Alyce E. Gadomski
lSHPEMING - Alyce E. Gadomski, age 81, formerly of 503 E. Ridge St., Ishpeming passed away Wednesday March 21, 2001 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she had been a resident for the past 4 years.
Alyce was born February 23, 1920 in Ishpeming to the late Charles & Ida (Anderson) Swahn. She was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School. She moved to Chicago in the late 1940's and resided there until 1954 when she came back to Ishpeming. She worked as a bookkeeper for Hebbard Rambler and Narotzky Motors in Ishpeming prior to her employment with Northern Michigan University as an Accountant Bookkeeper.
Alyce was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, having been involved with the Ladies Guild, the Soup Luncheons, and for many years she set the church up for Sunday & Wednesday services. She was a member of the Blue Notes Booster Club and was formerly active in the Thursday Night Womens Bowling League in Ishpeming.
Survivors include a son David (Diane) Gadomski of Ishpeming; 2 grandsons Chad & Todd Gadomski both of Phoenix, AZ; a niece and 3 nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters - Helen Swahn and Ruth Sjoholm and 2 brothers - Carl & Gordon Swahn.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00PM on Friday March 23, 2001 at the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ilene Mattson to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Trinity Lutheran Church from 4 until 7 PM on Friday.
Pallbearers will be Gene "Sonny" Johnson, Lee Sjoholm, Glenn Sjoholm and Curt Sjoholm.

Arnold Haglund
STEPHENSON -- Arnold Haglund, age 90, of Stephenson passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2001 in Stephenson. He was born September 26, 1910 in Skandia, Michigan to the late Anna (Lindeblad) and August Haglund. In 1936, he married Mabel Koepp. He later married Gladys Kjellman and she preceded him in death. Then in 1962 he married Marion Lofgren, and she survives him. Arnold worked as an agriculture agent in Chatham, Michigan for a number of years. He was a member of the Stephenson United Methodist Church. He graduated from Eben High School in 1929, and later attended Agriculture School in Menominee for 2 years.
Survivors include: his wife Marion of Stephenson, 2 Sons: David (Maila) Haglund of Skandia, MI and Arnold William Haglund of Ann Arbor, MI, 1 foster son: Raymond Beyers of Armstrong Creek, WI, 3 Sisters: Mildred Brigman of Marquette, MI, Elsie (Carl) Johnston of Skandia, MI and Esther (Bill) Thompson of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, 2 Brothers: Roger Haglund of Skandia, MI and Vernon C. (Elsie) Haglund of Skandia, MI, 10 Grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. Mabel Koepp of Marquette, MI.
Arnold was preceded in death by 1 stepson Bud Lofgren, 1 sister Edith Johnson, 2 brothers Alan and Rudolph.
Funeral services Friday, March 23, 2001 at 1PM at Stephenson Untied Methodist Church in Stephenson. Visitation at the church from 11 AM until the service hour with Reverend Russ Tillotson officiating. Burial will be in Haglund Cemetery, Skandia, MI. Graveside services will be held in the spring.
A memorial fund has been established for Stephenson United Methodist Church and/or Emanuel Lutheran Church of Skandia, MI Cemetery Fund.

Betty Ann Schierschmidt
VAN MEER -- Betty Ann Schierschmidt, age 69, Of N6795 County Road H-15, Van Meer, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at 3:50 a.m. at the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique. She was born on August 20, 1931 in Munising to the late Lee and Zera (Moyer) St. Andrew. Betty Ann graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1951. On July 7, 1951, she married Harold G. Schierschmidt. They moved to Wisconsin and lived in Milwaukee, Cudahay, and Waukesha. While living in Waukesha, Betty Ann worked packing orders for the catalog division of J.C. Penncy. They returned to the Upper Peninsula and bought the old Crosby farm in Van Meer. Betty Ann and Harold raised their seven children and both worked on the farm. They sold milk and she helped with the cows, chickens, horses and pigs. She worked as a cook for a couple of seasons at the Pictured Rocks Golf and Country Club and then at the Bear Trap. Betty Ann retired from the Bear Trap, but then had an opportunity to cook for the local Head Start Program. She couldn't resist working with the young children. She loved the kids and her job and the children loved her, referring to her as "Gramma Betty." Betty Ann was a family person. She loved spending time with and doing things for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and anyone that had a need. One of her children complimented her as the "Proverbial Grandmother."
She enjoyed crocheting and knitting and she always looked forward to knitting a special sweater or blanket for new babies. Each Christmas, her grandchildren could look forward to new hats, mittens, and socks that she had made for each of them. One of her latest passions was sending and receiving e-mails on her computer. She loved to keep in touch and looked forward to hearing what was happening in the lives ol her family and friends. Betty Ann loved to have fun and play games. She and two of her grandchildrcn, Angela and Michael, had Phase 10 card game challenges all winter long.
She enjoyed dancing and was willing to try any new dance at a wedding reception, including the Alligator or Chicken. She was known as Mrs. Loon for her CB handle and she enjoyed traveling when she could. She was able to travel with family and friends to
California, Las Vegas, and Nashville. Betty Ann loved clowns and had a wonderful clown collection. She had a great reputation as a good cook and whenever her children would come home to visit, she would treat them with outstanding homemade pancakes and syrup. Betty Ann was a wonderful woman who loved her family, always making them her priority.

Ellen L. Nordeen
GWINN -- Ellen L. Nordeen, 85, of 210 W. Iron Street, Gwinn, died Monday, March 19, 2001 at Norlite Nursing Center Marquette where she had been a patient for six weeks.
She was born in Ishpeming on May 30, 1915 to the late Thomas and Marie (Yrjala) Kaaijala. Ellen was a very active member of Grace Lutheran Church where she served on the Altar Society and quilting circle. She enjoyed her grandchildren and being at the lake at the home of her daughter.
Surviving are one daughter: Bethel (Donald) Nyquist of Gwinn, one son: Thomas (Sandy) Nordeen of Wayne, MI, six grandchildren: Kim Baumann, Scott Nyquist, Bruce Nyquist, Beth Guevara, Kelli Nordeen, and Sara Nordeen and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar, in 1979 and several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 24, 2001, at 12:00 noon at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. George Kaiser officiating. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10:00am until the time of services. Lillian J. Haupt
NEGAUNEE -- Lillian J. Haupt, age 92, formerly of 98 Croix St., Negaunee, died at 5:40 PM on Tuesday, March 20, 001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where she had been a patient since 1995.
Lillian was born Jan. 14, 1909 in Negaunee to Matt & Tilda Niemi, was a lofelong resident and was a homemaker.
Mrs. Haupt was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Negaunee. She greatly enjoyed her grandchildren & great grandchildren. Her hobbies included knitting, shopping, car rides, being outdoors & dancing. She loved the farm & animals.
Surviving are 2 sons, Clayton (Mary) Haupt, Taylor, MI, William (Sandra) Haupt, Negaunee Township, 3 grandchildren; David (Sherie) Haupt, Jeremy Haupt & Maria Haupt, 3 great grandchildren; Christopher, Steven & Tabitha Haupt, several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Judge William Haupt in 1968, a sister Helen Havelin, and brothers William, Matt & Onie.
Funeral Services will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Laurel Halvorson Bernard, pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.

Marvin W. Swarthwood
ISHPEMING -- Marvin W. Swarthwood, age 58, of 4350 Stoneville Rd. Ishpeming died Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack.
Marvin was born January 20, 1943 in Owosso, MI to the late Wayne & Viola (Nolph) Sworthwood. He graduated from Corunna High School and served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force, being stationed at the K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, during the Vietnam Conflict. Marvin worked for the C.C.I. Mining Company for 31 years at the Empire & Tilden Mines retiring as a shovel operator in 1998.
Marvin was a member & Past Exalted Ruler of the Ishpeming ELKS Lodge #447 where he currently was serving as a trustee. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church & the AMVETS. Marvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening & enjoyed raising horses.
Marvin is survived by his wife, whom he married July 10, 1965, Judy (Sleeman) Swarthwood of Ishpeming, a son U.S. A.F. M.SGT. James (Katie) Swarthwood of Ramstein, Germany, a daughter Kristi Swarthwood of Indianapolis, IN, a sister Donna (LaVere) Kingsbury of Lennon, MI, a brother Gary (Carole) Sworthwood of Champaign, IL, brother in law James & Olivia Sleeman of Negaunee, sister in law Cecile Sleeman of Ishpeming, numerous nieces & nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 26, 2001 at the Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Virginia Peacock officiating.

Vickie M. (O'Neill) Koepp
MENOMINEE -- Vickie M. (O'Neill) Koepp, 42, 4302 10th St., Menominee, former area resident died suddenly at 12:28 PM on Monday, March 19, 2001 at the Bay Area Medical Center Marinette, WI.
Vickie was born January 10, 1959 in Marquette to John & Anne (LaMere) O'Neill. She worked as a factory worker in the Menominee area. Vickie enjoyed spending time with her children and friends in her spare time. She will be missed most by her family and remembered best for her loving and caring compassion towards others.
Surviving are her husband Gene Keopp, Menominee, 1 son; Michael Higgins, Menominee, 1 daughter, Christine Higgins, Menominee, her mother, Anne (LaMere) Bengry, Ishpeming, her step-father, Chauncey Frederick Bengry, Ishpeming, 2 brothers; John (Nancy) O'Neill, Ishpeming, Daniel O'Neill, Negaunee, 2 step-brothers; Russell (Deborah) Bengry, Marquette, Jay (Merry) Bengry, Negaunee, her grandfather; Alvin LaMere, Negaunee, 2 nephews, John O'Neill & Mitchell O'Neill both of Negaunee, several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, John O'Neill Sr., grandmother, Gertrude LaMere, and her grandmother & grandfather O'Neill.

James N. Epper
MARQUETTE -- James N. Epper, 88, formerly of 711 Grove St., died Friday, March 23, 2001 in the Norlite Nursing Center where he had been a resident the past four years.
He was born December 31, 1912 in Marquette to Peter and Ella (Thorpe) Epper and had lived here all his life. Prior to retiring he worked as a driver for the Texaco Oil Company for 30 years. He was a member of St. Peter's Cathedral and a deeply devoted family man.
James is survived by four granddaughters; Sharon "Sue" (John) Wassberg, Linda (Randy) Johnson, Bonnie (John) Ragusett, and Betty Smith, four grandsons; James "Alfie" Maki, Scott (Deb) Epper, Donald (Stephanie) Epper Jr. and David (Stephanie) Epper, two sisters; Martha Albas of Detroit and Marie Thomas of Marquette, many great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bertha (1975), a daughter Betty Ann Maki, a son Donald James Epper, brothers Peter, Ted, Joseph, Lawrence and Robert Epper, and sisters Leona Banning, Lucille Beaudry and Betty Fissette.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, March 26, 2001 in the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with Monsignior Louis Cappo officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 11:00 AM on Monday.

John B. Dighera III
NEGAUNEE -- John B. Dighera III, age 27, of 212 Teal Lake Ave., Negaunee, died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 22, 2001.
John was born June 12, 1973 in Escanaba. He was a life long Negaunee area resident and a graduate of Negaunee High School class of 1992.
John was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, and was a member of the local Bricklayers Union. In his free time, John was an avid outdoorsman who loved to spend time at the U.P. Club. In addition to his love for the outdoors, he enjoyed collecting rocks of all types to add to his extensive rock collection.
Surviving are his parents; John (Dell) Dighera, Neg, 1 Sister; JoAnn (James) Tadgerson, Neg, his fiance; Cecilia Latourneu, Neg, her 2 sons; Charlie & John, 2 nephews; Austin & Hayden Tadgerson, Neg, and many aunts, uncles & cousins.

Paula J. Popko-Barsch
MARQUETTE -- Paula J. Popko-Barsch, age 39, of 950 Highland Dr., Marquette died unexpectedly at her home on March 21, 2001.
Paula was born August 25, 1961 in Wakefield, MI to Eugene & Pauline (Mussatti) Popko. She was a life long area resident and a graduate of Negaunee High School class of 1979. After completing High School she attended Marquette General Hospital School of Radiology for her Register of Radiology Technology License. Following this she attended Gogebic Community College where she received her Licensed Practical Nurse degree. Paula finished school by receiving her Registered Nurse degree from Bay De Noc Community College.
In her spare time Paula was an avid outdoors person who loved backpacking, snowshoeing, and skiing.

Mary L. Cornish
ISHPEMING -- Mary L. Cornish, age 68 of 613 N. Main St. Ishpeming passed away on Saturday March 24, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital.
Mary was born July 27, 1932 in Ishpmeing to Mary (Valintino) and the late Ercole Arcari. She was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1950. Mary was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, and the Paisano Club. Mary sang with the Choraleers and Allegro groups and was an avid supporter of the Ishpeming Hematite Athletics, and the Green Bay Packers.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years Charles W. Cornish of Ishpeming; her mother Mary Arcari of Ishpeming; two daughters - Kim Cornish of Negaunee and Jill (Dennis) Dompierre of Negaunee; two sons Scott Cornish of Sault Ste. Marie, MI and Curt Cornish of Ishpeming; a sister Margaret Bach of Woodstock, IL along with several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday March 27, 2001 at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Peter Oberto to officiate. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
