Bernice E. Miller
MARQUETTE -- Bernice E. Miller, 99, fomerly of 316 Pine Street, Marquette, entered eternal life early Thursday morning, March 1, 2001, at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she had resided since February 1998. She was born October 4, 1901 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Silas and Elizabeth (Hackett) Moffatt and was a lifelong Marquette resident. On November 21, 1927, she married John P. Miller in Marquette. A homemaker, Bernice was very sociable, enjoying the company of friends, playing cards, and taking long walks. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral, former member of the Cathedral Altar Society, and a devout churchgoer who attended daily mass while her health permitted.
A loving mother, proud grandmother and great- grandmother, and aunt, she is survived by: her son, Jack (Rita) Miller of San Antonio, TX; five grandchildren, Patrick Miller and Carolyn Miller of San Antonio, TX, Cathy (Joseph) Webb of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX, Thomas (Mary) Miller of Sunrise, FL, and Ann Miller of Austin, TX; two great- grandchildren, Lauren Webb and Joseph Webb III both of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews including, R. John Campbell, Robert Campbell, Raymond Campbell, and Barbara Campbell. In addition to her parents, Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Miller in 1953, a son, James R. Miller in 1936; grandson, Michael Miller in 1998; three sisters, Florence Osterich, Katherine Campbell, and Lucille Palmer; and two brothers, Harvey and Earl Moffatt.
Friends may call at the Bishop's Room in St. Peter Cathedral on Monday, March 5, beginning at 9 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 am Monday morning in St. Peter Cathedral with Rev. Alexander Sample and Rev. Joseph Gouin, concelebrating. A reception for family and friends will follow in Cathedral Hall. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Bernice's escorts will be: Cathy Webb, Ann Miller, R. John "Jack" Campbell, and Robert Campbell. The Fassbender Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Gwen A. "Teena" Woods
ISHPEMING -- Gwen A "Teena'' Woods, age 39, of 1530 Glenwood Ln. lshpeming Twp. passed away Thursday, March 1, 2001 at her residence in the company of her husband & mother.
Teena was born August 17, 1961 in Loveland, CO to Katie Hill and the late Curtis Edwin Beery. Teena spent her childhood years in the Iron River area prior to moving to Ishpeming.
Teena was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, served on the Service Group and had a special interest in Christ the King Preschool. Teena generously supported the Jerry Lewis Telethon for many years. Teena spent much of her time involved in Genealogy Research. She enjoyed traveling, spending time at camp, reading, fishing, & gardening. She also was an avid Packer fan.
Teena is survived by her husband, whom she married, July 8, 1987, Lee Woods of Ishpeming, her mother Katie Hill of Ishpeming, her step father David Hill of Iron River, 5 children: James Petersen of Chicago, Samantha Petersen of Mt. Pleasant, MI, William Petersen of Humboldt, Joshua and Luke Woods both at home, 3 sisters Carynn (Jim) Alberts of Phoenix, AZ, Crystal (Dean Hacker) Bartoli of Chicago, Barb (Ron) Rumpel of Freeland, MI, a brother Matthew Beery of Walkerton, IN, mother & father in law Betty & Luther Woods of Ishpeming, sister in laws Lisa Woods of Ishpeming and Vicki (Rodney) Saul of DesArc, AR, several nieces & nephews, former husband Ron Petersen of Humboldt and a special friend, whom she enjoyed visiting at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility, Alice Racine. She was preceded in death by her father, and maternal grandparents Mary & John Graverson
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at Christ the King Lutheran Church with the Rev. Timothy Ott officiating.
Friends may call the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Monday from 5:00-9:00P.M. and at Christ the King Lutheran Church on Tuesday from 10:00 until the time of service.

Judith Rae Sylvester
NEGAUNEE -- Judith Rae Sylvester, age 63, of 100 Queen Road, Negaunee died at 6:35 A.M. on Saturday, March 3, 2001 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Judy was born Oct. 15, 1937 in Milwaukee to Raymond & Eleanor (Fechtmeyer) Moss and was a graduate of Washington High School, Milwaukee. She attended St. Luke's School of Nursing in Marquette and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1958. She was a Negaunee resident for 41 years. She worked for Marquette General Hospital and retired as the Education Coordinator in 1999 with 41 years of service.
Mrs. Sylvester was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee. She enjoyed sewing, crafting and making things for her children & grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time at her Florida condo each winter.
Survivng are her husband of 41 years, Ronald R. Sylvester, her children; Ron Sylvester & Charles Schultz, Minneapolis, MN, Dawn (Wendell) Ward, Negaunee, & Mark Sylvester, Negaunee, her grandchildren; Ryan, Devin, & Jesslyn Ward, all of Negaunee, several nieces & nephews
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday at St. Paul Catholic Church with Rev. John J. Shiverski officiating. Entombment will be in the Northland Chapel Gardens Mausoleum.

Priscilla Anderson
ONTONAGON -- Priscilla Anderson, age 88, longtime Ishpeming resident died Friday, March 2, 2001 at the Maple Manor Nursing Center in Ontonagon.
Priscilla was born July 10, 1912 in Schaffer, MI daughter of the late Frank & Emma (Servant) Juchemich. She worked for the H.W. Gossard Co. as a seamstress for 37 years.
Priscilla is survived by 1 daughter: Lorraine Marley of Ontonagon, 3 grandchildren: Mark Marley of Ontonagon, Priscilla Chynoweth of Hancock and Madeline Manderfield of Atlantic Mine, 10 great grandchildren, 1 sister Leah Filizetti of Negaunee, 2 brothers: Edward Juchemich of Negaunee and Joseph Juchemich of Rapid City, SD, and numerous nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Clifford Anderson, a son Raymond Anderson, brothers Roland, Henry, Leo, Lester and Clarence Juchemich, sisters Anna May Peterson, Rita Anderson, Pauline Windsand and Genevieve Wirtanen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00A.M. Monday, March 5, 2001 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming with Fr. James Challancin officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Charles Hill
COVINGTON -- Charles Hill, 82, of Covington, MI, died shortly after admittance to Baraga County Memorial Hospital Sunday, March 4, 2001. Mr. Hill was born in Iron River, MI on August 11, 1918 the son of the late Charles and Hanna (Kniivila) Macki. Charles served in the US Army during World War II and was a self employed logger. On October 14, 1950, Charles married the former Helen Saarinen in Hancock and was an area resident most of his life. Charles was a life member of the Covington VFW Post 8945 and his leisure activities included fishing, making wood and cross country skiing.
Charles is survived by his wife Helen, daughters; Cheryl Hill of Davison, MI and Judith (Donald) Poupore of Negaunee, MI, grandchildren; Todd (Lestra) Hutula, Jill (Russell) Weidenmeyer, Angela, Ryan; great- grandchildren, Chloe, Dominique; half brother, Wiljo (Lillian) Kuusisto of Covington, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Hill will be held Wednesday, March 7, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse. Pastor Leon Linquist from the Bethany Lutheran Church will officiate and Spring burial will take place in the Covington Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel. The Covington VFW Post 8945 will conduct veteran services at 12:00 p.m. Following the service, friends are invited to join the family for fellowship and lunch in the Harrington Gathering Room located at the funeral home. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse assisted the family with arrangements.
Eleanor Partanen
L'ANSE -- Eleanor Partanen, age 88, formerly of L'Anse, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2001 at Verdugo Vista Nursing Home in LaCrescenta, CA.
Visitation will be on Thursday, March 8, from 5-8 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home, and Friday from10-11 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church. The Funeral service will be on Friday, March 9, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church. Rev. Margaret Grant will officiate. Burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery in the spring. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
Karen Pearce Guilbert
NORFOLK, VIRGINIA -- Karen Pearce Guilbert, formerly of Marquette, died peacefully at her home in Norfolk, Virginia, Monday, March 5, after a three month battle with cancer.
Karen was born on August 18, 1942 in Marquette, to the late Robert J. and Cynthia S. Pearce. Karen was a graduate of Graveraet High School and graduated from Northern Mchigan University in 1977.
Karen is survived by her husband, Jeff Guilbert; two daughters, Leslie Cory (Allen) Shoemaker of Marquette and Cynthia J. Cory of Tallahasee, Florida; two brothers Mason M. Pearce and Philip S. (Deborah) Pearce of Marquette, one nephew Mason M. Pearce Jr., also of Marquette; one uncle David E. Pearce of Charlotte, North Carolina; as well as many cousins, including Susan Pearce (Tom) Manson of Marquette. Karen will also be remembered and missed by many special friends in Marquette and St. Thomas, Virgin Islands where she spent many happy years.
Private services will be held in Norfolk, Virginia and at Middle Island Point where Karen spent many summers with her family.
The family requests that you consider memorials in Karen's name to The American Cancer Society or to The Peter White Public Library. Friends may meet with the family on Sunday, March 11, 2001 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Manson, 316 E. Prospect Street, Marquette.
Mildred "Millie" (True) Betts
NEGAUNEE/ MUNISING -- Mildred "Millie" (True) Betts, age 85 of 900 Maas Street, Negaunee and formerly of Munising, died on Sunday, March 4, 2001 at 3:45 PM at the Eastwood Nursing Care Center in Negaunee following a brief illness. Millie was born on March 18, 1915 in Thompson, Michigan to the late August and Mary (Erickson) Sidbeck. Millie lived most of her life in the Munising area and had graduated as Valedictorian of the 1933 Wm. G. Mather High School. She married Victor True in 1937. He preceded her in death on April 9, 1974. Millie had worked at Madigan's Hardware, the Co-op Store, and Munising Memorial Hospital as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Alger County Historical Society, and the Munising Senior Citizens (where she also was their bookkeeper.) On February 23, 1985, Millie married Rynhold Betts. He preceded her in death on April 21, 1986. She enjoyed spending time with her family, knitting, and playing cards. Millie also loved music and played the organ. She played the accordion in the Senior Citizens Kitchen Kettle Band for years. She had been a three year resident of Whispering Pines in Chatham before moving to the Eastwood Nursing Center in September of 1998.
She is survived by her children- Victor (Margie) True of Parker, CO, Thomas (Jonnie) of Negaunee, and Helen True of Indianapolis; daughter-in-law- Audrey True of Milwaukee; 12 grandchildren- Terri, Steven, Dean, Kirk, Christina, Randy, Matthew, John, Rhonda, Justin, Roxanne, and Nicole; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Millie was also preceded in death by her son, Carl True in 1992 and brothers, Paul and Carl "Tubby" Sidbeck, and sister, Helen Sidbeck.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 5:00 until 8:00. A Parish Vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m. The funeral will be conducted on Thursday, March 8, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Munising with Fr. Dennis L. Borca officiating. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
Onni Axel Johnson
ROCK, MI --Onni Axel Johnson, age 88, of 13306 Hwy. M-35, Rock, MI. died Saturday morning March 3, 2001 at home following a lengthy illness.
Onni was born in Leadville, CO. on March 23, 1912 the son of Thomas and Hilja (Pihlajaniemi) Johnson. He attended schools in Bessemer, MI., Eagle River, WI., Aberdeen, WA., Fairport Harbor, OH., and graduated with honors from Highland Park High School in Highland Park, MI. He was also a graduate of Cloverland Commercial College of Escanaba and of many night school and extension courses from the University of Michigan.
He was a self employed logger for many years, operating also as a timber buyer for the local cooperative. He was Rock Credit Union Treasurer and President until he resigned to operate as a real estate broker and insurance agent. As a young man he sailed on the great lakes. He was a veteran of WW II. He was a member of the Rock American
Legion Post #559 having served as Adjutant and Commander. He functioned for 35 years as a real estate broker and insurance agent. He held many offices: Chairman of the Board of U.P. Mutual Insurance Company,
President of U.P. Service Agency, President of Rock Credit Union, Vice President of Upper Peninsula Chapter of Michigan Credit Union League, Founder and President of
U.P. Realty Company Inc., which he sold many years ago when he retired. Before retirement he had been a member of the Michigan Real Estate Association, National
Association of Real Estate Boards and Upper Peninsula Real Estate Board. An active outdoors man, he was a member of the United Conservation Club.
Survivors include his wife Doris Joyce Norden who he married on June 23, 1945 4 Sons: Larry (Kathy) Johnson of Rock Daniel Johnson of Rock Jeffery (Mary) Johnson of Flagstaff, AZ Craig Johnson of Green Bay, WI.14 grandchildren 6 great grandchildren,1 brother: Roy (Helen) Johnson of Phoenix, AZ. Half brother: Issac Ranta of Marquette, MI. Numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step father Axel Ranta and his daughter Diane.
Services are tentatively scheduled for Saturday at the Rock Lions Club, confirmed day and time will be announced this week. The Skradski Funeral Home of Gladstone and Escanaba is in charge of arrangements.
Debra A. Miller
MANISTIQUE -- Debra A. Miller, age 40, of 900 Steuben, Manistique, Michigan, died March 4, 2001 in Manistique.
She was born December 6, 1960 in Wichita Falls, Texas and later moved to Oklahoma. She moved to Manistique in January 1998 from Gladstone.
Debbie enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing pool, country dancing and leather crafts. She was also a Jeff Gordon Nascar fan, a Dallas Cowboys fan, and was a member of the Manistique Eagles Club.
Survivors include: a daughter, Jennifer Michelle (Ivan) Hardwick of Manistique and two grandchildren, her parents and a sister.
Visitation will be from12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 10, 2001 at Messier- Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. The Funeral will take place at 2:00 PM, Saturday, at the funeral home. The burial will be in New Garden Cemetery.
Wilma M. Torma
COVINGTON -- Wilma M. Torma, 80, of Covington joined with the Lord on March 5, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital following an illness of several months. Mrs. Torma was born in Covington, daughter of the late Julius adn Aino (Horsma) Johnson. She attended Watton area schools. On June 8, 1946, she married Paul Torma in Hancock, MI. He preceded her in death in September of 1991. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Covington, a member of the church choir, the church women's league, Sunday school teacher. The love of her life was her family, she enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, playing the piano and organ. She was fond of sports and loved animals.
Wilma is survived by three daughters; Barbara (Carl) Nurmi of Watton, Lorraine (Roger) Christian of Crystal Falls, and Mary (Jeff) Gibson of Birnhamwood, WI, grandchildren; Amy, Peggy, Lisa, Jeff, Laura, Stephanie, Peter, Stephen, Elijah, Jenni, Brandy, great- grandchildren; Cheyanne, Shaun, Paige, Dylan, Katelyn, Joshua, Jacob, Lily. She is also survived by brother Wiliam (Helen) Johnson of Covington, two sisters; Vienna Forslund of Ironwood, Viola Manninen of Covington, step-brother, Arne Seppala, Ishpeming, step-sister, Siirka Hurme of Lantana, FL, sisters-in-law; Aileen, Anita, Pearl, Norene, Helmi. Mrs. Torma is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded by her step-mother, Lempi, brothers; Wayne, Wilho, Laurie, Vernor, Walfred and Wesley.
Funeral services for Mrs. Torma will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2001 from Trinity Lutheran Church, Covington. Pastor Mark Reinsch will officiate and Spring burial will take place in the Covington Cemetery. Her grandchildren will honor her as casket-bearers. The family will greet friends Thursday, March 8, 2001 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, and one hour prior to the service at the Church on Friday. Ida H. Rehn
HARVEY -- Ida H. Rehn, age 84, of Cherry Creek Village, Harvey former Skanee resident, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital.
She was born on March 1, 1917 in Skanee, daughter of the late Hjalmer and Esther (Lundberg) Johnson. Ida attended school in Skanee. She married Delore Rehn on September 4, 1937 in L'Anse and he preceded her in death on April 1, 1970. Mrs. Rehn worked as a nurses aide at the Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L'Anse retiring in 1978. She moved to Pontiac in 1978, living there until 1992 when she moved to Cherry Creek Village in Harvey.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Delore, sister Harriet Peterson.
She is survived by two sons Donald (Jerry) Rehn of Goliad, TX, Curt (Dorothy "Dee Dee") Rehn of Gwinn, two sisters LaVerne "Joy" (Tom) Clemons of Pontiac, Donna Holtz of lower Michigan, six grandchildren Karin, Craig, Cindy, Steve, Susan Rehn, Elizabeth Garrison, four great grandchildren Camile, Karrisa, Katelyn & Kacee. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held
1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2001 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee with pastor Judy Mattson to officate. Inurnment will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery.

Irene R. Burcham
CHELSEA -- Irene R. Burcham, of Chelsea, formerly of Detroit, age 84, died Tuesday March 6, 2001 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born October 27, 1916 in Gladstone, Michigan the daughter of Edward and Jeanette (Cavill) Cavil. She had lived in Chelsea for the past 4 years and enjoyed sewing, gardening and decorating her home. She was a member of the Bronston United Methodist Church in Kentucky, also Zion United Methodist Church in Detroit. On October 28, 1939 she married John Briggs Burchman Sr. and he preceded her in death on April 8, 1996. Surviving are 1 son John B. (Rosanne) Burchman Jr., of Ishpeming and 1 daughter Janice (David) Dunlap of Stockbridge, 1 brother, Howard Cavil of Fall Church, VA, 3 grandsons, Brian (Dania) Dunlap, John Dunlap, and Bradley Dunlap, also 1 great-grandchild, Samantha Briggs Dunlap. She was also preceded in death by 4 sisters, Myrtle Schmidt, Ethel King, Esther Jones and Mildred Snooks. Funeral services will be Thursday March 8, 2001 at the Chelsea Retirement Community at 3:00 p.m. with Karen Mars, Chaplain officiating. Burial will follow at Munith Cemetery. NEWBERRY -- Irma "Pat" E. Fishback, 88, of Newberry, died Tuesday afternoon March 6, 2001 at the Reynolds AFC Home in Lakefield.

Josh A. Hatcher
NEGAUNEE -- MSGT. Josh A. Hatcher, Jr., 39, of 115 E. Lincoln, Negaunee, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at home from an apparent heart attack.
Master Sergeant Hatcher was born September 17, 1961 in LaMirada, California. He was a 1979 graduate of Grants Pass High School in Grants Pass, Oregon and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1980. He graduated from basic training and attended Security Police Technical School at Lackland AFB, Texas, graduating June of 1981.
His first assignment was to the 410th Security Police Squadron, K.I. Sawyer AFB, Michigan. After serving four years as a security policeman, he cross-trained into the service career field. From there he was assigned to the 8th Services Squadron, Kunsan AFB, Korea. Next he volunteered to be a technical training instructor at Lowry AFB. After four years of instructor duty, he was assigned to K.I. Sawyer AFB, Michigan, back into his primary AFSC services. Due to the base closure, he was then assigned to the 366th Services Squadron, Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. He was promoted to Master Sergeant on December 1, 1998 and last served in Morale and Welfare Activities in Naples, Italy.
Master Sergeant Hatcher is a 1995 graduate of the NCO Academy and a 1984 graduate of Airmen Leadership School at K.I. Sawyer AFB, Michigan. He had received the following awards and decorations: Meritorious Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Achievement Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Organization Excellence Award, Air Force Good Conduct Award with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, NCO Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon and the NATO Medal with 1 Device.
Josh ended active duty in Naples, Italy on Saturday, February 24, 2001 and returned to Negaunee where he had aspirations of pursuing a degree in elementary education.
Survivors include his wife, the former Deborah L. (Rodeck) Hatcher whom he married on February 13, 1985 in Marquette; his father, Josh A. Hatcher, Sr. of Greensburg, KY; two sisters, Joy Hatcher of Greensburg, KY and Jennifer (Brandon) Branham of Travis Air Force Base, CA; maternal grandmother, Velma Finney of West Plains, MO; paternal grandparents, Bessie and Oscar Atherton of Kentucky; also surviving are two aunts, one uncle, several nieces and nephews, and many close friends. Josh will be missed by everyone who knew him. Josh was the father of two children who went to the Lord before him and was also preceded in death by his mother, Jacqueline Hatcher.
Funeral services with full military rites for Master Sergeant Hatcher will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2001 at Bethel Baptist Church in Marquette at 11 a.m. with Rev. Charles L. Tooman of the Church of Our Saviour officiating. Interment will take place in the Negaunee Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home and also one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
