Gary Houle
MARQUETTE -- Gary J. Houle, 55, of 2582 Huron Street, Marquette, died peacefully Saturday morning, May 26, 2001 at home.
Mr. Houle was born June 2, 1945 in Hancock, Michigan, a son of Joseph R. and Carroll (Dyni) Houle. He graduated from Hancock Central High School in 1963 and then entered the U.S. Navy serving as a medic in Vietnam. He was the owner and operator of Houle Contracting in Marquette.
Gary was an avid hockey fan and had played with the former Calumet Wolverines and Portage Lake Pioneers hockey teams. Until December of 2000, he played in the Marquette senior men's hockey league.
Gary enjoyed participating in his kids' activities including junior hockey, figure skating, skiing and baseball.
He is survived by his wife, the former Katherine Healy whom he married on August 20, 1982 at St. Ignatius Church in Houghton; five children, Molly and Michael Houle, both at home, Kris Houle of Houston, TX, Jesse Houle of San Diego, CA, and Josh (Tina) Houle of Montgomery, TX; his parents, Joe and Carroll Houle of Hancock; siblings, Jim (Marcia) Houle and Linda (Jim) Piiparainen, both of Hancock, Tom (Cindy) Houle of Flushing, MI, Carole Sue (John) Marino of Waukesha, WI and Joe (Michelle) Houle of Grand Blanc, MI; also surviving are seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home in Marquette. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7 pm Tuesday in St. Christopher Catholic Church with the Rev. Alex Sample officiating. Interment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

John Francis Kordish
CHRISTMAS -- John Francis Kordish, age 84, of N7748 Mrs. Claus Lane, Christmas, died on Friday, May 25, 2001 at his home. He was born in Newberry, Michigan on June 9, 1916 to the late Andrew and Gertrude (Maurin) Kordish. John was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the American, European-African-Middle Eastern, and Asiatic Pacific Theaters. He married Mary Magdalene Woodaz on August 9, 1947. John worked in the woods as a logger and at the Atlas Plywood before beginning employment with the Munising Paper Company in 1951. He
retired from Kimberly Clark after twenty-eight years of service in 1979. John was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the American Legion, and a past member of the American Polish Society. John enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and he also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and hiking in the woods.
He is survived by his wife of over fifty-three years, Mary Kordish of Christmas; their seven children - Francis "Johnny" (Cathy) Kordish of Menominee, Robert "Bob" Kordish of Christmas, Anne (Rick) Gumz of Milwaukee, Sandy Kordish of Christmas, Mary Sue
(Scott) Macy of McMinnville, OR, David (Sherry) Kordish of Eben .Tunction, and Rita (Billy) Morrison of Munising; 14 grandchildren; 7 great- grandchildren; brothers - Victor (Naomi) Kordish of Grand Haven and Joseph Kordish of Marquette; sister Sophie (Vernon) Passinault of Munising; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by brothers, Frank, Louis, and Vince Kordish and by a sister, Mary Laurich.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. A parish vigil service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. The funeral will be on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Dennis L. Borca officiating. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising where the Alger County American Legion Honor Guard will conduct graveside services. John will be escorted by his grandsons: David, Ben, Andrew, Ron, and Matt Kordish, Bryan Gumz, Glen Macy, and Corey Morrison.
Albert L. "Abby" Christensen & Mary E. "Mame" Christensen
MARQUETTE -- Graveside services for Albert L. "Abby" Christensen will be held on Friday afternoon, June 1, at 1:00 p.m. at the Holy Cross Cemetery. Mr. Christensen, 77, of 1062 S. Lake Street, Marquette, entered eternal life on January 18, 2001 in Marquette. The following day, Saturday, June 2, a Mass will be celebrated in St. Stephen Catholic Church in Naubinway at 1:00 p.m. for his sister, Mary E. "Mame" Christensen, who entered eteranl life on December 25, 2000 in Marquette. Burial for Mame Christensen wil be made in the Naubinway Cemetery. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.
Audrey C. Marvin
APPLETON -- Audrey C. Marvin, age 82, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Century Oaks Residential Care in Menasha. Audrey was born July 8, 1918 in Minneapolis to the late Ralph and Alma (Krick) Parsons. She is a graduate of Macalester University in St. Paul, MN, and lived in Appleton for the past 15 years. On September 6, 1941, Audrey married John Marvin in Duluth, MN.
Survivors include her husband John, Menasha; 3 daughters: Judith (Robert) Brock, Milwaukee; Cleo Toppen, of Greenville, N.C.; and Lois Lunio, of Perth, Australia; 1 son Edward (Lisa) Marvin, of Waupaca. Further survived by 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents and a brother Ross Parsons.
A Memorial Service for Audrey will be held Thursday, May 31, 2001 at Christ The Rock Church, W6554 Hwy 10-114 Menasha, at 11:00 a.m. with The Rev. Bill Lens officiating. Friends may call directly at the Church on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Eleanor Bower Lukowski
MUNISING -- Eleanor Bower Lukowski, age 68, of 1002 W. Munising Avenue, died on Sunday, May 27, 2001 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising following a lengthy illness. She was born on October 2, 1932 in Melstrand, Michigan to the late Charles and Bertha (Soulier) Bouschor. Eleanor graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School. She married David Lukowski on December 31, 1979. Eleanor worked twenty years at the Munising Memorial Hospital as a nurse's aide. She then owned a operated the Evening Song Adult Foster Care Home, retiring from there in 1993. Following retirement, Eleanor lived in Manistique for five years and returned to Munising after David preceded her in death on October 28, 1999. She was a member of St. Francis de Sales in Manistique, Sacred Heart Church in Munising, and she had been attending the Wesleyan Church with her son and his family. She loved being with her grandchildren, and Eleanor had enjoyed hunting, camping, knitting, traveling and flower gardening.
She is survived by her children- Arthur (Bonnie) Bower of Munising, Cris Bower of Munising, Vicky (Kerry) Sundberg of Rapid River, Connie Bower of Manistique, Gary (Lori) Bower of Memphis, TN, and Terry (Sandy) Bower of Christmas; 13 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; sister- Catherine (Ed) Johnson of Munising; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Eleanor was preceded in death by a son, Dale Bower in 1980, brothers Jack and Jim Bouschor, and a sister, June Edgerton.

Evelyn Onkala
BARAGA -- Evelyn Onkala, age 72, of Baraga, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Bayside Village in L'Anse.
The funeral service will be on Friday, June 1, at 1:00 p.m. at the Zeba Indian Mission United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Indian Pinery Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
Genevieve (Mae) E. Anderson
DULUTH, MINN -- Genevieve (Mae) E. Anderson, age 88, of Duluth, recently of Superior, died on Sunday, May 27, 2001 in Duluth at the home of her daughter, Jody.
Genevieve Sedlock was born July 16, 1912, in Negaunee, Michigan, graduated from Negaunee High School and Northern State Teacher's College, Marquette, Michigan with degrees in English and Music. Before marriage, she was Supervisor of Music in the Escanaba, Michigan public schools an continued in the teaching field after her marriage to Clifford Anderson, also of Negaunee. Music was always a part of Gen's life. She began playing for silent movies when she was a child. Even though she played several string instruments, her real gifts and achievements were on the piano. Forest Service assignments took the Anderson's to several states, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin where Gen was in great demand as a musician in church, school and local affairs. Gen was also a member of the Superior Clef Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford and a brother, Emery.
Genevieve is survived by nine children, John (Mary), Roanoke, VA, David, the Plains, VA, Bob (Mary Evelyn), Centerville, VA, Paul (Lynn) Eau Claire, WI, Tom (Mary), of Superior, Kathy (Pete) Kelley, Stevens Point, WI, Bill (Karen) of Superior, Jody, Duluth, Stephen, Loa Angeles, CA, 17 grandchildren, six great- grandchildren, two brothers, Joe, Negaunee, MI, Ray (Carol), Gwinn, MI, four sisters, Margaret (Silvio), Bessmer, MI, Dorothy (Bill), Fond du Lac, WI, Theresa, Chicago, IL and Mary (Frances) (Bob) of Saginaw, MI.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, from 1:00 until 2 :00 p.m. Memorial Mass in St. Francis Catholic Church, Superior. The Rev. Fr. James Tobolski will officiate. Inurnment will take place in Glidden, WI on Thursday, May 31 at 2:00 p.m.

Gerald C. "Buck" Wendling
MARQUETTE -- Gerald C. "Buck" Wendling, Sr., 71 of 316 Pine Street, Marquette, died peacefully Tuesday morning, May 29, 2001 at home.
Buck was born November 4, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan, a son of Francis and Mildred (Lauda) Wendling. On March 5, 1947 he married the former Elaine Buzzo in Lincoln Park, Michigan and she survives him.
Buck was self-employed as a plasterer & drywaller. He was also a member of the Faith In Christ Fellowship Church and in his spare time enjoyed working with his model trains.
Besides his wife, Elaine, Mr. Wendling is survived by his children, Linda (James) Reuther of McMillan, Gerald C. (Becky) Wendling, Jr. of Trenton, MI, Michele (Leo) Dushane of Gaylord, MI and Harry K. Wendling; a sister, Corinne Palinko of St. Helen, MI; a brother, Kenneth Wendling of River Rouge, MI; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren. His parents and a daughter, Debra Lynn Wendling, preceded him in death.
A funeral service will be held on Friday at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home at 4 P.M. Visitation will be on Friday from 1 PM until the time of the service at the funeral home with the Rev. Wayne DeYoung officiating.

Jayne F. Mahowald
CLEVELAND, OHIO -- Jayne F. Mahowald, 91, a resident of Marquette Michigan until 1991, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at Rae-Ann Suburban Skilled Nursing Facility in Westlake, Ohio. Most recently she had resided in North Olmsted Ohio with her son David.
She was in retail sales at JC Penney's, Montgomery Wards, and Younkers and well known as the one who could "put together an outfit to match a scarf."
She was a lifetime member of the Business and Professional Women's Club and served as President of the Marquette Chapter. For several years she coordinated the Dress A Doll contest sponsored by the First National Bank at Christmas time. She was also President of the Lady Elks for several years.
Jayne F. Mahowald was married to the late Otto F. Mahowald. She is survived by son David M. (Jane) of North Olmsted, Ohio; daughter Dorothy Talerico (John) of Seattle, Washington; sister Patricia Lindquist of Marquette; eleven grandchildren and eighteen
great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Wayne Mahowald, and her daughter, Margaret (Margo) Nowak. She was the sister of the late Margaret Shampine Theobald, Catherine Hughes, Elizabeth "Betty" Erickson, Mary Kramer, Helen Manson, William
Gaspar, John Gaspar, and Edward "Ted" Gaspar. She was the aunt and great aunt of many. Her parents were the late Katherine (Maney) and Peter Gaspar. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Peters Cathedral in Marquette, Michigan August 10, 2001 at 9:30 am. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery with a reception to follow at St. Peter's Hall at 12:00

John M. "Butch" Piskorz
ISHPEMING - John "Butch" Piskorz, age 51 of 201 Poplar St. Ishpeming died on Monday, May 28, 2001 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Butch was born January 10, 1950 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to John & the late Dorothy (LaVake) Piskorz. He grew up in St. Ignace & graduated from LaSalle High School in 1968.
Butch attended various schools, including the Dental Technical School at Wayne State University, the Jacobetti Skill Center where he obtained certificates in welding, refrigeration, heating & air conditioning. He also took part in the millwright apprenticeship training program & for the past several years was employed as a millwright & boilermaker at various power plants, paper mills & for the local mining industry.
Butch was a member of the Michigan Council of Carpenters, Upper Peninsula Local 1510. He was also a member of the Sault Ste. Marie tribe ofthe Chippewa Indians. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming.
Butch enjoyed spending time as a commercial fisherman on the Great Lakes, other hobbies included hunting & gardening. He was an avid sports fan, but his greatest joy was his family.
He married the former Lois A. Solka of Ishpeming on March 22, 1975. He is survived by his wife Lois, daughters Leslie of Marquette and Lindsay at home, and a much loved granddaughter Natalie age 1 1/2. Butch also leaves his father John & step mother Barbara of Cape Coral, FL, his brothers Gary & Alan (Deb) of Boca Raton, FL, Mark (Lee) of Scottsboro, AL, Rick (Heather) of Atlanta, GA & Chris of Cape Coral, FL. He is also survived by several step-siblings, nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Piskorz in 1977.
A memorial service will be held 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Pastor Stephen Rhoades of the First United Methodist Church of Marquette officiating, along with Sister Marge Schmelzle of the Sacred Heart Church of Champion.

Sally A. Myers
NEWBERRY -- Sally A. Myers, 55, of Newberry, died Monday morning May 28, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Michigan following a brief illness.
Born January 28, 1946 in Dearborn, daughter of the late Arthur & Ella (Schaitberger) Atkin. Mrs. Myers was a 1964 graduate of Henry Ford High School in Detroit and a 1968 graduate of Madonna College in Livonia receiving a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Sally was employed at several metropolitan hospitals in the Detroit area before moving to Newberry in the mid 1970's. She continued employment at the former Newberry Regional Mental Health Center as a registered nurse and continued her membership to the Michigan Nurses Association but later devoted her time to raising her eight children. A devoted housewife and homemaker, Sally was active in the Newberry community serving as a former Girl Scout Leader, a 4 - H babysitting club advisor, a substitute teacher and volunteer at the Tahquamenon Area Schools, and formerly serving as a board member of the Newberry Preschool Cooperative. Sally also was active with the First Presbyterian church serving as a choir member, church youth group leader and the women's association.
Besides her parents, Sally is preceded in death by a sister Lois and brother Donald. Survivors include her husband Steven of Marquette; her eight children, Elizabeth of Newberry, Cindy of Grand Rapids, Rebecca of Wyoming, Jennifer and David both of Lansing, John, Heidi and Bret all of Newberry; sister Doris Williamson of Westland, MI.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 2, 2001 at 10:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Newberry with Pastor Bruce Haapalainen officiating. Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry on Friday, June 1st from 5-8 pm.

Sharron Theresa Voet
IONIA -- Sharron Theresa Voet, aged 64 of Ionia succumbed to cancer at her home in lonia on Saturday, May 26, 2001. Her death was after a long and courageous battle with the disease. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends. Her parents, Raymond and Olive December
Sharron Voet, a Registered Nurse, lived her life fully and completely. Her passion for life was, and is, an example to her family and friends. She loved gardening, sewing, nordic skiing, hiking and mountain climbing. She was particularly fond of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, having grown up in Marquette, Michigan. She spent many hours of her retirement involved in her favorite activities while in the "motherland"' as she referred to it.
She was devoted to, and survived by her husband, Kenneth, to whom she was married, and loved deeply, for 46 years.
In addition to the many beautiful flowers in her gardens, she raised and nurtured four devoted children. Sharron is survived by Theresa Marie (Thad) Taylor of Alpena, Kathleen Anne (Frank) Henry of Ionia, Raymond Peter (Barbara) Voet of Iornia, Anthony Giotto (Caren) Voet of Fishers, Indiana. Her seven grandchildren are Ryan and Jenna Taylor of Alpena, Elizabeth, Kenneth. Joseph and Mary Voet of Ionia, and Nicholas Voet of Fishers, Indiana.
Sharron was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Church in Ionia, the Saints Peter and Paul Rosary Circle, The Ionia Garden Club, and the Ionia Hospital Lafayette Guild. She was a member of Saint Michael Church, Marquette. Funeral services will be at l0am
on Saturday, June 2, 2001 at Saints Peter and Paul Church in lonia. A second funeral mass will be at llam on Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at St. Michael's Church in Marquette. Memorials may be made (in lieu of flowers) to the libraries at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School in Ionia, and Saint Michael Catholic School in Marquette. Internment will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette.
Arne A. Metsa
L'ANSE -- Arne A. Metsa, 85, a former Chassell and Gwinn resident, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Bayside Village in L'Anse, where he has been a resident- patient since December of 2000. He also was a resident- patient at Stillwaters Elders Home in Calumet and Shulstads Leisure Living in Baraga.
He was born on July 6, 1915 in Baltic to the late William and Ida (Heikkinen) Metsa. Arne attended Chassell Schools graduating in 1932. He started in M.T.U.'s first Forestry Class in 1936, interrupting his studies to serve in the U.S. Army during WWII in Burma; graduating with honors in 1946 with a B.S. Degree in Forestry. After graduation he held a life long career as a forester with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources retiring in 1975. After retirement, Arne divided his time between his home in Gwinn and his farm in Chassell which he enjoyed.
Arne was a past member of the V.F.W. in Gwinn and the Masonic Lodge, F. & A.M. of Negaunee.
Preceding him in death were 2 brothers, Urho and Paul Metsa, 2 sisters, Aune Carlson and Sylvia Osborn.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Private Memorial Services will be held at a later date.
Interment will be in the Chassell Cemetery.
