Michael John Lambert
MARQUETTE -- Michael John Lambert, 41, of 516 Meadowbrook Lane, died Monday, April 2, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for one week.
He was born February 19, 1960 in Marquette to Merton and Mary (McVannel) Lambert and had lived here all his life. He was a 1972 graduate of Marquette Senior High School and worked for the past eight years at Pomp's Tires as a front end aligner. He was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall.
Michael is survived by his wife of 17 years, the former Christine McLenithan, three daughters, Kalia Marie, Michelle Lee and Jaquelyn Lambert, all of Marquette and Nichole (Justin) Thompson of Gladstone; his mother Mary Lou Lambert of Marquette, two sisters, Renee Martinez of Crescent City, CA and Kathleen (Melvin) Brunelle of Marquette, a brother Bill Lambert and grandmother Mary McVannell, both of Marquette and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father Merton, grandparents Merton and Della Lambert, grandfather Clyde McVannel and uncle Bill McVannel.
Visitation will be from 4:30-6:00 PM Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home, followed at 7:00 PM by a memorial service at the Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall with John Ferguson officiating.
Linnea M. Anderson
ISHPEMING -- Linnea M. Anderson, age 84, of 413 Marquette St. Ishpeming passed away Monday, April 2, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for the past two weeks.
Linnea was born May 3, 1916 in Ishpeming to the late John & Selma (Haavisto) Isaacson. She was a lifetime resident of Ishpeming. She drove school bus for the Head Start children. Linnea spent most of her life taking care of children and especially enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren. Linnea was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. Linnea quit school in the 8th grade after losing her parents within a 10 day period in 1931, to take care of the remaining nine siblings.
Linnea is survived by a daughter; Kathleen (Servero) Chavez of Champion, a son Gary (Sharon) Anderson of Ishpeming, 2 sisters; Irma Alanko of Ishpeming and Katherine Wolverton of Bay City, grandchildren; Douglas (Bobbie Jo) Anderson, Thomas (Anna) Anderson, Justina Anderson, Lynn Anderson, Kristine (John) French Theresa Chavez & Dr. Alexander (Dee) Chavez; 7 great grandchildren, several step grandchildren, along with many step great grandchildren, nieces & nephews. Linnea was preceded in death by her husband Gustav "Adolph" Anderson- 1986, a son Douglas Anderson- 1964, 6 brothers & 4 sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki & Rev. C. Bruce Ulstad officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home, Thursday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service on Thursday.
Mildred E. LaForest
NEGAUNEE -- Mildred E. LaForest, 81, formerly of 98 Croix St., Negaunee, died at 5:10 AM on Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center where she had been a patient for 2 years.
Mildred was born Feb. 29, 1920 in Ishpeming to Frank & Beatrice (Penhale) Cody, attended the Negaunee Schools and was a life long area resident. She worked for many years for the Negaunee Public Schools as a custodian until her retirement in 1982.
Surviving are one son Paul LaForest, Fort Worth, Texas and one sister Violet Kokko, Negaunee.
There are no services planned at this time. The Koskey Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Phillip Moilanen
HERMAN -- Phillip Moilanen, age 34, of Herman passed away on Monday, April 2, 2001 at his home.
Phil was born on January 19, 1967 in Plymouth, Michigan, son of Glenn and Jeanne (Smith) Moilanen. He grew up in Iron River and graduated from West Iron High School in 1985. He was in the US Army from 1985 - 87. He returned to Iron River and worked for Coleman Products. He then lived in California and then Arizona, moving to Herman three years ago. He worked for C-FAB in L'Anse for more than two years. He enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, camping, biking and four wheeling. Phil was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles-Aerie #2287 of L'Anse.
He is survived by his father Glenn of Herman, mother, Jeanne Moilanen Smith of Kingman, Arizona, a sister Terri (Jesse) Qualls of Burlington, NC, paternal grandmother Ingrid Moilanen of Herman, several aunts, uncles, cousins and one niece.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-8 pm at the Jacobson Funeral Home. The Eagles will conduct a service at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Friday, April 6, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church, with visitation one hour prior at the church. Rev. Margaret Grant will officiate. Burial will be held in the spring in the Herman Cemetery.

Shelly Azbell
ROCK -- Shelly Azbell, age 35 of Rock, (formally of Gladstone), died Monday evening April 2, 2001 at the home of her mother in Rock following a lengthy illness.
Shelly was born November 24,1965 at K I. Sawyer Air Force Base Hospital in Gwinn, Mi,
Shelly was raised in Rock and in 1984 graduated from Mid-Penn High School. She loved to be around children and also enjoyed music, dancing, bingo, camping and going to the casino. Family members remember Shelly as loving to be with people and as being a very happy person.
During Shelly's life, she was an active member at the Rock Bible Chapel, as well as a member of the 4-H Rock Club.
Survivors include: Shelly's mother, Karen Azbell, " Dad", Joseph Boucher, both from Rock, and father, Fred Azbell of Gladstone. Also surviving Shelly is 1 brother: Scott (Andrea) Azbell, Gladstone, 1 sister Julie Romeg Ohio, 2 nephews: Justin and Austin Azbell, and uncles, aunts and cousins.
Shelly was preceeded in death by 1 brother: Brian AzbelL her materna1 grandparents: Ed and Ernestine Berry, her paternal grandparents: Bevan and Catherine Bricker, 2 uncles: Frank Berry, and Donald Berry.
Shelly's family will receive friends on Thursday, April 5 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m at the Skradski Funeral Home. Funeral services for Shelly will follow at the Skradski Funeral Home at 6:00 p.m. with Mike Lipesto of the Rock Bible Chapel officiating. Memorials may be directed to the family of Shelly Azbell. Directly following funeral services, a luncheon has been provided at the Rock Lions Club. Burial will be at the Rock Cemetery. Skradski Funeral Home is in care of all arrangements.
Gordon Mathew Koski
L'ANSE -- Gordon Mathew Koski, 80, of L'Anse, passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at his home.
He was born on October 30, 1920 in Bessemer, the son of the late Emil and Naimi (Kari) Koski. Gordon attended Baraga High School, Flight School at MTU & Tool & Die School. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Gordon married Nora Corgan on May 26, 1939 in L'Anse and they lived in the L'Anse area all their lives. Mr. Koski worked for the Ford Foundation and All-Wood Inc of Baraga as a forester, and at C.C.I. as a heavy equipment operator for 14 years, retiring in 1983. Gordon was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps, the German Band of L'Anse & member and past commander of the L'Anse V.F.W. Post #3897. Gordon loved music, gardening, fishing and hunting.
Preceding him in death were his parents, several brothers and sisters and a grandson.
Surviving are his wife, Nora Koski of L'Anse, 1 son: Gordon (Marilyn) Koski of L'Anse; 5 daughters: H. Sue (Darwyn) Cote of Mohawk, Lynne Koski Lanczy of Marquette, Candace (Sigurds) Janners of Houghton, Trudi Koski of Ishpeming, Cynthia (Dennis) Lundy of L'Anse; 20 grandchildren: Wil, Bradley, Athena, Gordette, Colleen, Cathy, Darryl, Dan, Jane, Edward Jack, Elizabeth, Christy, Jeremiah, Honora, Victoria, Levi, Brandon, Sherry, Dennis A. & Mathew; 26 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren; step-mother, Martha Koski of Ishpeming; 4 brothers: Ronald (Donna) of Freemont, WI, Brian "Wally" (Lorraine) of Marquette, Kevin (Billie) of Mississippi, Gerald (Peggy) of Ishpeming; 2 sisters: Gloria Haapala of Marquette, Martha (Fran) Bertucci of Ishpeming & numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 7, 2001 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in L'Anse with Fr. Greg Heikkala to officiate.
Military rites will be accorded by the Keweenaw Detachment 1016 Marine Corp League following the Mass.
Inurnment will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery.

Mae M. Rochefort
MUNISING -- Mae M. Rochefort, age 77, of 612 W. Onota Street, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at 7:50 a.m. at her home. She was born on June 7, 1923 to the late Peter and Valerie (Marlot) Gollakner in Florence, Wisconsin. She graduated from Florence High School in 1941. Mae married Leslie Joseph Rochefort, Sr. on October 10, 1942. They were married for over forty-two years before he preceded her in death on February 15, 1985. Mae was a homemaker. In 1959, she and Les moved to Munising. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and Mae enjoyed spending time at home with her family. She also enjoyed playing BINGO and going to the casino.
She is survived by her ten children- Norman (Sandra) Rochefort of Milwaukee, Betty Richardson of Shingleton, Linda (Andy) Demogola of Hesperia, MI, Sharon (Ismah) Albright of Muskegon, Shirley Stone of Munising, Darlene (Ted Brown) Syers of Little Lake, Steven (Clara "TD") Rochefort of Munising, Patricia (Kenneth "Rocky") VanDorn of Akron, MI, Brenda (Bob) Helsel of Munising, and Leslie (Chris Weinberg) Rochefort, Jr. of Munising; 34 grandchildren; 52 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; sister- Elizabeth Boukidis of Lake Geneva; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and Leslie Sr., she was preceded in death by a grandson, Willard Syers III, 2 great granddaughters- Rita and Jennifer Richardson, sons-in-law- Jim Richardson, Willard Syers, Jr., and Scott Stone, and eight brothers and sisters.

Dennis G. Niemi
MUNISING Dennis G. Niemi, age 59, of E9370 E. Munising Avenue, died on Thursday, April 5, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at his home after a 2 1/2 year diagnosis of prostate cancer. He was born on July 13, 1941 in Ontonagon to Eino and Irene (Lamsa) Niemi. At the age of eight, Dennis's family moved to Livonia and he graduated from Livonia Bentley School in 1959. Dennis was a proud graduate of Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree with a math major. He taught school for two years at McMichael Junior High School in Detroit. In 1967, he started with IBM and worked as a system analyst consultant, working in the field with the customers he served. He married Cheryl (Heuss) Stevens on March 19, 1987. Dennis retired from IBM after 25 years in 1996 and her and Cheryl moved to Munising. He continued to work with the Hurley Medical Center as an independent computer contractor in their information service department, commuting home to the U.P. on weekends. Dennis substitute taught for the Munising Public Schools during the 1999-2000 school year. He enjoyed hunting (at least spending time at camp), fishing, hiking, being outdoors, golfing, and playing Blackjack at the casino.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Niemi of Munising; 4 children- Kimberly (James) Boullion of Scottdale, AZ, Jody (Duane) Jacobs of Indian River, MI, Eric (Karyn) Niemi of Saginaw, and David (Joanne Lazaro) Niemi of Phoenix, AZ; 2 step-children- Tracey (Mike Garland) Stevens of Flint and John Stevens of Clio, MI; 12 grandchildren- Stephanie, Brittany, Rachel, Tyler, Katlynn, Kara, Emily, Brandon, Michael, Ryan, Brandon, & Cameron; his mother- Irene (Bill) Laing of Bayonet Point, FL; sister- Donna (Richard) Reiter of Zephyrhills, FL; and nieces and nephews. Dennis was preceded in death by his father, Eino Niemi in May of 1992 and a son-in-law, Stacey Brewster in December of 1994.

Dennis's family would like to encourage all men and their families to realize the seriousness of prostate cancer. Cynthia Joy Elliot
ISHPEMING -- Cynthia Joy Elliott, age 45, of 7186 Co. Rd. 496 Ishpeming passed away following a lengthy illness Friday, April 6, 2001 at her residence with her family at her side.
Cynthia was born April 27, 1955 in Rogers City to the late Raymond H. & Nona H. (Kirkendall) Schaedig. She has been a resident of the Ishpeming area since 1978. Cynthia worked as a floral designer, most recently working at Teddy's Central Florist She enjoyed crafting and flowers. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Ishpeming.
Cynthia is survived by her husband, whom she married September 22, 1973, William Elliott; 2 children, Rebecca (Terry) Lemire of Kewaunee, WI and Michael (Laura) Elliott of Negaunee, a grandson Seth Elliott; 2 sisters, Elizabeth (Bryan) Jeske of Wakefield and Jacquelyn (John) Busch of Bessemer, her step mother Erma Lydman-Schaedig of L'Anse and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles & cousins. Cynthia was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter Melissa.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at the Bible Baptist Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. James Hill officiating.

LAKE ORION, MI -- Evan Andrew Plaxco, infant son of John and Lisa (Evans) Plaxco, 165 Schorn Rd, Lake Orion, MI 48362, was born on Monday, March 26, 2001 and passed away in his parents arms on Thursday, March 29, 2001. Evan Andrew touched many hearts in his short lifetime and is dearly missed. As well as his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents Gary Evans, Negaunee, and Mary Evans, Negaunee, Uncle Andy Evans, Negaunee, great grandparents Cubby White, Negaunee, and Doug and Gail Evans, Ishpeming, paternal grandparents John Plaxco, Fenton, and Robert and Lucille Daly, Fenton.
There was a Mass of the Angels for Evan Andrew on Saturday, March 31 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lake Orion. A graveside service will take place in the spring at the Negaunee Cemetery. ISHPEMING -- Michaella M. Nelson infant daughter of Amy Gauthier & Michael Nelson passed away unexpectedly Friday ApriI 6, 2001.
Michaella was born February 10, 2001 in Marquette and leaves her parents Amy Gauthier & Michael Nelson of Ishpeming her maternal grandmother Shirley Gauthier & grandfather Mike Cote of Ishpeming and maternal grandfather Ron Gauthier of Oconto, WI; her paternal grandmother Sharlene Beekman of Bessemer and paternal grandfather Michael Nelson of lshpeming; her maternal great grandparents - Celestine (Dave) Sullivan of Skandia along with numerous aunts, uncles & ¢ousins.

Richard "Dick" Brill
TRAUNIK -- Richard "Dick" Brill, age 74, of E.T. Road, Traunik, died on Thursday, April 5, 2001 at 7:20 P.M. at his son Paul's home in Grand Haven after a 10 year battle with cancer. He was born on September 2, 1926 in Janesville, Wisconsin to Kenneth
and Anna (Albright) Brill. At the age of two, Dick's family moved to Traunik. Dick served in the U.S. Navy from December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946. Dick was an auto body repairman, working for short periods in Detroit, Phoenix and mostly in Trenary and Traunik where he owned an operated "Brill's Auto/Body Shop." In addition to his mechanic and body man skills, Dick also worked as a carpenter, electrician, plumber, meat cutter, truck driver, and farmer. He worked at K. I. Sawyer for several years, until it closed in 1992. Dick was a member of the American Legion, Post #131 of Munising, the Ikkala Brothers V.F.W. of Chatham, and the Munising Moose Lodge #1386 and the Legion of the Moose; he was a member of the "25 Club," having signed over 50 members. He ran the Moose Lodge Bingo for many years, and worked the Moose Lodge Breakfast's and Fish Fry's. He loved cooking and baking; friends knew him for his jelly making. He loved hunting, fishing and just being in the woods. He is survived by 4 sons, Paul (Nancy) of Grand Haven, MI, Mark (Vicky) of Holton, MI, Rick (Faye) of Kansas City, MO, and Dale of Lapeer, MI; 5 Sisters, Vangie (Bob) Demuse, Gladstone, MI, Shirley (Swede) Jussila, Superior, WI, Harriet Hill, Chatham, MI, Kate (Norbert) Weber, Trenary, and Betty Russell, Wellington, Florida; 10 grandchildren- Rhonda, Shannon, Dustin, Jennifer, Kyle, Brent, Amanda, Kaylyn, C.J., and Jazlyn; 4 Great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sons, James and Brian; and 3 sisters, Esther Johnson, Viola Green and Sophia Kallio.

Jere D. Aldred
ISHPEMING -- Jere D. Aldred, age 61, passed away on April 7, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he had been a resident for the past two months.
Jere was born April 19, 1939 in Flint, MI to Ruth (Crosby) and the late Jeremiah Aldred. He spent a large number of years working as a plumber in the Flint area. He moved to Marquette in the late 1970's, married Lois Ridell in 1979 and eventually settled in Ishpeming where he ran his business D'Plumb Plumbing and Heating. He was a member of the Plumber & Pipe Fitters of America Union, Local #370 and the Calvary Church in Negaunee. He had a great love for fishing and hunting, especially with his family and friends. He loved to meet and talk with new people and always had a smile and a story to share.
He is survived by his wife Lois Aldred of Ishpeming; his mother Ruth Aldred of Flint; 6 daughters- Cheryl Tabor of Flint, Tina (Jeff) Cohen of Grand Blanc, Tamara (Donald) Madden of Grand Blanc, Charyn (Jose Vega) Aldred of Lansing; 3 sons- Jim Beckman of Flint, Jere (Tina) Aldred of Ishpeming and John Aldred of
Grand Rapids; a brother Wm. "Sandy" (Ada) Aldred of Flint; 2 sisters- Bethany (Bud ) Mazzoline of Detroit and Diana (Dan) Smith of Indianapolis, IN; 11 grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Jeremiah and a niece Jennifer Price and 2 nephews- Tony Badour and Ryan Adlred.

John "Jack" Carlton
NEGAUNEE -- John "Jack" Carlton, age 63 of 417 Prince St., Negaunee, passed away, Sunday, April 8, 2001 at the Marquette General Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Jack was born February 2, 1938 in Ishpeming to Ruth Skewes and the late Albert Carlton. Jack was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1956. He was a life long area resident, expect for the time he spent serving in the United States Navy.
Jack worked as a bus driver for the Ishpeming Senior Center. He had also worked for Pony Express Courier Corporation, Seline's, and he owned the Carlton House in Ishpeming. He was a member of the AMVETS and the Wesley United Methodist Church.
Jack is survived by his wife, whom he married June 1, 1985, Betty (Ivey) Carlton of Negaunee, his mother Ruth Bray of Holt, MI, a daughter Ruth Carlton- serving in the U.S. Navy- Norfolk, VA, 2 sisters; Beverly (Dan) Gillig of Lake Orion, MI and Norma Keedy of Holt, 15 nieces & nephews, 7 step children. He was preceded in death by his father Albert Carlton and his step father Lester Bray.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie with the Rev. Michael Quayle officiating. Burial will be at Northland Chapel Gardens.

BARAGA -- Michael J. Chosa, age 52, of Baraga, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2001 at his home.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Military services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, ay 11:00 a.m. at the L'Anse Baptist Church. Rev. Larry Saunders will officiate. Burial will be in the Assinins Cemetery.

Viola H. Taisto
THREE LAKES, MI -- Viola H. Taisto, 82, of Three Lakes, passed away Friday, April 6, 2001 at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was born on June 9, 1918 in Stambaugh, MI, daughter of the late Matt and Emelia (Hedvig) Maki. She attended the Summit and Herman Schools and later L'Anse and Michigamme Schools. She remained a lifetime area resident. On October 8, 1939 she married Reino Taisto in Laurium, MI. He preceded her in death on January 18, 1997.
Mrs. Taisto was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Michigamme. She was a former clerk and treasurer for Spurr Township. She was a also active in 4-H and the Extension Club.
Mrs. Taisto is survived by two sons, Eero (Barbara) Taisto of Michigamme, MI and M. John Taisto of Summit, MI, eight grandchildren, and nine great- grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded by two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services for Mrs. Taisto will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2001, from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse. Pastor Chris Nelson will officiate and Spring burial will take place in the Herman Cemetery. The family will greet friends Monday, April 9, 2001 from 6 until 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel.
