Richard Ken "Fat" Ninnis
ESCANABA - Richard Ken "Fat" Ninnis, former Ishpeming resident, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at the Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba where he has resided for the past 8 years.
Richard was born July 2, 1911 in Ishpeming to the late William and Linda (Brown) Ninnis. He worked 33 years as an underground miner for C.C.I. Mining Co. at Cliffs Shaft and Mather B. Mines, retiring in 1973. Richard was an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing cribbage. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Ishpeming.
Richard is survived by a daughter Beverly (Louis) Martin of Gladstone, a son Bernard (Anita) Mattila of Ishpeming, a sister Kathleen Moyle of Negaunee, 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sylvia in 1997, 3 brothers Henry Ostermeyer, William Ninnis and Clifford Ninnis, and 2 sisters Carol Dally and Fern Granlund.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at the United Presbyterian Church in Ishpeming. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Memorials can be directed to the United Presbyterian Church of Ishpeming or the Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba.
Arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Carl Lloyd Robbins
LITTLE LAKE -- Carl Lloyd Robbins, age 73, of 451 N. Farmers Lake Rd., passed away May 30, 2001, at Marquette General Hospital, following his third stroke.
He was born November 11, 1927, in Port Hope, New York; three sons, Jay of Tuscaloosa, Wisconsin; a sister, Mildred Eastlund of Savage, Michigan, and Howard of St. Lucie, Illinois for over 25 years moving back to Newberry in 1975. A devoted housewife and homemaker, Elizabeth enjoyed reading and casino gambling but more importantly she loved the time spent with her family and grandchildren. She also valued the simplicity and peacefulness of nature and she spent time gardening, growing flowers, watching wildlife and also the company of her three dogs.
Besides her parents, Elizabeth is preceded in death by her sister Helen Stewart and brother James Mattson. Survivors include her husband of over 52 years Joseph of Newberry; son Guy (Laura) of Woodridge, IL; daughters Lisa (Chris) Briggs of Newaygo and Cynthia (Edward) Schroeder of Marquette; six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 28, 2001 at 10:00 am at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Emma Dumas presiding. Interment will follow at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 27th from 5-8 pm.
Those who wish may contribute to the Luce County Chapter of the American Cancer Society in memory of Elizabeth I. Klinzing.

Rhea M. Tyll
HULBERT -- Rhea M. Tyll, 74, of Hulbert, died Friday evening June 22, 2001 at the Luce County Annex in Newberry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday June 27, 2001 at 10:00 am t St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Newberry with Fr. George Maki officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at Hulbert Township Cemetery. Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.
Angela "Angie" Carlson
LIMESTONE A memorial celebration in honor of the life of Angela Stella Maris "Angie" Carlson, will be held on Saturday, June 30, from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the home of Elmer Qualmann (next to Angie's former residence) N1994 Highway 67, Limestone. Angie, 83, of Limestone, entered eternal life December 17, 2000 in Munising. At her request, no formal services were scheduled, in favor of her desire for a time for friends and family to gather through the sharing of good food, fond remembrences, and laughter. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.
Bertha Caroline Parent
MARQUETTE -- Bertha Caroline Parent, 99, formerly of 1445 Birch Ave., died Monday, June 25, 2001 in the Norlite Nursing Center.
She was born March 15, 1902 in Kall, Sweden to Peter and Bertha (Nelson) Munter and had lived in this area since 1928. For many years Bertha worked as a house matron for the Lemon and Harlow Clark families in Marquette. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a nephew Ray Wright of Michigan and two nieces in Wisconsin, to William and Esther (Cronk) Stewart, he died June 26, 2001, in Ishpeming, Wisconsin, Sarah Rogers of Alpine, Wisconsin on Friday, July 6, followed by a memorial service at St. Alban's Church in Spooner at 5:00p.m. A burial service will be held at the Barnes, Michigan on May 8, 1905 to the late David and Eva (Syers) Ketchum. Bertha's mother died when she was eight years old and her grandparents, William and Louella Needham raised her. Bertha attended school in Van Meer and she had worked at the Old Munising Hospital. On June 10, 1922, she married Francis F. Morrison. She lived most of her life as a businesswoman in Seney. Bertha picked blueberries and ferns for a living and she owned and operated the Old Seney Hotel, the B & M Tavern in Germfask, and the Seney Party Store, which was also a restaurant and gas station before becoming The Party Store. Bertha had cooked in the logging camps and she was a midwife, delivering many babies in Seney and Germfask. Bertha was a member of the Grace Methodist Church in Germfask and had been a past member of the Eastern Star. She was the Seney Township Treasurer for a few years, and she also helped her husband do the tax rolls and keep the books for twenty-five years while Francis served as the Seney Township Clerk. She also worked as a volunteer at the Seney Wildlife Refuge. Bertha loved fishing and hunting. She stopped hunting at the age of 94 when she bagged her last buck. Her story was featured in the Detroit Free Press and the Grand Marais Pilot.
She is survived by her children- E. June Nettleton of Munising, Francis L. (William) Roberts of Munising, and David (Ruth) Morrison of Seney; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Francis, in 1967, a son Billy, an infant daughter, Beverly, two grandsons, William David Roberts and Timothy Allen Nettleton, a son-in-law, Donald A. Nettleton, a brother, Albert Ketchum, and her grandparents who raised her, William and Louella Needham who were Alger County's first automobile fatalities. They were killed on the Tannery Hill in 1926.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00. The funeral will be conducted at the Bowerman Funeral Chapel on Saturday, June 30, 2001 at 11:00 pm. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. She will be escorted by her grandsons, Mike, Tom, and Tony Nettleton, Ronald and Terry Roberts, and Don Reed.
Joseph H. Newman
PALMER -- Joseph H. Newman, Sr., age 84, of 402 Isabella Ave., Palmer died at 12:28 AM on Thursday, June 28, 2001, at his home.
Joe was born Dec. 25, 1916 in Palmer to Fredrick & Anna (Domagalski) Newman, attended the Kirkpatrick School, and was a lifelong resident. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He worked as an underground miner starting at the Volunteer Mine in 1936. He joined Cleveland Cliffs in 1946 at the Neaunee Mine and also worked at the Cambria, Mather A, Mather B, & Empire Mines. When laid off from CCI he worked for the Marquette County Road Commission and also for Gunlock Construction building the Empire Mine from ground level on up. He retired from the Empire Mine on his birthday in 1978 with 33 years of service.
Joe was an avid outdoorsman, hunter & fisherman. He loved to garden and gave most of his vegetables to his neighbors. Other hobbies included woodworking, cutting firewood, shoveling snow, riding his four- wheeler and watching high school & N.I.T. basketball. He and his wife both loved animals.
Surviving are his wife Elaine (Menapace) whom he married on Feb. 19, 1944, a son, Joseph H. (Shirley) Newman Jr., Palmer, a granddaughter, Amy (Robert) Luke, Marquette, a brother, Robert Neuman, Palmer, a sister, Alice Jacobson, Ishpeming, several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters; Elizabeth, Dorothy, Agnes, & Mary, 3 brothers; Clem, Fredrick, & George.
Funeral services will be held a 11:00 AM on Monday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. George R. Kaiser officiating. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens.
Friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 4-6 PM on Sunday.
Dorothy M. Pearson
ISHPEMING -- Dorothy M. Pearson, age 76, of 2000 Jackson Ave., Ishpeming, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Home after a courageous battle with cancer and in the care of her family.
Dorothy was born July 28, 1924 in Negaunee to the late Walter and Rose (Mager) Sandberg. She was a homemaker and a life long area resident.
Dorothy was a member of Church of Our Savior in Negaunee and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. She formerly played in the Negaunee Horseshoe League and the Ishpeming Bowling League and was an avid Bingo player.
Dorothy is survived by 3 children: Bonnie (Joseph) Sharland, Douglas (Susan) Pearson, and Steven (Marjorie) Pearson; a sister Gail Sipola and a brother Edward (Edith) Sandberg all of Ishpeming; 9 grandchildren: Kristin (Paul) Richards of Ishpeming, Brad Sharland of Montreal, WI, Heather Pearson of Warren, MI, Brant Pearson of Ishpeming, Amy (Jeff) Haney of Huber Heights, California; a grandson Scott Frederick Heyer and two great grandchildren, Brook Elizabeth Heyer and Blake Scott Heyer.
Services will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, July 7, 2001 in the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Lawrence Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Edith Darling Harper may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
