Zella M. Williams
NEWBERRY -- Zella M. Williams, 91, of Newberry, died Wednesday evening March 14, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.
Born September 4, 1909 in Carter County, Kentucky, daughter of the late Henry & Minnie (Atkins) Frasure, Zella moved to Newberry at an early age and was a lifelong resident. A devoted housewife and homemaker, she owned and operated the former Golden Waters Restaurant for several years until the early 1970's. Zella also worked summers at the Camp 33 concession, provided home care to assist state hospital residents with social skills and worked at the former state hospital concession and canteen. Zella was a foster grandparent for several years and former member of the Rebekah Lodge #437. Her hobbies and interests included playing cribbage, craftwork, baking, hunting and fishing.
Besides her parents, Zella is preceded in death by her husbands Carl Stamper and Teno Williams; daughter Nelda Marks; brothers James, Lenis and Matt Frasure; one grandchild and one great- grandchild. Survivors include her three daughters Hattie (Bill) McNeal of Newberry, Crystal Mason of Marquette and Linda (David) Johnson of Ishpeming; nine grandchildren, several great- grandchildren and great- great- grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday March 17, 2001 at
1:00 pm at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Pastor Amos Wittenmyer officiating. Spring inurnment services will take place at Forest Home Cemetery.

Agnes Carol Peterson
ZEPHYRHILLS, FLORIDA -- Agnes Carol Peterson, 74, of 35816 Brisa Dr., and former Marquette resident, died Thursday March 15, 2001 at the East Pasco Center in Zephyrhills.
Agnes was born December 9, 1926 in Marquette to Alfred and Martha Larson Frederickson and grew up in this area. She was a graduate of Graveraet High School. She and her husband lived in Lansing and Chelsea prior to moving to Florida. Prior to retiring she was employed in food service for the Chelsea public schools for 14 years. She attended the Methodist church in Zephyrhills where she was active in the choir and women's club. While living in Marquette she attended Messiah Lutheran Church.
Agnes is survived by her husband Albert, to whom she had been married for 52 years; a son Robert(Sally) Peterson of Oxford, Ml, a sister Frieda Olsen of Lansing, a brother John(Marylyn) Frederickson of Glendale, AZ and two grandchildren, Megan and Ashley of Oxford, Ml.
Funeral services will be held at 5:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 20, 2001 in the Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Nancy Amacher and Rev. Tim Bernard officiating. Burial will take place in Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at the church at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edwin G. Hill
MILWAUKEE, WI -- Edwin Gustav Hill, age 74, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital on March 15, 2001.
In 1948, after joining the Michigan State Police, Ed married Dorothy Ann Cameron. He retired as a detective sergeant in 1973. Then, being too young to retire completely, he became the Chief of Security for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for the next 20 years.
Among his many accomplishments, Ed received the 1971 Marquette County Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award. He was awarded several Michigan State Police Meritorious Service awards. One involved saving a man's life and another for diligent work in solving the murder of a small child. Once, when President Johnson's wife, Ladybird, visited Mackinaw Island, Ed assisted the secret service in protecting her. Most importantly, Ed received his bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University at age 49.
Ed adored golfing and was a 36 year member of Marquette Golf and Country Club. Ed was also a member of the American Legion Post #44 and the Michigan Sheriffs Association.
Ed was especially devoted to his grandchildren. He taught them many things, including how to ski, golf, and drive the golf cart.
Ed was the beloved husband of Dorothy (nee Cameron) for 53 years. Loving Dad of Steven (Diane), Laurie Hill-Leece, Melanie (Will) Jones, Cameron Deirdre and Kathryn (Brent) Chapman. Proud Grandpa of Elena (Giovan) Claros, Tara, Cameron, William, Dessa, and Abbie and adoring great-grandfather of Jasmine. Dear brother of Bill (Alice), Elsie Heer, Aileen Hutala, Alma Humphries, and Minerva Johnson. Further survived by brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
There will be services for Ed at 4:30 P.M. at the Holiday Inn in Marquette. A celebration of Ed's life will take place following the services.
Florence L. (Thomas) Boyd
ALPENA, MI -- Florence L. (Thomas) Boyd, 74, of Alpena, and former Marquette resident, entered eternal life Monday, February 26, 2001, in Zephyrhills, FL where she and her husband were spending the winter. She was born March 24, 1926 in Oshkosh, WI, a daughter of the late Roy and Marie (Woodman-Tufts) Steves, and was raised in Ashland, WI. Florence was a graduate of the Julliard School of Music, sang opera professionally, taught, and was a concert pianist. She and her former husband, Robert "Bob" Thomas, resided in Marquette for many years, where she was an active member of the Marquette Moose Lodge Auxiliary, sang in the choir of St. Peter Cathedral, was employed at the former Union National Bank, and attended St. Christopher Catholic Church. Following her marriage
to Bob Thomas, she later married Chet Boyd and they resided in Marquette for a couple of years before moving to Alpena. A devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother and great-grandmother, and sister, she is survived by: her husband, Chet Boyd of Alpena; three daughters, Cindy (Dan) Fassbender of Marquette, Charlene (Doug) Thennes of Manistique, and Roberta (William) Smigelski of Alpena; a son, Ted Thomas of Marquette; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Priscilla Steves of Federal Way, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents and former husband, Bob Thomas. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated this evening, Monday, March 19, in St. Christopher Catholic Church at 6:30 pm with Rev. Msgr. Peter Oberto and Rev. Alexander Sample, concelebrating. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.
Richard Daniel Fischer
NEENAH -- Richard Daniel Fischer age 9 days, infant son of Richard Jr. and Stacy (Krieg) Fischer died Wednesday, March 14, 2001 at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Ricky battled through four heart surgeries to repair various congenital birth defects of his heart before succumbing to these conditions. He will be sadly missed by all of those who had a chance to know him.
Ricky is survived by his loving parents, Rick and Stacy Fischer; grandparents, Richard (Sharon) Fischer and Dan (Mindy) Krieg; two aunts, Laura Fischer and Sara Krieg; and uncle Dan Krieg. He will also be greatly missed by great grandparents, Syl (Jane)
Fischer, Bob (Marge) King, Daniel (Sylvia) Krieg and Clifford (Ailene) Premeau; great great grandmother, Viola Premeau; many special great aunts and uncles and numerous cousins
A memorial service will be l1:00 AM Monday, March 19, 2001 at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, 537 North Superior Street, Appleton with Pastor Mark Weiss officiating. Friends and family will be received on Monday at the Funeral Home from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established to help offset the many medical expenses that were incurred.

Waino A. Jestila
BARAGA --Waino A. Jestila, 87 of Baraga passed away Saturday March 17, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital. He had been in ill health for several months. Mr. Jestila was born January 6, 1914 in Mohawk, MI, the son of the late Charles and Lydia (Piippo) Jestila.
He attended schools in Mohawk and Baraga. On August 16, 1935, he married the former Rose Mary Vizina in Baraga. She preceded him in death in 1977. Waino worked in several local sawmills and engaged in farming. He then went to work for Pettibone corporation, working as a steel cutter until his retirement in 1968. He was a member of the Dads of V.F.W. members Post 4090 in Portland, Michigan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid gardner in his leisure time.
Mr. Jestila is survived by a son Ronald (Alyce) Jestila of Baraga, daughter Shirley (John) Dorsky of Portland, MI; 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. Also surviving is a sister Marian Muljo of Mohawk, MI, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was a grandson, five brothers and a sister.
Funeral services for Mr. Jestila will be held Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at 2 p.m. from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse. Pastor Michael Laakko will officiate and spring burial will take place in the Baraga Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the funeral chapel. Following the service, friends are invited to join the family in the Harrington Gathering Room, located at the funeral chapel for fellowship and a luncheon. Arrangements are under the direction of the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse.
William M. "Bill" Reynolds
MARQUETTE -- William M. "Bill" Reynolds, 75, of 423 Hampton Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday afternoon, March 17, 2001, at the D. J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans following a lengthy illness. He had resided at the Jacobetti Home since August 2000. He was born November 5, 1925 in Marquette, a son of the late William A. and Alvira (Baker) Reynolds, and was a 1943 graduate of the Graveraet High School. Following graduation, Bill entered the US Army, serving during World War II with the l09th General Hospital organization, attaining the rank of Corporal. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Marquette where he married Arlene A. Brisson on November 22, 1947 in St. Peter Cathedral. Bill was employed for twelve years as a mechanic with Ted Fulsher Motors. He later worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for Spear and Sons Lumber Company for thirteen years and then with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for over twenty-three years, retiring in 1989. Bill was a very devoted family man who also
enjoyed going to hunting camp each year with his buddies, tinkering with his cars, and gardening. He also spent many happy days at "Uncle" Fred Brisson's camp on Big Shag Lake, and enjoyed the weekly car rides into the countryside that were provided the last few years by friends, Clarence "Buzz" Brisson and Nancy Paavola. Bill was a member of St. Peter Cathedral. A loving husband, father, and brother, he is survived by: his wife of 53 years, Arlene; two sons, Bruce (Kathy) Reynolds of Sussex, WI, and Robert Reynolds of Marquette; a sister, Joyce (Ray) Olson of Marquette and South Padre Island, TX; a sister-in-law, Jean (Ed) Hermanson of Marquette; special "Uncle", Fred Brisson of Marquette; special friends, Clarence "Buzz" Brisson and Nancy Paavola both of Marquette; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by an infant son, John Reynolds in 1950; and his infant sister, Jewel Reynolds. Bartley Bittner
ESCANABA -- Bartley Bittner, age 81 of 1401 North 23rd Street, Escanaba, died Sunday afternoon, March 18, 2001 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born February 11, 1920 to Gustav and Clara (Hanson) Bittner, he was raised in the Ford River and Schaffer areas. On June 10, 1944, he married the former Catherine Brayak at St. George's Church in Bark River. Katie preceded him in death on January 25, 1974.
Mr. Bittner worked on the family farm and for area loggers as a young man. He later owned and operated the White Birch Tavern and Bittner's Cash Market. He retired from Bichler Gravel and Concrete and also was employed as a bus driver for the Gladstone Area Public Schools for 24 years. He previously worked for the Delta County Road Commission, Marvic Construction Company and Potvins Bar in Schaffer.
He was a member of the Holy Family Parish in Flat Rock, the Croatian Fraternal Union, Northland Associated Grocers, Teamster Local 328, and a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hyde.
Bartley enjoyed being with his family and friends. In his leisure time, he enjoyed dancing, gardening, helping and visiting others.
He is survived by: 1 son, Dennis (Sally) Bittner, Escanaba, 2 daughters, Bonnie (Charles) Crotty, Marquette, Colleen (Dan) Sullivan, Durham, NC, 2 loving grandchildren, Catherine Crotty, Winona, MN, Mark (Angela) Bittner, Florida, 1 great grandson, Tyler Bittner, Florida, 2 sisters, Hazel Guindon, Rapid River, Betty Johnston, Selma, CA, special friend & sister in law Marilyn Brayak, Escanaba, 3 sisters-in-law, Laurene Bittner and Lennea Bittner, Salem, CA, Patricia Mikolijczyk, Vulcan, MI, 2 brothers-in-law, Thomas Brayak, Bark River, John Brayak, Escanaba, several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
Preceding Bartley in death besides his parents and beloved wife, Catherine, were his brothers Glen, Harry, Walter and Herman and sisters, Pearl Brassick, Gertrude A. Ramage, Mildred Furo, Dorothy Bergstrom and Lorraine DeMille.
Bartley's family invites all family and friends to the visitation at the Allo Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with Parish Prayers at 8:00 p.m. The Knights of Columbus will stand in honor guard during the visitation and at Barley's Funeral Mass. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Con-celebrated by Rev. Father Raymond Cotter and Rev. Father Michael Steber on Thursday, at Holy Family Church in Flat Rock at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Nels Gustav Mattson
TRENARY -- Nels Gustav Mattson, age 90, of Trenary, died on Sunday, March 18, 2001 at 1:55 a.m. at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on June 6, 1910 in Portom, Finland to the late Gustav adn Lydia Mattson. They moved to Manistique where he had attended school. His father died, when Nels was young and he went to work in a local grocery store to help support his family. He had moved to Munising and married Vienna Marie Laurila in 1941. She preceded him in death on July 31, 1967. Nels worked as a meat cutter at the Munising Co-op for years. Some time after moving to Trenary, Nels cut meat at the Chatham Co-op and retired from there in 1975. He had married Nelma "Sally" DeLisle in 1967, and she also preceded him in death on March 17, 1990. Nels was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Trenary, the Trenary Lions, and the Munising Moose Lodge. He had enjoyed painting and golfing, and he was able to take a trip in 1992 to Hawaii to witness the marriage of his only son, Mel to his wife Carol.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mel and Carol (Schmidt) Mattson of Brookfield, WI, two sisters, Nina Orr of Escanaba/ Manistique and Nigella Noe of Beaver Dam, WI, and numerous nieces and nephews. Nels was also preceded in death by his brother, Kurt Mattson.
A memorial service will be conducted by Lay minister Kathleen Godec of the First Lutheran Church of Trenary on Thursday, March 22, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Chapel in Munising. Interment will be next to his wife, Vienna, in the Mathias Township Cemetery in Trenary.
Vera M. Grubba
NEWBERRY -- Vera M. Grubba, 85, of Newberry, died at the Luce County Annex on Sunday, March 18, 2001.
Born on April 22, 1915 in Detroit, she was the daughter of the late John & Florence (Williams) Black, She graduated from Clio High School. She married Arthur Grubba in Detroit on September 25, 1937. He preceded her in on May 24, 1978. Vera was employed as a Dietary Aide for Helen Newberry Joy Hospital until her retirement in April of 1978. Along with her husband, Vera is preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Rita Grubba, and a sister June Nadjkovic.
Vera is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Robert "Bud" (Gloria) Grubba, of Newberry and daughters and sons-in-law M. "Fran" (Robert) Edwards, and Dottie (Paul) Kopera, all of Newberry, and Kathy (Dennis) Williams of McMillan. 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren with 2 more expected soon, and a 1/2 sister the former Esther Martin of Lake Orion.

Arnold Haglund
STEPHENSON -- Arnold Haglund, age 90, of Stephenson passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2001 in Stephenson. He was born September 26, 1910 in Skandia, Michigan. In 1936, he married Mabel Koepp. He later married Gladys Kjellman and she preceded him in death. Then in 1962 he married Marion Lofgren, and she survives him. Arnold worked as an agriculture agent in Chatham, Michigan for a number of years. He was a member of the Stephenson United Methodist Church. He graduated from Eben High School in 1929, and later attended Agriculture School in Menominee for 2 years.
Survivors include: his wife Marion of Stephenson, 2 Sons: David (Maila) Haglund of Skandia, MI and Arnold William Haglund of Ann Arbor, MI, 1 foster son: Raymond Beyers of Armstrong Creek, WI, 3 Sisters: Mildred Brigman of Marquette, MI, Elsie (Carl) Johnston of Skandia, MI and Esther (Bill) Thompson of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, 2 Brothers: Roger Haglund of Skandia, MI and Vernon C. (Elsie) Haglund of Skandia, MI, 10 Grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. Mabel Koepp of Marquette, MI.
Arnold was preceded in death by 1 stepson Bud Lofgren, 1 sister Edith Johnson, 2 brothers Alan and Rudolph.
Funeral services Friday, March 23, 2001 at 1PM at Stephenson Untied Methodist Church in Stephenson. Visitation at the church from 11 AM until the service hour with Reverend Russ Tillotson officiating. Burial will be in Haglund Cemetery, Skandia, MI. Graveside services will be held in the spring.

MARINETTE, WI -- Marion M. Whiffen, 90, of 831 Pine Beach Road, Marinette, Wisconsin, died Saturday evening, March 10, 2001, at the Luther Home. Mother of Shirley (William) Rushford, of Menominee, Michigan and Ronald (Audrey) Whiffen of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Luther Home Chapel, Marinette. Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home of Marinette, Wisconsin, served the family.
Mrs. Anna M. Barnhart
HANCOCK -- Mrs. Anna M. Barnhart, 79 of Quincy Street in Hancock, died at the Norlite Nursing Center in Marquette, on Monday, March 19, 2001. She was born in Hancock on June 16, 1921, a daughter of the late Narcisse and Eva (Fourneir) Ruelle. She attended St. Joseph's School and then Hancock High School. Later she was employed at the Lincoln Cafe and the Service Shop Cleaners.
On August 20, 1946 she was married to Charles M. Barnhart at the St. Joseph's Church Rectory by the Rev. D. J. Breault. Charles died on February 21, 1989.
She was a member of the church of the Resurrection in Hancock and it's Altar Society. She was also a member of and past president of the St. Anne's Society, and past secretary of the legion of Mary Mother of Unity Praesidium. She also belonged to the X-Y-Z Senior Citizens Club of Hancock and was a member of the Circle of Love Prayer Group.
Besides her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by 2 sons; 2 brothers; Paul and Emery Ruelle, and by a sister, Marie Hinkle.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann Marie (Burt) Colombo of Marquette; 3 sons: Paul (Brenda) of Harvey, James (Linda) of Chaska, MN.,, and Michael (Bonnie) of Lake Charles, LA.; 10 grandchildren: Jeff, Cory, Kelly, Carrie, Jacob, Ryan, Katie, Kurtes, Charles and Michael; 2 great grandchildren, Mattie and Mason; a sister, Blanche Hocking of Hancock; and by nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 A.M. on Thursday at the Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Fr. Wayne Marcotte to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Hancock's Lakeside Cemetery.
Friends may call at the O'Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock on Wednesday from 6 until 8 P.M. where a parish prayer service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Visitation will also be held an hour before services at the church on Thursday. Vickie M. (O'Neill) Koepp
MENOMINEE -- Vickie M. (O'Neill) Koepp, 42, 4302 10th St., Menominee, former area resident died suddenly at 12:28 PM on Monday, March 19, 2001 at the Bay Area Medical Center Marinette, WI.
Vickie was born January 10, 1959 in Marquette to John & Anne (LaMere) O'Neill. She worked as a factory worker in the Menominee area. Vickie enjoyed spending time with her children and friends in her spare time. She will be missed most by her family and remembered best for her loving and caring compassion towards others.
Surviving are her husband Gene Keopp, Menominee, 1 son; Michael Higgins, Menominee, 1 daughter, Christine Higgins, Menominee, her mother, Anne (LaMere) Bengry, Ishpeming, her step-father, Chauncey Frederick Bengry, Ishpeming, 2 brothers; John (Nancy) O'Neill, Ishpeming, Daniel O'Neill, Negaunee, 2 step-brothers; Russell (Deborah) Williams, Marquette, Jay (Merry) Bengry, Negaunee, her grandfather; Alvin LaMere, Negaunee, 2 nephews, John O'Neill & Mitchell O'Neill both of Negaunee, several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, John O'Neill Sr., grandmother, Gertrude LaMere, and her grandmother & grandfather O'Neill.

William E. "Bill" Brangar
ISHPEMING -- William E. "Bill" Brangar, age 52, of 41 Sunnyside Estates, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital Emergency Room of an apparent heart attack.
Bill was born July 11, 1948 in Ferndale, MI to the late William J. and Mary A. (Wheeler) Brangar. He was a graduate of the Madison High School in Madison Heights, MI and attended Michigan Technological University and Oakland Community College. Bill served in the United States Marine Corps. He worked for the past 26 years for the C.C.I. Co. at the Empire Mine as a rotary drill operator. He enjoyed the time spent camping in the summers.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Carol Brangar of Ishpeming; a son- Kevin (Tricia) Brangar of Grand Rapids, MI; a daughter Bridget Seelen of Ishpeming; a granddaughter Kaitlyn Seelen of Ishpeming; 2 sisters- Leslie (Arthur) Tennant of Leonard, MI and Michele (Frank) Bommarito of Oxford, MI along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter Kristi Brangar in 1978.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, March 22, 2001 at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki and Rev. C. Bruce Ulstad to officiate.
Friends may call at the Bethel Lutheran Church from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Thursday.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Brangar, Terry Hintsala, Michael Sihtala, and Gordon Lehtola.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Church memorial fund.
The Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangement.
