Emil Wiig
NEGAUNEE -- Emil Wiig, age 86, formerly of 715 Croix St. Negaunee died at 9:20 PM on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had resided since 1994.
Emil was born Dec. 31, 1914 in Negaunee to Julius & Katrina (Leppanen) Wiig, was a graduate of Negaunee High School and was a life long resident. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He worked for many years as a pumpman for the City of Negaunee at the Teal Lake Water Works, retiring in 1976. Emil was an avid outdoorsman and loved gardening, shoveling snow, and playing BINGO.
Surviving are one son, Robert Wiig, Marquette, 4 daughters; Merry Bjorne, Ishpeming, Kathleen (Ken) Blondeau, Marquette, Ann (Michael) Korhonen, Negaunee, Gloria Alexander, Marquette, 9 grandchildren; Heather (Todd) Martin, Grand Forks, ND, Wayne Bjorne, Madison, WI, Jason, Lindsay, & Matthew Blondeau, Cloea Wiig, Adele & Steven Shirkey, and Jonathan Alexander all of Marquette, 3 great grandchildren, Christian & Rachel Martin, Grand Forks, ND, Eleuria Bonnonewell, Marquette, a foster daughter, Diane Paananen, Lansing, several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Marion (Datson) in 1981, a grandson Bryan Blondeau, a son-in-law Douglas Bjorne, a daughter-in-law Patricia 'Kay' Wiig, 2 sisters; Lempi Nurmi & Lillian Wiig, 6 brothers; Onni, John, Arvid, Waino, Toivo, & Uno Wiig.
Private Funeral Services were held at 5:00 PM on Tuesday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. D. Michael Carriere, pastor of Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Emil's memory.

Grace E. Mazzali
MUNISING -- Grace E. Mazzali, age 77, of E8667 M-28 West, Munising, died following a lengthy illness on Wednesday January 10, 2001 at 1:40 p.m. at Marquette General Hospital. She was born on March 12, 1923 to the late John and Alma (Wendt) Mueller in Evanston, Illinois whre she was born and raised. Grace married Charles Mazzali on January 2, 1956 at Munising's United Methodist Church. She had worked at the "old" Munising Hospital and was a homemaker. Grace was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Munising for over 45 years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star of both Escanaba and Munising and was a past Worthy Matron and Past Grand Representative of the Order of the Eastern Star of Michigan. Grace loved to travel and she and Charlie had taken many trips to different parts of the country. She was talented with arts and crafts and she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and quilting. Grace enjoyed watching Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls and she was a huge Tiger Woods fan.
She is survived by her husband of over 45 years, Charlie Mazzali of Munising; son- William "Al" (Karin) Allyn of Palisades, NJ; two daughters- Ellen (Carl) Sandy of Carthage, MO and Sharon (Frank) Cornier of Berkeley, IL; 9 grandchildren; 5 great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Grace was preceded in death by a son, Richard William on January 12, 1983, three brothers, and two sisters.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00. An Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. by members of the Munising Chapter #424 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Pastor Terry Kordish will conduct the funeral on Saturday, January 13, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising. Interment will be at St. Peter's United Church of Christ Cemetery in Skokie, Illinois.
Juanita Magnusson
GWINN -- Juanita Hope Magnusson, 60, of 63 E. Sands Street, Gwinn, died Thursday morning at Marquette General Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Magnusson was born September 13, 1940 at Blowing Rock, North Carolina and had lived in the Gwinn and Sands area since 1984. She enjoyed arts and crafts, sewing, canning, gardening and quilting.
Juanita is survivied by two children, Troy Magnusson of Gwinn and Brenda Ann Carr of Ishpeming; one grandson, David Malachi Anderson; also one brother. Preceding her in death besides her parents was her husband, Wayne Magnusson and one brother.
Friends may call at the Gwinn Funeral Home on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. where funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. with Paul Ford of Heritage Baptist Church officiating. Interment will take place in North Carolina. The Gwinn Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mary H. Yates
MARQUETTE -- Mary H. Yates, 91, died January 10, 2001 at her home in Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility, 1901 Division St.
Mary was born December 3, 1909 in Ironwood, MI to the late Paul and Mina (Lundsrud) Amundsen and was a graduate of Ironwood High School. She moved to Marquette where she met and married Gordon Yates, her husband of almost sixty-one years. Mary is well remembered for her many years of work at The Vogue in Marquette. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and was active in the Messiah Quilters. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Presque Isle Chapter 403, and for many years she participated with Gordon in the activities of Masonic Lodge #101 and the Ahmed Temple Shrine. Mary and Gordon enjoyed many years of square dancing in the Marquette area. She loved spending time with her family and friends at their cottage on Lake Independence. Many generations have wonderful memories of "Mimi's Camp", her generosity, sense of humor, lively card games and love for her family.
Survivors include four sisters: Olga Paull, of the Eastwood Nursing Home in Negaunee, Astrid Singer of Canton, MI, and Doris (Robert) Hirst and Betty (Hampton) Waring, both of Hales Corners, WI; two brothers: Paul (Ruth) Amundsen of Elmhurst, IL and Clifford Amundsen of Milwaukee, WI; thirteen nieces and nephews, including Kay (David) Freeman of Marquette and Hampton (Mary Beth) Waring of Trenary, MI; twenty two grand and six great- grandnieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Gordon Yates in 1999, her parents, and four sisters; Frances Amundsen, Chicago, IL, Alice Wilks, Hales Corners, WI, Mabel Hultgren, Marquette and Elinor Amundsen, Ironwood, MI. A special thank you to Paula Saari and the excellent staff at Brookridge for their friendship and loving care to Mary and family, to Pastor Nancy Amacher and Pastor Tim Bernard from Messiah Lutheran Church for their spiritual support, to U.P. Home Health and Hospice for their compassion and support to Mary and her family, and to all her care- givers.

Thurman "Ted" Skarritt, Jr.
GERMFASK -- Thurman "Ted" Skarritt, Jr., age 69, died January 11, 2001 at his residence in Germfask, Michigan.
He was born April 10, 1931 in Newberry, Michigan the son of Thurman J. and Edna E. (Lustila) Skarritt, Sr., and has been a lifetime resident of Germfask. He attended school in Germfask and was a graduate of Manistique High School with the Class of 1949. He later served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. On January 7, 1956 he married the former Betty L. Willson in Angola, Indiana. Ted was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a rural route mail carrier for many years. He was a member of the St. Therese Catholic Church of Germfask, the Germfask- Seney Lions Club and the American Legion of Newberry. He was an avid fisherman and also enjoyed hunting and gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Skarritt of Germfask; a son, Michael Skarritt of Nahma; daughters, Roxanne Skarritt of Manistique and Cheryl Oliver of Durand, MI; Grandchildren, Kirk and Sara Oliver of Durand, and Stacey Skarritt of Manistique; his mother, Edna E. Skarritt of Manistique; a sister, Mona Sadler of Gilbert, AZ and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Lonny in 1979, his father Thurman in 1981, and his son-in-law Doug Oliver in 1997.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00PM on Sunday, January 14, 2001 at St. Therese Catholic Church in Germfask with Parish Prayers at 7:00 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 15, 2001 at St. Therese Catholic Church in Germfask with Father Glenn Theoret officiating.
Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Germfask.

Douglas D. Muljo
CALUMET, FULTON LOCATION -- Douglas D. Muljo, 58, of Fulton Location passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at the Marquette General Hospital where he was a patient for the past six days.
He was born in Ontonagon, MI, a son of Arthur and Marian (Jestila) Muljo Laity and graduated from Calumet High School. He also attended Suomi College for two years. He enlisted in the Navy and was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois. Doug worked in Chicago for several years at Etna Steel Mill, he sailed on the Great Lakes ore carriers and he was a diamond driller for Longyear Co. He enjoyed the outdoors; metal detecting, hunting and fishing. Doug was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Mohawk.
Preceding him in death were his father and one sister, Shirley Hatala. Surviving are his Mother, Marian of Mohawk; 7 Sons and Daughters, Lisa (Jeff) Schuster of Highlands Ranch, CO, Linda Muljo of Marquette, Scott (Stacey) Muljo of Lake Linden, Darren (Kim) Muljo of Marquette, Brian Muljo of Coer d'Alene, Idaho, Renee (Joe) Varios of Coer d'Alene, Idaho, Christopher Muljo of Baraga; 2 Brothers, Byron (Kathy) Muljo of Mohawk and Bruce Laity of Mohawk; 2 Sisters, Jean (Dion) Paquette of Lake Linden and Sharon (Mike) Rozich or Ahmeek; 7 Grandchildren; a special friend, Ruth Olkonen and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Upon the request of Doug, a private graveside service will be held in the spring at the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek. The Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mary "Lily" LaForest Jensen
ISHPEMING -- Mrs. Mary "Lily" LaForest Jensen, 88, formerly of Ishpeming, passed away Thursday afternoon at the Holly Hill Nursing Home in Newberry, Ohio. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 AM at St. Josephs Catholic Church with visitation at the church from 9AM until the time of service. KIVA -- Thomas K. Yokeum of Yokeum Road, Kiva, died on Saturday, January 6, 2001 at his home. He was born on January 8, 1946 in Munising. A memorial service will be conducted by Pastor Michael Wise on Monday, January 15, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at the Riverside Seventh Day Adventist Church in Osier, Michigan.
Mary "Lily" LaForest Jensen
ISHPEMING -- Mrs. Mary "Lily" LaForest Jensen, 88, passed away Thursday afternoon at the Holly Hill Nursing Home in Newberry, Ohio after a lengthy illness. Born March 19, 1912 on Keystone Hill in Champion, the daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Beatty) LaForest. She attended Champion schools then moved to Detroit where she worked for the Chrysler Motor Company. She married Mr. John Jensen, May 11, 1946 in Detroit. After retiring, they moved to Florida for 15 years, then moved to Ishpeming in 1985. Mrs. Jensen was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church, the St. Josephs Guild and the St. Anne Society.
She is survived by 1 daughter Mrs. Peter (Joan) Sachtjen of Greenville, North Carolina, 1 grandson, Jon Sachtjen of Los Angeles, 1 brother, Henry LaForest of Champion, 2 sisters, Mrs. Rose Decaire and Ms. Geraldine LaForest of Ishpeming. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1988; 3 brothers, Brother Laurian CSC, Walter and Alfred and 1 sister Mrs. Clara Pepin.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11AM at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Ishpeming with Fr. James Challancin to officiate. Friends may call from 9AM until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in the Champion Cemetery. The Racine Funeral Chapel of Ishpeming is handling the arrangements.
Richard I. (Andy) Anderson
ISHPEMING -- Richard I. (ANDY) Anderson, age 79, of 235 Copper St. Ishpeming, died Friday evening January 12, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he had been a patient since November.
Richard was born August 17, 1921 in Gaylord, MI. After graduating from High School he served in the U. S. Army during WW II. He later worked as Plant Manager at Midland Ross in Detroit and Motor Wheel in Lansing & Mendota, Illinois. He was a member of many civic organizations throughout his life. He was a member of the Forest Oaks Lutheran Church in Spring Hill, FL.
He is survived by his devoted daughter Gail A. Meier of Ishpeming, Grandchildren; Navy Commander John G. Meier & Wanda (Maki), stationed in Bahrain, Catherine( Kaye Meier) & Marine Major Andrew Gappy of Washington D. C., Amy (Meier) & Chris Merkle of Ann Arbor, Great Grandchildren; Brennan & Marta Gappy and Sydney Merkle, special friends; LeRoy & Faye Maki, John & Sheila Meier and children.
He was preceded in death by the beloved wife Catherine (Schauer) in 1985.
Funeral services will be held on Monday January 15, 2001 at 6 P. M. at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Lauri Maki to officiate. Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Monday from 4 until 6 P. M.

Thomas Floyd Lee
Negaunee -- Thomas Floyd Lee, age 84, of 212 E. Main St. Negaunee died at 12:00 A.M. on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at Bell Memorial Hospital where he had been a pateint for 3 days.
Mr. Lee was born Nov. 7, 1916 in Princeton, Ml to Thomas John & Anna Christine (Petersen) Lee and was a Negaunee resident for the past 24 years coming from Iron River. He was employed for many years as the civil superintendent for McKee Construction, retiring in 1980. He was a life member of the Negaunee Eagles Club.
Surviving are 2 sons; Thomas W. Lee, Negaunee, Michael D. (Roxanne) Lee, Ishpeming, a step-daughter, Colleen (Eugene) Boyle, Orlando, FL, 2 sisters; Anna Hayes, Gaastra, Lorraine (Barton) Sunne, Denver, CO, and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian (McKinney) in 1995.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. John J. Shiverski, pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. There will be no visitation, The family will greet friends at the Negaunee Eagles Club following the service on Tuesday
William M. (Bill) Trevarrow
LITTLE LAKE -- Wm. M. (Bill) Trevarrow, age 76, of 144 North Mehl Lake Drive, Little Lake, MI, died January 12, 2001 at home.
Bill was born in Ishperning, March 9, 1924 to Stella Mitchell and William Henry Trevarrow. After graduating from Denby High School (Detroit) in 1942, Bill attended Michigan State College before enlisting in the Navy, where he served until 1946. Bill then attended Michigan State University, where he was an editor for the university publishing firm, until 1949. In May of that same year Bill married Mary Ellen Wood and they set sail to live in London, Great Britain for a year.
Professionally, Trevarrow served as a publicist and writer for several large companies including Chrysler and Boeing in Detroit and in Washington, DC. In 1957 Bill moved his family to Washington, where he became an active member of the National Press Club and Aviation/Space Writers Association.
In 1985 Bill and Mary Ellen retired to the Upper Peninsula, building a permanent home at the family's camp on Mehl Lake. Back in the UP, Bill enjoyed the company of many new and life long friends, as well as the wild birds that surround his home. Bill became an active member of the Marquette County Historical Society (board member 1989 - 1996), The Historical Society of Michigan, the Forsyth Township Historical Society, and the Upper Peninsula Shortline Model Rail Road Club.
Bill will be remembered by those who new him for his dry wit, kind heart, and disdain for squirrels stealing food from bird feeders. Survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Ellen, four children; Cynthia Blush, William Wood Trevarrow, Roy Mitchell Trevarrow, and Ruth Trevarrow, and two grandchildren; William Joesph Trevarrow, and Ezmie Rose Trevarrow.
There will be no formal service. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, the Lake Superior Hospice, or the American Civil Liberties Union.
Sandra Jean
MARQUETTE -- Sandra Jean Caden, 52, of 1200 Russell Street, Marquette, died Friday evening at Marquette General Hospital with her family and friends at her side.
Mrs. Caden was born January 22, 1948 at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station in Green Cove Springs, Florida, a daughter of Gordon E. and Frances Joyce (Splan) Peltier. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School in 1966 and then attended Western Michigan University. She graduated from Northern Michigan University's School of Practical Nursing in 1968 and was a member of the first graduating class of NMU's School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1972.
Sandy worked as a Registered Nurse at both St, Mary's and St. Luke's Hospitals, and after graduation from NMU, taught in their school of nursing. She was also a substitute teacher for the
Marquette Area Public Schools for many years and worked in the library at Parkview Elementary School for 10 years.
Sandy's community activities included being a team mother for Marquette Junior Hockey, Little League and S A.Y. Soccer, was a Cub Scout leader for many years, was past president of Temple Beth Shalom, past president of Parkview School Association, past member of the Lakeview Arena Advisory Board, the Parents Advisory Council of the Marquette Area Public Schouls, the Marquette Area Public Schools Diversity Committee, and the Marquette Junior Hockey Corporation board of directors.
Sandy was serving as the current president of the Marquette Genealogical Society and also volunteered as a docent at the Lee Hall Gallery. She was a member of the Marquette Area Reading Council, American Association of University Women, the Marquette Study Club and Temple Beth Shalom.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Charles Caden whom she married on July 4, 1971 in Ishpeming; one son, Timothy Andrew Caden of Marquette; her mother, Frances Joyce Peltier of Bradenton, FL; one brother, David (Connie) Peltier of Albion, MI; her niece, Corinne E. Peltler; a nephew, Nicholas D. Peltier, both of Albion; her Godchild, Wendy Sue Woodbury of Applelon, WI; also surviving are aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends from the Schwartzfisher family, the Parkview School family, the Nottle and Mering families. Her father, Gordon E. Peltier, preceded her in death on December 25, 2000.
Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m. until the time of services scheduled for 4 p.m. in the funeral home with Dr. Harvey Wallace officiating. Interment will take place in the Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Davld Peltier, Jay Mering, Scot Fure, Glen Nottle, Ron Greenlee, Mike Williams and Blaine Olson. Honorary bearers are Matt, Mark, Mike, and Marshall Mering.

GWINN -- Ruth E. Pietila, 80, of 812 Horseshoe Drive, Gwinn, died Saturday, January 13, 2001 at Marquette General County Medical Care Facility. She was in ill health for several years.
Ruth was born in Rock on August 4, 1920 to the late Alex and Hilda (Hakuri) Mikkila. She was a resident of Marquette County for most of her life. She enjoyed being with her family, flower gardening, vegetable gardening and knitting.
Surviving are two daughters; Bonita Pietala of Burbank, CA, Kathleen Pietila of Sinfield, MI, three sons; John (Linda) Pietila of Gwinn, Alan (Pam) Pietila of Fifield, WI, Henry Pietila of Canoga Park, CA, one brother; Alrick (Fannie) Mikkila of Gladstone, one sister, Aili Miller of Alanson, MI, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Henry J. Pietila, sister Laura Mikkila, brother William Rosdet, daughter Sandra K. Pietila, grandson Dustin Pietila. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at 1:00 pm at the Perala Funeral Home with Rev. George Kaiser officiating. Burial will be in the Bakkala Cemetery.
