George Tibor
MARQUETTE -- George D. Tibor, 86, of 906 Adams Street, Marquette, died Friday morning at the Norlite Nursing Center.
Mr. Tibor was born March 2, 1915 in Houghton to the late George J. and Helen R. (Havican) Tibor. On January 5, 1952 he married the former Aileen K. O'Neil at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette and together they recently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Tibor retired on June 6, 1975 from the Soo Line Railroad as a machinist where he had worked for 42 years. He then worked with the Marquette Senior Center from July of 1975 through 1996. He also volunteered with the St. Vincent de Paul Society for over 40 years.
Georg was a life member of Monsignor McKevitt Council #689, Knights of Columbus, becoming a knight when he was 18 years old. He was a member of St. Peter Cathedral and spent many years devoting time in perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at Peter's.
He is survived by his wife, Aileen Tibor of Marquette; three children, Dan J. Tibor of Ypsilanti, MI, Cathy (Mike) Hoover of Milford, OH and Bill (Norma) Tibor of Harvey; also four grandchildren, Whitney Tibor, Anthony, Mary and Thomas Hoover. Preceding him in death besides his parents was an infant daughter, Mary; and siblings, Clayton B. Tibor, Katherine Dagnais, Aileen Johnson and Jack Tibor.
Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Sunday from 4 to 8pm where members of Monsignor McKevitt Council #689 Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 7pm and a parish prayer service will be conducted at 7:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10am in St. Peter Cathedral with the Rev. Lawrence Gauthier officiating. Interment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bill and Dan Tibor, Mike and Anthony Hoover, John True and Pat O'Donnell.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
Leila Lorraine Kutka
MARQUETTE -- Leila Lorraine Kutka, 72, formerly of 2212 Presque Isle Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday morning, June 30, 2001 at the Munising Memorial Hospital where she had been hospitalized one day. She had been a resident of the Tendercare Health Center in Munising for the past year and had been in ill health for several years.
Leila was born June 27, 1929 in Sturgeon Bay, WI, a daughter of Jacob and Josephine (Becker) Johnson and was raised in the Sturgeon Bay and Gill's Rock area. She was a graduate of the Sturgeon Bay High School. Leila spent most of her life in the Green Bay area and had moved to Marquette in September of 1998. A homemaker, she was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and had enjoyed traveling and vacationing in earlier years. A loving mother, proud grandparent, and sister, she is survived by: two daughters, Andrea Williams of Marquette and Lynne (Barry) Dale of Silicone Valley, CA; two sons, Randall Gerke of Antioch, CA and Kevin Gerke of DePere, WI; seven grandchildren, Rick Vale, Robert Vale, David Hodge, Jody Ann Peterson, Sharon Hauk-Femenia, Jay Gerke, and Michael Dale; her great grandchildren, Kayla, Jordon, Stephen, Alyssia, Sherry, Michael, and Angela and Peter; a sister Lorraine Anderson of Willie, TX; and her former husband, Andrew Gerke of DePere, WI.
In addition to her parents, Leila was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Kutka in 1998 and a brother-in-law, Leon Anderson.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 3, beginning at 10:00am. Funeral services follow in the funeral home at 11:00am Tuesday morning with Rev. Chrys Levesque, pastor of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, officiating.

Rease "Willy" Premeau
MARQUETTE, MI -- Rease "Willy" Premeau, 54, of 204 Riverside Road, Marquette, died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon in the Ishpeming area from a sudden heart attack, doing the work he loved to do.
Willy was born September 21, 1946 in Park Falls, Wisconsin to Charlotte (Campbell) Premeau and the late Clifford Premeau. In 1951 the Premeau family moved to Marquette where Willy chose to be a lifelong resident and make his home. He was in the last graduating class of Graveraet High School in 1964. On October 27, 1973, he married Robin (Robitaille) at the Missionary Church in Marquette.
Willy was employed as a foreman at the Premeau Construction Company along side his brother (Wayne) for the last 29 years. Under his rough exterior he was a gentle and caring man and will always be thought of as a mentor to those he worked with. He carried various certificates in Wastewater Management from the State of Michigan and the Hazwoper. He loved his job and all the projects he worked on, in and around the Marquette area. He also took great pride in his work. Willy would help anyone, anywhere, anytime. That was his nature.
Willy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 360 and a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. He enjoyed spending time with his children and family, fishing, swimming, tinkering with cars, gardening, and using his craftsmanship talents to work on his home. He also loved to take long walks on the beach and camp at Yellowdog Falls in Big Bay, where he could go to be with nature. Recently his hobby was astronomy, gazing at the moon and stars through his new telescope.
Surviving Mr. Primeau are his wife Robin; mother Charlotte Premeau; children- Michelle (Premeau) Hult of Marquette, Brenda (Paul) Reynolds of Ishpeming, John William and Shirley Margaret Premeau in Marquette; a brother, Wayne (Nancy) Premeau of Marquette; a sister, Peggy (Chip) Gobert of Marquette; three grandchildren- Tim and Tony Hult, Emilee Reynolds; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Clifford Primeau and eldest sister Elsie Mae Daish.
Friends may call upon the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Monday from 5:00pm until 8:00pm. A funeral service will be held Tuesday in the funeral home at 11:00am with Pastor Cindy Jean Saul officiating. Following will be a luncheon at the First Presbyterian Church, 120 N. Front St., Marquette. Interment will occur after the luncheon, approximately 2:30pm and to be held in Big Bay at the Powell Township Cemetery. Mr. Premeau will be escorted by John W. Premeau, Ashley Vallier, Ryan Dupras, Louie Cass, Pedro Flynn and Curt Tuttle.

Melissa Ann Kulju
REPUBLIC -- Melissa Ann Kulju, age 13, of P. O. Box 144 Republic, died Saturday evening June 30, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital as a result of injuries received in a automobile accident in Republic.
Melissa was born January 24, 1988 in Ishpeming and has lived in Republic all of her life. She would have been in the 8th grade, this fall.
Melissa was active in Junior High Basketball, Cheerleading, loved horses, swimming & camping. She also loved to babysit.
She is survived by her parents Curtis & Sherry (Sirtola) Kulju of Republic, 1 brother Jason Sirtola, 1 sister Michelle Kulju both of Republic, maternal grandmother Dianne Sirtola of Republic, paternal grandmother Irene Arpiainen of Republic, Maternal great grandmother Cecelia Shepherd of Republic, along with several aunts, uncles & cousins.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather Joel "Buddy" Sirtola.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday July 2, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home at 3 P. M. with Rev. Lance Roberts to officiate. Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 1 P. M. On Tuesday until the time of services. Burial will be in the Republic Cemetery.
Pat A. Robillard
L'ANSE -- Pat A. Robillard, age 61 of L'Anse, passed away at her home Saturday June 30, 2001 surrounded by her loving family after a courageous fight with leukemia. Pat was born in Black Duck, MN, December 31, 1939 to the late Harley and Stella (Hansen) Higgins. She graduated from high school in Minnesota and was a graduate of DelMar College in Corpus Christi, TX. On September 30, 1958, she married Gary Robillard in Aurora, MN. Pat lived in Texas until moving to L'Anse in 1985. She was employed at the Baraga County Memorial Hospital as a surgical technician until illness forced her retirement in 1999. Pat was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in L'Anse, the Teamsters Union, the Hosptial SIEU, and Michigan Tech "Huskie" Tae Kwon Do Club in Houghton.
Pat is survived by her loving husband Gary, sons John L. (Nancy) Robillard of Calumet and Curby Robillard of L'Anse and daughter Tracey (Kerry) Picciano of Baraga, 11 grandchildren and 3 great granchildren, brothes Floyd Higgens of Grand Rapids, MN, Harley (Coleen) Higgins, MA, and daughter-in-law Cheryl Laitila of Pelkie. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded by an infant son, step- mother Lamela Higgins, and father-in-law Lamar Robillard.
Funeral services for Mrs. Robillard will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday July 3, 2001 from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, with Father Greg Heikkila officiating. Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel on Monday July 2, and for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. A parish prayer service will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday in the chapel. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse.

Edith Louise Moore
ISHPEMING - Edith Louise Moore, age 63 of 831 S. Pine St., Ishpeming passed away on Sunday July 1, 2001 at her home in Ishpeming following a six week long illness.
Edith was born June 27, 1938 in Negaunee Twp. to Lila (Gregory) and the late Harry C. Green. She was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1956. She received her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse from Northern Michigan University. Edith was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and of TOPS, local #625.
Survivors include Anthony Moore whom she married on July 4, 1959 in Ishpeming; a daughter Michele (Ron) Meyers of Christmas; two sons Michael Moore and Daniel Moore both of Ishpeming; her mother Lila Green of Ishpeming; a sister A'Marylee (Terry) Thompson of Ishpeming a grandson Johnathon along with several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday July 7, 2001 at the Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Mair to officiate. Inurnment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 1:00PM until the time of services on Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Isabelle Christine McCann
MARQUETTE -- Isabelle Christine McCann, age 90, died peacefully, Sunday, July 1, 2001 at her Brookridge Heights home, in the loving care of family, friends, Brookridge staff and Hospice.
She was born May 22, 1911, in Toronto, Canada, to Arthur and Irene Breisch Jarred, who were American citizens. She returned to Michigan with her parents in 1920. She lived in the Lansing- East Lansing area until 1998 when she moved to Marquette. She and her husband spent summers at their Lake Superior cottage near Marquette from 1970 - 1997. Isabelle graduated from Lansing Central High School (1928) and attended Michigan State University.
Predeceased (1994) by her husband of 59 years, William McCann and her parents, three sisters and two brothers, she is survived by her daughter, Jane (Randy) Ryan, and two grandsons, Stuart Ryan and Grant Ryan, of Marquette, MI. She is also survived by a brother, David Jarred (Delphine) and one sister,
Patricia Williams, an aunt, Louise Breisch, three godchildren, Rachel Isabelle Butt, Margaret Burcham, Sarah McClellan Evers, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. McCann worked over 50 years as a Volunteer for the Junior Division of E.W. Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. She served as a volunteer for many years for the local chapter of the American Red Cross (blood bank), the Girl Scouts, the Ingham County Emergency Food Bank, and the Michigan State University Committee of Volunteers for International Programs. She was a member of the National Farm and Garden Federation and the Friends of the East Lansing Library. In Marquette, she was a member of the Marquette Beautification Committee.
Isabelle is remembered as a nurturing wife and mother and for her generosity to family and friends. She was a welcoming and enthusiastic hostess and cook, a gardner who loved to share plants and horticulture lore, a person who loved to connect to, know, and read about people of all cultures, ages, and backgrounds. She enjoyed linking her friends to one another.
In lieu of flower, friends may wish to donate to the American Red Cross, the Peter White Public Library, the Marquette Beautification Committee, or the Michigan State University Development Fund/Horticultural Gardens.
A memorial service for friends and family will be held at 3:30 pm on Monday, July 9, at the First Presbyterian Church of Marquette, followed by a gathering at UpFront and Co. from 4 to 6pm. Another memorial gathering will be held in East Lansing, Ml in the fall.

John LiPuma & Jane Marie LiPuma
BARAGA, MI -- A memorial service for John LiPuma, 53 and his wife Jane Marie, 43 will be held at 1pm July 7, 2001 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel in L'Anse. Mr. and Mrs. LiPuma were presumed drowned in a boating accident in Lake Superior on June 14, 2001.
John LiPuma was born January 13, 1948 in Sparta, WI, son of Salvatore and Hilda (Toms) LiPuma. He was a graduate of South Campus High School in Waukesha, WI, class of 1966. He later moved to Wahpeton, ND. John lived in LeSueur, MN for 13 years prior to moving to Baraga in 1999. On October 8, 2000 he married the former Jane Waltanen. He enjoyed reading, playing cards, swimming, hiking and many outdoor activities. He was an active member of Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall of Baraga. He owned the Cleaning Company in Baraga. Mr. LiPuma is survived by 3 daughters, Shannon Foss, Tiffany (Brent) Johnson and Beth (Kevin) Rogers; grandson Dalton Foss; and stepson Shawn Moody. He is also survived by his father Salvatore LiPuma; brother Sam LiPuma; sisters Beverly (Allen) Pooler and Anna (Loren) Voight. His mother Hilda and brother Duane LiPuma preceded him.
Jane Marie LiPuma was born in Hancock July 16, 1957, daughter of Henry and Ethel Waltanen. She graduated from Houghton High School in 1975. Jane was a self-employed massage therapist and enjoyed outdoor sports. She was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall of Baraga. She married John LiPuma on October 8, 2000. Mrs. LiPuma is survived by a son Shawn Moody and 2 grandchildren, Alexis and Tyler of Calumet, her mother Ethel Lohela of Chassell, 2 brothers, Allen Waltanen of Chassell and Melvin of Dodgeville, MI; sister Carol (Al) Tudor of Sturgeon Bay, WI; and many nieces and nephews. Her father Henry and brother Roy Waltanen preceded her.
Following the services for Mr. and Mrs. LiPuma, a remembrance and fellowship luncheon will be held in the Harrington Gathering Room loated at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, who assisted the family with memorial arrangements.
Leonard Gillespie
NORTHLAND, MI -- Leonard Gillespie, 72, of 57914 Co. Road 426 in Northland, MI. passed away Saturday at the V.A. Hospital in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was born May 14, 1929 in Escanaba and was the son of William and Nancy (Delph) Gillespie. He entered the U.S. Army in 1946. Following his serve in the U.S. Army he worked at the Niagara Paper Company in Niagara, WI. He married the former Geraldine Nault in 1946 and she preceded him in death in1951. In 1952 he re-enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served until his retirement in 1971. He served in WWII, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He married the former Judy Henry on Sept. 4, 1953. He is a member of the Norway Lake V.F.W. and the American Legion. Leonard Gillespie is survived by: wife Judy, four daughters, Sharyl Gillespie Nault DeVet of Iron Mountain, Lynn (Jim) Maul of Washington, Nancy Gillespie of California, Vicki (William) Struble of Battle Creek, MI.
Six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one brother, William Gillespie of Crystal Falls, MI., one sister, Marie (Charles) Gage of California, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and first wife he was preceded in death by one son, Glen Allen Gillespie, two sisters Clara Heller and Virginia Baravetto and three brothers, Vernon `'Bud" Gillespie, George Gillespie and David Gillespie.
Private family visitation will be held at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services for Leonard Gillespie will be held at 10:00 A.M. (E.S.T.) Wednesday July 4, 2001 at the Riverside Cemetery in Northland, MI., with Rev. Dale Ecklid officiating. Military rites wžll follow the funeral service and they will be conducted by the Norway Lake V.F.W. Burial will take place m the Riverside Cemetery in Northland. A lunch will he served at the Wells Township Hall following the funeral service. The Anderson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Marvin J. Makela
ISHPEMING -- Marvin J. Makela, age 53, of 990 Westwood Drive, Ishpeming, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2001 at his home.
Marvin was born August 3, 1947 in Ishpeming to the late Irving and Lorraine (Hooper) Makela. He was a life long area resident and worked for the C.C.I. Mining Company at the Empire and Tilden Mines.
Marvin is survived by a son, Jason Makela of Ishpeming, 2 sisters Linda (William) Koski of Ishpeming and Nancy (David) Jaykka of Ishpeming, and several nieces and nephews. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Barbie Makela and a brother Gerald Makela.
A memorial service will be held 1:00pm Thursday July 5, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. C. Bruce Ulstad officiating.

Raylene Kay Roth
L'ANSE -- Raylene Kay Roth, age 55, of L'Anse, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 5 at 11:00am at the Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor Judy Mattson will officiate. Burial will be in the Skanee Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
William LaVallie
MARQUETTE -- William LaVallie, 62, of 145 Lakewood Lane, Harvey, died peacefully at home Monday morning, July 2, 2001 with his family at this side after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. LaVallie was born on January 16, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. In 1956, he graduated from Holy Name High School in Escanaba and from Northland College of Ashland, Wisconsin in 1960 with a degree in business. On September 17, 1960, he married the former Carol J. Lancour at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Escanaba.
In 1968, Bill, Carol and their children moved to Marquette and opened up the Burger Chef restaurant along with his partner and brother-in-law, Harry Krebs. Together they formed K & L Enterprises, Inc. of which Bill served as president. As the business began to grow, they opened eight more restaurants across the Upper Peninsula, bringing Bill's brother, Terry, as their third partner. In 1983, the Hardee Corporation purchased the name of Burger Chef.
In 1985, the corporation opened up the first Subway restaurant in the U.P. They expanded that chain as well, adding their 13th Subway restaurant by 1998. K & L Enterprises at one time employed 500 people.
In 1990, K & L Enterprises received the Business of the Year Award from the Marquette Ambassadors. Bill and his partners always believed in giving back to the community, especially when it involved children.
Bill was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Marquette, the Marquette Noon Kiwanis Club, the Kiwanis High School Key Club and the Marquette Golf & Country Club. He previously served on the Board of Directors of the First of America Bank, the Shiras Institute Board, Bay Cliff Health Camp Board and Finance Committee and was also an active participant in the Jesus Video Project, the Catholic Keryx Retreat at Marquette Branch Prison as well as numerous other community activities.
Bill was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son and devoted friend and will be greatly missed by his wife, Carol; three children, Lisa (Brian) Cook of Glencoe, IL, Dean (Alisa Lane) LaVallie of Marquette and Ann (Christian) Reitter of Highlands Ranch, CO; two grandchildren, Ethan LaVallie and Wilson Cook; his mother, Evelyn LaVallie of Escanaba; two sisters, Sandy (Harry) Krebs and Bonnie Jacques, both of Escanaba; two brothers, Terry (Jeanine) LaVallie of Iron Mountain and Dan (Ginny) LaVallie of Roselle, IL; also surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, William J. LaVallie, Sr. on February 16, 1996, and a nephew, Paul Jacques.
Bill didn't have hobbies. His passion for camp and the Bolivia Project, many sports, his great sense of humor, his love for people, is what made him unique. He touched and enriched many lives in his daily encounters, radiating a sense of brotherhood and happiness to everyone. He was a father figure to many.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 4 to 8pm EDT at St. Michael Catholic Church where a parish prayer service will be recited at 8:00pm. Visitation will also be held on Friday beginning at 9:30am EDT until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial scheduled for 11:30am at St. Michael's with the Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick, and the Rev. Msgr. Timothy Desrochers concelebrating. Interment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
Mr. LaVallie's escorts will be Chris, Dan, Brad, Chad and Ryan LaVallie, John and Mark Jacques, John Beck and Rick Holmes.
