Theodore Keranen
AURA -- Theodore Keranen, age 89, of Aura, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2001, at his home.
Ted was born May 31, 1911 in Herman, son of the late John and Hilma (Pekkala) Keranen. He grew up in Herman and attended Herman grade school, then L'Anse High School. Ted studied business at Ferris State. He went to aviation maintenance school in Minneapolis, and built and flew his own airplane at age 19. Ted has a patent on a helicopter design from 1948. He married the former Viana M. Saari in 1936. The resided in the Detroit-Livonia area from 1939-74. He worked for Chrysler Corporation in customer service management, retiring in 1974. Upon retirement they moved to Aura to reside on Viana's family farm. He attended the Aura Lutheran Church, was a supporter of the Aura Fire Hall and Community Hall, on the Baraga County Planning Commission, and a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 547 F & AM, Francis Moore Consistory, Ahmed Temple, Keweenaw Bay Shrine Club, and the Trappers Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, mechanical and industrial hobbies, and had diverse do-it-yourself interests.
He is survived by his wife Viana of Bayside Village in L'Anse, his son Ted (Sharon) Keranen of White Lake, MI, sister Sadie Falk of Skanee, seven grandchildren Ted, Kathy, Karol, Tom, Todd, Tamara, and Laura, and 20 great grandchildren.
Ted is preceded in death by two brothers Elmer and Karl Keranen, and a sister Martha Dantes.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, April 30, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church in L'Anse. The visitation will be on Sunday from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church. The Masons will conduct a service at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. Rev. Margaret Grant will officiate. Burial will be in the Aura Cemetery.

Isabella Grace Chaudier
GWINN -- Isabella Grace Chaudier, infant daughter of Greg & Jennifer Chaudier, of Gwinn, entered eternal life Friday, April 27, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital.
She is survived by her parents; two sisters, Marina & Ashley Chaudier; grandparents, Dave and Jean Chaudier of Gwinn and Thomas and Dianne Hennink of Pennsylvania; great- grandparents, Clifford and Pauline Hemstock of Ishpeming, Harriet Capaldi of Pennsylvania and Ruth Hennink of Grand Rapids, MI; also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Private funeral services will be held in the Gwinn Funeral Home with Leon Jarvis, chaplain of Marquette General Hospital officiating. Interment will take place in Forsyth Township Cemetery.
Louis E. "Dutch" Girard
MARQUETTE -- Louis E. "Dutch" Girard, 93, a former Little Lake & Negaunee resident, died at 7:30 AM on Friday, April 27, 2001 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had resided since 1986.
Mr. Girard was born on Jan. 6, 1908 in Chocolay Township to Eugene & Sofronia (Gravelle) Girard and was a life long area resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and was honorably discharged in July of 1943. He married Laura Christopher-Fredin on June 4, 1960. Before his retirement Louis was employed by CCI and was a member of the United States Steelworkers of America. He loved organic gardening, playing his violin at local dance halls, telling jokes & making people smile. He stayed actively involved in the betterment of his community environment by serving on the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Member Council.
Surviving are his brother Lawrence "Cookie" (Lucille) Girard, Little Lake, several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death his wife Laura in 1965, his parents, 3 sisters; Florence (Albert) Teenier, Emma (George) Harris, Rosella (William) McNutt, and a brother Leo (Hazel) Girard.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday at the Chapel at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans with Rev. John J. Shiverski officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Friends may call at the Jacobetti Veterans Chapel from 1:00 PM until the time of services at 2:00 PM on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the WWII Veterans Memorial Fund, a V.F.W. Auxiliary Post of choice, or the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activity Fund.

Mabyn Lillian (Heslip) Gillen
GLADSTONE -- Mabyn Lillian (Heslip) Gillen, age 82 of Gladstone, Michigan died after a lengthy illness at 1:40 PM Friday, April 27, 2001 at Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming, Michigan with her daughter and son-in-law at her side.
She was born on May 26, 1918 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin to Samuel and Doris Heslip.
She attended Madison College, Madison Tennessee, graduating as a Registered Nurse and devoted over forty years of her life working as a Nurse. She traveled to Haiti as a Missionary Nurse and also to the island of Ponape to do volunteer work as well.
Before Mabyn moved back to Gladstone, she was an active member of the Lansing Seventh- Day Adventist Church where she worked for many years teaching the Junior Division and working in Community Service.
She was most recently a member of the Escanaba Seventh-Day Adventist Church where for many years she assisted with the Vacation Bible School and played the piano for church services. She also loved to plan parties for the church membership.
Mabyn loved playing table games, baking and making fudge. She was known for her hospitality, generosity and wonderful sense of humor.
Her first husband, Glen W. McKinney and her second husband Earl Gillen preceded Mabyn in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Glenda (Russel) Mock, Champion, MI, one sister, Gladys Sheeran, San Diego, California, 2 grandchildren, Sean (Jeffrey) Kellogg, Buchanen, MI and Michael (Alicia) Rau, Powers, MI, 2 nieces and three great grandchildren, Emilyanne, Paige and Brenden, who knew her as "Granny the Great", and several cousins, relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at the Skradski Funeral Home, 706 Wisconsin Avenue, Gladstone, MI. Pastors Michael Wise of the Escanaba Seventh-Day Adventist Church and Pastor Dave Jorgensen of the Marquette Seventh-Day Adventist Church will preside.
Pallbearers will be Russel Mock, Michael Rau, Jeffrey Kellogg, Joseph Hainault, Melvin Gillen and Gerald LaMarch.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11:00 AM until the time of the service.
Memorials may be made to th Seventh-Day Adventist Church School in Escanaba, Michigan.
Michael Allen Murphy
RUMLEY -- Michael Allen Murphy, 47, of N5220 Stuer Rd., died Friday, April 27, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient the past two weeks.
He was born September 25, 1953 in Marquette to Harold and Agnes (Thompson) Murphy and had lived in this area all his life. He worked for the Michigan State Extension Service at the experimental farm in Chatham.
Survivors include his mother Agnes Murphy of Marquette; five sisters, Terri (William) Wills of Gwinn, Jean (Richard) Shaw of Skandia, Beth (Dan) Virta of Sundell, and Mary Kaye (Mark) Murphy and Laurie (Fred) Beauchamp, both of Marquette; his grandmother Agnes Staricka of Marquette and nieces and nephews B.J., Kelly, T.J., Tawni, Valerie, Fred, Mindy, Kristi, Katie, Krysta, Dylan, Cole, Ryan, Jo, Amy, & Emily. He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, April 30, 2001 in the Faith Assembly of God Church with Rev. Mark Larson officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery with Tim Lintula, Louis Longtine, Bob Buerhly, Sonny Robinson, Bill Gauthier and Harold Hautio acting as pallbearers. Visitation will begin at the church at 12:00 PM Monday. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ann Cecelia
SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA -- Ann Cecelia Silveri, 9O, of 1913 N. Westwood Ave., Santa Ana, California, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at St. Joseph Hospital in Santa Ana.
Mrs. Silveri was born July 14, 1910 in Marquette to the late Joseph and Concetta (DePietro) Markantony. She was raised in Marquette and worked for awhile at the former Piqua plant before taking employment in Detroit where she met and married Frank P. Silveri.
Frank operated a tile business in Detroit. In the mid 1940's, Ann and Frank moved to California where he continued in the tile business. Ann worked as his bookkeeper and partner and they have lived in that area ever since.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Frank P. Silveri; one brother, Anthony (Beulah) Markantony of Marquette; two sisters, Elizabeth Markantony of Ferndale, MI and Mary Charbonneau-Wade of Garden Grove, CA; also surviving are many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents were two sisters, Della Davis and Verna Bur; also three brothers, Mark, Victor and Joseph Markantony.
Visitation will be in the Bishop's Room of St. Peter Cathedral on Thursday, May 3, 2001 from 10 to 11 a.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in the Cathedral beginning at 11 a.m. on Thursday with the Rev. Msgr. Louis C. Cappo officiating. Entombment will take place in Northland Chapel Gardens Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be John Major, J.D. Major, Michael Bur, Joseph Peruski, Robert Anderson and Derek Anderson.
Cheryl F. Walton
TEXARKANA -- Mrs Walton was born on August 12, 1953, at Escanaba, Michigan, and had lived in Texarkana most of her life She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and was a Hair Stylist. She was preceded in death by her brother, Donnie Hill.
Survivors include: her husband, Holbert Walton of Texarkana, Arkansas, 4 daughters and 3 sons-in-law, Amanda and Keith Jones of Hooks, Texas, De nielle and Joe Woodard of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Melinda and Richard Loomis of Texarkana, Arkansas, and Stephanie Pryor of Texarkana, Arkansas, her mother, Frances Hill of San Diego, CA, her father, Villo Hill of Marquette, MI, 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Victor and Tina Hill of Milwaukee, WI, and Timothy and Carol Hill of Genoa, AR, 2 sisters and brothers-in-law, Rhonda and Ralph Rogullo of San Diego, CA, and Anita and Randy Patterson of Texarkana, TX, and 4 grandchildren, Lauren Beck and Christian Woodard of Ft. Smith, AR, and Amber and Haley Loomis of Texarkana, Arkansas.
Funeral services will be at Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. Wallace Edgar officiating. Burial will be at Rocky Mound Cemetery under the direction of Texarkana Funeral Home.
Elsie M. Herrala
PALMER -- Elsie M. Herala, 87, 401 Nicholas Ave., Palmer died at 10:15 PM on Friday April 27, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where she had been a patient for 2 years.
Mrs. Herrala was born Nov. 18, 1913 in Princeton to Gust & Sanna (Laukkonen) Annala and was a lifelong area resident. Before her retirement she worked for many years as a cook at the Palmer Nursing Home and she was a homemaker.
Elsie was a member of Hope Free Lutheran Church, Ishpeming. She loved cooking, baking and enjoyed shopping.
Surviving are one son, Walter (Susan) Herrala, Warren, MI, one daughter, Leila LaPin, Plainview, TX, 8 grandchildren; Crystal Franklin, Gail (Jim) Martin LaPin, Vicki, (Brent) Rose, Yvette (Dale) Hobbs, Val (Susie) LaPin, Lori (Mark) Sheppard, Kevin (Wendy) Herrala, Tammy Herrala, 10 great grandchildren, 2 sisters; Bertha Saara, Negaunee, Ruth Suobank, Rogers, Arkansas, several niece & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Toivo Herrala in 1984.
Funeral services will be held at 5:00 PM on Tuesday at Hope Free Lutheran Church, Ishpeming with Rev. Michael Burke officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 5-8 PM today (Monday).
Margaret Bertrand
MANISTIQUE -- Margaret Bertrand, 88, of 900 Stueben, Manistique, Michigan, died April 28, 2001 at Marquette General Hosptial in Marquette. She was born February 3, 1913 in Manistique, the daughter of the late Joseph and Suzannah (Matzko) Hoholik. She attended St. Francis de Sales School and was a graduate of Manistique High School with the Class of 1930.
On June 12, 1933 the former Margaret Hoholik married Raoul Z. Bertrand at St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique. They lived in Marquette, Sault Ste. Marie and Battle Creek before returning to Manistique in 1945. Raoul preceded her in death on March 13, 1994. Margaret was employed at the Manistique Clinic and the Manistique Center for 21 years. She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church of Manistique and was an avid reader and bridge player.
Survivors include a daughter, Janelle (Robert) Mickelson, Brighton, MI., sons, Terry (Sharon) Bertrand, Mesa, AZ., Darryl (Jeri) Bertrand, Manistique, nine grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, one great great grandson, brother, Ernest Hoholik, Manistique, sister Lorraine Barrett, Greenville, MI, several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson Douglas Bertrand; a sister Isabel Rampani; and a brother Jerome Hoholik.
Visitation will be 4:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at Messier-Broullire Funeral Home, Manistique, K of C Rosary at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home, Parish Liturgical Prayers, 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home, Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at St. Francis de Sales Church, Manistique with Father Peter Minelli officiating. Burial will be Fairview Cemetery, Manistique.

Sara Dinger Schweinsberg
ALMA -- Sara Dinger Schweinsberg age 102, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2001 at the Michigan Masonic Home in Alma. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at 11am from the Doig Chapel at the Michigan Masonic Home, Alma. Interment will be in Shenango Valley Cemetery, Greenville, PA. Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Masonic Home, 1200 Wright Ave., Alma, MI 48801. Local arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home, Alma.
Sara was born in Gettysburg, PA in May of 1898, the daughter of Michael Calvin Dinger, M.D. and Mary Bacher Dinger.
She was a graduate of Thiel College, Greenville PA and of the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She later completed a residency in Opthalmology at the Will's Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. She practiced in Marquette, MI for many years, and also worked at the University of Michigan Health Service in Ann Arbor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer Schweinsberg Sr., and by a son Wilmer Schweinsberg Jr. She is survived by two sons, Michael H. Schweinsberg M.D. of Clive IA and Stephen Schweinsberg M.D. of Troy, MI. She had eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Bernhardt Maki
CHAMPION -- Bernhardt Maki, age 79, of 4942 Co. Rd, FB Champion died Sunday evening April 29, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming.
Bernhardt was born December 22, 1921 in Humboldt to the late Gust & Selma (Nordlund) Katajamaki. He was a lifelong area resident. He worked for the Teamsters AFL - CIO Operating Union for over 40 years.
He is survived by 1 stepdaughter Doris (Michael) Waino of Negaunee, 1 stepson Charles (Jenny) Hendrickson of Republic, 7 step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Tyyne in 1979, 2 stepsons, 1 stepdaughter and 1 stepgrandson.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday May 2, 2001 at 7:00 P.M. at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Christopher Nelson to officiate Burial will be in the Humboldt Township Cemetery.

Raymond E. Nadeau
MAITLAND, FLORIDA -- Raymond E. Nadeau, 87 died in Maitland, Florida, on Saturday, April 14, 2001. Raymond was a Marquette native and NMU graduate. After his 1936 graduation from NMU, Nadeau taught speech-communication and directed speech activities in five Michigan high schools: Alpha, Gladstone, Munising, Sturgis, and Jackson. That early teaching was interrupted, first in 1939 by his accepting an all-expense fellowship at Catholic U of America where he earned an M.A., and then by his serving overseas with the Army in WWlI.
He left Jackson in 1948 to attend the University of Michigan where, under the G.I. Bill he completed a Ph.D. in communication in 1950. He next taught for fourteen years at the University of Illinois and for another fourteen at Purdue University where he headed the Department of Communication from 1964 to 1974. During his long career, he wrote fourteen journal articles (three appearing in later anthologies), a monograph, and six textbooks (two of them co-authored).
Other career notes: Honor society memberships in Kappa Delta Pi (education), Delta Sigma Rho (forensics), and Phi Kappa Phi (scholarship). Speaker or chair at fourteen professional meetings. Consulting Editor, Central States Speech Journal (1963-1964) and Quarterly Journal of Speech (1963-66, 1969-71). Cited for scholarship by the Speech Communication Association (1965). Chair, Purdue University Studies Publication Board (1967-1973). Selected nationally as a member of the Pheasant Run Conference on Rhetoric (1970). Elected delegate to the SCA 1970 Constitutional Convention. Highreadership awards in advertising - Readex 1974 and '81; Starch 1977; Ad-Gage 1977 and '81, FJP Performance 1981. (An instrument - rated pilot, Nadeau logged almost 2000 hours in professional, business, and personal flying.)
Nadeau was a son of Lida and Arthur Nadeau, both deceased. The family home was for many years on East Michigan Street. He is survived by his wife, the former Frances Harrington, also a native of Marquette; three children, Joseph of East Windsor, NJ,
Julie Leblanc, Longwood, FL, and Jeanne Stovall, Charlottesville, VA; a brother, Albert of Cape Coral, FL; seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild. The Nadeaus had celebrated their 50'h wedding anniversary in 1991.
The body has been cremated. A memorial service is being planned for a later date.
Alice S. Racine
ISHPEMING Alice S. Racine, age 93, a resident of Marquette County Medical Care Facility since 1997, passed away Monday April 30, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming.
Alice was born December 10, 1907 in Ishpeming to the late John and Sanna Wirtala. She was a lifelong Ishpeming resident and an active member of the Bible Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son Randall of Lansing; 6 grandchildren William, Robert, Randall, Paul, Susan and Joe Racine, 11 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. A daughter in law Joanne Racine of Ishpeming a sister in law Mrs. Werner Wirtala of Ishpeming along with several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Racine Sr. and a son Ernest Racine Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday May 3, 2001 at the Bible Baptist Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. James Hill to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 AM Thursday at the Bible Baptist Church. The Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Arnold Haglund
STEPHENSON -- Arnold Haglund, age 90, of Stephenson passed away March 20, 2001. Survivors include: his wife Marion, of Stephenson; 2 sons, David (Maila) Haglund of Skandia and Arnold W. Haglund of Ann Arbor, Michigan; 3 sisters, Mildred Brigman of Marquette, Elsie (Carl) Johnston of Skandia and Esther (Bill) Thompson of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; and 2 brothers, Roger of Skandia and Vernon (Elsie) of Skandia.
Funeral services were held March 23, 2001 in Stephenson.
Graveside services will be Saturday May 5, 2001 at 11:00 am EST at Haglund Cemetery in Skandia. Reverend David Lindeblad will be officiating. A luncheon will follow.
