Stephen A. Kirtley
MARQUETTE -- Stephen A. Kirtley, 35, of 809 Altamont Street, Marquette, died early Saturday morning at his residence following a long illness from end stage renal disease.
Mr. Kirtley was born November 24, 1965, at the former Kincheloe Air Force Base, Michigan.
Steve was formerly employed by Meer Dental Supply in Lower Michigan. He later moved to the Upper Peninsula and began working with Johnson Printing in Marquette. He also provided private duty home health care in Escanaba. On December 29, 1994 he married his wife, Ashli in Marquette.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northern Michigan University in English and was working on a Master's degree in writing at the time of his death. Steve taught in the English department at NMU in 1998 and headed up their writing center in 1999.
He was a member of Faith In Christ Fellowship in Marquette, Sigma Tau Delta, Mortarboard and the National Republican Committee.
Steve's greatest joys in life came from raising his four children and from the satisfaction he attained in writing.
He is survived by his wife, Ashli J. Kirtley; four children, Thomas Dayton, Emily Aliina, and twin daughters, Dana Kathryn and Bethany Pearl Kirtley, all at home; his mother, Judith Kreiger of New Mexico; his father, John Kirtley of Texas; one brother, Scott Kirtley of Arizona; his aunt, Jackie Winkowski of Sands; also many other family and friends.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Faith In Christ Fellowship, 145 W. Ridge Street, Marquette with Pastor Wayne DeYoung officiating. Steve's family will greet relatives and friends one hour prior to services at the church. A reception will follow in the church auditorium.

KIVA -- Thomas Keith Yokeum age 54, Yokeum Road, Kiva, died on Saturday, January 6, 2001 at his home as the result of heart failure. He was born on January 8, 1946 in Munising. No services are scheduled at this time and a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
Harvey R. Baker
KINGSFORD -- Harvey R. Baker, 90, of 729 Breitung Ave., KIngsford, died Friday January 5, 2001 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Mr. Baker was born May 8, 1910 in Stambaugh Michigan, and was the son of the late Joseph and Evelyn (Willette) Baker. He married the former Gertrude Montambo on August 17, 1935 in Iron River, she preceded him in death on July 14, 1990.
He is survived by 2 sons, Ralph G. Baker of Ontonagon, and Gary (Luanne) Baker of Norway, 1 daughter, Carole (Clifford) Goodman of Gwinn, 1 brother, John Baker of lower Michigan, 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 9, from 6-8 pm at the Kingsford Funeral Home. The funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, January 10, at 9:30 at the funeral home and at 10:00 am at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will offer the mass of christian burial. Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery.

ISHPEMING -- Leona C. Lindholm, age 80 formerly of Rt. 3 59950 Co.Rd. 581, Ishpeming died Saturday, January 6, 2001 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she has resided for the past 3 1/2 years.
Leona was born August 9, 1920 in Ishpeming to the late Charles & Helga (Maki) Schmeltz. She was a life long area resident. She graduated from Ishpeming High School. She was a member of the Good News Assembly of God Church in Ishpeming.
Leona is survived by four daughters; Lois (Bryan) Ogea of Champion, Lorraine (Thomas) Kevern of Gwinn, Ruth (Larry) Warner of Three Lakes, Debra (Donald) Palomaki of Ishpeming, 3 sons; Robert (Jean) Lindholm of Ishpeming, Paul Lindholm of Ishpeming and James (Amanda) Lindholm of Champion, sisters in law Myra Arcand of Negaunee & Mary Schmeltz of Ishpeming, brother in law Kenneth Oja of Ishpeming, 12 grandchildren & 10 great grandchildren & several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Byron, 2 brothers Charles & Leslie Schmeltz & sister Lillian Oja.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2000 at the Good News Assembly of God Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. John Brady officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Friends may call at the Good News Assembly of God Church Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. Pallbearers will be Leona's grandchildren. EUGENE, IN -- Janet Eve Bourgeois, age 72, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2001. She was born on September 5, 1928 in Marquette, Michigan to John and Elizabeth (Senne) Harkin.

Francis W. Peppin
ORMOND BEACH, FL --Francis W. "Frank" Peppin of Ormond Beach, a retired Executive of Greyhound Lines Transportation Company, died at home.
Mr. Peppin, a naval veteran of World War II, was born in Ishpeming, Michigan. The highlight of his long career was the many years in Honolulu, Hawaii as the Vice President of Greyhound Royal Hawaiian Transportation Company after which he retired to Ormond Beach, Florida. Mr. Peppin was an avid sportsman.
Survivors include his wife Stella Roti-Peppin of 60 years, a son Gene Peppin and wife Ann of Denver, Colorado, a daughter Karlene Pitrusu of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and four grandchildren, Elizabeth Lancing, Matthew Peppin, LeeAnn Pitrusu and Michael Pitrusu.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Care of Memorial Hospital, 875 Sterthaus Avenue, Ormond Beach, Florida 32174.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at Prince Of Peace Church, 600 S. Nova Road, Ormond Beach, Florida 32174.

GOULD CITY -- Michael D. Patch, 41, of Gould City, died Monday morning January 8, 2001 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Uno Elmer Kangas
GWINN -- Uno Elmer Kangas, 81, of 101 North Tamarack, Gwinn, entered eternal life early Tuesday morning, January 9, 2001, at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee following a lengthy illness. He had resided at Eastwood since October 30. Uno was born April 3, 1919 in Gwinn, a son of the late Elmer and Hilda (Willig) Kangas, and was raised in Gwinn. When he was 14, his mother died and he stayed at home, helping to care for his family. He entered the US Army in 1942, and was stationed in the Burma, India Theatre
of Operations during World War II. On February 2, 1945 he married Mayme Ellen McCollins Hjelt, and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family. For over 33 years, Uno was employed as miner with the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, working at the Mather A, Mather B, and Maas mines. The family resided in the Negaunee and Ishpeming areas during this time, moving back to Gwinn in 1966 when Uno retired in 1966 due to disability. Uno was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Gwinn VFW Post #5670, and the Gwinn Horseshoe League. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing horseshoes, and a good game of cards. A devoted father, proud and loving grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, he is survived by: a daughter,
Susan Oakland of Marquette; a son, Steven (Ruth) Kangas of Sparta, WI; his grandchildren, Michele (Mark) Cavin, Terri Mattson, Mikki Mattson, Kenneth Mattson, Pepsi (Daniel) Jacobs, Victoria Sheridan, and Michael (Tammy) Phillips; great- grandchildren, Amanda Cherry, Shawn Sheridan, Ashley Wiggins, Kevin Tiziani, Collin Cavin, Reece Cavin, and Chase Phillips; two sisters, Ruth Champion of Ishpeming, and Martha (Leo) Mattson of Milwaukee, WI; three brothers, Arnie Kangas and Lauri (Gloria) Kangas both of
Ishpeming, and Eino Kangas of Gwinn; a brother-in-law, Raymond (Beverly) Hjelt of Grand Rapids; a step-brother, Russell Kanerva of Gwinn; several nieces and nephews. Uno was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Hulda (Murtomaki) Kangas; wife, Mayme Ellen Kangas in 1988; a daughter, Marlene Phillips; son-in-law, Richard Oakland; sister, Elsie Koski; brothers, Bernhart, Onni, John, and Reino Kangas; and step-brothers, John, Toivo, and Leo Kanerva. CURTIS -- Belva E. Moore, 91, of Curtis, died Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.
At request, cremation services will take place with no public services scheduled. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Curtis.

Joseph James Sarvello
EUGENE, OREGON -- Joseph James Sarvello of Eugene, died January 8, at the age of 83. (Age related causes). He was born July 18, 1917 in Ishpeming, Michigan to parents Frank and Clara (Valela) Sarvello. He married Virginia Portale in Ishpeming, Michigan October 19, 1937. She preceded him in death May 2, 1997.
He lived in Ishpeming until 1960 then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. He served in the Navy during WWII. He was a master craftsman, welder of Missiles. His hobbies were arting, music, dancing, golfing, fishing & hunting. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and Knights of Columbus. He received many awards of craftsmanship on missiles.
He is survived by his daughter, Claress Sarvello of Eugene; two brothers, Frankie Sarvello and Salvatore Sarvello, both of Ishpeming, Michigan. Two sisters, Rose McDonald of Midland, Michigan and Catharine Lucas of Ishpeming, Michigan; 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his son Joseph.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Friday, January 12, at 2:00 P.M. at England's Eugene Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, West Valley, Utah. England's Eugene Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Josephine Mary Violetta
IRONWOOD -- Josephine Mary Violetta, 93, formerly or Hurley and Pence, Wis., died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in Ironwood.
She was born Dec. 27, 1907, in Sovere, Italy, daughter of the late Andrew and Johanna (Forchini) Maffesanti.
In 1909, at the age of 18 months, she cam to Gwinn, where she attended school. She moved to Pence in 1925.
On Oct. 29, 1929, she was married to Sylvio "Vic" Violetta, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Montreal, Wis. They then moved to Iron Mountain and Negaunee, where they owned and operated VIGA Bowling Alley for 25 years. They later moved back to Hurley in 1966.
Josephine was a member of the Italy Lodge (Druids), and former member of the Range Paisanas and Hurley Woman's Club.
Her husband, Sylvio, preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 1992. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Angelo "Sharkey" in 1986, Joseph in 1993, and Frank in 1918; and a sister, Catherine Maffesanti in 1953.
She is survived by two sons, Donald (Vernita), Dayton, Ohio, and David (Rita), Dewitt, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great- grandchildren; two brothers, Frank, and John, both of Pence.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Robert E. O'Connell, presider.
Visitation and Liturgical prayers were at the Engstrom Funeral Home in Hurley.
Burial will be in the City of Negaunee Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Steve, Scott and Bradley Violetta, Stacy Schultz, and Frank and John Maffesanti.

Leona Kroll
MARQUETTE -- Leona Kroll, 93, of 429 Baraga Ave., Marquette, died early Tuesday morning at Munising Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
Miss Kroll was born October 23, 1907 in Marquette to the late John and Constance (Kulka) Kroll and had been lifelong area resident. Leona worked for many years at the former Woolworth store in Marquette as a clerk until her retirement. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral and enjoyed working crossword puzzles and sewing.
Survivors include two nephews, Melvin A. Joslin II and Bill Kroll, both of Marquette; one great niece, Andrea Marie Joslin; also two great nephews, Melvin A. Joslin III and Carl E. Joslin, all of Chehalis, WA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Peter Cathedral with the Rev. Msgr. Louis C. Cappo officiating. Interment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at the church.

Matthew James Beairl
MARQUETTE -- Matthew James Beairl, 17, of 229 W. Michigan St., Marquette, died unexpectedly Monday evening at home.
Mr. Beairl was born December 4, 1983 in Appleton, Wisconsin and had lived in Marquette since August of last year, moving here from Laona, Wisconsin. He was in his junior year at Marquette Senior High School where he played on the Redmen football team. At Laona he played both junior and senior high school football and basketball. He had also played Little League baseball in his younger years.
Matthew was a drummer in the Laona marching band and participated in the Wisconsin State Solo and Ensemble. He was active in Boy Scouting and 4H. He was a member of St. Leonard Catholic Church in Laona as well as St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette where he was active with the Life Teen program. He was a faithful altar server at both of his parish homes.
Matthew loved to go to his grandpa Bennett's camp at Laughing Whitefish Point where he enjoyed many games of cribbage with his grandfather as well as the sauna. He and his father went on several fishing trips to Isle Royale and Canada together.
He had a summer job at Camp Five Steam Train and Museum in Laona where he worked as a tour guide as well as on the maintenance crew.
He will be sorely missed by his family and friends who loved him dearly especially his parents, Peter H. and Cynthia (Bennett) Beairl of Marquette; a brother, Joseph D. W. Beairl of Jacksonville, FL; maternal grandmother, Virginia Bennett of Marquette; uncles and aunts, Timothy (Dianne) Bennett of Marquette, Michael (Diane) Bennett of Iron Mountain, Mary Bennett of Marquette, Margaret (Gary) Gustafson of Marquette, Josephine Fox of Loretto, MI, Rose (Russ) Cerny of Vermontville, MI, Robert Beairl of Kingsford, MI and Norma Price of Ashland, WI; also surviving are numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, James Bennett; paternal grandparents, Joseph and Lillian Beairl; also two uncles, Shawn Bennett and Jack Price.
Friends may call at the Canale- Tonella Funeral Home on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. where a parish prayer service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Bishop's Room of St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Cathedral with the Rev. Msgr. Louis C. Cappo and the Rev. Fr. John Cerkas concelebrating. Interment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Nathan Saari, Brad Tryan, John Bennett, Michael Bennett, Brad Webb, Brett Gilligan, Brian Bobbe, Jason Casey, Kevin Danielczak and Gerald Martin.

Edward Robert DeRoche
IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO --Edward Robert DeRoche, died January 9, 2001 in Idaho Falls, Idaho after a long illness. He was born November 6, 1907. He is the sixth son and eighth member of the fourteen children of William and Celina DeRoche of Champion, Michigan in Marquette County.
Mr. DeRoche, received fundamentals of Catholicism in Sacred Heart Church in Champion. Graduated from Champion High School in 1925. Bee, as he was commonly known, spent his life in the skilled trades of the construction industry as a leavy equipment operator, licensed electrician, general contractor, etc. He was always known for his intense fondness of horses of all breeds and widely recognized as an authority on breeding, training and managing them, and had a love for hunting.
On March 2, 1932, Bee and his wife "Dolly" Clarisa Davis were married. There two sons Don and Irving were born in Champion, Michigan and Dayton, Ohio, respectfully. Bee was preceded in death by his wife "Dolly" on February 10th, 1988, and eleven of his brothers and sisters, Celina DeRoche Derrie, Joseph, William, Tom, Albert, Emma DeRoche Balbierz, Frederick, Agnes DeRoche Pertulla, Helen DeRoche Pallas, Richard, and Ernest.
He is survived by two brothers, Jack and Bob, a son Don and three grandchildren, Vicky Lyn DeRoche, Christopher, and Ronald, all of Idaho Falls, a son Irving and four grandchildren Terry DeRoche Evarta, Lisa Clair DeRoche, Brad, and Scott, all of Caro, Michigan, and more than seventy-five nephews and nieces.
A funeral mass will be celebrated in Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Cremation will follow.
