Emil Wiig
NEGAUNEE -- Emil Wiig, age 86, formerly of 715 Croix St. Negaunee died at 9:20 PM on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had resided since 1994.
Emil was born Dec. 31, 1914 in Negaunee to Julius & Katrina (Leppanen) Wiig, was a graduate of Negaunee High School and was a life long resident. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He worked for many years as a pumpman for the City of Negaunee at the Teal Lake Water Works, retiring in 1976. Emil was an avid outdoorsman and loved gardening, shoveling snow, and playing BINGO.
Surviving are one son, Robert Wiig, Marquette, 4 daughters; Merry Bjorne, Ishpeming, Kathleen (Ken) Blondeau, Marquette, Ann (Michael) Korhonen, Negaunee, Gloria Alexander, Marquette, 9 grandchildren; Heather (Todd) Martin, Grand Forks, ND, Wayne Bjorne, Madison, WI, Jason, Lindsay, & Matthew Blondeau, Cloea Wiig, Adele & Steven Shirkey, and Jonathan Alexander all of Marquette, 3 great grandchildren, Christian & Rachel Martin, Grand Forks, ND, Eleuria Bonnonewell, Marquette, a foster daughter, Diane Paananen, Lansing, several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Marion (Datson) in 1981, a grandson Bryan Blondeau, a son-in-law Douglas Bjorne, a daughter-in-law Patricia 'Kay' Wiig, 2 sisters; Lempi Nurmi & Lillian Wiig, 6 brothers; Onni, John, Arvid, Waino, Toivo, & Uno Wiig.
Private Funeral Services were held at 5:00 PM on Tuesday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. D. Michael Carriere, pastor of Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Emil's memory.
Emil's family wishes to give sincere thanks to the Special Needs Unit at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans for their tremendous care and support during Emil's years of residency there.
Grace E. Mazzali
MUNISING -- Grace E. Mazzali, age 77, of E8667 M-28 West, Munising, died following a lengthy illness on Wednesday January 10, 2001 at 1:40 p.m. at Marquette General Hospital. She was born on March 12, 1923 to the late John and Alma (Wendt) Mueller in Evanston, Michigan. Grace loved to travel and she and Charlie had taken many trips to different parts of the country. She was talented with arts and crafts and she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and quilting. Grace enjoyed watching Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls and she was a huge Tiger Illinois.
Juanita Magnusson
GWINN -- Juanita Hope Magnusson, 60, of 63 E. Sands Street, Gwinn, died Thursday morning at Marquette General Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Magnusson was born September 13, 1940 at Blowing Rock, North Carolina. The Gwinn Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mary H. Yates
MARQUETTE -- Mary H. Yates, 91, died January 10, 2001 at her home in Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility, 1901 Division St.
Mary was born December 3, 1909 in Ironwood, MI to the late Paul and Mina (Lundsrud) Amundsen and was a graduate of Ironwood High School. She moved to Marquette where she met and married Gordon Yates, her husband of almost sixty-one years. Mary is well remembered for her many years of work at The Vogue in Marquette. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and was active in the Messiah Quilters. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Presque Isle Chapter 403, and for many years she participated with Gordon in the activities of Masonic Lodge #101 and the Ahmed Temple Shrine. Mary and Gordon enjoyed many years of square dancing in the Marquette area. She loved spending time with her family and friends at their cottage on Lake Independence. Many generations have wonderful memories of "Mimi's Camp", her generosity, sense of humor, lively card games and love for her family.
Survivors include four sisters: Olga Paull, of the Eastwood Nursing Home in Negaunee, Astrid Singer of Canton, MI, and Doris (Robert) Hirst and Betty (Hampton) Waring, both of Hales Corners, WI; two brothers: Paul (Ruth) Amundsen of Elmhurst, IL and Clifford Amundsen of Milwaukee, WI; thirteen nieces and nephews, including Kay (David) Freeman of Marquette and Hampton (Mary Beth) Waring of Trenary, MI; twenty two grand and six great- grandnieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Gordon Yates in 1999, her parents, and four sisters; Frances Amundsen, Chicago, IL, Alice Wilks, Hales Corners, WI, Mabel Hultgren, Marquette and Elinor Amundsen, Ironwood, MI. A special thank you to Paula Saari and the excellent staff at Brookridge for their friendship and loving care to Mary and family, to Pastor Nancy Amacher and Pastor Tim Bernard from Messiah Lutheran Church for their spiritual support, to U.P. Home Health and Hospice for their compassion and support to Mary and her family, and to all her care- givers.
Visitation will be at Messiah Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 13, 2001 beginning at 10:00 AM. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM with Rev. Nancy Amacher and Rev. Tim Bernard officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery. The Swanson- Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Theda M. Kompsi
NEWBERRY -- Theda M. Kompsi, 78, of Newberry, died Wednesday evening January 10, 2001 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, January 15, 2001 at 10:00 am at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Newberry with F. George Maki officiating. Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home on Sunday, January 14th from 5-8 pm with prayers for the deceased to be recited at 7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Thurman "Ted" Skarritt, Jr.
GERMFASK -- Thurman "Ted" Skarritt, Jr., age 69, died January 11, 2001 at his residence in Germfask, Michigan the son of Thurman J. and Edna E. (Lustila) Skarritt, Sr., and has been a lifetime resident of Germfask. He attended school in Germfask and was a graduate of Manistique High School with the Class of 1949. He later served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. On January 7, 1956 he married the former Betty L. Willson in Angola, Illinois. Doug worked in Chicago for several years at Etna Steel Mill, he sailed on the Great Lakes ore carriers and he was a diamond driller for Longyear Co. He enjoyed the outdoors; metal detecting, hunting and fishing. Doug was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Mohawk.
Preceding him in death were his father and one sister, Shirley Hatala. Surviving are his Mother, Marian of Mohawk; 7 Sons and Daughters, Lisa (Jeff) Schuster of Highlands Ranch, CO, Linda Muljo of Marquette, Scott (Stacey) Muljo of Lake Linden, Darren (Kim) Muljo of Marquette, Brian Muljo of Coer d'Alene, Idaho, Renee (Joe) Varios of Coer d'Alene, Idaho, Christopher Muljo of Baraga; 2 Brothers, Byron (Kathy) Muljo of Mohawk and Bruce Laity of Mohawk; 2 Sisters, Jean (Dion) Paquette of Lake Linden and Sharon (Mike) Rozich or Ahmeek; 7 Grandchildren; a special friend, Ruth Olkonen and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Upon the request of Doug, a private graveside service will be held in the spring at the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek. The Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mary "Lily" LaForest Jensen, 88, formerly of Ishpeming, passed away Thursday afternoon at the Holly Hill Nursing Home in Newberry, Michigan.
Mary "Lily" LaForest Jensen, 88, passed away Thursday afternoon at the Holly Hill Nursing Home in Newberry, Jensen, May 11, 1946 in Detroit. After retiring, they moved to Jensen was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church, the St. Josephs Guild and the St. Anne Society.
She is survived by 1 daughter Mrs. Peter (Joan) Sachtjen of Greenville, Illinois. He was a member of many civic organizations throughout his life. He was a member of the Forest Oaks Lutheran Church in Spring Hill, FL.
He is survived by his devoted daughter Gail A. Meier of Ishpeming, Grandchildren; Navy Commander John G. Meier & Wanda (Maki), stationed in Bahrain, Catherine( Kaye Meier) & Marine Major Andrew Gappy of Michigan State College before enlisting in the Navy, where he served until 1946. Bill then attended Washington, DC. In 1957 Bill moved his family to Michigan, the Forsyth Township Historical Society, and the Upper Peninsula Shortline Model Rail Road Club.
Bill will be remembered by those who new him for his dry wit, kind heart, and disdain for squirrels stealing food from bird feeders. Survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Ellen, four children; Cynthia Blush, William Wood Trevarrow, Roy Mitchell Trevarrow, and Ruth Trevarrow, and two grandchildren; William Joesph Trevarrow, and Ezmie Rose Trevarrow.
There will be no formal service. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, the Lake Superior Hospice, or the American Civil Liberties Union.
Sandra Jean
MARQUETTE -- Sandra Jean Caden, 52, of 1200 Russell Street, Marquette, died Friday evening at Marquette General Hospital with her family and friends at her side.
Mrs. Caden was born January 22, 1948 at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station in Green Cove Springs, Michigan University. She graduated from Northern Michigan University's School of Practical Nursing in 1968 and was a member of the first graduating class of NMU's School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1972.
Sandy worked as a Registered Nurse at both St, Mary's and St. Luke's Hospitals, and after graduation from NMU, taught in their school of nursing. She was also a substitute teacher for the
Marquette Area Public Schools for many years and worked in the library at Parkview Elementary School for 10 years.
Sandy's community activities included being a team mother for Marquette Junior Hockey, Little League and S A.Y. Soccer, was a Cub Scout leader for many years, was past president of Temple Beth Shalom, past president of Parkview School Association, past member of the Lakeview Arena Advisory Board, the Parents Advisory Council of the Marquette Area Public Schouls, the Marquette Area Public Schools Diversity Committee, and the Marquette Junior Hockey Corporation board of directors.
Sandy was serving as the current president of the Marquette Genealogical Society and also volunteered as a docent at the Lee Hall Gallery. She was a member of the Marquette Area Reading Council, American Association of University Women, the Marquette Study Club and Temple Beth Shalom.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Charles Caden whom she married on July 4, 1971 in Ishpeming; one son, Timothy Andrew Caden of Marquette; her mother, Frances Joyce Peltier of Bradenton, FL; one brother, David (Connie) Peltier of Albion, MI; her niece, Corinne E. Peltler; a nephew, Nicholas D. Peltier, both of Albion; her Godchild, Wendy Sue Woodbury of Applelon, WI; also surviving are aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends from the Schwartzfisher family, the Parkview School family, the Nottle and Mering families. Her father, Gordon E. Peltier, preceded her in death on December 25, 2000.
Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m. until the time of services scheduled for 4 p.m. in the funeral home with Dr. Harvey Wallace officiating. Interment will take place in the Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Davld Peltier, Jay Mering, Scot Fure, Glen Nottle, Ron Greenlee, Mike Williams and Blaine Olson. Honorary bearers are Matt, Mark, Mike, and Marshall Mering.

Ruth E. Pietila
GWINN -- Ruth E. Pietila, 80, of 812 Horseshoe Drive, Gwinn, died Saturday, January 13, 2001 at Marquette General County Medical Care Facility. She was in ill health for several years.
Ruth was born in Rock on August 4, 1920 to the late Alex and Hilda (Hakuri) Mikkila. She was a resident of Marquette County for most of her life. She enjoyed being with her family, flower gardening, vegetable gardening and knitting.
Surviving are two daughters; Bonita Pietala of Burbank, CA, Kathleen Pietila of Sinfield, MI, three sons; John (Linda) Pietila of Gwinn, Alan (Pam) Pietila of Fifield, WI, Henry Pietila of Canoga Park, CA, one brother; Alrick (Fannie) Mikkila of Gladstone, one sister, Aili Miller of Alanson, MI, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Henry J. Pietila, sister Laura Mikkila, brother William Rosdet, daughter Sandra K. Pietila, grandson Dustin Pietila. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at 1:00 pm at the Perala Funeral Home with Rev. George Kaiser officiating. Burial will be in the Bakkala Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11:00 am until the time of services on Wednesday.
