Joan Mitchell
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. -- Joan Elaine Tislove Mitchell, age 84, of Scottsdale, Ariz., a former resident of Ishpeming, died on Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Scottsdale. She was born on September 18, 1916, to Ole Tislov and Julia (Flack) Tislov in Ishpeming. Elaine graduated from Ishpeming High School, where she excelled as a student and as a singer, often performing at weddings and other public occasions. After graduating in 1935, she worked at Levine's Department Store and Kirkish's Boot Shop in Ishpeming.
She married Charles A. "Chas" Mitchell on December 5, 1936, in Republic.
Most of Elaine's 64 years of married life focused on her husband Chas and her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She worked briefly at the Better Business Bureau in Milwaukee, Wisc., but her talents were exercised in the four areas she enjoyed most: the church, golf, bridge, and reading. She was a frequent soloist in church, taught Sunday school, and served in several leadership roles in churches in every community in which she lived. Her passion for golf began when she and Chas moved to Ishpeming in 1961, and included serving president of the Women's league at Wawonowin. An accomplished bridge player, Elaine was the first Duplicate Bridge Director in the entire Upper Peninsula and was regarded as both an authority and an advocate for the demanding challenge of Duplicate Bridge. A voracious reader, she cherished her time as a member of the Ishpeming Reading Club.
Elaine is survived by son, Charles (Marilyn) Mitchell, Jr. of Green Valley, Ariz., and Castle Rock Lake, Wisc.; twin sons, Steven (Suzie) Mitchell of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Dr. Peter (Rebecca) Mitchell of Albion, Mich.; grandchildren, Cynthia (Richard) Potter of DeForest, Wisc., Melissa (Charles) Goldman of Hingham., Mass., Stephanie Mitchell of Charleston, S.C., Justin Singer of West Bloomfield, and Peter J.E. Mitchell of Albion; great-grandchildren, Maxwell and Jacob Goldman of Hingham, and Nicholas Potter of DeForest; brother George F. Michigan Home for Veterans in Marquette.
Mickey was born May 8, 1927 in Marenisco, MI to the late Earl & Elsie (Russell) Bishop. He grew up in the Marenisco area until 1950 at which time he moved to Ishpeming. He served in the United States Army during World War II where he received the Victory Medal.
Mickey worked for Inland Steel at the Morris Mine and later became self employed as an auto mechanic owning Bishop's Auto. He was a member of the Steel Workers Union- Local 4950, on which softball team he played for. Mickey was an avid music lover, who had the talents of playing many musical instruments.
Mickey is survived by 5 children: Laurinda M. Bishop of Neenah, WI, Mickey Bishop Jr. of Neenah, WI, Rickey Bishop of Iron Mountain, Cindy (Tom) Simula of Ishpeming and Nancy (Ken) Lindstrom of Negaunee, 2 sisters: Lola Artwich of Marquette and Delores (Jim) Budjick of Wakefield, MI, 11 grandchildren: Shawn & Troy Tyynismaa, Tim & Mary Mae Bishop, Crystal & Shannon Simula, Kristi (Bishop) Korpi, Gwynne Bishop, Michelle, Chad & Tammie Lindstrom, 3 great grandchildren: Alex Long, Andy & Kaitlyn Tyynismaa, special niece Melinda "Mickey" Blanchard along with several other nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Esther, a son Roy, 3 sisters & a brother.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, March 30, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. Burial will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 12:00 noon until the time of service.
Clara L. Swanson
ISHPEMING -- Clara L. Swanson, age 90, fommerly of Ishpeming, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 200l, under the loving care of the staff at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she had resided for the past four and a half years.
Clara was bom September 30, 1910, in Ishpeming to Marit (Michigan North Florida, for many years, and she was a founding member of the Marco Island Shell Club.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Norman Andrew of Ishpeming; two grandsons, Richard (Karen) Andrew of Brighton, MI, and Robert Andrew of St. Joseph, MI; a sister Lois (Robert) Watters of Ishpeming; a sister-in-law, Ida Santamore, of Ishpeming; a brother-in-law, Iner (Lois) Swanson, of Lakeland, FI,, a lifelong special friend, Evelyn Blewett of Ishpeming, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of nearly 50 years,
Harry C. Swanson, in l984; and her brothers Alfred and Melvin Lee.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, April 2, 2001 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ishpeming, with Pastor Ilene Mattson officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons Richard and Robert Andrew, nephews Douglas Lee and Jon and Paul Watters.
Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Sunday and from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service on Monday at the Church.
Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Damos Stetter
SARALAND, AL -- Mr. Damos Stetter, a native of Hubbel, Michigan.
Mr. Stetter was preceded in death by one son, Duane Stetter. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Carolyn McGee Stetter; one daughter, Nadine Weitermann, of Hartford, Wisconsin, and Jim Stetter of Alabama.

Gloria P. Carter
ISHPEMING -- Gloria P. Carter, age 77, of 648 Park Street, Ishpeming died peacefully at her home in the care of her family on Thursday, March 29, 2001 after a lengthy illness.
Gloria was born in Ishpeming on September 15, 1923 to the late Razaine and Anne (Ayotte) Pepin. She was a lifelong resident of Ishpeming, attending Parochial School until 8th grade, and graduated from the Ishpeming High School in 1940. She married Clifton G. Carter of Ishpeming; her seven grandchildren- Sarah and her husband Roger Riutta of Marquette, Rebecca, Robert and Bradley Waters and Jason, Clifton and Jamie Kentucky. After the flood of 1926, the family suffered many losses of home, business, sickness and deaths of children. They moved to Redwine, KY and his mother suffered a mental breakdown and was put into a sanitarium in Lexington, KY. The rest of his family moved to Moorehead, KY. From there they went to Sharonville, NC, Lisa Marie (Daniel) Singer of Highland, MI, and Tammy Sue Monhead of Munising; 10 grandchildren - Michael, Samantha, James, Emily, Daniel, Tabitha, Luke, Sarah, Shian, and Frankie Lynn; mother - Agnes Gamelin of Munising; mother-in-law - Betty Monhead of Skandia; brothers & sisters - Jim (Patti) Gamelin of Munising, Richard " Red" (Linda) Gamelin of Conway, AR, Mary Jo (Roger) Washam of Mayflower, AR, Patricia (Bill) Whittaker of Graycort, SC, Bonnie Mannisto of Munising, Bob (Barb) Gamelin of Munising, and Tom Gamelin of Mayflower, AR; lifelong friend Mary Jean Humphrey of Shingleton, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Judy was preceded in death by her father Louis James "Crow" Gamelin, Sr. and her grandparents.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Monday evening from 5:00 until 9:00. The funeral will be conducted by Father Dennis L. Borca on Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Munising.
Luke Elmer Forsberg
MARQUETTE -- Luke Elmer Forsberg, 75, formerly of 310 Whetstone, Marquette, entered eternal life Wednesday evening, March 28, 2001, at the Richmond Residential Care Center in Palmer. Luke had been a Marquette resident since 1980, previously residing in the Perkins, Chatham and Trenary areas. Private services with burial in the Perkins Cemetery were held. The Fassbender Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Noel C. Burns
BIG BAY -- Noel C. Burns, 63, of 100 Deutsch Street, Big Bay, entered eternal life Friday evening, March 30, 2001, shortly after admittance to Marquette General Hospital. He had been in ill health for many years.
He was born February 28, 1938 in Marquette, a son of the late Forrest E. and Anne (Harju) Burns, was raised in Big Bay, and was a 1956 graduate of the John D. Pierce High School. Following graduation, he moved to Howell, where he was employed in maintenance. He served in the US Army from 1958 to 1960 and then returned to Howell where he was employed at the State Hospital as a nurse attendant. On December 21, 1962 he married Helen Jean Bullock and the couple set about establishing a home and raising a family. Noel later worked for Detroit Edison as a power plant operator.
In 1969 he rehired into the State of Michigan University as a power plant operator, retiring in 1995 due to disability. In his younger years he was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and serving as a ham radio operator. His recent interests included watching TV sports, particularly college sports, and birdwatching.
Survivors include: his wife, Helen Jean; daughter, Beth Anne Burns of Big Bay; four sons, Gregory Noel Burns of Big Bay, Matthew Henry (Kim) Burns of Novi, Mark Charles Burns of Marquette, and Dale Lee (Rebecca) Burns of Plainwell; his grandson, Aaron Christopher Burns; two brothers, Dennis (Carole) Burns and Forrest A. (Iris) Burns both of Big Bay; two nieces, four nephews, several great nieces and nephews; and his faithful canine companion, Harley.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Monday from 5 to 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday afternoon, April 3, at 3 pm in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Big Bay with Rev. James Challancin as celebrant.
Pallbearers will be: Scott Burns, Sr., Daniel DeForest, William Burns, Michael Burns, Joe Mattson, and Jim Inch. Spring burial will be made in the Powell Township Cemetery in Big Bay.
Diane I. Grau
INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Diane I. Grau (nee Isotalo), age 53, of Indiana died April 1, 2001.
Diane was the Assistant Office Manager for St. Mary's Childcare Center and was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Diane is survived by her husband, Allen J. Grau; 2 sons, Jacob A. Grau and Anthony W. Grau; her mother, Corine Baldini; 2 sisters, Carol Park and Bonnie Gravedoni; and 2 brothers, Bruce Isotalo and John Isotalo.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 5692 Central Ave.
Calling hours are 4-8 PM Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at Flanner & Buchanan Broad Ripple Mortuary in Michigan. Dorothy was the mother of Barbara (Mrs. Henry A.) Frost of North Scituate, MA, and William Grant Pendill of Chicago, the grandmother of Peter and Andrew Frost and Richard, George and David Pendill, and the great grandmother of four.
Dorothy Pendill was born in Oak Park, IL and graduated from the Oak Park River Forest High School in 1918 with honors in English Literature. She attended the University of Chicago where she majored in Political Science. She considered herself a homemaker but was active in the community as president of the PTA for the Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in River Forest, as president of the Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society and as a gray lady (volunteer nurse) at Hines Hospital during World War II.
Graveside services and interment were held at the family plot in Park Cemetery at 11:00 AM March 17, 2001 with Rev. Mark Engle officiating. A memorial service was held in Lombard on March 24, 2001 at the Beacon Hill Retirement Community. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
Lempi A. "Micky" Drake
MARQUETTE -- Lempi A. "Micky" Drake, 79, of County Rd. 550 Box 45, formerly of Snowberry Heights, died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, at her daughter's home after a long fight with cancer, early Sunday afternoon April 1, 2001 .
She was born July 18, 1921 in Eben Junction, a daughter of the late Erick and Aino (Mustamaki) Lintula. She married Toivo Alto in February of 1942, and he died in World War II. On April 1, 1955 she married Robert N. Drake and lived in Marquette, where she worked in several area businesses before retiring from the food service department of Northern Michigan University. She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, and enjoyed quilting, playing cards and spending time with family and friends at AuTrain
Survivors include two daughters; Kristi (Stephen) Lillie of Marquette and Kathleen Hobson of Grand Rapids, two sons, Loren (Kathryn) Drake of Green Bay, Wl and Dennis (Hilda) Alto of Walled Lake, Ml, her grandchildren; Anna, Darin, Jacob and Matthew Lillie, Heather, Brooks, Katie and Jenna Hobson, Cameron and Nicholas Drake, Michael and Jeremy Alto and Janine Nolan and three great grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters; Lillian Pohjonen, Viola Laine, and Martha Laine, all of Marquette and Bertha Alto of Eben Junction, two brothers, Leslie (Gloria) Lintula of Eben Junction and Richard Lintula of Marquette and a very special friend Betty Hartman. In addition to her parents and first husband she was also preceded in death by brothers Raymond, Elmer and Arnie and her husband Robert Drake.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, April 5, 2001 in St. Mark's Lutheran Church with Rev. James Fogle officiating. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens. Visitation will begin at the church at 9:00 AM Thursday. Pallbearers will be Bruce Hayry, James and Tom Laine, Richard and Ted Lintula and Alec Alto. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A special thanks to all of Lempi's caregivers, including the Oncology Unit at MGH, MGH Home Health and Lake Superior Hospice.
Leonard J. "Jim" Perry
NEGAUNEE -- Leonard J. "Jim" Perry, 73, of 911 Maple St. Negaunee died at 10:12 AM on Monday, April 2, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for 3 weeks.
Mr. Perry was born Dec. 5, 1927 in Republic to Leonard & Genevieve (Freeman) Perry, attended Negaunee High School and was a lifelong area resident. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII having served in the Asiatic- Pacific Area Campaign and earned a Victory Medal. He worked for CCI for over 40 years, many years as a truck driver and as a dryman before retiring in 1988. He was a sports fanatic, and enjoyed all sports. He loved his dog, "Buddy".
Surviving are his wife, Mildred E. (Gravedoni) 2 daughters; Toni (Lou) Greene, Marquette, Judy (Glen) Rigdon, Henderson, NV, 1 son, Michael (Sue) Perry, Marquette, 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 1 brother, Glenn (Joann) Perry, Ishpeming, several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 sisters; Delight Laurila & Jean Levi.
A private funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. John J. Shiverski officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. There will be no public visitation.
