Rose M. Olander

ISHPEMING -- Rose M. Olander, 81, 1735 Southwood Drive, Ishpeming, died at 9:15 PM on Saturday, June 16, 2001 at Bell Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Olander was born Dec. 24, 1919 in Princeton to James & Adele (Forini) Gravedoni and was a lifelong area resident. She worked as a seamstress at the H.W. Gossard Co. for 41 years.

Rose was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Ishpeming. Her hobbies included many different hand crafts & sewing. She was a great cook.

Surviving are 2 sons; Bernie (Evelyn) Stanaway, Ishpeming, Fred (Betty) Olander, Salt Lake City, UT, 1 brother, Guido Gravedoni, Green Bay, WI, 2 sisters; Maria Zopetti and Pat Gravedoni, both Negaunee, 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Arne F. Olander in 1987, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Funeral Services will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesday at the Koskey Fuenral Home with Msgr. Peter Oberto of St. John Church officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 5:00 PM until the time of services at 7:00 PM on Tuesday.

Roy A. Santti

WATTON, MI -- Roy A. Santti, 77, of Watton, Michigan passed away Friday, June 15, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Santti was born in Covington April 26, 1924, son of the late Arthur and Hilma (Rajala) Santti. He attended the Watton School and was a lifetime area resident. Roy was a self-employed logger until his retirement in 1986. On November 30, 1948, he married the former June Kunick in L'Anse, Michigan. During WWII, Roy served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Covington V.F.W. Post 8945 and the Michigan Timbermen's Association. Roy enjoyed hunting and was an avid reader in his spare time.

Mr. Santti is survived by his loving wife June, 3 sons, Donald Santti of Watton, Daniel (Vicki) Santti of Greenwood, WI and Duane Santti of Bruce Crossing, daughter Shirley (Gerald) Bennett of Watton, 11 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Russell Jacobson and Robert (Janet) Jacobson, both of Watton, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother Raymond and a grandson Joey Maki.

Funeral services for Mr. Santti will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Pastor David Snyder officiating. Grandsons will act as escorts and intermenty will take place in the Covington Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel and for 1 hour prior to the service on Tuesday. The Covington V.F.W. Post 8945 will conduct military rites at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the Chapel. The family was assisted by the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, Michigan.

Gary E. Miller
ISHPEMING -- Gary E. Miller, age 67, of 5993 Co. Rd. CD in Ely Twp., passed away on Sunday June 17, 2001 at his home.

Gary was born August 2, 1933 in Marinette, WI to the late Clarence and Cecelia (Derusha) Miller. He was a graduate of the Menominee High School, Class of 1951. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Gary worked in the construction industry in Menominee Co., Marquette Co. at the Tilden Mine, then worked in the Western United States and Hong Kong, retiring in 1991 as supervisor. Upon his retirement he moved to the Ishpeming area. He was a member of the American Legion- Lil-Larson Post, and was a member of the Mackinac Band of Chippewa Indians.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years- Betty of Ishpeming; 2 daughters- Christy (Jim) VanCourt of Rapid River and Connie Miller of Menominee; 2 sons- Paul (Lori) Miller of Escanaba and Clark (Jackie) Miller of Marinette, WI; a sister Gladys Marcus of Escanaba and a brother Franklin (Marlene) Biernat of Rice Lake, WI; 10 grandchildren- Jeremy VanCourt, Adam, Jessica, Michael, Kelly, Teresa, Ryan, Christy Jo and Mandy Miller, and Nicholas Davis; step-children- Carol (Boyde) Bergum of MS, Jan (Marv) Swanson, Ralph (Debbie) Pellow and Doug Pellow all of Ishpeming; step-grandchildren- Dana Sullivan, Eric and Jason Bergum, Jeramy, LeeAnn and Danielle Pellow, and Mike and Stephanie Swanson. He was preceded in death by a brother Robert and a sister Elaine.

There will be no visitation or services per Gary's request.

The Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jayne V. Hiebel

MARQUETTE -- Jayne V. Hiebel, 84, of 453 E. Michigan St., died Sunday, June 17, 2001 at her home.

She was born September 1, 1916 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Adolph and Clara (Christopher) Kitzman and had lived in this area for many years. A graduate of Northern Michigan University, she taught in the Marquette Public Schools, retiring in 1968. Lempi nee Koski (Peterson) Warlin

NEGAUNEE -- Lempi nee Koski (Peterson) Warlin, age 91, formerly of 26 Forge Rd. in Negaunee passed away on Monday June 18, 2001 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she had resided the past couple of years.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday June 23, 2001 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Negaunee with the Rev. Laurel Halverson-Bernard to officiate. Friends may call at the Church from 9:00 am until the time of services on Saturday.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.

John G. Shafer

MARQUETTE -- John G. Shafer, 48, of 625 High Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at his home.

He was born April 30, 1952 in Pontiac, son of the late Chester and M. Maybelle (Jones) Shafer, was raised in Pontiac, and was a 1971 graduate of Pontiac Central High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving a six year enlistment which included being stationed at the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base. Following his military discharge, he attended Northern Michigan University where he received a business degree in 1984. John was employed as a customer service representative for Ameritech and worked in Marquette until the local office closed. He later worked in Lansing and Wisconsin, retiring from Ameritech in 1999 when he moved back to Marquette.

Survivors include: two daughters, Dannielle (Sam) Provenzola of Walled Lake and Gretchen Nellist of Troy; three grandchildren, Luciano, Angelo, and John George Provenzola; three brothers, Richard (Judy) Shafer of Howell, Roger (Norma) Shafer of White Lake, and Jere Shafer of Pontiac, two nieces and two nephews.

The family will receive relatives and friends at a memorial celebration of John's life, on Saturday, June 23, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Fassbender Funeral Home. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 5:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Donaldson officiating.

Gravside services will be held at a later date at Oakland Hills Memorial Gardens in Novi.

Lempi nee Koski (Peterson) Warlin

NEGAUNEE -- Lempi nee Koski (Peterson) Warlin, age 91, formerly of 26 Forge Rd. in Negaunee passed away on Monday June 18, 2001 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she had resided the past couple of years.

Lempi was born September 5, 1909 in Humboldt to the late Peter and Hilma (Hietiniemi) Koski, and was raised in Black River (Republic). She married Frank Peterson and then moved to Cahfornia in the early 1930's. She moved back to this area in 1959 and has resided here since.

Lempi was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Negaunee, and a former member of the Michigamme Lutheran Church where she had sang in the church choir and had been a Sunday school teacher. She was a former Gold Star Mother for the American Legion- Michigamme Post.

Survivors include five daughters- Marie (John) Lyford of Yuba City, CA, Millie (Alex) Harmon of Parker, WA, Julianna (Albert) Rodriquez of Los Angles, CA, Esther (Harold) Plattenberg of Negaunee and Eleanor (Larry) Balagna of Negaunee; a son-in-law- David Lentz Jr. of Michigamme; two sisters- Saimi Johnson of Tampa, FL and Ellen Aho of Republic; a sister-in-law Wilma Koski of Michigamme; Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; step-children- Elvi Wickstrom of Negaunee, Elsie (Norman) Martti of Republic, Bernard (Ruth) Warlin of West Allis, WI, James Warlin of Springbrook, WI, Leslie (Jean) Warlin of Diorite Loc. and Melvin (Dina) Warlin of Michigamme; Numerous step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Frank Peterson, her second husband Isaac Warlin; two sons - Benjamin Peterson and Abraham Peterson; two daughters - Norma Saari and Amelia "Dottie" Lentz; a step-son William Warlin; brothers - Waino, John, Peter and Reino Koski and a sister Lydia Rast.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM. Saturday, June 23, 2001 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Negaunee with the Rev. Laurel Halverson-Bernard to officiate. Friends may call at the Church from 9:00 AM until the time of services on Saturday. Burial will be in the Humboldt Twp. Cemetery at 2:30 PM.

Pallbearers will be Grandsons- Harold Plattenberg Jr., David Plattenberg, Darryl Skytta, Peter Evans, Phillip and Martin Peterson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Grandsons- Duane Plattenberg & Charlie Lentz.

Lempi will be remembered for her loving generous spirit, all the beautiful hand crochet gifts that she has given freely to others and her strong faith and love of God.

Sarah E. Laitinen

ROCK -- Sarah E. Laitinen, 72, of 2616 West Maple Ridge 37th Road, Rock, and a former Negaunee resident died at 4:41 PM on Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where she had been a patient for 2 days.

Sarah was born August 31, 1928 in Ishpeming and was a graduate of Negaunee High School. She lived most of her life in Negaunee and was a Gwinn resident for 2 years before moving to Rock one month ago. She was a former member of the V.A. Romo Post #3165 V.F.W. Auxiliary. Her family was everything to her and she loved to bake.

Surviving are 2 sons: Mel (Carol) Laitinen of Roy, WA and Raymond (Patrice) Laitinen of Skandia; 6 grandchildren: Todd, Scott, Michael, Jerry, Amanda and Daniel Laitinen; 2 great grandchildren: Cameron and Courtney Pirhonen; a special friend, William Hoch of Rock; a brother-in-law, Reino Laitinen of Negaunee; a sister-in-law, Mildred Wiggert of Blacksburg, VA; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ida (Maki) and Eric Wiita and her husband, Heimo H. Laitinen in 1998.

A private service will be held at the Koskey Funeral Home at 3:00 PM on Friday with Vicar Lisa Barry of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee, officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. There will be no public visitation.

William H. Waatti

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI -- William H. Waatti, 88, passed away Friday, June 15, 2001 at the Chippewa County War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was born March 29, 1913 in Tapiola, MI to Hiskias and Pauline (Jussola) Waatti and grew up in the Copper Country. He worked as a logger while living in the Copper Country, later moving to Detroit where he worked as a butcher for many years. Following his retirement he returned to the U.P. where he lived in L'Anse, Ishpeming and Kinross.

He is survived by a brother Jacob (Eleanor) Waatti of Marquette, five nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Alice, and brothers Matt, Rueben and John.

Private graveside services will be held at the Amasa Cemetery in Amasa, MI at a later date. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hely E. Carter
CENTERVILLE, OH -- Hely E. Carter, age 91, formerly of 1303 N. 2nd St., Ishpeming, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at Bethany Lutheran Village in Centerville, OH.

Hely was born February 7, 1910 in Crystal Falls, MI to the late Gabriel and Emilia (Kallio) Ranta. Hely graduated from Stambaugh (West Iron Co.) High School and Northern State Teachers College (N.M.U.) June 18, 1929. She taught grade school at the former North Lake School. Hely was a life member of MEA and a member of the Grace Episcopal Church of Ishpeming.

Hely is survived by a daughter Helyn (Robert) LaFreniere of Bellbrook, OH; a son John E. (Jean) Carter of Michigamme; a sister-in-law Signe Carter of Ishpeming; 6 grandchildren- Susan Stingley, Rob LaFreniere, Pam Carter, Kathy Ramsey, John Carter and Jeff Carter; 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband John H. in 1986, whom she married on June 15, 1935.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 pm Saturday, June 23, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Virginia Peacock officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Saturday from 1:00 pm until the time of service.

Jeanette M. Olgren

NEGAUNEE TWP. -- Jeanette M. Olgren, age 61 of 53 Forest Dr., Negaunee Twp. passed away on Thursday June 21, 2001 at her home.

Jeanette was born August 1, 1939 in Phoenix, MI. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Jennie (Tulppo) Lehto. Jeanette came to this area at a young age and was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1957. She was a homemaker who loved her children, grandchildren and her husband. Her hobbies included gardening, crocheting and reading. Jeanette was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Martin R. Olgren Sr. of Negaunee Twp.; a daughter and son-in-law Linda Jean and Michael Carlson of Negaunee Twp.; 3 sons and daughters-in- law Martin Robert and Jacklyn Olgren Jr. of Calumet, Leland Nels and Kriss Olgren of Frankenmuth, MI and Leonard Neal and Lenora Olgren of Negaunee Twp.; a sister Dorothy Fedorow of Chicago, IL; 3 brothers and sisters-in-law Carl G. and Carol Lehto of Ishpeming, James C. and Joy Lehto of Sublette, IL and Richard P. and Joyce Lehto of Ishpeming; a special sister-in-law Joyce M. Lehto of Ishpeming; 10 grandchildren - Adam and Angela Rose, Michael Lyons, Martin Olgren III, Matthew, Stephen, Hannah, Melissa Marie, Alexa, and Jenna Marie Olgren; a great grandson Noah Rose along with several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother Clifford Lehto and a sister Ruth Gustafson.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00PM on Saturday, June 23, 2001 at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Ishpeming Twp. with Rueben Anderson to officiate. Entombment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens.

Friends may call at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Ishpeming Twp. from 2:00 until 4:00 PM on Saturday.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Jeanette's Grandsons.

The family wishes to thank Lake Superior Hospice and especially Jamie Lancour for the special care shown to Jeanette and her family during this time.

Anne Shortt Burt
MARQUETTE -- Burial rites for Anne Shortt Burt, wife of the late Alfred S. Burt, a Marquette native and well-known songwriter, will take place at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, East Ridge Street on Wednesday, June 23 at 11:00 am. Burial will follow thereafter in the Burt family plot at Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Burt died in California earlier this year. She had been a frequent visitor to Marquette with her late composer husband during many summertimes.

A native of Pontiac, Michigan, Mrs. Burt is survived by one daughter, Diane, the present Mrs. Nicholas D'Amico of Idyllwild, California. Her brother-in-law, the Ret. Rev. John H. Burt, who now lives in retirement at Middle Island Point, will conduct the rites for his late sister-in-law.

Anne Burt, who was a trained nurse, served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Later, she sang with several well-known dance orchestras. Her daughter, Diane, the present Mrs. Nicholas D'Amico of Idyllwild, California, plans to be here for these final rites.

Barbara Rose Anstett

SHINGLETON/ BOOT LAKE -- Barbara Rose Anstett, age 87, of 9937N Graves Road, died on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 in the morning at her home. She was born on May 13, 1914 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late John and Elizabeth Roth. Barbara was raised on her parent's farm in Centerline, Michigan and attended St. Clemens Catholic School. She worked at Theut's Drug Store before marrying Roy E. Anstett on August 3, 1935 in Centerline. They moved to Harrison Township in 1948. Barbara was a homemaker and a member of St. Louis Catholic Church. Her family vacationed often at their property near Boot Lake and following Roy's retirement, they moved there in 1977. Barbara had been a Girl Scout Leader and was a talented and avid bowler. She helped organize the first Junior Bowling League in Macomb County. Besides bowling, she had enjoyed sewing, embroidering, cooking (her specialty being goulash), baking, and canning.

She is survived by her four children- Wilma (Walter) Miller of Harrison Township, Wendlin "Bill" Anstett of Defiance, Ohio, Patricia (Larry) Wybo of Chesterfield, MI and Roy Peter Anstett of Harrison Township; a foster daughter- Dawn Knight of Missouri; 14 grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; sister- Helen Schmuhl of Centerline, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of over fifty-four years, Roy, daughters, Shirley Jean Charles and Royalene Ann Pagel, and a grandson, John Joseph Miller.

Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Deacon James E. Anderson will conduct the funeral from the Bowerman Funeral Chapel in Munising on Monday, June 25, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow the funeral at the Hiawatha Township Cemetery in Schoolcraft County.

Arnold W. Heltunen
CALUMET -- Arnold W. Heltunen, 88, of Calumet passed away Saturday, June 23, 2001, at the Marquette General Hosptial where he was a patient for the past two days.

He was born in Mason, MI, a son of John and Ida (Palosaari) Heltunen on April 25, 1913, and he attended the Aura School. Arnold worked in the Lumber camps in the Upper Peninsula, the CCC Camp in Grayling and for the civil service in Panama. He was a veteran of WWII having served with the US Marine Corps in the South Pacific. He was united in marriage to Mildred Junttila on April 5, 1947, and the couple resided in Southfield, MI. Arnold was employed with the Chrysler Corp. for thirty years. He retired in 1976 and moved Calumet. He was a member of the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother, Edwin and an infant sister, Adele.

Survivng are his wife, Mildred, a son, Robert (JoAnne) Heltunen of Laurium, three daughters, Kathy (Paul) Kero of Negaunee, MI, Jean (Bob) Edwards of Ishpeming, MI, Carol (Hans) Impola of Brainerd, MN, four brothers, John Jr., (Ida) of Aura, Herman of L'Anse, Paul (Phyllis) of Spring Hill, FL., Ralph (Ginny) of Redford, MI, four sisters, Verna Drummond of Aura, Ann (Ralph) Severence of Sutton's Bay, MI., Phyllis (Bob) Rogers of Aiken, SC, Sylvia Golka of Adams, Mass., a sister in law, Julia Heltunen of Northville, MI, 29 grandchildren, Lisa, (Marty) Rajala, Jodi (Duane) Pietila, Bruce, Eric Kari, Lori, James, Aaron Heltunen, Matt, Greta, Nathan Kero, Wendy, Holly, Mandy, Owen, Luke, Lindy, Logan, Claire, Jeanne Edwards, Henrik, Hannah, Alex, Morgan, Evan, Quinn, Garrett, Katrina Impola, 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service for Mr. Heltunen will be held Wednesday at 11 AM in the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet with Rev. Richard Eskola officiating. Interment will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet. Friends may call from 4-9 PM Tuesday at the Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Ralph E. Bailey

MARQUETTE -- Ralph E. Bailey, a resident of Marquette since 1965, passed away June 23, 2001. He was born in Greenville, Ohio on March 9, 1922. He graduated from Greenville High School with the class of 1940. He served our nation and the cause of freedom as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve in World War II, earning a bronze star for antisubmarine work in the Atlantic aboard USS Willis (DE-395), and commendation for serving aboard USS Rednour (APD-102) off Okinawa in the largest air-sea battle in history.

Ralph had a great passion for the outdoors and conservation. He deeply loved fishing, hiking, backpacking, camping and, most of all, hunting. These interests influenced his life and his career. After wartime service, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Management at the University of Minnesota. He went to work for the Michigan Department of Conservation in 1947, beginning a career that would span 37 years. He was involved in research and the Farm Game program in his early years, moving on in the 1950s to become District Wildlife Biologist at the Jackson District Office, overseeing wildlife programs in a number of southern Michigan counties including habitat improvements, waterfowl floodings and other projects in the Waterloo, Chelsea, Sharonville, Pinckney, Lost Nation, Pte. Mouilleee and other State Game Areas.

In 1965 the Department of Conservation became the Department of Natural Resources, and he took over as Regional Wildlife Biologist in Marquette, overseeing all wildlife programs in the Upper Peninsula. Before his retirement in 1984, his major accomplishments included laying the groundwork for the reintroduction of moose in the central UP, a program that has been a great wildlife success. He also served as Team Leader of the Eastern Timber Wolf Recovery Team and continued as a member of that team until his death.

He served as a volunteer for several years at Marquette General Hospital and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Marquette which he served at various times as Deacon, Elder and volunteer. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and numerous conservation and wildlife organizations.

He is survived by and will always be loved by his wife of 50 years, E. Jean Bailey who remains in Marquette; his sister Lucille King and her husband Roma of Dallas Texas; daughter Catherine Wilson and her husband George of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; son Tom and his wife Jane of Harbor Springs Michigan; granddaughters Sarah (Wilson) Finn and her husband Thomas, Rebecca Wilson and her fiance' Eric Carlson, and grandson John Bailey.

In lieu of flowers the family recommends memorial contributions in Ralph's name to one of the following: the First Presbyterian Church of Marquette, 120 N. Front St. Marquette, MI, 49855; or The International Wolf Center, Administrative Office, 5930 Brooklyn Blvd., Minneapolis, MN 55429-2518; or Little Traverse Conservancy, 3264 Powell Rd., Harbor Springs, MI, 49740.

A Memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Marquette on Thursday, June 28th at 2 PM. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
