 21, 1986. She enjoyed spending time with her family, knitting, and playing cards. Millie also loved music and played the organ. She played the accordion in the Senior Citizens Kitchen Kettle Band for years. She had been a three year resident of Whispering Pines in Chatham before moving to the Eastwood Nursing Center in September of 1998.
She is survived by her children- Victor (Margie) True of Parker, CO, Thomas (Jonnie) of Negaunee, and Helen True of OH., and graduated with honors from Highland Park High School in Highland Park, MI. He was also a graduate of Cloverland Commercial College of Escanaba and of many night school and extension courses from the University of Michigan Credit Union League, Founder and President of
U.P. Realty Company Inc., which he sold many years ago when he retired. Before retirement he had been a member of the Michigan, died March 4, 2001 in Manistique.
She was born December 6, 1960 in Wichita Falls, Oklahoma. She moved to Manistique in January 1998 from Gladstone.
Debbie enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing pool, country dancing and leather crafts. She was also a Jeff Gordon Nascar fan, a Dallas Cowboys fan, and was a member of the Manistique Eagles Club.
Survivors include: a daughter, Jennifer Michelle (Ivan) Hardwick of Manistique and two grandchildren, her parents and a sister.
Visitation will be from12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 10, 2001 at Messier- Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. The Funeral will take place at 2:00 PM, Saturday, at the funeral home. The burial will be in New Garden Cemetery.
Wilma M. Torma
COVINGTON -- Wilma M. Torma, 80, of Covington joined with the Lord on March 5, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital following an illness of several months. Mrs. Torma was born in Covington, daughter of the late Julius adn Aino (Horsma) Johnson. She attended Watton area schools. On June 8, 1946, she married Paul Torma in Hancock, MI. He preceded her in death in September of 1991. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Covington, a member of the church choir, the church women's league, Sunday school teacher. The love of her life was her family, she enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, playing the piano and organ. She was fond of sports and loved animals.
Wilma is survived by three daughters; Barbara (Carl) Nurmi of Watton, Lorraine (Roger) Christian of Crystal Falls, and Mary (Jeff) Gibson of Birnhamwood, WI, grandchildren; Amy, Peggy, Lisa, Jeff, Laura, Stephanie, Peter, Stephen, Elijah, Jenni, Brandy, great- grandchildren; Cheyanne, Shaun, Paige, Dylan, Katelyn, Joshua, Jacob, Lily. She is also survived by brother Wiliam (Helen) Johnson of Covington, two sisters; Vienna Forslund of Ironwood, Viola Manninen of Covington, step-brother, Arne Seppala, Ishpeming, step-sister, Siirka Hurme of Lantana, FL, sisters-in-law; Aileen, Anita, Pearl, Norene, Helmi. Mrs. Torma is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded by her step-mother, Lempi, brothers; Wayne, Wilho, Laurie, Vernor, Walfred and Wesley.
Funeral services for Mrs. Torma will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2001 from Trinity Lutheran Church, Covington. Pastor Mark Reinsch will officiate and Spring burial will take place in the Covington Cemetery. Her grandchildren will honor her as casket-bearers. The family will greet friends Thursday, March 8, 2001 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, and one hour prior to the service at the Church on Friday. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse assisted the family with arrangements.
Ida H. Rehn
HARVEY -- Ida H. Rehn, age 84, of Cherry Creek Village, Harvey former Skanee resident, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital.
She was born on March 1, 1917 in Skanee, daughter of the late Hjalmer and Esther (Lundberg) Johnson. Ida attended school in Skanee. She married Delore Rehn on September 4, 1937 in L'Anse and he preceded her in death on April 1, 1970. Mrs. Rehn worked as a nurses aide at the Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L'Anse retiring in 1978. She moved to Pontiac in 1978, living there until 1992 when she moved to Cherry Creek Village in Harvey.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Delore, sister Harriet Peterson.
She is survived by two sons Donald (Jerry) Rehn of Goliad, Michigan, six grandchildren Karin, Craig, Cindy, Steve, Susan Rehn, Elizabeth Garrison, four great grandchildren Camile, Karrisa, Katelyn & Kacee. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held
1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2001 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee with pastor Judy Mattson to officate. Inurnment will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery.
The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is in charge of the arrangements.
Irene R. Burcham
CHELSEA -- Irene R. Burcham, of Chelsea, formerly of Detroit, age 84, died Tuesday March 6, 2001 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born October 27, 1916 in Gladstone, Kentucky, also Zion United Methodist Church in Detroit. On October 28, 1939 she married John Briggs Burchman Sr. and he preceded her in death on April 8, 1996. Surviving are 1 son John B. (Rosanne) Burchman Jr., of Ishpeming and 1 daughter Janice (David) Dunlap of Stockbridge, 1 brother, Howard Cavil of Fall Church, VA, 3 grandsons, Brian (Dania) Dunlap, John Dunlap, and Bradley Dunlap, also 1 great-grandchild, Samantha Briggs Dunlap. She was also preceded in death by 4 sisters, Myrtle California. He was a 1979 graduate of Grants Pass High School in Grants Pass, Texas, graduating June of 1981.
His first assignment was to the 410th Security Police Squadron, K.I. Sawyer AFB, Michigan, back into his primary AFSC services. Due to the base closure, he was then assigned to the 366th Services Squadron, Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. He was promoted to Master Sergeant on December 1, 1998 and last served in Morale and Welfare Activities in Naples, Italy.
Master Sergeant Hatcher is a 1995 graduate of the NCO Academy and a 1984 graduate of Airmen Leadership School at K.I. Sawyer AFB, Kentucky; also surviving are two aunts, one uncle, several nieces and nephews, and many close friends. Josh will be missed by everyone who knew him. Josh was the father of two children who went to the Lord before him and was also preceded in death by his mother, Jacqueline Hatcher.
Funeral services with full military rites for Master Sergeant Hatcher will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2001 at Bethel Baptist Church in Marquette at 11 a.m. with Rev. Charles L. Tooman of the Church of Our Saviour officiating. Interment will take place in the Negaunee Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home and also one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
