Richard Ken "Fat" Ninnis

ESCANABA - Richard Ken "Fat" Ninnis, former Ishpeming resident, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at the Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba where he has resided for the past 8 years.

Richard was born July 2, 1911 in Ishpeming to the late William and Linda (Brown) Ninnis. He worked 33 years as an underground miner for C.C.I. Mining Co. at Cliffs Shaft and Mather B. Mines, retiring in 1973. Richard was an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing cribbage. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Ishpeming.

Richard is survived by a daughter Beverly (Louis) Martin of Gladstone, a son Bernard (Anita) Mattila of Ishpeming, a sister Kathleen Moyle of Negaunee, 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sylvia in 1997, 3 brothers Henry Ostermeyer, William Ninnis and Clifford Ninnis, and 2 sisters Carol Dally and Fern Granlund.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at the United Presbyterian Church in Ishpeming. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Memorials can be directed to the United Presbyterian Church of Ishpeming or the Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.

Carl Lloyd Robbins
LITTLE LAKE -- Carl Lloyd Robbins, age 73, of 451 N. Farmers Lake Rd., passed away May 30, 2001, at Marquette General Hospital, following his third stroke.

He was born November 11, 1927, in Port Hope, Michigan to G. Lloyd and Mathilda (Hubbard) Robbins and had lived in the Upper Peninsula the past 34 years. Prior to retiring in 1990 he was manager of the Chatham Coop for 18 years. He was an active and involved member of the Little Lake Gospel Chapel.

Carl is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Cronk; they would have been married for 50 years on June 23, 2001. Other survivors include a daughter, Jodie (Phil) Guinn of Elmira, New York; three sons, Jay of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Klay (Sara) of Managua, Nicaragua and Kelly (Christine) of West Bend, Wisconsin; a sister, Mildred Eastlund of Savage, Minnesota; three brothers, Raymond of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Norman of Sandpoint, Michigan, and Howard of St. Lucie, Florida; and nine grandchildren, Heather, Andrea, Philip, Colton, Dru, Alex, Jamie, Elizabeth, and Sara Elizabeth.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, June 3, 2001 in the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with Mr. Jack Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Gwinn Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at the funeral home at 12 noon on Sunday.

Memorials may be directed to the Little Lake Gospel Chapel.

Dorothy I. Umbarger

GWINN -- Dorothy I. Umbarger, 70, of 760 W. Ironwood Road, Gwinn, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming where she had been a patient for 10 days. She was in ill health for several years.

She was born April 8, 1931, to the late Arnold and Marie (Beyersdorf) Wendt in Split Rock, WI. Dorothy was a resident of Gwinn since 1947 and graduated from Gwinn High School. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School at one time.

Surviving are one son, Daryl Umbarger of Princeton, one daughter, Vicki Laituri of Princeton, two brothers, Howard (Dorothy) Wendt of Suomi Location and Clyde (Betty) Wendt of Grayslake, IL, one sister, Florence Meyers of San Diego, CA, five grandchildren, Michelle, Gablowski, Theresa Umbarger, Marie Umbarger, Crystal Laituri, and Kerry Laituri and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis, one brother, Ervin Wendt, one sister, Alice Trottier and her parents.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 2, 2001 at 2:00 pm at the Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Nancy Kauppi officiating. Friends may call at the church with 1:00p.m.on Saturday until the time of services. Burial will be in the Gwinn Cemetery. Perala Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dora "Dorrie" L. Beltz
McMILLAN -- Dora "Dorrie" L. Beltz, 75, of McMillan, died Monday afternoon June 25, 2001 at the Jim Reynolds AFC Home in Lakefield Township. Funeral services will be held Thursday June 28, 2001 at 4:00 pm at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Pastor David Buhman officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday June 28th from 2-4pm. Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.

Edwin E. "Ed" Korby

MARQUETTE -- Edwin E. "Ed" Korby, 94, of 1408 Woodland Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal life early Tuesday morning, June 26, 2001, at his home in the comforting care of his daughter-in-law, Paulita Korby. He had been in ill health for the past three years. Arrangements will be announced by the Fassbender Funeral Home.

Einar John Johnson

GWINN - Einar John Johnson, 58, of 2130 W. M-35, Gwinn, passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2001 at the Clement-Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee surrounded by his family.

He was born July 28, 1942 in Ishpeming to the late Einar John and Alli (Luokkala) Johnson. Einar was married to Suzanne Franson for 27 years and later divorced.

He served in the Navy in the Bay of Pigs and graduated from Gwinn High School in 1987 along with his son David. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Einar is survived by five sons: David (Tanya) of Negaunee, Dennis of Gwinn, Duane (Becky) of Prattsburgh, NY, and Daryl and Derick of Gwinn, one daughter: Stacie, who was his angel, and grandchildren: Alexandra, Andrew, Duane Jr., Dylan, Damian, Devin, Ian Badge, and Kolton Redekop. Also surviving are brothers and sisters: Alice Jean Dahlstrom of San Diego, CA, Bernhard Hill of Apple Valley, CA, Bruce Hill of Negaunee, Verona (David) Wehmanen of Negaunee, Steven (Jean) Hill of Ishpeming, Daniel (Nancy) Hill of Spencer, WI, June (Woodrow) Kurtley of Iron Mountain, Betty (William) Logan of Detroit and Elaine (Bob) Pepin of National Mine, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Also surviving is his ex-wife, Suzanne and a special friend, Linda Symons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Einar and Alli, stepfather Jalmer Hill, one brother-in-law David Wehmanen, two brothers Charles "Boyu" Hill and Melvin Hill, three sisters Gail (Clifford) Jandron, Virginia (Mike) King, and Sharon (Ken) Lequia, and granddaughter Courtney Diane Johnson.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 28, 2001 at 2:00pm at the Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church in Negaunee with Rev. D. Michael Carriere officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 27, 2001 from 5 to 8 pm at the Perala Funeral Home and also at the church on Thursday from 1:00 pm until the time of services. Burial will be in the Bakkala Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his six children.

Elizabeth I. Klinzing

NEWBERRY -- Elizabeth I. Klinzing, 76, of Newberry, died Sunday morning, June 24, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born August 28, 1924 in Newberry, daughter of the late Ivar & Emma (Elsie) Mattson, Elizabeth was a 1942 graduate of Newberry High School. On September 18, 1948 she married Joseph Klinzing in Newberry and resided in Chicago, Illinois for over 25 years moving back to Newberry in 1975. A devoted housewife and homemaker, Elizabeth enjoyed reading and casino gambling but more importantly she loved the time spent with her family and grandchildren. She also valued the simplicity and peacefulness of nature and she spent time gardening, growing flowers, watching wildlife and also the company of her three dogs.

Besides her parents, Elizabeth is preceded in death by her sister Helen Stewart and brother James Mattson. Survivors include her husband of over 52 years Joseph of Newberry; son Guy (Laura) of Woodridge, IL; daughters Lisa (Chris) Briggs of Newaygo and Cynthia (Edward) Schroeder of Marquette; six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 28, 2001 at 10:00 am at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Emma Dumas presiding. Interment will follow at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 27th from 5-8 pm.

Those who wish may contribute to the Luce County Chapter of the American Cancer Society in memory of Elizabeth I. Klinzing.

Rhea M. Tyll

HULBERT -- Rhea M. Tyll, 74, of Hulbert, died Friday evening June 22, 2001 at the Luce County Annex in Newberry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday June 27, 2001 at 10:00 am t St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Newberry with Fr. George Maki officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at Hulbert Township Cemetery. Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.

Angela "Angie" Carlson
LIMESTONE ­ A memorial celebration in honor of the life of Angela Stella Maris "Angie" Carlson, will be held on Saturday, June 30, from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the home of Elmer Qualmann (next to Angie's former residence) N1994 Highway 67, Limestone. Angie, 83, of Limestone, entered eternal life December 17, 2000 in Munising. At her request, no formal services were scheduled, in favor of her desire for a time for friends and family to gather through the sharing of good food, fond remembrences, and laughter. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.

Bertha Caroline Parent

MARQUETTE -- Bertha Caroline Parent, 99, formerly of 1445 Birch Ave., died Monday, June 25, 2001 in the Norlite Nursing Center.

She was born March 15, 1902 in Kall, Sweden to Peter and Bertha (Nelson) Munter and had lived in this area since 1928. For many years Bertha worked as a house matron for the Lemon and Harlow Clark families in Marquette. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a nephew Ray Wright of Ohio, a niece Jeanie Fronnhofer of Michigan and two nieces in California. Her husband Joseph preceded her in death in 1978.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, June 29, 2001 in Park Cemetery. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bill Stewart

SUPERIOR, WI ­ Whether a cowboy masquerading as a reporter or vice versa, Bill Stewart has kicked off his boots and closed up his typewriter for the last time. Born William Wallace Stewart Jr., July 8, 1915, in South Superior, Wisconsin, to William and Esther (Cronk) Stewart, he died June 26, 2001, in Ishpeming, Michigan. He lived life to its fullest for 85 years and, as a writer, story teller, rope spinner, harmonica player, and rodeo promoter, enriched the lives of many.

He is survived by 3 daughters, Barbarra (Jon) Harkness of Barnes, Wisconsin, Sarah Rogers of Alpine, Texas, Kathy (Bruce) Houghton of Ishpeming, a son Bill (Kathy) Stewart of Spooner, Wisconsion, grandsons, Jay and Harry Harkness, Gilbert and John Rogers, Will and Robbie Stewart, and granddaughters, Elizabeth and Sarah Houghton. He is also survived by sisters, Mary Brink and Katherine Chastain. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (Turney) Stewart, and a brother, Charles Stewart.

Visitation will be at the Dahl Funeral Home, Spooner Wisconsin on Friday, July 6, followed by a memorial service at St. Alban's Church in Spooner at 5:00p.m. A burial service will be held at the Barnes, Wisconsin cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 7. A memorial is being established.

Edwin E. "Ed" Korby

MARQUETTE -- Edwin E. "Ed" Korby, 94, of 1408 Woodland Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal life early Tuesday morning, June 26, 2001, at his home in the comforting care of his daughter-in-law, Paulita Korby, and Lake Superior Hospice. He had been in ill health for the past three years. Ed was born April 20, 1907 in Calumet, a son of the late Emanuel and Keiti (Anna Katherine Starka) Korpi, and was raised in the Calumet area. He had been a Marquette resident since 1938. An automobile mechanic by trade, Ed had worked at Specker Motors, Frei Chevrolet, and in the automotive department of Montgomery Wards for several years, retiring in 1972. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and target shooting. He was also an avid bowler. He was a former member of the Marquette Rod and Gun Club. A loving father, proud grandparent, and brother, he is survived by: his son, Darryl (Paulita) Korby of Marquette; his grandchildren, Lori (Chris) Midlow and Darren Korby; great-granddaughter, Meredith Ann Midlow; great-grandson, Michael A. Midlow; a sister, Ann (Leon) James of McEwen, TN; sister-in-law, Agnes Korpi of Northville; a niece, Kathy (Steve) McCloskey of Paw Paw; three nephews, Peter (Pat) Roeder of Escanaba, James vanWestrienen of Paw Paw, and Ron (Judith) Korpi of Detroit; and a cousin, Ingrid Erickson of Marquette. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Anderson) Korby in 1983; sisters, Jennie Storm, Sigrid Kessler, and Lillian Sollman; brothers, William Korby and George Korpi; and a niece, Donna vanWestrienen.

Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Thursday, June 28, beginning at 4:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Lawrence Gauthier officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow in the St. Christopher Catholic Church fellowship hall. Burial will be made in the Negaunee Cemetery.

Walter R. Wuorenmaa

REPUBLIC -- Walter R. Wuorenmaa, age 85 of Rt. 1 Box 147 C., Republic, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming, where he had been a resident for the past 11 days.

Walter was born May 31, 1916 in Ishpeming to the late John and Josephine (Plukka) Wuorenmaa. Walter served in the United States Army during World War II, having received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He moved to Republic in his late 20's and worked for the C.C.I. Co. at the Cliffs Shaft for 32 years and then at the Bethany Lutheran Church and the V.F.W. Grant-Nyman Post in Republic.

Survivors include his wife Irma of Republic, a daughter Cynthia Brajdic of Fond du Lac, WI; 2 sisters Elizabeth (Frank) Buytaret of Ishpeming and Esther (Ralph) Robinson of Ishpeming, a brother Paul (Audrey) Wuorenmaa of Ishpeming; 3 grandchildren- Angela (Christopher) Ryan, Michael Fleming and Benjamin J. Brajdic all of Fond du Lac, WI; along with several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by brothers- William, George, Leo and Martin Wuorenmaa; and sisters Ruth Peck and Marie Eade.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 29, 2001 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic with the Rev. Lance Roberts to officiate. Burial will be in the Republic Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Bethany Lutheran Church from 10 until 11 AM on Friday. Pallbearers will be Michael Fleming, Benjamin Brajdic, Christopher Ryan, Paul Wuorenmaa, Ray Mattson and Larry Mattson. The Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bertha L. Morrison
SENEY -- Bertha L. Morrison, age 96, of First Street, Seney, died on Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at 11:45 pm at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born in Van Meer, Michigan on May 8, 1905 to the late David and Eva (Syers) Ketchum. Bertha's mother died when she was eight years old and her grandparents, William and Louella Needham raised her. Bertha attended school in Van Meer and she had worked at the Old Munising Hospital. On June 10, 1922, she married Francis F. Morrison. She lived most of her life as a businesswoman in Seney. Bertha picked blueberries and ferns for a living and she owned and operated the Old Seney Hotel, the B & M Tavern in Germfask, and the Seney Party Store, which was also a restaurant and gas station before becoming The Party Store. Bertha had cooked in the logging camps and she was a midwife, delivering many babies in Seney and Germfask. Bertha was a member of the Grace Methodist Church in Germfask and had been a past member of the Eastern Star. She was the Seney Township Treasurer for a few years, and she also helped her husband do the tax rolls and keep the books for twenty-five years while Francis served as the Seney Township Clerk. She also worked as a volunteer at the Seney Wildlife Refuge. Bertha loved fishing and hunting. She stopped hunting at the age of 94 when she bagged her last buck. Her story was featured in the Detroit Free Press and the Grand Marais Pilot.

She is survived by her children- E. June Nettleton of Munising, Francis L. (William) Roberts of Munising, and David (Ruth) Morrison of Seney; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Francis, in 1967, a son Billy, an infant daughter, Beverly, two grandsons, William David Roberts and Timothy Allen Nettleton, a son-in-law, Donald A. Nettleton, a brother, Albert Ketchum, and her grandparents who raised her, William and Louella Needham who were Alger County's first automobile fatalities. They were killed on the Tannery Hill in 1926.

Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00. The funeral will be conducted at the Bowerman Funeral Chapel on Saturday, June 30, 2001 at 11:00 pm. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. She will be escorted by her grandsons, Mike, Tom, and Tony Nettleton, Ronald and Terry Roberts, and Don Reed.

Joseph H. Newman

PALMER -- Joseph H. Newman, Sr., age 84, of 402 Isabella Ave., Palmer died at 12:28 AM on Thursday, June 28, 2001, at his home.

Joe was born Dec. 25, 1916 in Palmer to Fredrick & Anna (Domagalski) Newman, attended the Kirkpatrick School, and was a lifelong resident. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He worked as an underground miner starting at the Volunteer Mine in 1936. He joined Cleveland Cliffs in 1946 at the Neaunee Mine and also worked at the Cambria, Mather A, Mather B, & Empire Mines. When laid off from CCI he worked for the Marquette County Road Commission and also for Gunlock Construction building the Empire Mine from ground level on up. He retired from the Empire Mine on his birthday in 1978 with 33 years of service.

Joe was an avid outdoorsman, hunter & fisherman. He loved to garden and gave most of his vegetables to his neighbors. Other hobbies included woodworking, cutting firewood, shoveling snow, riding his four- wheeler and watching high school & N.I.T. basketball. He and his wife both loved animals.

Surviving are his wife Elaine (Menapace) whom he married on Feb. 19, 1944, a son, Joseph H. (Shirley) Newman Jr., Palmer, a granddaughter, Amy (Robert) Luke, Marquette, a brother, Robert Neuman, Palmer, a sister, Alice Jacobson, Ishpeming, several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters; Elizabeth, Dorothy, Agnes, & Mary, 3 brothers; Clem, Fredrick, & George.

Funeral services will be held a 11:00 AM on Monday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. George R. Kaiser officiating. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens.

Friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 4-6 PM on Sunday.

Dorothy M. Pearson
ISHPEMING -- Dorothy M. Pearson, age 76, of 2000 Jackson Ave., Ishpeming, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Home after a courageous battle with cancer and in the care of her family.

Dorothy was born July 28, 1924 in Negaunee to the late Walter and Rose (Mager) Sandberg. She was a homemaker and a life long area resident.

Dorothy was a member of Church of Our Savior in Negaunee and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. She formerly played in the Negaunee Horseshoe League and the Ishpeming Bowling League and was an avid Bingo player.

Dorothy is survived by 3 children: Bonnie (Joseph) Sharland, Douglas (Susan) Pearson, and Steven (Marjorie) Pearson; a sister Gail Sipola and a brother Edward (Edith) Sandberg all of Ishpeming; 9 grandchildren: Kristin (Paul) Richards of Ishpeming, Brad Sharland of Montreal, WI, Heather Pearson of Warren, MI, Brant Pearson of Ishpeming, Amy (Jeff) Haney of Huber Heights, OH, Kelly (fiance Brian Matthews) Pearson of Ishpeming and Annette (fiance Ryan Swanson) Pearson of Ishpeming, Scott (Libby) Olson of Ishpeming and Lori (Leonard) Dominguez of Sacramento, CA; 7 great grandchildren: Scott Olson, Klaye Olson, Shasta Olson, Chad Swanson, Bryce Haney, Erica and Shannel Dominguez; several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Reuben Pearson, Jr., a daughter Susan Olson, and a sister Shirley Taylor.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 2, 2001 at 7:00pm at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Pastor Chuck Tooman officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Monday from 5:00pm until the time of service.

Edith Darling Harper

WOODBRIDGE, VA -- Edith Darling Harper, 93, a formerly of Marquette, died June 26, 2001 in Woodbridge, Virginia where she had resided since 1993.

She was born March 5, 1908 in Ishpeming to David and Jennie (Tremethick) Reed, was a graduate of Ishpeming High School, and attended Northern Normal School. Edith began working for the City of Marquette as an administrative Assistant to the City Manager in 1951, a position she held until retiring in March of 1972. During her career she worked with eight mayors and seven city managers. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and was a member of the choir. She was also a member of the Saturday Music Club, Marquette Community Concert Association and Business Professional Women's Club, and served as a volunteer for the American Heart Association.

Edith is survived by two daughters: Alice Darling Heyer of Fairfax, Virginia and Mary Darling Damas of San Diego, California; a grandson Scott Frederick Heyer and two great grandchildren, Brook Elizabeth Heyer and Blake Scott Heyer.

Services will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, July 7, 2001 in the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Lawrence Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Edith Darling Harper may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
