Genevieve M. Kauffman
OSCODA, MI -- Genevieve M. Kauffman, age 93, of Oscoda, Michigan died Monday, June 11, at her home.
She was born March 24, 1908 in Hale, Michigan. Genevieve moved to the Oscoda area in 1949 from Detroit, MI. She was employed by Gilbert's Drug Store for 12 years. She was active in the local poverty program and served on the election board. Genevieve was a former member of Sacred Heart Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Six of her children served the US Armed Forces during WWII- Korea and Vietnam.
Surviving are 4 sons and a daughter; Richard Dale (DeLorse) Hansen of Oscoda, Donald (Dorothy) Hansen of Marquette, Ronald J. Hansen of Oscoda, Robert (Ann) Hansen of Oscoda and Jean M. Lee of Loudon, N.H. One sister Leona Parks of Houghton Lake Heights. There are 20 granchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. Also several nieces and nephews. Genevieve was preceded in death by two husbands, Ralph Hansen and Raymond Kauffman, 2 sons and 2 daughters, 5 grandchildren, 2 brothers and a sister.
Services for Genevieve will be Thursday, June 14, at 10 AM in the Mathias Township Cemetery in Trenary, Michigan.
Visitation is Tuesday 2-4pm and 6-8pm in the Buresh Chapel (River Rd.) of the Buresh- Bennett Funeral Homes Inc. with a 7:30 scripture service.
Margaret M. Wallace
MICHIGAMME -- Margaret M. Wallace, age 73, of 316 W. Main St., Michigamme, passed away Sunday June 10, 2001 at the Marquette General Hospital where she had been a patient for the past 11 days. She had been in ill health for the past 2 years.
Margaret was born July 31, 1927 in Michigamme to the late Louis P. and Mabel (Guidebeck) Cevigney. She was a graduate of the Michigamme High School, Class of 1943. She worked as a waitress at Salvador's and Herb and Mary's Restaurants. Margaret was a former member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church. She loved to help her husband Fran paint woodcrafts, along with playing cards. She had a special place in her heart for her cat "Shadow".
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Francis Wallace of Michigamme; 3 sons- Francis (Patty) Wallace of Marquette, Michael (Heidi) Wallace of Warsw, IN and LeRoy (Sharon) Wallace of Michigamme; a daughter Marcia (Skip) Miller of Chesterfield, MI; a brother Gert (Irene) Cevigney of Ishpeming; 6 grandchildren- Shannon, Bobbie Jo, Amy, Sarah, Jennifer and Guy Wallace; step-grandchildren John and Amy Miller and Ronda and Scott Williams; step-great grandchildren- Merisha Sanders, Kyle, Megan and Shannon Miller; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother Louis Cevigney.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 pm on Wednesday June 13, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Sister Marge Schmelzle and Sister Lois Risch to officiate. Inurnment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Michigamme.
The family will greet friends at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 5:00 pm until the time of services on Wednesday.
Melvin "Spike" A. Perry
REPUBLIC -- Melvin "Spike" A. Perry, age 64, of 1340 Co. Rd. LLK, Republic died Sunday, June 10, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital following a 1 1/2 year battle with cancer.
Melvin was born June 8, 1937 in Republic to the late Robert & Irma (Hanninen) Perry. He started working on the railroad for LS&I at the age of 15. He moved to Chicago in 1957 working at Chicago Union Station, retiring in 1997. He was a member of I A M Local Chicago Chapter.
Spike is survived by his wife, whom he married on January 19, 1957, Georgean (Olander) Perry, a daughter Denise Leonard of Chesterton, IN, 2 sisters MaryLou (Ron) Messick of Zion, IL, Gail (Rodney) Tarvainen of Covington, 3 brothers James (Karen) Perry of Republic, Keith (Nancy) Perry of Republic and Paul (Holli) Perry of Kenosha, WI, 2 grandchildren Danielle and Nicole Leonard, several nieces, nephews & cousins. Spike was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Robert Perry and a sister Diane Mattila.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Lance Roberts officiating.

William Thomas DeShambo, Sr.
ARNOLD -- William Thomas DeShambo, Sr., of Arnold passed away unexpectedly Monday afternoon June 4, 2001 at the Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was 40.
He was born on June 9, 1960 in Escanaba, the son of William DeShambo and Joan Winters and was raised in Arnold. He graduated from Gwinn High School.
Mr. DeShambo spent most of his working years in the logging industry driving trucks and operating equipment. He was an avid NASCAR racing fan and enjoyed working on race cares for local drivers. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and stock car racing.
He is survived by: 1 daughter, Vanessa Jean, Watson, 1 son, William Thomas, Jr., Watson, mother, Joan Winters, Danforth, father William DeShambo, Arnold, 2 sisters, Colleen (John) Rappette, Cornell, Anne DeShambo, Gladstone, maternal grandmother, Delores Winters, Escanaba, 1 niece, 3 nephews, several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by brother, Frank, in 1986, grandparents, Ellsworth and Catherine DeShambo and grandfather, Joseph Winters.
The Mass of Christian Burial for William Thomas DeShambo Sr., was celebrated at St. Joseph' s Church in Northland at 4:00 p.m. Friday (June 8), concelebrated by Rev. Larry Van Damme and Rev. Francis DeGroot. Interment was in the Riverview Cemetery in Northland. Arrangements were in the care of the Allo Funeral Home in Escanaba.
Arthur J. LaForest
NEGAUNEE -- Arthur J. LaForest, age 91, formerly of 427 Prince St., Negaunee died at 9:35 AM on Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at the Norlite Nursing Center where he had been a patient since Aug. of 2000.
Arthur was born Oct. 8, 1909 in Negaunee to Adelore & Leontine (Roberts) LaForest and was a lifelong resident. He worked for many years as a laborer for the City of Negaunee.
Mr. LaForest is survived by several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Agnes Marie LaForest in 1997, 4 brothers; Wilfred, Louis, Delore & Albert LaForest, 4 sisters; Rose, Lydia, Clara & Mary.
Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. John J. Shiverski, pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.

Elizabeth M. "Libby" Guidebeck
NEGAUNEE -- Elizabeth M. "Libby" Guidebeck, age 95, formerly of 534 Elm St., Negaunee died at 9:30 PM on Monday, June 11, 2001 at the Eastwood Nursing Center where she had resided for 5 years.
"Libby" was born Aug. 13, 1905 in Negaunee to Joseph & Lillian (Brown) Young and was a life long area resident. She worked at the H.W. Gossard Co. many years ago and she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Guidebeck was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed people and dearly loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her hobbies included handwork of all kinds and she loved to paint and bake.
Surviving are 2 sons; Joseph (Angela) Guidebeck, Waltham, MA, Thomas (Sharon) Guidebeck, Negaunee, 1 daughter, Mary (Thomas) Sharland, Ishpeming, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren, a special niece, Helen Bonetti, Ishpeming, a special nephew, Everett Senobe, Marquette, 3 sisters-in-law; Rachel Tallio, Marquette, Marcella Dahl, Milwaukee, WI, Elva Guidebeck, Kenosha, WI, numerous great nieces & great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Thomas I. Guidebeck in 1987, 3 brothers & 2 sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday at St. Paul Catholic Church with Rev. John J. Shiverski officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Pallbearers will be; James & Gregory Guidebeck, Joe, Justin & Ian Thomas, Jeff Fetterhoff.
Friends may call at St. Paul Catholic Church from 10:00 AM until the time of services at 11:00 AM on Thursday.

Clarence P. "Nobby" Novinger
HARVEY -- Clarence P. "Nobby" Novinger, 80, of 137 Riverland Drive, Harvey, entered eternal life Tuesday morning, June 12, 2001, at his home, surrounded by family and in the care of Lake Superior Hospice.
Born May, 8, 1921 in Burlington Kansas, he was a son of the late Patrick and Anna (Mahoney) Novinger. Clarence served his country in the Army during World War II. After returning from the war, Clarence married Mildred Townsend on August 5, 1942. They have been Harvey area residents since 1982. He worked for the Army Corp of Engineers and then the National Park Service as a Land Acquisitioner for 13 years, helping to establish the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the Teton National Park. In all, Clarence worked for the federal government for over 40 years, retiring in 1980.
Nobby volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years, spending 18 summers at Camp Hiawatha near Munising. Clarence and his wife donated two cabins to the improvement of the camp. Throughout the years, Nobby touched the lives of many of the scouts that went there.
Clarence was a member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church, the Lawrence Dhondt Council #6447 Knights of Columbus in Harvey, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), and a life member of the VFW in Ridge Manor, FL. He enjoyed nature, wintering in Florida, and going to rummage sales. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Clarence is survived by: his wife of 59 years, Mildred Novinger; two sons, Patrick (Marlene) Novinger of Spartanburg, SC, and Kevin (Marijo) Novinger of Michigan City, IN; two daughters, Maureen (Bruce) Ward of Skandia, and Anna (Chris) Ghaly of Coppll, TX; twelve grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, Richard Novinger; and a brother, Francis Novinger.
Friends may call at St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey on Friday, June, 15, beginning at 4:00 pm. A Mass of-Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday evening at 7:00 pm with Rev. Guy Thoren, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Boy Scouts of America. The Fassbender Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Martha A. Meredith
ISHPEMING -- Martha A. Meredith, age 82, of Ishpeming Twp. passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2001.
Martha was born May 14, 1919 in Mass, Michigan to the late Andrew & Anna Karjalainen. She lived most of her life in the Detroit area, living in Ishpeming since 1997. She is a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church of Ishpeming.
Martha is survived by a son Ronald (Mary Ann) Meredith of Ishpeming, a daughter Shirley Meredith of Burnsville, MN, 2 sisters Sigrid Servio of Rockland, MI and Ann Tauriainen of Oak Park, MI, and brother Wilhart Karjalainen of Seney, MI, 16 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews. Martha was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence, 2 children, Dennis Meredith and Marion Waters, brothers Henry, Taito, and Alfred and a sister Alma Hedler.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2001 at the Apostolic Lutheran Church, Ishpeming Twp., with Frank Honkala officiating. Burial will be in the North Star Cemetery in North Star, MI.
Friends may call the Apostolic Lutheran Church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Mathew J. Norkoli
ISHPEMING -- Mathew Norkoli, 81, passed away Wednesday morning at The D.J. Jacobetti Veterans Facility where he had been a patient the last 9 years.
Born Feb. 21, 1920 in Humboldt the son of Oscar & Susanna (Korpi) Norkoli, he was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Norkoli was a veteran of WWII having joined the army on Oct. 9, 1942. He served with the HQ company 60th Infantry 9th Armored Division in the Rhineland Campaign and Ardennes Campaign. Wounded in Luxemborg 12/23/44 and in Germany on 3/15/45 he received many decorations and citations including European, African, Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Ribbon, Expert Infantry Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. Mathew worked as a woodsman most of his life and enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing in particular. He was a life member of VFW Post 4573 and Life Member of DAV Chapter Michigan #33.
Surviving are one step daughter, Mrs. Cleneus (Karen) Traut of 789 N. Green Bay Rd., Highland Park, Illinois, 4 step grandchildren, Timothy Traut, Kenosha, WI., James (Joanne) Traut, Wilthrop, IL., Richard (Mahschid) Traut, Libertyville, IL., and Mrs. Peter (Therese) Anthony of Nicholasville, KY., and several nieces an nephews. Three sisters in law, Irma Alanko, Ishpeming, Lillian Norkoli, Marquette, Katherine Wollerton, Bay City MI. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian (Merrila), 1983, one step daughter Sandra Merrila, his parents, 5 brothers and 3 sisters.
Private funeral services will be held with burial in the Ishpeming Cemetery. The Racine Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
Theresa M. Mattson
ISHPEMING -- Theresa M. Mattson, age 85 of 724 Wabash St., Ishpeming passed peacefully on Wednesday June 13, 2001 at 3:42 AM at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming.
Theresa was born January 25, 1916 in Ishpeming to the late Nestor and Mary (Torkko) Mattila. She was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, class of 1933. Theresa was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, and belonged to the Ladies Aide Board, and for a long time was accompanist for the Finnish Thursday Night services. Theresa was also a member of the Deborah Circle at Bethel Lutheran Church, and of the K.N, Sammottaren Tupa (Ladies of the Kaleva) and served as accompanist there as well.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Helmer Mattson of Ishpeming; a son Richard (Deborah) Mattson of Ann Arbor; a granddaughter Karen Mattson of New York City; a niece Marcia Gronval; a nephew Gary Mattila; brother-in-law and sister-in-law John E. Gersich and Helen Gersich; their sons and families, John G. Gersich and James A. Gersich. She was preceded in death by a brother Hugo Mattila, sister-in-law Effie Mattila and a nephew John Mattila.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday June 15, 2001 at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki & C. Bruce Ulstad to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Frank Ross
MARQUETTE -- In loving memory of Frank Ross, of Marquette, formerly of Traunik, who entered eternal life early Thursday morning, June 14, 2001 surrounded by his family and friends.
Mr. Ross was born to Rudolph & Matilda Osolnik on May 1, 1918, in Forest City, Pennsylvania. Frank married Doris June Whitman of Dollarville, MI on Nov. 2, 1941 and served in the Army of the United States from August 6,1947 to October 8,1945.
He was an automotive mechanic and enjoyed building and racing stock cars while living in Flint, MI for many years before retiring to the Upper Peninsula in 1971. Frank enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, working in the woods and spending time with his
friends by the campfire in Traunik, Limestone and Kiva.
Mr. Ross is survived by five children, Duane (Patsy) Ross of Ishpeming, Frank (Dorothy) Ross of Flushing, MI, James D. Ross of Burton, MI., Carol Ross-Wright of Traunik and Glenda Ross of Gwinn; grandchildren, Russell, Wayne, Shirley, Douglas, Edna, Jenny, Jamie, Sarah, Zachary and Ginger; 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Turki and Tillie Gabory, a daughter, Shirley Ann Ross; sons, Daryl and Dennis Ross; and a granddaughter Mary Emma Ross.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday in the chapel of the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans at 2 PM with the Rev G.E. Caron officiating. Friends may call on Saturday from 10 am until the time of the service at the veteran's home. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Clio, Michigan.

Gladys A. Burke
MUNISING -- Gladys A. Burke, age 87, of 702 Brook Street, Munising, died on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at 11:07 p.m. at the Munising Memorial Hospital. she was born on July 14, 1913 in Hubbell, Michigan to the late Thomas and Carrie (Axford) Peters. She was raised in Hubbell and attended school in Lake Linden, but lived most of her life in the Munising area. Gladys married Thomas Joseph Burke in Calumet on May 23, 1936. They were married over 57 years before he preceded her in death on November 13, 1993. Gladys was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Munising and a homemaker.
She is survived be her daughter- Glenda "Lorrell" & John Blau of Baraboo, WI; her son- Richard "Royce" & Judith Burke of Bullhead City, AZ; 5 granddaughters; 2 grandsons; 7 great- granddaughters; 4 great- grandsons; step-sister- Elizabeth Moyle of Lake Linden; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Gladys was preceded in death by an infant son, John Lewis, a sister, Vera Adams, and two step-brothers, Richard and Robert Rowe.

Salomina "Marie" Kahler
L'ANSE -- Salomina "Marie" Kahler, 87, of L'Anse passed away suddenly June 13, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital. Marie was born in Hancock, MI August 17, 1913 to the late Alfred an Angelina (Monticello) Lazzari. She attended the Hancock Shools. On April 14, 1934 she married Delbert Kahler in Hancock. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Kahler had been a resident of the area since 1966.
Marie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the L'Anse Art Angels, and the L'Anse VFW Auxiliary. She was a former member of the Daughters of Isabella in Hancock. Among her many interests were crafts and she was an excellent cook and baker.
Mrs. Kahler is survived by three children, Delbert (Kris) Kahler of L'Anse, Marie (Bob) Johnson of Renton, WA and Patricia (Don) Valenti of Milwaukee, WI, three brothers, Edward Lazzari of Dade City, FL, Daniel (Marian) Lazzari of L'Anse and George (Peggy) Lazzari of Chassell, MI, 9 grandchildren and 9 great- grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 16 from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in L'Anse. Father Greg Heikkila will be the Celebrant adn intermenty will take place in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton, MI. The family will receive friends Friday, June 15, 2001 from 6 util 8 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, where a parish prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. The family suggests memorials to Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Envelopes will be available at thr Reid Funeral Service and Chapel who assisted the family with arrangements.
