Candace Mary Potila
ISHPEMING -- Candace Mary Potila, age 48 of 570 Co. Rd. PCC, Ishpeming passed away Friday, June 15, 2001 following a 1 1/2 year battle with cancer.
Candace was born June 22, 1952 in Ishpeming to the late Ernest & Irma (Waara) Potila. She graduated from Northern Michigan, died June 10, 2001, as the result of a hunting accident in Manistique Township, Indiana the son of the late Dennis M. and Lottie R. (Powell) Grover and moved to Central Lake, Michigan.
On June 7, 1958 he married the former Maria D. Narro in Bellaire, Michigan Bear Hunters Association, the U.P. Bear Houndsmen Association, Ducks Unlimited, the U.P. Whitetails, the Professional Kennel Club and the National Rifle Association. He was also a member of Rotary International, the National, Michigan and U.P. Association of Realtors.
His business was also active in sponsoring Grover's Statewide Hockey and Soccer Teams.
Survivors include: Wife: Marie D. Grover of Manistique; Son: David Grover of Walloon Lake, MI; Daughters: Dianna L. Grover of Marquette, Shelly (Ken) Mayo of Grand Blanc, Shari (Ken) Rehn of Cooks, Nancy (Barry) Cole of Walloon Lake; 11 Grandchildren: Jeffrey L. Zellner of Manistique, Kristy Zellner of Sturgis, MI, Jacob Herro of Manistique, Adam & Allegra Mayo of Grand Blanc, Annie, Amber, Zebulon & Jesse Rehn of Cooks, and Brant & Benjamin Cole of Walloon Lake; 2 Great Grandchildren: Makenzie & Brooklyn McLimmins of Sturgis; 1 Sister: Cyrilene (Paul) Ankerson of Traverse City; Paternal Aunt: Lois Conant of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 4:00-8:00 PM, Monday, June 18, 2001 at Messier- Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. Funeral services are at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique with Mr. Jim Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Hiawatha Township Cemetery in Manistique. Memorial donations may be directed to the Manistique Search and Rescue, the National Rifle Association or the U.P. Bear Houndsmen Association.
Arne Strom
ESCANABA -- Arne Strom, age 85, of 1109 Sheridan Road, Escanaba, died Friday, June 15, 2001 at the Christian Park Health Care Center in Escanaba where he was a patient for the last 2 1/2 months. He was born January 14, 1916 in Kipling, the son of Emil Strom and the former Anna Yearnstrom and was raised in Kipling.
He married the former Martha M. Asp on July 26, 1944 and she preceded him in death in 1988. For over 14 years, he sailed the Great Lakes for a number of steel companies, serving as a wheelsman until 1949. Arne later was employed by Harnischfeger Corp. in Escanaba, where he served as inspector in manufacturing, retiring in 1981. He also was a 1975 graduate of the Escanaba Area High School, having completed his high school education through its adult enrichment program.
Arne was a member of the "Open Heart Club" of Marquette General Hospital and he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and working in the woods.
Survivors include: 1 son, John Strom of Skandia; 2 daughters, Myra (Steve) Hanson of Marquette and Mary (Tom) Ross of Gladstone; 7 grandchildren, Brian (Alicia) Parloto, Brett Hanson, Jerrod Hanson, Blaine Hanson, Kip (Danielle) Hanson, Jason (Myra Zoch) Ross, and Julie Ross; 3 great grandchildren, Tyler Hanson, Trevor Hanson and Kathleen Ross; 1 sister, Lillian Sabourin of Gladstone; 1 brother, Gordon (Hazel) Strom of Gladstone; 2 sisters-in-law, Lillian Strom of Gladstone and Hilda Strom of San Francisco, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arne also leaves to survive "grandpa's dog pal, Brutus". In addition to his parents and his wife, Martha, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Sadie Mattson and Ingrid DeWitt and by 3 brothers, Ewald Strom, Melvin "Tut" Strom and Edward Strom.
Visitation for Arne Strom will be held on Monday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Additional visitation will again be held on Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Services will follow at 1:00 pm at the First Lutheran Church with a nephew of Arne, Rev. Paul Strom, officiating with additional personal tributes by his son-in-law, Tom Ross. Burial will be in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery, Wells. Luncheon will follow cemetery services at the "Family Inn Restaurant" in Escanaba. The Skradski Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.
Arthur C. O'Leary
ISHPEMING-- Arthur C. O'Leary, age 70, of 1908 Deer Lake Ave., Ishpeming, passed away on Friday, June 15, 2001 at his home in Ishpeming.
Arthur was born March 19, 1931 in Ishpeming to the late Arthur J. and Sarah Mae (Campbell) O'Leary. He served in the United States Marine Corps for over 20 years, receiving the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Purple Heart. Arthur retired from the Marine Corps in 1970 as a Staff Sergeant. In 1972 he returned to work as a prison guard at the Marquette Branch Prison, retiring from there in 1987. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post #44 of Marquette and the V.F.W. post in Ruskin, FL.
Arthur is survived by his wife of 27 years, Margaret O'Leary of Ishpeming; 4 children- Allan (Becky) Sleeman of Ann Arbor, MI, Christine (Gary) Burnette of Ishpeming, George Sleeman of Grand Rapids, and Patti (Michael) Dragicevich of Portsmouth, RI; a sister Donna (John) Swanson of Marquette; 10 grandchildren- Kristopher, Michael, Bradley and Adam Sleeman, Tammi and Stacey Gibson, Brian and Laura Burnette and Mark and Paul Dragicevich; a great granddaughter Wynn Isham; and two nieces Cheri Croschere and Cindy Borcherding. He was preceded in death by a daughter Kay Sleeman.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00pm on Monday, June 18, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Harmon to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 5:00 until 7:00pm on Monday.
Arvo A. Jarvis
MARQUETTE -- Arvo A. Jarvis, 75, of 520 Harrison Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Friday morning, June 15, 2001, at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient less than a day.
Arvo was born June 6, 1926 in Marquette, a son of the late Waino and Elsie (Hill) Jarvis and was a lifelong Marquette resident. He married Loretta Ruth Henning on October 1, 1966 in Marquette and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family, which eventually included five children. For over 47 years, Arvo was employed as a baker with the Our Own Bakery (Bunny Bread) and later Tastee Bakery, retiring in 1988. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting, particularly bow hunting and rabbit hunting with his dogs. His hobbies also included being a loyal NMU Hockey fan, gardening, playing the organ and violin-uke, baking and cooking. He was among the best at pasty making. He was a member of Marquette Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #405, Marquette Moose Lodge #1059, the Florida.
Chrissy and her mom, Aune (Koski) Waisanen, spent their last 25 summers at the Horseshoe Lake cottage. Friends will be greeted there following the service.
John A. Hyttinen
PALMER -- John A. Hyttinen, age 78, of 502 Isabella Ave. Palmer was pronounced dead on arrival at Bell Memorial Hospital at 11:32 AM on Friday, June 15, 2001, after suffering an apparent heart attack at his home.
John was born July 31, 1922 in Palmer to Iver and Briita (Kaikkonen) Hyttinen and was a life long Palmer resident. He worked for many years as a self employed trucker.
Mr. Hyttinen is survived by 2 sons: Edward Hyttinen and William Hyttinen, both of Palmer; 3 daughters: Gloria Littleton, Annette Arbelius, both of Ypsilanti, MI and Judy Gilles, of Ann Arbor, MI; 1 sister, Sarah (John) Korpi of Palmer; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Vicar Lisa Barry of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 12:00 Noon until the time of services at 2:00pm on Tuesday.
Martha E. Linna
ISHPEMING -- Martha E. Linna, age 72, of 111 Bluff St. Apt. #416 Ishpeming, passed away Friday, June 15, 2001 at the Marquette General Hospital.
Martha was born May 23, 1929 in Negaunee to the late Matthew and Helmi Laitinen. She graduated from Negaunee High School, class of 1947. Martha was a life long area resident.
Martha worked at Mr. Donut in Ishpeming. She was the unofficial gardener of the Bluff St. Apartments. She enjoyed plants, photography and was an avid reader. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church of Ishpeming.
Martha is survived by 3 daughters: Carol (Bob) Asikainen of Ishpeming, Lois (Bruce) Talus of Ishpeming, Mary Jo Linna-Black of Austin, Michigan University in 1997 with a degree in Business-Finance.
Rod managed and cooked at Buck's Restaurant in Ishpeming for 12 years. He moved to Milwaukee 3 years ago, working as a Client Account Service Representative for Strong Investments of Milwaukee. He enjoyed bike riding, the outdoors and spending time with family and friends.
Rod is survived by his parents Edward and Judy White of Ishpeming; a sister Paula (Dennis) Springer of Germany; 2 brothers, Greg (Debbie) White of Frederick, MD and Jim (Veronica) White of Marquette; his maternal grandfather, George "Blackie" White of Ishpeming; 2 nephews, 2 nieces and a expectant niece, several aunts, uncles and cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held 6:00pm Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. MSGR Peter Oberto officiating.

Bernard Morgan
MARQUETTE -- Bernard Morgan of 1518 Birch Ave., Marquette, passed away quietly Saturday afternoon at his home. He was born on May 25, 1925 in Coral, Pennsylvania, son Michael (Martha) Morgan of Marquette, four grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces.
Bernie worked with the Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division for 36 years. He started as a Conservation Officer in Delton, MI. He later moved to Baldwin, MI and Mio, MI (where he was District Law Supervisor). He retired in 1987 in Marquette from the position of Regional Law Supervisor. After retirement, Bernie remained active in law enforcement circles as a member and Past President of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan University Volleyball matches, and practices, as he became a great fan of that fine program. His family and friends greatly appreciate the warm friendship that the members of the NMU Volleyball program provided Bernie.
A vistation will be held at the Swanson-Lundquist Fuenral Home in Marquette on Tuesday, June 19th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Private graveside services will be held Wednesday, June 20th. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bernard Morgan's name to U.P. Home Hospice (1414 W. Fair Ave., Marquette), the NMU Volleyball program (c/o NMU Development Fund, Northern California on Thursday, June 14, the result of a heart attack.
Kathy was born March 31, 1952 in Negaunee. She is survived by her husband Paul O'Dane of Glendora, 2 daughters, Shawna (Mike) Medina and Paula (Shane) Wells, 1 sister, Harriet (Frank) Rodriguez, Baldwin Park, CA and 1 brother, Osmond "Spike" (Teresa) Kemp, Negaunee. Two grandsons, Brett Medina and Jared Wells also survive her, along with several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, including nephews Curt and Chad Kemp of Negaunee. She was preceded in death by her parents Ruth (Anderson) and Osmond Kemp, Sr.
Funeral Services will take place Wednesday at Forest Lawn Covina Hills, 21300 Via Verde, Covina, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents Leon and Pearl (Marquart), Jocelyn his wife of 52 years, a brother Melvin and sister Florence, also two infant daughters.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Bunce (Forrest), two brothers Albert (Mary) of Deer River, MN, Howard (Audrey) of Minneapolis, a sister Dorothy Lazzaro of Colorado Springs; five sons, Arthur of St. Paul, MN, William of St. Paul, Clement of Ishpeming, MI, Randy of Ishpeming and Dick (Carol) of Ishpeming; four daughters, Cece (Dennis) Korpi of Ishpeming, Susan (Joseph) Youren of Ishpeming, Ruth Scarborough of Ishpeming and Barbara (Donald) Feltus of Naushwauk, MN; three step sons, Danny Jackson of Colorado Springs, Donald Jackson of Colorado Springs and David Jackson of Orlando, Minnesota and Michigan.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home, 400 N. Third St., Ishpeming. A funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
