Mary Megilski Miron
MUNISING -- Mary Negilski Miron, age 88, of the Lakeshore Manor, 200 W. City Park Drive, Munising, died on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at her home. She was born daughter of the late John and Mary (Schurch) Negilski on December 6, 1912 in Mtanising and was a lifetime resident. She graduated from Sacred Heart School and attended Wm. G. Mather High School. Mary worked as a cook at the Candy Kitchen, the Munising Cafe, and the Red Cedar. She retired from the Red Cedar at the age of 65. Soon after retirement, Mary moved into apartment # 337 of the Lakeshore Manor. She had been a resident of her apartment for over twenty-two years. Mary was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Munising and she really enjoyed the relationships she developed with her friends at
the Manor, especially the 6:30 social hour.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Regina and Bob Greenberg of Louisville, KY, a granddaughter, Sarah Greenberg of Louisville, sisters-in-law, Vera Negilski and Melba Negilski, both of Munising, and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her son, Julian Miron in 1943 and her seven brothers and sisters, Madeline Aho, John Negilski, Jacob "Jack" Negilski, Ann Fox Frank Negilski, Henry Negilski, and Stanley Negilski.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00. Deacon James Anderson will conduct the funeral at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Munising on Saturday, April 21, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
Robert J. Trewhella
TWO HARBORS, MN -- Robert J. Trewhella, 78, Two Harbors, Michigan. He grew up in Michigan; daughters Kathy (Richard) Liupakka and Mary Trewhella both of Marquette, Michigan; sister Carrie (Melvin) Hoiem of Palmer, Minnesota, formerly of Covington, passed away on Friday, April 20, 2001 at his home.
He was born on January 13, 1947, in Ishpeming, Mississippi. He was in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and is a member of the VFW Post 8945 in Covington. Brian has been living in St. Paul for the past 20 years. He retired five years ago from the Soo Line Railroad.
Brian is survived by his daughter Julie Lahti of Marquette, step father Bernhardt "Ben" Rosten of Champion, girlfriend Joyce Atchinson of St. Paul, brothers Greg Rosten of Negaunee, Jerome (Kathy) Rosten of Minneapolis, Tyrone (Teresa) Rosten of Champion, Brent (Mary) Rosten of Negaunee, sisters Cindy Tuominen of Blaine, MN, Regina (Jeff) Kyllonen of Champion, Colleen (Christopher) Filizetti of Negaunee, Pamela Savu of Marquette, Melanie (Dean) Salmonson of New Ipswich, Michigan License Bureau from September of 1965 until her retirement from there in May of 1982. Pat also worked as a seamstress for the Burns and Denmans Department Stores. She was the Democratic Committee Chairman and played the guitar with her aunt and cousins in the band "Family Affair." Pat was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Anthony's Guild, the State Employee Retiree Association, and the Alger County Humane Society. She was an avid Packer fan and enjoyed Tiger games also. Pat loved music and also played the organ. She enjoyed spending time with her family watching and listening to her son, Greg's band. Pat bowled years ago with the Drewery bowling team. She liked to read, knit, crochet, and sew, and oftentimes sewed clothing for her children. She also loved her "other child", her pet dog, Katie.
Pat is survived by her three sons, Peter (Irma) LaCombe of Garden Grove, CA, Greg (Patsy) LaCombe of Munising, and Mark (Barbara) LaCombe of Marquette; four daughters, Andrea Minnesota, died Thursday, April 19, 2001 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
He was born June 18, 1922 to John and Mona (Anderson) Trewhella in Palmer, Michigan and served in the US Marines from 1942-46. He moved to Two Harbors in the 70's and married Eleanor October 20, 1979 at the United Church in Two Harbors. He worked in mines and for US Steel Great Lakes Fleet until retiring in 1982. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.
He is preceded in death by parents, son Michael, brother James and sister Mona Jean.
He is survived by wife Eleanor of Two Harbors; sons Robert (Marilyn) and Mark of Big Bay, Michigan, and Jackie (Larry) Bean of Canton, Michigan; sister-in-law Rosemary Trewhella of Marquette; grandchildren Tim, Shawn, Tammy (Dale), Jerry, Kevin, Lance, Jason, Stacy, Bobbi Jo (Roy), Anna and Michael; and great grandchild Cory.
Services were held at 3 PM Friday, April 20, 2001 in Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors.
Urho M. Haapala
L'ANSE -- Urho M. Haapala, 84, of L'Anse passed away April 19, 2001 at the Veterans Medical Center in Iron Mountain, MI. He was born in Herman, MI on March 17, 1917 the son of the late Matt and Sophia (Repola) Haapala. Urho attended the Herman and L'Anse schools and graduated in 1936. Mr. Haapala entered the US Army in 1942 and was assigned to the 317th field artillery battalion. He served in the South Pacific Theater where he was wounded in action. He was awarded the Purple Heart as a result of his injuries. In 1958, following his military service, he married the former Bernice Haanpaa in L'Anse. Urho worked in L'Anse for the Soo Railroad as a foreman until his retirement in 1977.
Mr. Haapala was a member of the United Lutheran Church, L'Anse. He was also a member of the VFW L'Anse Post 3897, DAV, and the Eagles Aerie Lodge 2287, L'Anse. His favorite pastimes included hunting, fishing, and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife Bernice of L'Anse, sisters, Martha Wiard of Ypsilanti, MI, Marietta (Elmer) Korpi or Traunik, MI, and Tyne Murtomaki of Nisula, MI. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him.
Funeral services for Mr. Haapala will be held at 1 p.m. Monday April 23, 2001 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Pastor Margaret Grant officiating. Interment will take place in the Herman Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until time of service on Monday. The L'Anse area veterans will conduct military honors at 12 p.m. Following the services, friends are invited to join the family in the Harrington Gathering Room, located at the funeral chapel for fellowship and a luncheon. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse assisted the family with arrangements.
Margaret Jean Genore
MARQUETTE -- Margaret Jean Genore, 80, of 222 S. Fifth Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday morning, April 21, 2001, at Marquette General Hospital where she had been a patient for the past five days. She had been in ill health for the past year. She was born May 5, 1920 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Forrest and Jean (McCombs) Kepler, and was a lifelong resident. She graduated from the John D. Pierce High School in 1938 and from Northern Michigan University) in June 1942. From 1942-1943 she taught in the Gwinn Public Schools. She then worked as a secretary-clerk for James Pickands Coal Company from 1953-1971. Margaret later was employed with the City of Marquette, at City Hall, as a secretary-clerk from 1972 until her retirement in 1982. Margaret was an avid golfer, enjoyed music, and loved to go shopping. She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, the Marquette Golf and Country Club, the Ladies of the Elks, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
A devoted mother, proud grandmother, and sister, she is survived by: her son and daughter-in-law, Forrest and Elizabeth Barry and daughter, Hannah Barry of Melbourne, Australia; a daughter, Jean E. Barry of Worcester, MA; a sister, Mary Ann St. Germain of Shelter Bay; and two nephews, Jack (Barbara) St. Germain of North Fort Myers, FL and Jim (Betty) St. Germain of Naples, FL. In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husbands, Ralph Ellis in 1942, Lawrence Barry in 1958, and William Genore in 1991; a son, Robert L. Barry in 1972; and by her nieces, Janet Collica and Julie St. Germain.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Monday, April 23, beginning at 4:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home Monday evening at 7:00 P.M. with Rev. Paul Weber officiating. Inurnment will be made in the Northland Chapel Gardens.
Raymond J. "Pierre" Fountain
HARVEY -- Raymond J. "Pierre" Fountain, 71, of 432 Cherry Creek Road, Harvey, entered eternal life Friday evening, April 20, 2001, shortly after admittance to Marquette General Hospital following an apparent heart attack. He was born May 30, 1929 in Jackson, Michigan State Police as a radio dispatch operator, retiring in 1977 due to ill health. Pierre's family always came first, and he thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, especially teaching his children and grandchildren a respect and love of all of nature. He took great pleasure in hunting, fishing, trapping, and logging. He lived for his camp, "Pierre's Palace", where he fed the eagles and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. For over 25 years the family sold Christmas trees at their home on Cherry Creek Road.
A devoted husband, father, proud grandparent, and brother, he is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joyce; three daughters, Bethany (Jeffrey) Haynes of West Bend, WI, and Lynnette Fountain and Cheryl Fountain both of Harvey; a son, Michael (Pamela) Fountain of Plymouth, WI; his grandchildren, Rebecca, Rachel, Nathan, and Jeffrey Haynes, Amber Coesfeld, Nicole Howard, and Samantha and Brianna Fountain; brother, Thomas (Janet) Fountain of St. Clair; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Pierre was preceded in death by a sister Margaret Fountain.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Monday, April 23, beginning at 10:00 A.M. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 12:00 Noon Monday in the funeral home with Bud Holmes, minister of the Lake Superior Christian Church, officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society.
Margaret E. Larabee
MARQUETTE -- Margaret E. Larabee, 75, of 1304 California, many cousins and friends. Sherry was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Thomas Belmore.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. James Challancin & Fr. Peter Gregory as con celebrants. Burial will take place at Park Cemetery in Marquette.
Friends may call at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service.
Pallbearers will be Leonard Manzoline, Donald & John Duquette, Angelo Bosio, Greg Gustafson and John Balbierz.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Thomas Hammond Moore
LIMESTONE/ GLADSTONE -- Thomas Hammond Moore, age 63, of 7640 Madeline Street, Saginaw, MI 48603, and formerly of Limestone and Gladstone, died following a lengthy illness on Sunday, April 22, 2001 in the late morning at his home. He was born in Wetmore, MI to Thomas Hammond and Ida Helen (Franks) Moore on November 2, 1937. Tom graduated from Eben High School in 1955 and was a graduate of the Detroit School of Business. He served eight years in the Air Force, one year in the Army National Guard, and retired from the Navy National Guard. Tom worked for Bell telephone in Escanaba and Pontiac. He retired as a supervisor in Saginaw after twenty-five years in 1991. He was a member of the Escanaba Free Lutheran Church.
Tom is survived by his wife, Carol of Saginaw, whom he married on October 23, 1965; daughters, Tammy and Tracy of Saginaw; son, Thomas of Florida; mother, Ida Moore of Limestone; sister and brother-in-law, Beryl and Edwin Jalonen of Munising,; brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Barbara Moore of Chatham, Patrick and Cindy Moore of Prentice, WI, and David and Linda Moore of Limestone; and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his father, Thomas, and a sister Jacquelyn.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 5 :00 until 8:00 and at the church on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Pastor Gerald Riley will conduct the funeral at the Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Eben on Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Limestone Cemetery. The Alger County Veterans Council will conduct military honors.
William H. Campbell
ISHPEMING -- William H. Campbell, 60, 856 N. Pine Street, died Monday morning April 23, 2001 at his home. He was in ill health for the past two weeks.
William was born December 5, 1940 to Francis and Blanche (Hanery) Campbell in West Branch Township. He was a member of the Marquette Moose Lodge No. 1059. He retired on April 1, 1989 from Brad Ragan Commercial Tire Center.
Surviving are his wife Judy Ann Young Campbell, one son; Shawn W. Campbell of Marquette, one stepson; Rodney (Terrilynn) Young of Negaunee Township Township, his mother; Blanche Campbell of Ishpeming; two brothers, Donald (Joyce) Campbell of Marquette and Robert Campbell of Ishpeming; a sister Beverly Walter, of Winlock, WA, two grandsons; James and Alexander Campbell and one step granddaughter; Aubrey Young. He was preceded in death by his father, Francis Campbell and two sisters, Evelyn and Shirley.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 26, 2001 at 11:00am at Northland Chapel Gardens with Rev. John Brady of Good News Assembly of God officiating. Friends may call at Northland Chapel Gardens from 10:00am on Thursday until the time of services. Memorials may be made to the Marquette County Humane Society. Clara S. Richer
MARQUETTE -- Clara S. Richer, 87, of 233 Rock Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Monday morning, April 23, 2001, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born August 12, 1913 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Felix and Priscilla (Drinkwine) Lamoria, and was a lifelong Marquette resident. Clara was employed for several years at the former Sweet Goods Shoppe. She was married to Alphonse Richer and the couple eventually raised ten children. Clara was very devoted to her family, enjoying being a homemaker, cooking, and gardening. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral. Survivors include: four daughters, Denise O'Neill of Marquette, Clara Rilley of Negaunee, Mary Haring of Detroit, and Christine (Kenton) Brown of Toledo, OH; five sons, Al (Maureen) Richer, Ernest Richer, Gerald (Lydia Merx) Richer, and Joseph Richer all of Marquette, and William Richer of Negaunee; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; a brother, William Campeau of Toma, WI; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Alphonse Richer, in 1972; by a son, Leonard Richer in 1982; sisters, Estelle Aho, Agnes Sheldon, Elizabeth Higgins, and Priscilla Runion; and a brother, Alcid Lamoria. Friends may call at the Bishop's Room at St. Peter Cathedral on Thursday, April 26, beginning at 4:00 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 6:00 P.M. Thursday evening in St. Peter Cathedral with Rev. James Roetzer as celebrant. Clara's sons will serve as her escorts. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.
Elizabeth A. "Liz" Bureau
MARQUETTE -- Elizabeth A. "Liz" Bureau, 71, died Sunday evening, April 22, 2001 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee.
Ms. Bureau was born September 16, 1929, in Marquette to the late Alfred & Mable (Lemire) Bureau and had spent most of her life in Marquette. She was a graduate of Bishop Baraga High School. Liz was previously employed as a cashier at the former Liberty Loan in Marquette and also for Commercial Credit in Milwaukee. She later worked for ten years as a clerk at the former Bureau Grocery Store in Marquette, which was owned by her family.
Liz was a member of St. Peter Cathedral as well as its altar society.
Survivors include a sister, Marie (Edward) Vickstrom of Ishpeming; cousins, Marie Stickney of Marquette, Lucille Connors of Negaunee, Don Lawry of Marquette, and Jim (Nancy) Lemire of Hartland, WI; four nephews, one niece and several great- nieces & nephews. Her parents and a sister, Joyce Menard, preceded her in death.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 27, 2001 in St. Peter Cathedral at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. James Roetzer officiating. Interment has already taken place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Eastwood Nursing Center Activities Fund, 900 Maas Street, Negaunee, MI 49866.

Grace Tripp Jernstad
MIDLAND -- Grace Tripp Jernstad, 102, of Midland passed away peacefully Monday evening, April 23, 2001 at the King's Daughters Home, Midland, MI.
She was born January 20, 1899 in Whitstable, Kent, England to the late William Stephen and Clara (Saffery) Stupple.
During WWI, Grace met Claude Henry Tripp, an American pilot who joined the Canadian Royal Air Force before the United States entered the war. They were married after the war on August 23, 1919 in Drummondsville, Quebec, where Claude was the manager of the H.W. Gossard Co. factory. They moved to Ishpeming, MI in 1920 when Claude was appointed as manager there and because they wanted to live in the United States.
Claude died in 1943 and Grace was appointed personnel manager after his death. She worked in that position at the factory until 1954. On January 1, 1955, Grace married James Jernstad at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Midland. She and Jim lived very happily in Ishpeming until he passed away in May of 1968.
Grace moved to Midland in 1990 after having wintered in Midland for many years.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed walking and playing golf. Grace traveled extensively in her later years and was a life member of the Ishpeming Chapter of the Order of Eastern Stars.
She had two children. Robert Donald Tripp who predeceased her in August of 1990 and Marjorie (Tripp) Annelin who lives in Midland with her husband, Bill. She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren, James (Mary) Annelin, Thomas (Catherine) Annelin, Ronald (Ruth Ann) Annelin, Candace (Tripp) Reimer and Robert Tripp, 8 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 5:00 pm, Thursday, April 26, 2001 from the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home, 4210 N. Saginaw Rd, Midland, MI. The Reverend Wallace H. Mayton, III of Memorial Presbyterian Church will officiate. Interment will be on Friday, 2:00 pm at the Ishpeming Cemetery in Ishpeming, MI. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2:00 pm until the time of service.
Memorials may be offered to Memorial Presbyterian Church- Midland, Presbyterian Church United- Ishpeming, the King's Daughters Home- Midland, the Salvation Army or Hospice.
William H. Campbell
ISHPEMING -- William H. Campbell, 60, 846 N. Pine Street, died Monday morning April 23, 2001 at his home. He was in ill health for the past two weeks.
