Carol Ameen

NEGAUNEE -- Carol Ahmeen, 75, of 43 N. Basin Drive, Negaunee Township, died Tuesday evening, May 29, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital shortly after admittance.

Mrs. Ameen was born November 18, 1925 in Ishpeming to the late Edward and Ruby (Uren) Wood and had been a lifelong Upper Peninsula resident. She enjoyed gardening, walking, picking berries, knitting and being in the outdoors.

Carol's family was the center of her life and she devoted it to being a good wife, mother and grandmother, caring for them until the day she died.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Paul G. Ameen whom she married on June 28, 1947 in Ishpeming; five children, Loren Ameen of Marquette, Vicki Brassard of Marquette, Robert (Lisa) Ameen of Wasilla, AK, Carolyn (Duane) Buoniello of South Hampton, NY and Judi (Todd) Brugman of Marquette; nine grandchildren, Abbie Ameen, Carri and Scott Lantto, Paul Brassard, Quillan, Colin and Alia Buoniella, Andrew and Adam Brugman; one great granddaughter, Mykalia Marie Chapman; two sisters, Fern Jones and Phyllis L'Huillier, both of Pensacola, FL; also surviving are sevearl nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents were siblings, Bernice, James, Hazel, William, Russell, Emily, Thomas and Howard.

Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Stephen Rhoades officiating. Interment will take place in Northland Chapel Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Loren Ameen, Robert Ameen, Todd Brugman, Scott Lantto, Paul Brassard and G. Stuart "Gino" Valente.

Dorothy I. Umbarger

GWINN -- Dorothy I. Umbarger, 70, of 760 W. Ironwood Road, Gwinn, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming where she had been a patient for 10 days. She was in ill health for several days.

She was born April 8, 1931, to the late Arnold and Marie (Beyersdorf) Wendt in Split Rock, WI. Dorothy was a resident of Gwinn since 1947 and graduated from Gwinn High School. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School at one time.

Surviving are one son, Daryl Umbarger of Princeton, one daughter, Vicki Laituri of Princeton, two brothers, Howard (Dorothy) Wendt of Suomi Location and Clyde (Betty) Wendt of Grayslake, IL, one sister, Florence Meyers of San Diego, CA, five grandchildren, Michelle, Gablowski, Theresa Umbarger, Marie Umbarger, Crystal Laituri, and Kerry Laituri and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis, one brother, Ervin Wendt, one sister, Alice Trottier and her parents.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 2, 2001 at 2:00 pm at the Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Nancy Kauppi officiating. Friends may call at the church with 1:00p.m.on Saturday until the time of services. Burial will be in the Gwinn Cemetery. Perala Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sharron Theresa Voet

IONIA -- Sharron Theresa Voet, aged 64 of Ionia succumbed to cancer at her home in lonia on Saturday, May 26, 2001. Her death was after a long and courageous battle with the disease. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends. Her parents, Raymond and Olive December, preceded her in death.

Sharron Voet, a Registered Nurse, lived her life fully and completely. Her passion for life was, and is, an example to her family and friends. She loved gardening, sewing, nordic skiing, hiking and mountain climbing. She was particularly fond of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, having grown up in Marquette, Michigan. She spent many hours of her retirement involved in her favorite activities while in the "motherland"' as she referred to it.

She was devoted to, and survived by her husband, Kenneth, to whom she was married, and loved deeply, for 46 years.

In addition to the many beautiful flowers in her gardens, she raised and nurtured four devoted children. Sharron is survived by Theresa Marie (Thad) Taylor of Alpena, Kathleen Anne (Frank) Henry of Ionia, Raymond Peter (Barbara) Voet of Iornia, Anthony Giotto (Caren) Voet of Fishers, Indiana. Her seven grandchildren are Ryan and Jenna Taylor of Alpena, Elizabeth, Kenneth. Joseph and Mary Voet of Ionia, and Nicholas Voet of Fishers, Indiana.

Sharron was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Church in Ionia, the Saints Peter and Paul Rosary Circle, The Ionia Garden Club, and the Ionia Hospital Lafayette Guild. She was a member of Saint Michael Church, Marquette. Funeral services will be at l0am

on Saturday, June 2, 2001 at Saints Peter and Paul Church in lonia. A second funeral mass will be at

11 am on Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at St. Michael's Church in Marquette. Memorials may be made (in lieu of flowers) to the libraries at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School in Ionia, and Saint Michael Catholic School in Marquette. Internment will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette.

William Gogarn Boucha

MUNISING -- William Gogarn Boucha, age 86, of 220 E. Chocolay Street, Munising, died on Monday, May 28, 2001 at 1:15 p.m. in the Intensive Care Unit of Marquette General Hospital. He was born on January 4, 1915 in Munising to the late Ezra and Justina (Gogarn) Boucha. Bill graduated as a member of the National Honor Society from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1932 and then from Carthage College in 1945 with a Bachelor of Science Degree, majoring in chemistry with minors in math, physics, and music. Bill married Ragnild Johnson on October 27, 1951. She preceded him in death on September 1, 1996. Bill worked at the Munising Woodenware and on August 22, 1955, Bill was hired at Kimberly Clark as a payroll clerk, the job he worked for 6 years; then 1 1/2 years estimating parts sold to other companies and 8 years in charge of payroll and costs. He then went to work in the lab and retired from the Research and Development laboratory of Kimberly Clark with 28 years of service. Bill was a member of hte Grand Island Masonic Lodge and the Ahmed Shrine. He loved music and entertained the community for years playing the horn and tuba as a participant of the Kitchen Kettle Band, the City Band, the Clown Band, and the Dixie Downbeats. In his younger days, Bill put many miles on his bike, often biking to Naubinway and Houghton. He also enjoyed baseball and playing cribbage.

He is survived by his two daughters, Marie and Gary McQuisten of Munising and Harriet and Tom Prunick of Hampton, VA; grandchildren, Tanya (Steve) Borowski, Tara (Casey) Colussi, Tausha McQuisten, Tommy Prunick, and Audrey Prunick; sister, Mariann (Russ) Anderson of California; nieces Nancy, Laura, & Shirley; a nephew, Craig; and his best friends, David Olivier.

Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5:00 until 8:00. Masonic services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. The funeral will be on Friday, June 1, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at the Eden Lutheran Church with Pastors Mary Beth and Kurt Kovanen officiating. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.

Carl Lloyd Robbins
LITTLE LAKE -- Carl Lloyd Robbins, age 73, of 451 N. Farmers Lake Rd., passed away May 30, 2001, at Marquette General Hospital, following his third stroke.

He was born November 11, 1927, in Port Hope, Michigan to G. Lloyd and Mathilda (Hubbard) Robbins and had lived in the Upper Peninsula the past 34 years. Prior to retiring in 1990 he was manager of the Chatham Coop for 18 years. He was an active and involved member of the Little Lake Gospel Chapel.

Carl is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Cronk; they would have been married for 50 years on June 23, 2001. Other survivors include a daughter, Jodie (Phil) Guinn of Elmira, New York; three sons, Jay of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Klay (Sara) of Managua, Nicaragua and Kelly (Christine) of West Bend, Wisconsin; a sister, Mildred Eastlund of Savage, Minnesota; three brothers, Raymond of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Norman of Sandpoint, Michigan, and Howard of St. Lucie, Florida; and nine grandchildren, Heather, Andrea, Philip, Colton, Dru, Alex, Jamie, Elizabeth, and Sara Elizabeth.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, June 3, 2001 in the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with Mr. Jack Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Gwinn Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at the funeral home at 12 noon on Sunday.

Memorials may be directed to the Little Lake Gospel Chapel.

Helen V. Heikkinen Lundstrom

MARQUETTE -- Helen V. Heikkinen Lundstrom, 80, of 7 Marquette Drive, died April 25, 2001 in her home following a lengthy illness.

She was born March 12, 1921 in Palmer, MI to Kalle and Emmi (Sutinen) Heikkinen and was a graduate of the Augustana School of Nursing and the University of Wisconsin. Helen had lived in Marquette the past 16 years and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, PEO, a local bridge group and study club. Her husband George Lundstrom preceded her in death in December.

Survivors include a daughter Mary Lundstrom Collins of Colorado Springs, CO, a brother Allen (Helmi) Heikkinen of Negaunee, six grandchildren; Kellen, Lauren and Logan Collins, Eyre and Blake Becker and Katherine Reich, and one great grandchild Elizabeth Amelia Reich.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 9, 2001 at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with Ms. Cindy Saul, intern at the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Visitation will begin at the funeral home one hour prior to services with coffee following the service at the Lundstrom home.

Richard S. "Dinky" Harvala

ISHPEMING -- Richard S. "Dinky" Harvala, age 83, of 1710 Southwood Dr. Ishpeming passed away on Friday, June 1, 2001 at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he had resided for the past 16 1/2 months.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, June 4, 2001 at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki and Rev. C. Bruce Ulstad to officiate.

Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 5 until 8PM on Sunday, and again on Monday from 10 until 11 AM at the Bethel Lutheran Church.

Harold E. "Harry" Lusardi
ROCK -- Harold E. "Harry" Lusardi, age 67, of 14510 Chapel Lane, Rock, died Friday evening June 1, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital.

He was born July 3, 1933 in Lathrop, MI the son of Emil Lusardi and the former Ella Kimmel and was a lifelong Rock area resident. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict.

Harry was employed as a sheet metal worker much of his working life, and was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local #007.

He was also a member of St. Joseph Church of Perkins, Rock and Little Lake American Legions, Rock Lions Club, and a former member of the Rock Sportsman Club.

Harry enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and camping and especially enjoyed spending time with his dog. "Curly Jo".

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Todd Lusardi, in 2000, and by a brother, Robert,.

Survivors incude his wife, the former Leah M. Rock, whom he married in 1959 in Gwinn. 3 sons, Scott (Jo Anne) Lusardi of Rock, Tim (Beyonka) Lusardi of Warren, MI, Mike (Liberty) Lusardi of Rock, 1 daughter, Marci (Charles) Paulsen of Perkins, 5 sisters, Joyce Sobbry of Elk Rapids, MI, Eileen (Erwin) Ferdon, Jr., of Marinette, Shirley (Richard) LePerriere of Menominee, Thelma Lowery of LaCrosse, WI, Patricia (Wayne) Rolf of Colorado, 10 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family of Harold E. "Harry" Lusardi will receive friends on Tuesday at the Skradski Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. wtih military rites being conducted by the Rock American Legion at 5:45p.m. Funeral Services will follow on Tuesday at St. Joseph Church in Perkins at 7:00p.m. with Rev. Fr. Emmitt Norden officiating. Luncheon will follow services in the parish hall. Burial will be in the Rock Cemetery. The Skradski Funeral Home of Delta County are assisting the family.

Pauline (St. Onge, DeVooght) Koepp

HARVEY -- Pauline E. Koepp, 75, of 6244 US 41 South, Harvey, was called to heaven at her home on June 2, 2001 with her family present. Her death followed a courageous four-year battle with cancer. She will be missed dearly by family and friends alike. Her passion for life will always be an example to those touched by her. Pauline was an avid card player (especially cribbage) and participated in several local leagues, most recently the Senior Citizens' Cribbage League. She loved crafts and gardening, as was obvious in her constantly manicured lawn and flower beds. In addition to these hobbies and exploring the UP with her family during weekend drives, Pauline enjoyed doing the Jitterbug with her husband, Albert. Pauline was the first daughter of the late Russell and Edna (Carpenter) St. Onge. She was born in Iron Mountain on April 26, 1926. Before marrying her first husband, Albert DeVooght, she worked as a seamstress in a local dress shop. She was widowed in 1948, but was able to support her 5-month old daughter by maintaining a daycare in her home for three years until beginning employment at the Marquette Veneer Plant and the Munising Wood Products (Piqua). Following her marriage to Albert Koepp in 1965, Pauline worked in food service at NMU, as a nurse's

aide at the Orchard Rest Home, and again in food service at the Garden Room Restaurant. In her later years, she made crafts for bazaars at St. Louis the King Parish and volunteered as a cook and server at St. Peter's community dinners. Pauline is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann and Elwin (Hooper) Lamirand of Harvey; grandchildren, Kimberlie Pasanen of Green Bay, Wisconsin and Thomas Lamirand of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; great granddaughter, Krista Feltner of Marquette; three sisters, Bernice (Clyde) Anderson of Negaunee Township, Marilyn (James) Kramer of Houston, Texas, and Joyce (Michael) Kaleel of Detroit; brothers Russell Jr (Arlie) St. Onge of Skandia, Carl (Lois) St. Onge of Harvey, and Alvin (Jac'que) St. Onge of Friendship, Wisconsin; sisters/ brothers- in-law, Alice St. Onge of Venice, Florida, Jean St. Onge of Beaver Grove, Philomena (Tillie) LaFave of Canton, Michigan, Rene (Estelle) DeVooght of Beaver Grove, Leona Antcliff, Dorothy (Harold) Rudduck, Ione Koepp, and Carl Koepp all of Marquette; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Pauline to heaven were her parents; first husband, Albert Frank DeVooght; daughter, Carol Jean; second husband, Albert Koepp; and brothers, Donald, Arnold, Eugene, and Wallace St. Onge. The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Louis the King Catholic Church, 264 Silver Creek Road, Harvey, on Tuesday, June 5, beginning at 1:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in the church with Rev. Guy Thoren, pastor, as celebrant. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall. Inurnment will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum. William J. Andrews

GWINN -- William J. Andrews, 87, 247 South Johnson Lake Road, Gwinn, died on Saturday, June 2, 2001 at his home.

Bill was born Dec. 10,1913 in Ishpeming to William & Ethel (Bettison) Andrews and was a graduate of Ishpeming High School. He married Mildred Palomaki on Oct. 25,1937. The couple lived in Ishpeming and moved to Gwinn where they resided from 1942-46, returned to Ishpeming until moving to their Johnson Lake home in 1973. They enjoyed winters in Marco Island, FL for many years. Bill worked for several years as a parts man for the Sundblad Garage, for CCI as a mine clerk for 17 years, and in 1958 he joined Wadell & Reed, Inc. as a financial advisor. He retired in 1998 with 40 years of service with the company. A professional musician, Bill was an accomplished and well known drummer. He started his first band, the Billy Andrews Cavaliers, as a freshman in high school. He played in many bands in his long music career, most recently with the Mel Syria Trio and Ray Adamini & Friends.

Mr. Andrews was a member of the Gwinn United Methodist Church and was a 33rd Degree Mason.

Surviving are one son, John Maki, Gwinn, 1 sister, Lousia Johnson, Marquette, a niece, Donna Jean Johnson, Chandler, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mildred in 1999 and a sister Miriam.

A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 PM on Wednesday at the Gwinn United Methodist Church with Rev. Jackie Roe officiating. Interment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. The family will greet friends following the service in the Church Hall.

Memorials may be directed to the Gwinn United Methodist Church Endowment Fund in memory of Bill & Mildred Andrews.

Aili Irene Revord
EBEN -- Aili Irene Revord, age 89, of Eben, died on Friday, June 1, 2001 at 12:45 p.m. at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born on January 20, 1912 in Finland to the late Issac and Hulda (Makkela) Leppanen. She came to the United States as an infant and resided most of her life in the Eben area. Aili married Norman Edward Revord on April 25, 1936. They were married over fifty-six years before he preceded her in death on September 7, 1992. She was a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church in Trenary and a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters- Patricia and Warren Gronseth of Franklin, WI and Karen and Paul Maino of Negaunee; grandchildren Dawn Pethke, Shawn Gronseth, Staci Joers, Bart Maino, Tricia Anderson, and Vince Maino; and 9 great- grandchildren. Aili was also preceded in death by sisters, Fannie Wickstrom, Vilma Dallas, and Viola Leppanen, and brothers, Willard and Wilho Leppanen.

Private family services will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home and intermenty will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham.

Delphine Selma "Lolita" Johnson, 86, of 1518 Lincoln Ave., Marquette, was called to her eternal home by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Monday morning at Marquette General Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Swanson Lundquist Funeral Home,

Donald Ballentine

LANSING -- Mr. Donald Ballentine, former Marquette resident, beloved husband, father, and brother, passed away peacefully at his home on June 4, 2001 with family by his side. Born Feb. 20, 1935 in Worcester, MA to Phillip & Viola Ballentine, Don will be remembered for the extraordinary compassion he demonstrated throughout his life. After graduating with degrees from Holy Cross and Notre Dame, Don first came to Lansing to obtain a Master's of Social Work from Michigan State University, which he completed in 1965. Early in his career, he was a social worker for Catholic Social Services and Director of Family Services in Lansing. He left the area in 1973 to become Director of Catholic Social Services in Marquette, MI. In 1981, Don returned to Lansing after being named Executive Director of Catholic Social Services. During Don's tenure, Catholic Social Services greatly expanded its service to the community by merging with St. Vincent Home for Chilldren and adding a variety of programs, including the Intergenerational Community Center & Ballentine Stepping Stones. Don retired in 2000 to enjoy life with Patty, his loving wife of 40 yrs. Don's devotion and humor will also be missed by his sister, Sr. Janet Ballentine of Leicester, MA; His children, Beth (Jerry) Bartlett of Marquette, MI, Kathi (Alan) Schachman of O'Fallon, IL, Linda (Alex) Herandez of Lansing; & Cris (Chad) Kooyer of Grand Rapids; His grandchildren, Alicia & Rachel Bartlett, Sarah & David Schachman, Ryan Soucy & Carly Hernandez, & Nicholas & Jacob Kooyer; His many friends; & numerous others whose lives have been touched by his generous spirit. NEGAUNEE -- Helen E. Phillips, 85 formerly of 100 Karhi Road, Negaunee died Saturday, May 19, 2001 at Heartland House in Wautoma, WI where she had resided since January, 2001.

Mrs. Phillips was born Sept. 27, 1915 in Ishpeming to Richard & Emma Anderson and was a graduate of Ishpeming in High School, Class of 1934. She married Joseph C. Phillips on May 4, 1935 in Negaunee. The couple lived in Negaunee for 65 years before moving to Wautoma. Helen was an active member of the Negaunee Male Chorus Auxiliary.

Surviving are her husband Joseph C. Phillips, Wautoma, one daughter, Kristine Kaski, Neshkoro, WI, three grandchildren, Joseph (Jennifer) Kaski, Cedar Hills, TX, Jeffrey Kaski, Oshkosh, WI, Kristine (David) Zedler, Pottsboro, TX, 4 great grandchildren; David Phillips Zedler, Robert Allan Zedler, Rebecca Kristine Zedler, Kristen Marie Kaski, one brother, Jack (Charlotte) Anderson, Ishpeming, several nieces, nephews, in-laws & friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Joseph Clayton Phillips, Jr., two brothers, William & Robert Anderson, one sister, Dorothy Piirto.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 7, 2001 at the Koskey Funeral Home. Rev. Virginia Peacock, Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, Negaunee will officiate. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
