Leonard I. Cole
GERMFASK -- Leonard I. Cole, age 63, of Route #1, Box 15C, Germfask died June 6, 2001 at his home.
He was born September 26, 1937 in Germfask, the son of Fred "Ike" and Ethel "Ruby" (Ostrander) Cole. He attended schools in Germfask and Manistique.
On February 22, 1957, he married Gladys Q. Evans in Manistique.
Leonard lived in Rochester, Michigan for 20 years, where he was employed with General Motors and returned to Germfask, where he owned and operated the Cole Trucking Company. He was a member of the Germfask Mennonite Church.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys of Germfask; two sons, Harry (Sue) Cole of Dryden, MI and Leonard (Becky) Cole of Berkley, MI; two daughters, Cindy (Jim) Daniels of Gaines, MI and Annette Cole of Germfask; one brother, Gerald (Maureen) Cole of Germfask; two sisters, Mary (Alvin) Richards of Newport, WA and Rosetta (Fred) Evans of Lupton, MI; eight grandchildren, one great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Cole and Vernon Cole and three sisters, Arbutus Havens, Geraldine Skenes and Betty Lou Cole.
Visitation will be at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm on Friday June 8, 2001. Funeral Services will follow at 4:00 pm with Pastor J.D. Livermore, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Christian Memorial Cemetery in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

Sylvia Esther (nee) Aho Nelson
SUNDELL -- Sylvia Esther (nee) Aho Nelson, age 92, of N. Sundell Road, died on Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at her home in Sundell. She was born on November 22, 1908 in Perho, Finland to the late Charles and Selma Aho. Sylvia came to the United States and Michigan in 1911. On June 11, 1929, she married Richard Nelson. They were married over sixty-four years before he preceded her in death on January 29, 1994. Sylvia enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, sewing, and playing cards.
She is survived by: four sons- Richard Jr. (Mary) Nelson of Sundell, Edwin (Carolyn) Nelson of Eben, William (Bonnie Barnett) Nelson, and Robert (Joyce) Nelson of Southfield; 3 daughters- Marina (Frank) Krajewski of Munising, Rita (Rodney) Le Maire of Sundell, Sharon (Herbert) Burdick of Marquette; 22 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; three brothers- Charles (Marie) Aho of AuTrain, Leslie (Thelma) Aho of Thompson, MI and George (Barbara) Aho of Clearwater, FL; one sister- Lillian Senical; sister-in-law- Alice Aho of Dearborn; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Sylvia was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Nelson in 1957, a daughter-in-law, Jenny Nelson, brothers and sister-in-law- William, John, and Raymond (Jennie) Aho, and sisters and brothers-in-law- Martha (Vern) Lassila, Elna (Chester) Morin, Helen (Earl) Senical, and Ralph Senical.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Saturday, June 9, 2001 from 9:00 am until the time of the funeral service. Pastors Kurt V. and Mary Beth Kovanen will conduct the funeral in the funeral home chapel on Saturday at 10:30 am. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham.
Ture L. Johnson
BURTON TOWNSHIP -- Ture L. Johnson, distinguished forester, respected forester, honored maple syrup promoter, cherished husband., father, and grandfather passed away on June 5, 2001 at the Briar Hill Nursing Home. He was 87 years old.
Ture was born in Gwinn, Michigan and graduated from Gwinn High School in 1931. He attended Northern Michigan University and graduated from the Michigan State University school of forestry in 1937. In 1945 he came to Ohio to become one of the first three farm foresters in Ohio.
Mr. Johnson served his community in many capacities during his life. He coached the Burton High School basketball team and volunteered as a fireman with the Burton Volunteer Fire Department. He was an officer and founding member of the Berkshire Athletic Booster Club where he was instrumental in establishing a lighted football field with stadium seating and a concession stand. He directed and coached many youth league ball teams for boys and girls and worked to improve the Boy Scout and Camp Fire Girls programs. He served in every capacity from janitor to deacon in the Burton Congregational Church and was a member of the Burton Chamber of Commerce for 50 years. He served on the Geauga Maple Festival Board for over 40 years. For the greater community Mr. Johnson helped to organize the Ohio Christmas Tree Growers Association, Inc. and the National Maple Syrup Council in 1960. In his spare time. Mr. Johnson planted well over one million trees of various species in Northeastern Ohio over a period of 35 years.
During Mr. Johnson's active life of community service he was proud to be honored for his efforts. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award from the National Committee of the Boy Scouts of America in 1963, the Burton Distinguished Service Award in 1965, the Governor of the State of Ohio's award for Outstanding Contributions to Conservation in 1970, the State of Ohio Foresters Award in 1971, the Outstanding Christmas Tree Growers Award in 1973, the Ohio Society of American Foresters award in 1973, the State of Ohio employee of the month award in 1980, and was inducted into the National Maple Syrup Hall of Fame in Grogdan, New York at the National Maple Syrup Museum in 1980. Mr. Johnson was pleased to have been instrumental in establishing Tree City USA designations for many cities in Northeastern Ohio including Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights. Mr. Johnson was also a member of the Village Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons.
In addition to his wife Erma, survivors include his children, Curt (Kathy) of Burton, Alan (MaryJane) of Solon, JoAnn Hiscox (Jerry) of Burton and his grandchildren, Megan Zeliznak (Jeft) of Parma, Karen Johnson of Cleveland, Brian and Kayla Hiscox of Burton. Wesley A. Marttila
COVINGTON -- Wesley A. Marttila, age 77, of Covington, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on December 25, 1923 in Hancock, MI, son of the late John and Aili (Rajala) Marttila. He grew up in Covington and graduated from L'Anse High School. Wesley was in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he was on the 20th Hospital Train in Europe. He married the former Ann Niemela on September 4, 1954 in Covington. He worked for CCI for 34 years, retiring in 1986. Wesley was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Henry Hendrickson VFW Post #8945 in Covington, and the American Legion Post #144 in L'Anse.
Survived are his wife Ann of Covington; two sons Alan (Cheryl) Marttila of Waukegan, IL, Michael (Terry) Marttila of Gurnee, IL; one daughter Julie (Pat) Presley of Gilbert, AZ; one granddaughter, Amanda Presley of Gilbert, AZ; one sister, Jane Clement of Waukegan, IL; and several cousins.
He is preceded in death by one sister Ruth Sefton.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2001, at 10:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Covington. Rev. Mark Reinsch will officiate. Burial will be in the Covington Cemetery, with military grave side services. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
Connie Lynn Bohlen
DANVILLE, IA -- Mrs. Connie Lynn Bohlen, age 57, of Danville, IA, passed away at New London Nursing and Rehab in New London, IA on Friday, June 8, 2001 at 5:50 AM. She was born on September 4, 1943 in Marquette, Michigan to the late Bill and Evelyn Parsons. She was a graduate of Marquette High School, Class of 1961. Connie was a homemaker and member of the First Baptist Church of Danville, IA.
She is survived by her husband, Dean Bohlen of Danville, IA; 2 sons, Brian W. Bohlen, Burlington, IA and Tracy D. Bohlen, Danville, IA; 1 grandson and 1 granddaughter; and a brother, Stuart "Skip" Parsons of Marquette, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David Bohlen; and a sister, Patricia. Funeral services will be at the First Baptist Church in Danville, IA on Monday, June 11, 2001 at 10:30 AM with Paster Harry Hollingsworth to officiate. Interment will be at the Prairie Grove Cemetery, West Burlington, IA. Friends may call after 9:00 AM and 5:00- 8:00 PM on Sunday, June 10th at the Lunning Chapel in Burlington, IA. Delphine Selma "Lolita" Johnson
MARQUETTE -- Delphine Selma "Lolita" Johnson, 86, of 1518 Lincoln Ave., was called to her eternal home by Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at Marquette General Hospital on June 4, 2001. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM today at Messiah Lutheran Church with funeral service to follow at 7:00 PM. Interment will be in Park Cemetery. In addition to her husband, Leonard and granddaughter Patricia Johnson, Lolita was also preceded in death by her sister Mrs. Harold (Gwendolyn) "DaDa" Herlich, Sr. and brothers Lawrence, Alvin, Theofil, Glenn "Kelly" and Ted Nelson. Gertrude Howse
MURPHY, NC - Gertrude Howse, 87, of Murphy, NC, died Friday May 25, 2001 at her residence. A native of Republic, MI, she had lived in Murphy since 1940. She was the daughter of the late Victor J. and Siina (Luoma) Makela and the wife of the late James C. Howse. She was a retired loan officer at Wachovia Bank and was a member of the B.P.W. Club, Wesley Women and the Murphy First United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Patricia W. Scott of Roanoke, VA and Barbara W. Neal of Cartersville, GA; one grandson, David Howse of Atlanta, GA; a daughter-in-law, Ellen Howse of Tucker, GA; one niece, Ruth (Ronald) Hill of Marquette, MI; three nephews, David (Jodi) Alverson of Murphy, Paul (Pat) Makela of Gwinn, MI and Ben (Alice) Makela of Bishopville, SC; and a sister-in-law, Helen Makela of Marquette, MI.
Funeral services were held Monday May 28, 2001 at the Ivie Funeral Home of Murphy, Rev. George Yates officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Murphy. Pallbearers were David and D.J. Alverson, David Howse, John Snow, Marvin Cook and Ron Hill.
Preceding her in death in addition to her parents and husband were two brothers, Reino Makela and Unto Makela, a step-son, James T. Howse, a niece, Nancy Makela Livesay, and a sister-in-law, Edna (Hill) Makela.

MARQUETTE -- Rosella E. Jolin, 96, of 1806 East Ave., died Thursday, June 7, 2001 at the Eastwood Nursing Center.
She was born October 20, 1904 in Marquette to Henry and Anna Nebel and had lived in this area all her life. She was a graduate of the Marquette Public Schools and NMU, where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a teaching certificate. Prior to retiring she worked as a ward clerk in Central Supply at Marquette General Hospital for 30 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Friendly Frails Home Extension Club.
Survivors include a daughter Carol (Albert) Kunick of Marquette, three sons; Kenneth (Deanna) Jolin of Chehalis, WA and Lowell (Florence) Jolin and Charles (Jacqueline) Jolin, both of Marquette, a sister Faith Stripe of Grayling, a sister-in-law Bernice Clement of Marquette, 16 grandchildren, many great and great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, June 10, 2001 in the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with Pastor Juan Papaleo officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery with the grandchildren serving as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will begin at the funeral home at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
Mark Allen Morton
SKANDIA -- Mark Allen Morton, 68, of 180 McMaster Road, Skandia, entered eternal life early Friday morning, June 8, 2001, shortly after admittance to Marquette General Hospital. He had been in ill health for the past five years.
Mark was born March 29, 1933 in McFarland, a son of the late Earl and Nellie (Jacques) Morton, and was raised in McFarland. On October 27, 1951 he married Eunice A. Houghton in Carlshend and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family. Mark served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Corporal. Upon returning home, he worked as a woodsman for various employers, among them Marcel Seymour and Richmond-Hawley. He retired in January. Mark was an avid outdoorsman who thoroughly enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.
A devoted and loving husband, father, proud grandparent, and brother, he is survived by: his wife of 49 years Eunice A. Morton; three sons, Anthony (Linda) Morton of Fruitport, Doyle Morton of Kenosha, WI, and Bo Allen Morton of Skandia; his grandchildren, Candy (Kevin) Potgetter, Amy Morton, Craig (Amanda) Morton, and Stephen Morton; great-grandson, Brian "B.J." Morton; a sister, Winifred Eggleston of McFarland; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Johnston and Wilma Saul; and brothers, Edward Morton and Elmer Wheeler.

Alvern Dishnow
MICHIGAMME - Alvern Dishnow, age 93 of 120 Railroad St., Michigamme passed away on Saturday June 9, 2001 at his home in Michigamme.
Alvern was born December 20, 1907 in Michigamme to the late Moses and Amelia (Hicks) Dishnow. As a child he lived in Pequaming, moving to Michigamme in his teens with his family, where he has resided since. He graduated from the Michigamme High School, Class of 1925. He was a commissioned reserve officer in the United States Coast Guard. Alvern worked as a Mate and later a Captain for the Reiss Steamship Co. which became the American Steamship Co. on the Great Lakes for 38 years, retiring in 1971. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Ouellette Council. He was a former member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church and the Michigamme Lions Club.
Survivors include a son Michael (Diane) Dishnow of Soldiers Grove, WI; 2 daughters - Kathleen (Kenneth) Niemi of Port Huron, MI and Marlene (Morgan) Pierce of Leslie, MI; a brother Anthony Dishnow of Westland, MI; 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, special nieces Ruth Smith of Newark, DE and Grace Hammond of Fernandina Beach, FL along with several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Leah on June 25, 2000 and a grandson Michael Dishnow.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Tuesday June 12, 2001 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion with the Rev. Fr. Ben Paris to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Michigamme.

Eldora Jose
lSHPEMING - Eldora Jose, 82, of 624 Park Street, passed away on Friday morning, June 8, 2001, at Bell Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
She was born August 18, 1918 in Negaunee to Ernest "Lambert" and Katherine (Prowse) Chard. She was a lifelong area resident except for a period when the family moved to Lansing. She attended Negaunee High School. She worked at Quaal's Department Store in Ishpeming for a period of time. She married Marvin Jose on November 26, 1942 at Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming. She was a homemaker who was a loving wife and mother who cared for her family and others. She had many friends who will dearly miss her.
She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church Women's Evening Guild, a past member of the Parents Group for the Ishpeming Blue Notes Drum and Bugle Corps, which her daughters were members of; a past member of the The New York Club of Ishpeming, and a member of several other clubs.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorothea (James) Taylor, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Marjorie (Tom) Myers of Ishpemig; several grandchildren, Corey, Tracy, and Bradley Taylor of Myrtle Beach, SC, Katie and Kerrie Myers of Ishpeming; several cousins; a very special cousin, Shirley Northey of Negaunee; sisters-in-law Esther Jose of Aneheim, California, and Betty Chard of Mishawaka, lndiana; nieces Sandra Crowell of Mishawaka, Indiana, Garnelle (Michael) Boudreau, of Oviedo, Florida; nephews Lambert "Lanny" (Judy) Chard of Gaylord, Michigan, Charles (Mary) Chard, of Madison Heights, Michigan, Gene (Carol) Jose, of Aneheim, California.
She was preceded in death by her father Lambert in August, 1974, her mother Katherine (Dino) Martinotti in May, 1985, her husband Marvin, on April 19, 1980' her brother Leonard Chard in March, 1989, her brother-in-law Garnet Jose in October 1981, and her sister-in-law Gladys Jose in March, 1999.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 12 at Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming with visitation from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. The Reverend Virginia Peacock will ofiiciate. A luncheon will follow the service. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James Taylor, Charles Chard, Lambert Chard, Tom Myers, and George Holmgren.

Mrs. Gilbert (Phyllis Stack) Johnson
SKANDIA -- Mrs. Gilbert (Phyllis Stack) Johnson, 77, of Box 81, Skandia, passed away Friday, June 8, 2001 at 8:30 PM at Marquette General Hospital, where she had numerous hospitalizations for the past year.
She was born April 6, 1924 to the late Fred and Alvira Stack of Skandia, and spent most of her life in the Skandia area. She is survived by her husband Gilbert, whom she married September 24, 1946, having enjoyed 54 years of marriage.
In addition to her husband she is survived by her brother Vernon Stack of Minneapolis, MN, sisters in law Pat (Stack) Ryan of Skandia, Linnea (Johnson) Hedmark of Marquette and Gladys (Heidtman) Johnson of Tuscon, AZ. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Debbie (Stack) Voegtline, Holly (Stack) Paris of Gwinn, Cort Stack of Minneapolis, MN, Roy Stack of Skandia, Jon Stack of Marquette (Harvey), a great-niece Jennifer Voegtline of Harvey location, Carol (Johnson) Rockwell, Wayne & Dennis Johnson of Arizona, Robert Johnson of Florida, Gordon Hedmark of Skandia, Connie Hedmark (Soldan) of Marquette, Greg Hedmark of Arizona, as well as several great nieces and nephews and a number of cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother James Stack and brothers in law Carl Johnson and Edward Hedmark.
Her biggest joy in life was using her talents to sew for others, particularly the little children. She also enjoyed being active in various community functions, including the Skandia Lioness Club which she was a charter member of.
She was a member of the Emanuel Church of Skandia, where funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Chad Christensen at 1:30 PM on Tuesday June 12, 2001. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm this evening at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Northland Chapel Gardens, with her nieces and nephews acting as pallbearers.

Sandra Pauline "Sandy" Mackey
HARVEY -- Sandra Pauline "Sandy" Mackey, 57, of 329 County Road 480, Harvey, was called to her eternal home by our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, early Friday morning, June 8, 2001, following admittance to Marquette General Hospital. Sandy was born July 4, 1943 in Ishpeming, a daughter of Richard Oliver and Elna K. (Peterson) Hill, and was raised in Negaunee. She married Gerald J. Mackey on March 10, 1961 and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family, which eventually included three children. Sandy and Gerald had been Harvey area residents for the past 31 years. Sandy was employed as a housekeeper with Larson, Hetrick and Weaver for over 20 years. She enjoyed being a homemaker, taking care of her family, and was an avid flower gardener. She also enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren and special canine pets, Reggie and Harley. Sandy was a member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey. A devoted and loving wife, mother, proud grandparent, daughter, sister, and aunt, she is survived by: her husband of 40 years, Gerald J. Mackey; a daughter, Michelle Mackey of Naples, FL; two sons, Gerald (Shari) Mackey, Jr of Lehigh, FL and Daniel P. (Ronda) Mackey of Skandia; her grandchildren, Heather, John, Nichole, and Jacob Mackey and Heather Woody; her mother, Elna K. Hill of Marquette; a sister, Lois (Ron) Ritari of Marquette; three nieces, Julie (John) Baltes of Madison, WI, Feride (Ismet) Kalafatoglu and Ronna (Cem) Oneren both residing in Turkey; two nephews, Richard (Kathy) Ritari of Minneapolis, MN and Ronald (Tamma) Ritari, Jr of Marquette; several aunts, uncles, cousins, great nieces and great nephews. Sandy was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Katherine Ann Hill-Onat. Charles W. Nicholas
MENOMINEE -- Charles W. Nicholas, 91, of 1717 23rd Ave., Menominee, died Friday at Rennes Health Center East in Peshtigo. He was born in Mohawk, Michigan on October 27, 1909, to the late Charles and Emily (Boase) Nicholas. He was married to Evelyn Gaffney in 1940, she preceded him in death in 1983.
He was raised in the Negaunee, Michigan, area and worked in the iron mines after graduating from Negaunee High School in 1926. He later attended Michigan State University, receiving a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in 1933. He held several engineering and managerial positions, including many years as General Manager of American Rule and Block Company in Menominee, and retired from that position in 1968. He later worked at Fish Net and Twine Company in Menominee. He was a member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge of Marquette and Lake Superior Commandery. He enjoyed gardening and photography.
He is survived by two sons, Jim (Dolly) of Newark, California, and Jack (Joyce) of Menominee; five grandchildren, Jim (Courtney) of Pleasanton, California; Chris (Kathleen) of Hayward, California; Matthew of Folsom, California; Janet (John) Beyer of Menominee and Jill of Green Bay, Wisconsin; six great grandchildren; one sister, Isabelle Violetta of Ironwood, Michigan. In addition to his wife he was also preceded in death by three brothers and one granddaughter.
Friends may call at LEMIEUX-THEILEN FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 from 5:00 P.M. until time of services at 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Deacon Vince Beckley will officiate.
Eldora Jose
lSHPEMING - Eldora Jose, 82, of 624 Park Street, passed away on Friday morning, June 8, 2001, at Bell Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
She was born August 18, 1918 in Negaunee to Ernest "Lambert" and Katherine (Prowse) Chard. She was a lifelong area resident except for a period when the family moved to Lansing. She attended Negaunee High School. She worked at Quaal's Department Store in Ishpeming for a period of time. She married Marvin Jose on November 26, 1942 at Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming. She was a homemaker who was a loving wife and mother who cared for her family and others. She had many friends who will dearly miss her.
She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church Women's Evening Guild, a past member of the Parents Group for the Ishpeming Blue Notes Drum and Bugle Corps, which her daughters were members of; a past member of the The New York Club of Ishpeming, and a member of several other clubs.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorothea (James) Taylor, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Marjorie (Tom) Myers of Ishpemig; several grandchildren, Corey, Tracy, and Bradley Taylor of Myrtle Beach, SC, Katie and Kerrie Myers of Ishpeming; several cousins; a very special cousin, Shirley Northey of Negaunee; sisters-in-law Esther Jose of Aneheim, California, and Betty Chard of Mishawaka, lndiana; nieces Sandra Crowell of Mishawaka, Indiana, Garnelle (Michael) Boudreau, of Oviedo, Florida; nephews Lambert "Lanny" (Judy) Chard of Gaylord, Michigan, Charles (Mary) Chard, of Madison Heights, Michigan, Gene (Carol) Jose, of Aneheim, California.
She was preceded in death by her father Lambert in August, 1974, her mother Katherine (Dino) Martinotti in May, 1985, her husband Marvin, on April 19, 1980' her brother Leonard Chard in March, 1989, her brother-in-law Garnet Jose in October 1981, and her sister-in-law Gladys Jose in March, 1999.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 12 at Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming with visitation from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. The Reverend Virginia Peacock will ofiiciate. A luncheon will follow the service. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James Taylor, Charles Chard, Lambert Chard, Tom Myers, and George Holmgren.
