Helmi Lundstrom Heikkinen
NEGAUNEE -- Helmi Heikkinen, 83, 1101 Owaissa Street, Negaunee, died at her home on June 3, 2001. She was born May 20, 1918, in Republic, Michigan, to Kalle and Amalia Lundstrom. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Henry, Charles, John, Hugo and George.
She is survived by her husband, Allen Helge Heikkinen, at home; son Steven (Kaye Hiebel) Heikkinen, Marquette and his children Emmi Heikkinen of Kimberly, WI, and Harley Heikkinen, Ishpeming; daughter Kristen (Len Ganz) Heikkinen, Auburn, CA; daughter Carol (Barrie) Williams and their children Amelia, Helena, and Mary of Paris, France; brother Martti (Shirley) Lundstrom, Arizona; many nephews and nieces.

Ina I. Ranta
MARQUETTE -- Ina I. Ranta, 77, of 1024 Cleveland Ave., died Sunday, June 3, 2001 at the Norlite Nursing Center where she had resided for the past year.
She was born February 10, 1923 in Palmer, MI to the late Herman and Wilhelmina (Stanrose) Ranta and had lived in this area since 1937. Prior to retiring she worked at St. Luke's Hospital (later Marquette General Hospital) for 39 years. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.
Ina is survived by a sister Elma Ruotsala of Negaunee, a brother John Ranta of Marquette a niece Joann Coluccio & nephews John, William & Gary Wainio. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother Elmer.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at 1:00 PM in the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Weber officiating. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Mildred "Milly" M. Bertucci
ISHPEMING -- Mildred "Milly" M. Bertucci, age 69 of 501 N. Second St. Ishpeming passed away, Sunday, June 3, 2001 at her home after being in declining health for the past several months.
Milly was born February 10, 1932 in Ishpeming to the late Emil & Jennie (Hankanen) Manty. She was a life long area resident. Milly worked for over 20 years at Stein's Clothing & The Style Shop.
Milly was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, presently serving on the Church Council, and active in the Bible Study group. She was a member of the AMVETS & American Legion Auxiliaries where she was serving as Chaplain. She enjoyed camping.
Milly is survived by 2 sons; Joe (Paulette) Nardi and Steve (Marsha) Nardi both of Ishpeming, 2 sisters; Ruth Jarvi of Muskegon, MI and Alyce Jean (Robert) Grabowski of Escanaba, 2 grandchildren James (Heather) Ogea of Marquette and Chelsea Nardi of Ishpeming, numerous nieces and nephews and a special friend of 20 years Jack Letcher. She was preceded in death by her first husband Joe Nardi, her second husband Victor Bertucci, a daughter Susan Ogea, a sister Ina Carlson, 3 brothers Walter, Albert & Martin Manty.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at the Faith Lutheran Church with the Rev. Virginia Eggert.
Friends may call at the Faith Lutheran Church on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service where the Greenwood American Legion Post Auxiliary will hold a memorial service at 12 noon. Pallbearers will be Bruce & Peter Manty, Pat Gingrass, Arlin "Buzzy" Violetta, Edward Ogea, and Harry Smith.

Nathalia (Nath) I. Niemi
GREEN BAY, WI -- Nathalia I. Niemi, 76, Green Bay, died Friday, June 1, 2001, after recently battling a series of various illnesses. Born on February 25, 1925, in Green Bay, to Ora and Ruby Nyholm. Nath married William I. Niemi on May 2, 1942. Nath and William moved to Baltimore, Maryland and numerous other places before settling in Sundell, Michigan. There, they raised 4 children. While in Michigan's U.P., Nath was Postmaster and operated the Sundell Grocery. Upon William's death in 1967, she movd to Green Bay. There, Nath was employed at various restaurants/ taverns. She made numerous friends as she was a natural in the 'people' business. Nath volunteered at The Curative Work Shop and also at The Cerebral Palsy Center in Green Bay. She loved arts/ crafts and most of all BINGO. She most recently resided at Badger Terrace Apts.
She is survived by 3 sons, William and his wife Mary, of Amery, WI, Robert and his wife Judie, of Eben Jct, MI, and Steven and his wife Kristi, of Cedarburg, WI. One son-in-law, Dewey Decker and numerous grandchildren, Carla, Dale, James, Melissa, Joe, Calli and one great grandchild, Sarah.
Preceded in death by husband William, mother Ruby, and daughter Sandy.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Pfotenhauer Funeral Home in Howard. Burial will take place at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham, MI.
Orissa K. Anderson
ISHPEMING -- Orissa K. Anderson, age 86, died June 3, 2001. Born March 1, 1915 in Ishpeming and was a longtime resident.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Alterra Clare Bridge of Meridian for their care and friendship.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Leroy Anderson (1984). Surviving are 2 daughters, Kristen (George) Cassavaugh of Birmingham, MI and Lorel K. (Tom) Evans of Bath, MI; 2 grandchildren, Kristian Evans of Burnsville, MN and Kurt Evans of Bath, MI; 1 sister, Genevieve Nelson, formerly of Ishpeming. Graveside services will be held at a later date in Ishpeming. In memory of Orissa, please spend a little time with someone with memory loss. The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Robert J. Songer
VENICE, FL.- Robert James Songer, 76, of Venice, FL. went to be with the Lord on Saturday
evening, June 2, 2001, at Bon Secours Hospital where he had been a patient for five weeks. He was born in St. Paul, Mn. to Herbert and Ruby (MacTaggart) Songer. Mr. Songer spent his childhood in Pontiac, Mi. He served his country during World War II in Germany, France and Belgium in the U.S. Army as a glider pilot. He graduated from the University of Michigan with degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering. During his college years, he married Carolyn L. Newberg of Ludington, Mi. on Aug. 28, 1948. Employment took Mr. Songer and his family to Flint, Mi. and suburban Chicago, IL. where he lived until retirement in Venice, Fl. in 1996. Mr. Songer co-founded Pioneer Surgical Technology in Marquette with his son, Dr. Matthew Songer.
Robert Songer is survived by his wife Carolyn of almost 53 years, 3 daughters- Laurie (Dan) Songer Short, Heather (Jim) Karl, and Holly (Randy) Raak, I son, Matthew (Laura) Songer MD, and 10 grandchildren, Adam, Sarah and Nathan Short, Jason, Marcus and Linnea Songer, and Aaron, Zachary, Madelyn and Rachel Raak. Preceding him in death were his parents and his brother, Bruce Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 9, 2001 at 2 PM at the Community Church of Ludington, Mi. where the Songers were married. Dorrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington, Mi.
Emma M. Raboin
DAGGETT -- Emma A. Raboin, 64, of Daggett went home to be with her Lord on Monday June 4, 2001 at the home of her daughter in Kirkland, IL. Emma was born April 14, 1937 to the late Ellen (Simons) and Arno Dorow in Marquette, MI. She graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1957 with a Home Econominics Degree. In December of 1958 Emma married
George Raboin, he preceded her in death August 9, 1998. In her teaching career she taught in Stephenson, Carney, Ontonagon, Gladstone, and Menominee Schools. Then in 1988 she became the Director of the Neighborhood Family Center in Stephenson. Emma was an active member of the Carney Evangelical Free Church.
Emma is survived by four daughters, Linda (Tim) Parthie of Marinette, Penny (David) Damiani of Kirkland IL, Sandy (Jay) Rud of Sandwich IL, and Kathleen (Mark) Grzelak of Forest Park IL. Ten grandchildren, Andrea, Robby, Tiffany, Tasha, Tanya, Jackson, Dustin, Logan, Christopher, and Megan and one great grandson. Two sisters, Mary Dombrowski of Daggett, and Betty Gustafson of Marquette. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold Murphy, Edward and William Dorow.
Visitation will be Thursday June 7, 2001 after 4PM at the Anderson Diehm Funeral Home Stephenson. Funeral service will be Friday at 11AM at the Carney Evangelical Free Church Carney. Emma will lie in state from 10AM until service time. Reverend Rich Blum officiating. Burial will be in the Carney Free Church Cemetery.

Frances J. DeLongchamp
NEGAUNEE -- Frances J. DeLongchamp, 77, a resident of Montgomery, AL, died on Monday June 4, 2001 in Montgomery after a short illness. Frances was born Dec. 24, 1923 in Green Bay, WI to Godfrey & Celina (St. Antoine) Trotochaud and was a graduate of Negaunee St. Paul High School, Class of 1942. She lived the majority of her life in Negaunee and was a former employee of the Style Shop, Ishpeming.
She is survived by her loved husband, Lawrence, her beloved children; Col. R. Dean (Sylvia) DeLongchamp, Ret., of Montgomery, AL, Bobbi (Clark) Sullivan of Swartz Creek, MI, Debbie Jacobetti of Michigamme, and Scott DeLongchamp of Indianapolis, IN, her most loved grandchildren; Michael (Cindy) DeLongchamp, Michelle (Tim) Roberson, Melissa DeLongchamp, Sean DeLongchamp, Dominic Jacobetti, Ill, Tony Jacobetti, Julie Jacobetti, Traci Jacobetti, Zachary DeLongchamp, and Sarah DeLongchamp, great grandchildren; Grayson Marie and Hannah Lee Roberson. James F. Jurmu
NEGAUNEE -- James F. Jurmu, age 65, of 1104 Maple St., Negaunee died Monday evening, June 4, 2001 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Jim was born Oct. 8, 1935 in Mohawk to Charles & Sigrid (Kurtti) Jurmu and was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1953. He attended Michigan Technological University and earned a bachelor of science degree in Mining Engineering in 1957. Following his graduation from MTU he served in the U.S. Army. He worked for U.S. Steel before joining Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. in 1963. He held various positions for CCI in Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana, and Canada including Mine Manager of the Tilden Mine and the General Superintendent of the Empire Mine prior to his retirement in 1994. Jim also served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Negaunee for over 13 years.
Mr. Jurmu was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee. He was a member of the Negaunee Elks Lodge, the Negaunee Lions Club, and the Central U.P. Steelheaders Association. He was a former member of several engineering associations including the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and the Society of Mining Engineers. He was an avid fisherman & hunter and loved to play duplicate bridge.
Surviving are his wife, Delores K. (Normali), 1 daughter, Joanne L. Jurmu, Alexandria, VA, 2 sons; Michael C. Jurmu, Negaunee, Robert J. (Toni) Jurmu, Marquette, 2 grandchildren; Hannah Rose Jurmu & Sarah Elizabeth Jurmu, 3 sisters; Ruth (Harvey) Uitto, Florence, S.C., Irma (Melvin) Besola, Gwinn, Nancy (John) Johnson, Allen Town, MI, an aunt, Millie Lelvis, Marquette and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Elaine Carpenter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 PM on Thursday at St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee with Rev. Lawrence Gauthier officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Pallbearers will be; Bernard Regan, Anthony Kroncich, Ronald Laitinen, David Stromquist, Raymond Lindstrom, & Leslie Melka. Honorary Pallbearers will be; Harry Klieman, Jerry Ekdahl, Ronald Kauppila, & Frank Truchan.
Friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 5-8 PM on Wednesday. A parish prayer service will be held there at 7:45 PM led by Sr. JoAnn Jauquet. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the service on Thursday.

Robert Cook
PRUDENVILLE, MI -- Robert E. Cook, 73, of Prudenville, died early Tuesday morning, June 5, 2001 at the home of his daughter, Karen, in Trenary after a short illness.
Mr. Cook was born April 5, 1928 at Mount Rose, Michigan to the late Asa and Marie (Cowles) Cook. He was a 1946 graduate of Houghton Lake High School. On February 7, 1948, he married the former Pauline A. Rising and together they recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary.
Robert retired from Consumers Power Company in 1984 after a long career with them. He was also retired from the Denton Township Volunteer Fire Department as Fire Chief.
He was a member of St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church in Higgins Lake and Houghton- Higgins Lake Elks Lodge #1982. In his spare time, Robert loved to hunt and fish.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline A. Cook of Prudenville; two daughters, Karen (Michael) MacLachlin of Trenary, MI and Brenda (James) Finch of PennYan, NY; two grandchildren, Christa (Michael) Cook- Chiaurro of Edwardsville, IL and Andrew Finch of PennYan, NY; one great grandson, Anthony Chiaurro; also several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death besides his parents were siblings, Leslie Cook and Bernita Chandler.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2001 at St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church in Higgins Lake at 11 a.m. with Pastor Carl Heidel and Pastor James Cousineau officiating. There will be no visitation.

Edward Carl Farley
ISHPEMING - Edward Carl Farley age 83 of 818 N. Pine St. Ishpeming passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he has resided for the past 14 months.
Ed was born April 2, 1918 in Ishpeming to the late Henry & Lily (Larson) Farley. He was a life long area resident.
Ed worked as a miner at the Lloyd Mine, and worked for the City of Ishpeming for 26 years. He became Superintendent of Public Works in 1962, retiring in 1980. Ed served on the Ishpeming City Council for 6 years, serving as Mayor in 1982, 1983 and again in
1986. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church. Ed was an avid fisherman.
Ed is survived by his wife of 47 years, Phyllis (Hendrickson) Farley, 2 children: Ruth (Vance) Maki, and Peter Farley both of Ishpeming, a sister Betty (Elliott) Maki of Cleveland, OH, 2 grandchildren Melissa and Marc Maki, 3 nieces, 4 nephews, a brother in law and sister in law Hollis & Lois Hendrickson of Minneapolis, MN. He was preceded in death by a daughter Susan Farley and a brother Henry Farley.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00p.m. Friday, June 8, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Harmon officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Charles E. "Chuck" Mackey
CHAMPION -- Charles E. "Chuck" Mackey, age 81 of 4126 Co. Rd. FA, Humboldt Twp., passed away Thursday, June 7, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he had been a patient for 1 day and had been in ill health for the past several years.
Charles was born December 7, 1919 in Virginia, MN to the late Matt and Lola (Castern) Mackey Sr., and moved to this area in his youth. Charles served in the United States Army with the 962nd Engineers Maintenance Co. during World War II, having been in battles in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes. He worked as a construction worker for many years with the Labor Union #1329, retiring in the mid-1970's.
Charles was a member of the American Legion #114 and the V.F.W. #4573. His grandchildren were the highlight of his life, along with his enjoyment of hunting, fishing, and watching sporting events.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years Geraldine Mackey of Humboldt; 2 daughters- Gayle (Douglas) Vickers of Hazel Park, MI and Catherine (James) Davey of Ishpeming; a sister Dorothy (Fred) Brawley of Humboldt; a sister in law Aili Mackey of Ishpeming; 4 grandchildren- Shane (Martha) Vickers, Randy Vickers, Douglas (Diana) Vickers and Jason Dulany; 3 great grandchildren- Sandra, Matthew and Samantha; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter Sarah Dulany, a brother Matt Mackey Jr. and a sister Gertrude Norton.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday June 9, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Burial will be in the Humboldt Twp. Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Saturday June 9, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Charles' grandsons and his sons-in-law.
Delphine Selma Lolita Johnson
MARQUETTE -- Delphine Selma Lolita Johnson, 86, of 1518 Lincoln Ave., Marquette, was called to her eternal home by Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at Marquette General Hospital on June 4, 2001.
Lolita was born February 2, 1915, in Ishpeming to Peter and Selma (Holmgren) Nelson. She married Leonard E. Johnson at the Messiah Lutheran Church parsonage. Always a hard worker, Lolita was a banquet supervisor at Northern Michigan University for twenty-five years. Lolita truly loved her job at Northern. To her, it was her second home. Her golden rule at N.M.U. was to serve others as she would want to be served. Upon her retirement, Lolita was severely handicapped and wheelchair-bound, yet she traveled hundreds of thousands of miles, through rain, sleet, or snow. She was always ready to go for a ride. She traveled extensively throughout the Upper Peninsula, Northern Wisconsin, Northern Minnesota, and Canada. She especially enjoyed her summer excursions to Mackinac Island. Lolita loved to listen to the Detroit Tigers and "Packer" games on the radio. She loved the family cats, Sissy Carl and Margaret.
Lolita is survived by a sister, Mrs. Leonard (Bonita) O'Dette of Kingsford; two sons, Douglas (Mary) Johnson of Marquette and Fredrick Johnson of Kingsford; four daughters, Judy (Joe) Gregorich, Pauline, Rebecca, and Lorraine Johnson, all of Marquette; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard on October 25, 1968 and by a granddaughter, Patricia Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church on Saturday, June 9, 2001 at 7:00 pm with Reverend Nancy Amacher and Reverend Jon Magnuson officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at the Messiah Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Park Cemetery. Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
This vivacious, energetic, beautiful, and stylish lady who could not walk, talk, nor see will be remembered by anyone who had the privilege of knowing this courageous woman. And now... a place is set for her at the table of the Lord Jesus Christ. We love you, Mom!
