James F. Schuler
SAND RIVER, MICHIGAN -- James F. Schuler, 89, of Sand River, died Saturday afternoon, July 7, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Schuler was born on April 29, 1912 in Mohawk, Michigan to the late James and Blanche (Sleeman) Schuler. On August 22, 1969, he married the former Alma Conry in Highland Park, Michigan.
Jim belonged to the Local #58 Electrician Union in Detroit for over 60 years. He worked as a game warden for a short time in his younger years. After retirement, Jim and his wife, Alma, moved to this area in the early 70's and also wintered in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for 10 years.
Jim loved baseball and was both a player and a fan. At one time, he signed a contract to participate in spring training with the Boston Red Sox. He also loved hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Alma, of Sand River; two children, Craig Schuler of Oak Park, MI and Linda (Barry) Melnick of Dearborn Heights, MI; one step-son, Jack Curtis of Cleveland, OH; four grandchildren, Jon, Richard, Brett and Nicole; nine great grandchildren; also surviving is a sister, Grace living downstate.
Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ross Nicholson of First United Methodist Church officiating.
Mr. Schuler's honorary escorts will be Dick Hinds, Jumbo DesArmo and Emerson Carey.
Jim's family would like to thank Dick, Jumbo and Emerson, their families and all other friends who have been a source of support and comfort to Jim and Alma over the past several years.

Louise R. Cornish
ISHPEMING -- Louise R. Cornish, age 74 of 430 Oak St., Ishpeming passed away Saturday, July 7, 2001 at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Louise was born July 10, 1926 in Stevens Point, WI to the late John & Rose (Pawlbrac) Pelowski. She has resided in Ishpeming for the past 38 years. Louise enjoyed knitting and was a avid seamstress.
Louise is survived by her husband of 38 years, Thomas W. Cornish of lshpeming 2 sons: John J. Falk of Marquette and Jerome M. (Becky) Falk of Wesley Chapel, FL, a brother Ernest Pelowski of Stevens Point and a sister Dolores Pietroska of Stevens Point, a grandson Thomas Falk of Oshkosh, WI, and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Msgr. Peter Oberto officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Priscilla "Pat" Mathews
MARQUETTE -- Priscilla "Pat" Mathews, 73, of 330 Whetstone Village, Marquette, died early Sunday morning, July 8,2001 at Marquette General Hospital.
Mrs. Mathews was born February 16, 1928 in Marquette to the late Alcid and Evelyn (Genord) LaMoria. She previously worked as a telephone operator for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company, as a clerk at the former Montgomery Wards store in Marquette and as a receptionist for Daine Bosworth in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pat was involved in founding Mathew's Linoleum and Tile in Marquette in 1966, now known as Mathew's Floor Fashions.
She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette and a former member of the Daughters of Isabella. She served as a board member for the Michigan Association for Retarded Children, was a Girl Scout Troup leader and was an exhibitor at Art on the Rocks and elsewhere during the 1960's.
Pat loved to travel and enjoyed being in the outdoors including family camping trips. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother with family always coming first in her life.
Survivors include six children, Connie (Ron) Ducommun of Brooklyn Park, MN, Michelle Willick and Therese "Terry" (Don) Johnson, both of Marquette, Alan (Ann) Mathews of Pinckney, MI, John (Lisa) Mathews of Rockford, MN and Steve Mathews of Marquette; nine grandchildren, Shawn (Dee) Johnson, Sarah Mathews, Jessie Mathews, Matt Ducommun, Jennifer Mathews, Anna Mathews, Dick Ducommun, Margaret Mathews and David Mathews; also one great granddaughter, Caitlin Johnson. Preceding her in death besides her parents was a brother, Alcid "Bud" LaMoria.
Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Bishop's Room of St. Peter Cathedral. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7 p.m. in the cathedral with the Rev. Thomas Ettolil officiating. Interment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Pat's grandchildren will serve as her escorts.

Russ Bradford Lutey
MARQUETTE -- Russ Bradford Lutey, 38, of 680 Cherry Creek Rd., Harvey, died Friday evening, July 6, 2001 near Little Lake when the motorcycle he was riding struck a deer. His wife Gina, 36, was treated for injuries and released from Marquette General Hospital on Sunday. He died instantly doing what he loved to do.
Russ was born August 5, 1962 at St. Luke's Hospital in Marquette. He attended John D. Pierce, Parkview and Silver Creek Schools and was a 1980 graduate of Marquette Senior High School. He married Gina Carlson of Munising on August 26,1995, and they had one daughter Morgan, whom he dearly loved.
Russ was in the automobile business in Boulder, Colorado before moving back to Marquette in 1991. He was assistant manager of Choice Motors, Dodge, Jeep Automobile Dealership of Marquette for six years, and was currently co-owner of Lutey's Heritage Motors and Indian Motorcycle of Marquette.
Russ is survived by his wife Gina, 3 1/2 year old daughter Morgan Marie,18 year old step-son Richard Prunick, two brothers, Phil (Paula) and Tim (Becky) a sister Christine, parents Dick Lutey and Gretchen Long, and step parents Nancy Lutey and Richard Long, all of Marquette. He is also survived by step-siblings Katie (Barrett) Ludlow of Newberry, Pam (Joe) McGraw of Traverse City, Wally (Carrie) Pearson of Marquette, and Cyndee (Tim) Hein of Camas, Washington, along with eight nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 10, 2001 from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home, with a service at 7:30 PM officiated by the Reverend Charles Tooman. There will be a Celebration of Russ's Life on Friday, July 13, 2001 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the home of Phil Lutey,155 Green Garden Rd., Harvey. All family and friends are invited.

Albert Brunk
BARAGA -- Albert Brunk, 69, of Baraga, passed away at his home Sunday July 8, 2001 surrounded by his loving family following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born June 1, 1932 in Watermeet, MI a son of the late Frank D. and Martha (Polar) Brunk. Albert attended school in Watersmeet and Marquette and had been a resident of Baraga for over 35 years moving here from Watersmeet. On January 16, 1954 he married the former Elizabeth, Kenosha, Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Army and was a proud service veteran. Until his retirement in 1997, Albert was employed by the Pettibone Corporation as a line assemblyman. His love of sports knew no bounds. He was active in bowling, basketball, pool, golf, baseball and softball serving as a team member, manager, coach and umpire. Mr. Brunk was a member of Most Holy Name of Jesus Church in Assinins, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, Ojibwa Senior Citizens, V.F.W. L'Anse post 3897, where he had been an active member until his illness.
Albert is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth, 4 sons; Albert (Ann) of Baraga, Robert and his special friend Vanessa of Watersmeet, David (Linda) of Mole Lake, WI and Ronald (Diane) of Baraga, 4 daughters; Sharon Brunk of Watersmeet, Brenda and her special friend David Robinson of Baraga, Nancy (David) Pawlowski and Sally Brunk all of Baraga, 14 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, a brother James Brunk of Lansing, MI, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also surivive. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, 2 sisters, 4 nephews and 1 niece.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday July 12, 2001 from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with James Williams officiating. Interment will take place in the Baraga Cemetery. His casket escorts will be Arne and Daryl Putala, William Brunk, John Johnson and Mike Hazen St., and Mike Hazen Jr. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evenings from 6 until 9 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel and 1 hour prior to the services on Thursday. Baraga County area veterans under the direction of the L'Anse V.F.W. will accord military honors at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel, followed by traditional ceremonies. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse who assisted the family with service arrangements.

Clayton W. Kumpu
CHAMPION -- Clayton W. Kumpu, age 60, of Champion passed away on Monday July 9, 2001 at the Marquette General Hospital.
Clayton was born on July 17, 1940 in Negaunee to Dorothy (Mackey) and the late William Kumpu. He was raised and attended grade school in this area, he moved to Chicago where he graduated from Foreman High School, and went on to attend Wright College in Chicago. Clayton had lived back in this area for the past 30 years.
Survivors include his mother Dorothy (Fred) Brawley of Humboldt, 2 brothers - James Kumpu of Wheeling IL and Thomas (Cynthia) Kumpu of Crystal Lake, IL.
Private funeral services will be held at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Ilmar "Elmer" Holma
WATTON -- Ilmar "Elmer" Holma, 86, of Watton, passed away at Baraga County Memorial Hospital Tuesday, July 10, 2001. He was born March 10, 1915 in Watton, MI., son of the late John and Wilhelmina Holma. Ilmar attended the Opal School in Watton and was a lifetime area resident. In 1942 he a married the fomer Helen Heikkinen in Detroit, Mr. Holma was employed by Cleveland Cliffs Industries as a driller helper until his retirement in 1979. He also had worked for various area road-building companies prior to working for CCI.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed carpentry, having built his own home.
Mr. Holma is survived by 2 sons, Douglas (Carol) Holma and Marvin (Linda) Holma of Watton, daughter, Nancy Holma of Watton, 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, sisters, Ann Post of Jackson, MI., Theresa Needham of California, several nieces and nephews also survive. Elmer is also survived by special friend Elsie Nevala. 2 brothers and 3 sisters preceded him.
Funeral services for Mr. Holma will be held at 1 p.m Friday July 13, 2001 from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel L'Anse with Pastor Margaret Grant officiating. Interment will take place in the Covington Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 11 a.m. until time of the service. Following the service there will be a fellowship luncheon in the Harrington Gathering Room located at Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, who assisted the family with arrangements.
Maude M. Olsen
MARQUETTE -- Maude M. Olsen, 85, formerly of 1105 Norway Ave., died Monday, July 9, 2001 in the Eastwood Nursing Center where she had resided since March.
She was born June 3, 1916 in Sands, Michigan to Rasmus and Anne (Miller) Olsen and had lived in this area all her life. Prior to her retirement Maude worked for several area businesses, including Flink's Store for 14 years, the Miracle Market and the Villa Capri . In addition she served as the Sands Township Treasurer and Assistant Postmaster. She was a member of the Marquette Gospel Tabernacle.
Maude is survived by four sisters; Minnie Johnson of of Lansing, Clara Bergdahl of Skandia, Natalie Henderson of Sands and Gertrude Flink of Marquette and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Ruby Shaw and a brother Ross Olsen.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Friday, July 13, 2001 in the Marquette Gospel Tabernacle with Reverend Gordon Wells officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church beginning at 4:00 PM on Friday. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Werner W. Koukkari
ISHPEMING-- Werner W. Koukkari, age 90, of 680 Greenwood St. Ishpeming passed away, Monday, July 9, 2001 at his home under the care of UP Home Health & Hospice.
Werner was born June 16, 1911 in Ishpeming to the late John & Louise (Karvalla) Koukkari. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for the CCI Mining Company as an underground miner at the Humboldt, Cliffs Shaft, Mather A & B Mines, retiring in 1975. Werner enjoyed woodcarving and cabinet making. He was a member of the carpenters union.
Werner is survived by his caregiver & niece in law Shirley Kallatsa of Ishpeming and many other nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen in 1994, 3 sisters Elina Backa, Senja Lahti and Ruth Gallagher, & 3 brothers Walfred, Victor & Eino Koukkari.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00p.m. Thursday, July 12, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Olson and Rev. C. Bruce Ulstad officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

FENTON -- Mark A. Ellard of Fenton, Michigan, age 39, died Monday, May 28, 2001 at his brother's residence.
Surviving are wife, April (Fita); 2 children, Tabatha Meade of Byron and Christopher Ellard at home; parents Lois and Rudy Garcia of Byron; 3 brothers, Dan and wife Cynthia of Davison, Andy and wife Pamela of Flushing, Nathan and wife Mary Kay of Owosso; sister Shannon and husband Mark Atkins of Florida; several nieces and nephews; grandmother, Doris and husband Rex Pearson of Gwinn; many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ted Valeski.
Shirley Mae Flanigan
WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- Shirley Mae Flanigan, 76 of West Palm Beach, Florida, formerly of Marquette, MI passed away on July 3, 2001 after a long illness. She died in the home of her daughter, Kathleen Son, with whom she resided for the past year and a half. She and her husband William Flanigan, whom she married in 1946, had lived in Marquette, MI where they raised their six children until moving to the Palm Beaches in 1972. Shirley was the daughter of Ruth and Floyd Thomas.
Shirley was born on October 13, 1924 in Marquette, MI where she graduated from high school. She then attended NMU in hopes of becoming a gymnastics teacher, but instead became a devoted wife and mother. She was an expert bowler, playing on several ladies' organization leagues while raising her family. She was also the Scrabble champion in he family and excellent in games of all kinds.
Shirley is survived by two sons and four daughters; William (Melanie) Flanigan and Daniel Flanigan, both of Marquette; Kathleen J. Son of West Palm Beach, FL; Barbra C. (Michael) Kennedy of Jupiter, FL; Maureen M. (Mike) Maki of Lake Worth, FL; and Molly (Mike) Patterson of West Hartford, CT. She is also survived by grandchildren, Peter Staniec and Kelsey Flanigan of West Palm Beach, FL; William Flanigan III of Marquette, MI; Mark Mason of Lake Worth, FL; Tara Coron of Shelby, MI; Molly Maki of Lake Worth, FL; Conor Flanigan, Ft. Meyers, FL; Kaitlyn Kennedy and Michael Kennedy of Jupiter, FL; Delaney Patterson, Liam Patterson and Bridget Patterson of West Hartford, CT and Hunter Flanigan of Marquette, MI.
Also survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Pug Thomas of Benson, AZ; Floyd and Yolanda Thomas of San Diego, CA; Daniel and Nancy Thomas of St. Charles, IL; sister Barbara Mullen of Albany, CA and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents were her husband William Flanigan in 1993 and her sister Jean Peters in 1997.
A memorial service will be held in Marquette, MI in July of 2002. the family has requested that in lieu of flowers and in appreciation of the compassionate and loving care given to Shirley in the final stages of her illness that any donations be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407.
Amelia Hall
SHELTER BAY -- Amelia Hall, 77, of Shelter Bay, entered eternal life Thursday morning, July 12, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where she had been hospitalized for the past nine days. She had been in ill health for the past year.
Amelia was born January 28, 1924 in Detroit, a daughter of the late Michael and Emilia (Stieber) Dallos and was raised in Detroit. She had been a Shelter Bay area resident for the past two years, previously residing in Garden City. She was a homemaker. Survivors include: her husband of 58 years, William R. Hall, Sr., whom she married on April 30, 1943; a daughter, Karen (Jack) Hudson of Deerton; a son, William R. (Lisa) Hall, Jr., of Dearborn; her grandchildren, Ross (Charlotte) Porter and James Line; great grandchildren, Richie, Seth, and Ross; a sister, Janet (Bob) Sikora of Northville; three brothers, Michael (Jean) Dallos of Wyandotte, Robert (Doris) Dallos of Westland, and John (Chris) Dallos of Dearborn; a sister-in-law, Connie Hall of St. Helen; brother-in-law, Bob Pershing of Southgate; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Amelia was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Porter; grandson, DWayne Line; and a sister, Julie Pershing.

Arne W. Hill
NEGAUNEE -- Arne W. Hill, age 75, of 1012 Pine St. Negaunee died at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for one month.
Arne was born Aug. 6, 1925 in Negaunee to John & Kaarina (Angman) Hill, was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1943 and was a lifelong resident. He was a WWII veteran having served as a U.S. Marine in the South Pacific. He worked for CCI at various company properties including the Maas Mine, the Humbolt Mine, the Mather B Mine and was the first control room operator at the Tilden Mine.
Mr. Hill was a life member of the V.A. Romo Post V.F.W. #3165, Negaunee. He loved to hunt and fish in his earlier years. He always had time for and loved to be with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, whom he married on July 13, 1946, Audrey (Koskinen), 3 sons; Richard Hill, Coos Bay, OR, John (Suk Hui) Hill, Las Vegas, NV, Alan (Christine) Hill, Green Bay, WI, 3 daughters; Karen (Stephen) Richardson, Eden Prairie, MN, JoAnn Hill, Green Bay, WI, Peggy (Keith) Schultz, Aurora, CO, 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 1 sister, Aileen (Earl) Borlace, Holland, MI, 1 brother, Reino (Sybil) Hill, Vancouver, WA, several nieces & nephews, He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee with Rev. David L. Echelbarger officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
Friends may call at Immanuel Lutheran Church from 11:00 AM until the time of services at 1:00 PM on Monday. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Arne's memory.
