Earl Anderson
LITTLE LAKE -- Earl Anderson, 78, of Little Lake, where he had been a life long resident, went to his heavenly home Wednesday, July 11, 2001.
Earl was born June 1, 1923 in Gwinn, MI and was a member of the Community Covenant Church of Carlshend- where he was active in the choir and also sang solos. He was an avid sportsman and a real outdoors man, enjoying fishing, hunting and trapping. Prior to retiring he worked in the mines and also worked for the Gwinn Area Community Schools where he was a bus driver and custodian. In 1953, he worked with the construction of the McDonald Elementary School and worked there until his retirement in 1984.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Dorothy Bruce; two daughters, Dianne (David) Lehtinen of Gladstone and Debra (Brian) Weatherdon of Marquette; two sons, Dennis (Patricia) Anderson of Menominee and Darwin (Ubalee) Anderson of Alexandria, LA; 18 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, July 14, 2001 in the Community Covenant Church of Carlshend with Reverend Lowell Fox officiating. Burial will be in the Skandia Lutheran Cemetery, with Russell Westman, Dan Johnson, Brian Weatherdon, David Lehtinen, Mark Anderson and Al Pierce acting as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be John Maki and Richard Renfors. Visitation wil be from 4 to 8pm this evening at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home.
Elizabeth "Sis" Bell
MARQUETTE -- Elizabeth "Sis" Bell, 95, of Marquette, died Wednesday evening at Norlite Nursing Center.
Mrs. Bell was born February 28, 1906 in Marquette, a daughter of the late William and Anna Marie (Otten) Artz. She was a graduate of the Bishop Baraga High School and the former Northern Normal School. Elizabeth married Robert R. Bell in South Bend, Indiana and he preceded her in death in 1961.
Mrs. Bell was employed for several years as a resident supervisor with the Wallace Nurses Residence. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, the altar society and volunteered her time with the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Surviving Mrs. Bell are two children, Betty FitzHenry of South Bend, IN and Robert (Marlene) Bell of Gwinn; grandchildren, Rosemary Zirille, Anne FitzHenry, Elizabeth Walker, Patrick (Karen) FitzHenry, Cynthia (Michael) Menucci, Rob (Amber) Bell, Kathleen (Loren) Drake and Michael W. Bell; and eleven great-grandchildren. Three sisters, Gertrude Toupin, Margaret Cain and Lydia Dighera and a brother, Alfred Artz preceded her in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday in St. Michael Catholic Church at 12:30 p.m. with Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick officiating. Visitation will be held in the parish center at the church from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the mass. Interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Mrs. Bell's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul at 2118 Fitch, Marquette, MI 49855. The Canale-Tonella Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Kenneth F. Sager
GWINN -- Kenneth F. Sager, 78, of 334 S. Shag Lake Drive, Gwinn died at 11:50 AM on Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had been a patient since April 10, 2001.
Mr. Sager was born Oct. 16, 1922 in Chicago, IL to Fredrick & Hulda (Beattie) Sager and was a graduate of Dollar Bay High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII having served with teh 417th Infantry. He served under General Patton in Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned the Bronze Star and 3 Bronze Battle Stars. Following his service to his country he attended Beloit College and Suomi College. He moved to Negaunee in 1956 and worked as the Budget Director at K.I. Sawyer A.F.B. for 29 years, retiring in 1982. While working at K.I. Sawyer he took classes at N.M.U. & M.T.U. He moved to Big Shag Lake in Gwinn in 1982 and spent winters in the Mesa, AZ area.
Mr. Sager was a member of the Negaunee Elks Lodge and was a former Elk of the Year, was a member of the Mesa, AZ Moose Lodge, the Dollar Bay V.F.W., the Little Lake American Legion Post, and the Marquette D.A.V. Post. His hobbies included bowling, fishing, and playing cribbage.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia "Pat" (Kus), 2 sons; Ronald (Joanne) Sager, Flushing, MI, Leland (Judy) Sager, Ishpeming, 2 daughters; Lynne (Thomas) Forre, Lakewood, CO, Peggy Sager, Acworth, GA, 5 grandchildren; Brandon (Kelly) Sager, Barrie Sager, Benjamin (Tori) Sager, Jason Sager, & Bethany (Raymond) Barber, 6 great grandchildren, 1 sister, Leona (George) Orlowski, Chicago, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, June Stone.
Private memorial services where held on Friday at the Koskey Funeral Home. Rev. Scott Harmon, pastor of Mitchell United Methodist Church officiated.
Memorials may be directed to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activitiy Fund in Mr. Sager's memory.
Lawrence Vane (Butch) Buckmaster
APACHE JUNCTION, Arizona -- Lawrence Vance (Butch) Buckmaster, 56, of Apache Junction, Arizona, died March 15th. He is survived by his wife Faye, sons Larry and Bruce, three step-children, 16 grandchildren, his mother, Norma, brothers Lloyd (Sue), Louis Stan (Mary), John, sister-in-law Pattie, sisters Alice, Kitty Williams, Sandy (Karl) Stenglein, uncle Louis (Connie) Beaudry, aunt Frankie Franchuck, brother-in-law Jack (Kay) Tauch, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Lloyd, brother Richard (Dick), and sisters Holly Beaudry and Lola Tauch.
Memorial services were held in Mesa, Arizona and in Marquette.
Thomas (Tim) Lynaugh, Jr.
ESCANABA -- Thomas (Tim) Lynaugh, Jr. 67 of 510 1st Ave. S. Escanaba, died at the home of his daughter on Thursday, July 12, 2001. Tim was born March 21, 1934 in Gladstone, the son of Thomas P. and Lucille (Dupere) Lynaugh Sr. and was a life long resident of this area. He was married to the former Jackie Buckland November 28, 1953 and she survives. Time worked for DeCock Bottle Gas Co. for 20 years and for Holy Cross Cemetery for 15 years. He was an avid Green Bay Packer Fan and enjoyed fishing and golf.
He leaves to survive: wife, Jackie; Step Mother, Marie Lynaugh of Escanaba; 2 sons Kevin Lynaugh of Escanaba and Gary (Barbara) Lynaugh of Marquette; 1 daughter Tami Lynaugh-Kenny of Escanaba; 2 brothers John (Pat) Lynaugh of Escanaba and George "Mike" (Sue) Lynaugh of Menasha, WI; 2 sisters Margaret (Oliver) Mayham of Loveland, CO and Theresa Ferrier of Gladstone; 7 grandchildren Julie Graves and Sheri Kazmurczak of Columbus, OH, Jesse Lynaugh of Marquette, Carrie Lynaugh, Mandi Lynaugh, Matt Lynaugh and Sean Kenny of Escanaba; 1 great grandson Daniel Graves of Columbus, OH.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister, Jackie King. Friends may call at the Skradski- Boyce Funeral Home in Escanaba on Monday, July 16, 2001 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Private funeral services for Tim Lynaugh will be held at a latter time. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Beatrice M. Cardew
ISHPEMING -- Beatrice M. Cardew, age 84 of 213 S. Second St. Apt. #4 passed away on Friday, July 13, 2001 at her home in Ishpeming.
Beatrice was born January 8, 1917 in National Mine, MI to the late John and Sarah (Gill) Cardew. Beatrice served in the United States Air Force (WAC) during World War II. She worked in the banking industry as a teller in California for many years then retired to Scottsbluff, NE where she resided until moving to Ishpeming in 1999. Beatrice attended Faith Lutheran Church.
She is survived by three sisters- Betty Denney of Ishpeming, Eliza Goudge of Florida, and Olive Solomon of Ishpeming; a brother Louis Cardew of Florida; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 4 brothers- Lloyd, Leslie, Roy and George Cardew and a sister Leona Shepard.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Brian Keith Certo
SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- Brian Keith Certo, age 33 of Salt Lake City, former Ishpeming resident, passed away suddenly at his home on July 6, 2001.
Brian was born April 26, 1968 in Ishpeming to Clyde & Susan (Salo) Certo. Brian married Stacey McMahan in October 1991. Of all of the accomplishments in Brian's life, the one he was most proud of was his son Gavin, who he loved very much. He would play and wrestle with him all the time. Brian loved fishing for "muskies" in Lake Angeline, and deer hunting. He was a good craftsman working and building many things out of wood with his hands.
Brian is survived by his wife of 10 years, Stacey; a son Gavin of Salt Lake City, his parents Clyde & Susan Certo, a brother Duane Certo, a sister Linda (Vito) Carello, all of Ishpeming, paternal grandmother Inona Certo of Negaunee, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and a sister in law Julie McMahan of Salt Lake City. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Marie & Walter Salo and his paternal grandfather Joseph Certo.
Memorial services will be held 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming with the Rev. Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating. Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service.

ISHPEMING -- Gertrude Patron, age 88 of 757 Wabash St. Ishpeming died Friday, July 13, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming where she had been a patient for the past 2 weeks.
Gertrude was born February 26, 1913 in Ishpeming to the late jmaes & Bessie (Knight) Dowrick. She was a life long area resident. She attended the Wesley United Methodist Church.
She is survived by 8 Grandchildren Janiece, Jeannie, Joseph & Jeffrey LaLond all in New York, Mark LaFave of California, Mary Bishop of Ishpeming, Peter LaLond of Ishpeming, & Greg LaLond of Wyoming. 3 nieces, Mona Koski & Karen Kellstrom both in California, & Carol Harsila of Ill. Daughter-in-law Marie LaLond of Ishpeming, Special Friend Jeanette Carlson of Ishpeming.
She was preceded in death by her husband John Patron, 3 sons twins James & David LaLond & Larry LaFave. 2 Sisters Kathryn Cowling & Ruby St. Andre, 1 Brother James Dowrick and a Grandson James LaLond.
A Memorial service will be held at the Wesley United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 4, 2001 at 11 AM with the Rev. Paul Olson to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Helen Pearl Morrison
MARQUETTE -- Helen Pearl Morrison, 80, of 528 E. Michigan St., died Thursday, July 12, 2001 shortly after admission to Marquette General Hospital.
She was born February 19, 1921 in Moran, MI to Robert and Mary (Hollinshead) Kubond and came to Marquette in 1934. She was a graduate of Bishop Baraga Business School. In 1944 she joined the Navy WAVES and completed her "boot training" at Hunter College in the Bronx, New York. She also completed a yeoman school at Oklahoma A & M, Stillwater, Oklahoma, and was then assigned to the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Washington, D.C. After her discharge in 1948, Helen returned to Marquette where she had various jobs before becoming owner and operator of The Smartwear in 1963, a position she held until retiring in 1981. She was a stand in during the filming of Anatomy of a Murder in Marquette. A loving mother and wife, Helen was a bright and decisive woman who served as a wonderful role model for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She attended the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include three daughters; Mary (Marty) Morrison-Martello of Marquette, Patricia (George) Lefevre of Tampa, FL and Elizabeth (William) Grill of Negaunee; two sons, Brad and Charles of Marquette, two sisters, Grace Gamache of Saginaw, MI and Barbara (Frances) DePetro of Marquette; two brothers, Robert Kubond of Arcadia, FL and Thomas Kubond of Niles, MI, 11 grandchildren; Melissa, Dale, Heather, George, Patrick, Chad, Chris, Emily, Gemma, Billy & Andrea, and six great grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob, Isabella, Demi, Caterina and Hunter. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard (July 20, 2000) and a sister Madeline Maxwell.

John E. Tollefson
L'ANSE, MI -- John E. Tollefson, 65, well known L'Anse businessman, died suddenly at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, Thursday, July 12, 2001. He was born September 29, 1935 in L'Anse son of John N. and Verna (Kinnunen) Tollefson. John attended the L'Anse area schools and graduated in 1954. He was a lifetime area resident. On February 22, 1958, he married the former Florence Polo in Ontonagon. John was employed by the L'Anse Sentinel until 1959 when he went to work for the Tollefson Insurance Agency. He purchased the business in 1978. He remained active until he was forced to limit his involvement due to illness. In his leisure time, John enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cribbage. He was a proud grandfather and always enjoyed their company.
John was a member of the United Lutheran Church, the L'Anse American Legion Post 144, the Keweenaw Bay Shriners Club, and the L'Anse Eagles Aerie 2287. He served in the U.S. Army for 4 years and also was a member of the Michigan National Guard. Mr. Tollefson is survived by his loving wife, Florence; son Edward (Alyna) Tollefson of L'Anse; 3 daughers, Cathy (Rodger) Hebert of Baraga, Vicki (Steve) Solberg of L'Anse and Sandy Tollefson also of L'Anse; 9 grandchildren, Jeremy, John, Jay, Chad, Danielle, Jesse, Crystal, Darin, Dustin; and great grandchild Carter. He is also survived by his mother, Verna Tollefson of L'Anse; 2 sisters, Marlene (Ed) Damgaard of L'Anse, Ann (Phil) Endres, brother-in-law, Danny Polo, father-in-law, Ed Polo. In addition, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his father, John N., brother-in-law Donald Magnant, and mother-in-law Hilda Polo.
Funeral services for Mr. Tollefson will be held Monday July 16 at 11am from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse. Rev. Margaret Grant will officiate and intermenty will take place in L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. His grandchildren will honor him as casket bearers. The family will receive friends Sunday July 15 from 6 until 9pm at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel. Baraga County Veterans will conduct military rites at 7:00pm Sunday followed by a Keweenaw Bay Shriners Club service at 7:30pm. The L'Anse Eagles Aerie Lodge will follow with a memorial service at 8pm. Arrangements were under the direction of Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse.
N. Jane Gallagher (Jarvi-Jarvis)
GREEN BAY, WI - N. Jane Gallagher, 56, Green Bay, Wis., passed away on Friday, July 13, 2001, with her family at her side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jane will be missed by her family. Jane was born in Ishpeming, Mich. on February 13, 1945, to Norma Jarvis and the late Paul Jarvis. On February 13, 1965, Jane married Michael J. Gallagher. They had three children and six grandchildren that she loved dearly.
Jane was the Business Administrator at St. John the Baptist Parish in Howard, from which she recently retired in March. This was a job that Jane enjoyed and devoted a great deal of passion to. One of Jane's favorite hobbies was baking; anything from homemade doughnuts that her Aunt Allo taught her at a young age to Chocolate Strata Pie that was famous at the House of Ludington in Escanaba, Mich.
Jane enjoyed traveling with her family, from visits to California to see her brother, to Disney World with her grandchildren. One of her favorite trips was when her family went to Jay, Maine to see her son, Tim get married last summer. She had a hotel right on the lake so she could look upon the water every morning as she woke up. Jane always said she loved moving to Green Bay, but missed living on the water where she grew up in Gladstone, Mich. Jane was a current member of the Business Administration of Green Bay Diocese, a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters, Court 186, Gladstone, Mich.
Survivors include her husband, Michael J. Gallagher; children, Jennifer Pepin (Kelly), Green Bay, WI, Timothy Gallagher (Tara), Jay, Maine, Michelle Gallagher, Green Bay, WI; sisters and brothers, Virginia Jarvis, Gladstone, MI, Peter Jarvis, Orange, CA, Bette DeMars (Michael), Escanaba, Paul Jarvis, Rapid River, MI, Jean Belanger (John), Gladstone; mother Norma Jarvis, Gladstone, MI; mother-in-law, Blanche Gydesen, Brooksville, FL; sister-in-law, Patricia Gravelle, Brooksville, FL; grandchildren, Gabrielle and Colin Pepin, Robyn, Alexii, Kaitlyn and Kelyse Smith (Gallagher); 16 nieces and nephews; six great nieces and nephews, special friend of the family, Penny Gregorie.
She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Jarvis; brother, William Jarvis; cousin, Dale Hollingsworth; uncle Leonard Hollingsworth; nephew, Joseph Belanger; father-in-law, James Gallagher; brother-in-law, James Gravelle; stepfather-in-law, Vaughn Gydesen.
Friends may call at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church 2597 Glendale Ave., Howard, from 1 to 5pm Monday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 5pm Monday at the church with the Rev. William Swichtenberg officiating. Blaney Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Thomas E. Vichich
CALUMET -- Thomas E. Vichich, 83, of Calumet died in the Lordon Saturday morning (July 14, 2001) at the Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center of Laurium after a three month illness.
Thomas was born in Calumet, MI on October 5, 1917, the son of the late Michael and Rose Vichich. He was one of 6 children and proudly served our country during World War II with the Aviation Engineer Division, doing his 4 year tour of duty in the Pacific Theater. A graduate of Michigan Tech and the University of Michigan, he taught at Michigan Tech for 40 years, retiring in 1981. In 1960, he was named "Teacher of the Year" and after retirement, Michigan Tech honored him with "Professor Emeritus." The dynamic and enthusiasic professor literally touched thousands of young lives during those 40 years, many remembering him long after his retirement, also their own retirements. Teachng the young was his singular passion and gifted chrisma.
Thomas married the former Margaret D. Hribjan of Ahmeek on Nov. 17, 1945 and she preceded him in death on February 23, 1992. They had 2 sons FR Michael T. Vichich, Pastor of St. John Neumann Parish in Hermansville/ Spalding, MI and Mark J. Vichich, of Ahmeek. He was also the proud granpa of Megan and Emily Vichich and step- grandchildren, Steven Mauno, children of Mark and his wife, Jodi (Westerberg). He is survived by all of them and sisters, Rose Vichich of Calumet and Mary (Dick) Molaski of Houghto Lake and brothers, Michael F. Vichich of Danville, IL and Steven (Isabelle) Vichich of Laurium and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Vichich.
After his retirement, Thomas took care of his wife until her death, then he moved to the Spalding Rectory where he resided for the past 4 years with his son, Fr. Michael, joining in parish life there and "Ministering" in his own joyful style to the parish family of his son.
Dedicated to his wife, children and grandchildren and his faith, he will be sorely missed by them and the many students he taught and tutored over the course of those many years.
According to his wished, Thomas was cremated and the full Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. John Neumann Church in Spalding, MI on Thursday (July 19, 2001) at 11:00 AM CDT and on Friday (July 20, 2001) at St. Paul the Apostle Church of Calumet at 11:00 EST to accomodate the many people who knew, loved, and respected Thomas in both those areas.
There will be a visitation in each church 2 hours before each funeral mass with picture board and the cremains present for those to come and remember and celebrate hs life with us.
Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek.
Bernard Dubinsky
DUNEDIN, FLORIDA -- Bernard Dubinsky, 79, of 1461 Summer Isle, Dunedin, Florida, died on July 14 at the VA Hospice in Bay Pines, FL. He was born in Ishpeming, graduated from the Ishpeming High School, class of 1941. He served in the army in Europe during World War II. He managed "Dubinskys" prior to moving to Florida in 1983. Bernard was a founding member of Temple Beth Sholem.
Survivors include his wife, Doris of 48 years, daughers Diane Eskitt (Paul), Riverside, CA; Susan Davis (Bruce), Mendota Heights, MN, Carol Ehrenhalt (Lou), Roswell, GA, five grandsons, Mitch, Greg, Bradley, Jason, Ben, and twin granddaughters Allison and Rachael, brother Irwin, Westlake, Village, CA, sister Beverly Levine, Mission Viejo, CA. Burial will be at the Bushnell National Cemetery.

L'ANSE -- Gloria Watters, age 91, of L'Anse, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2001 at her childhood home surrounded by her family.
The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, July 21, at 11:00 a.m., at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. The visitation will be on Friday from 6-9:00 p.m., with parish prayers recited at 8:30 p.m., at the Jacobson Funeral Home, and on Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. Fr. Greg Heikkala will officiate. Burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of arrangement.
Harry E. Hanford
MARQUETTE -- Harry E. Hanford, 75, of 904 Ward Street, Marquette, entered eternal life early Monday morning, July 16, 2001, at his home in the care and comfort of his family and Lake Superior Hospice. Harry was born November 25, 1925 in Marquette, a son of the late Harry and Dorothy (Lenore) Hanford and was a lifelong Marquette resident. On May 5, 1951 he married Barbara J. Normand in the former St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Marquette. Harry was employed as an equipment painter with Lake Shore Inc. from 1949-1987 when he retired. At the same time he was also employed part-time at Marquette's Park Cemetery. Harry's family always came first and he especially enjoyed the time spent with his grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and sharing time with his canine companions, Gypsy, Cocoa, and Jasmine. Harry was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church. A loving husband, father, proud grandparent, and brother, he is survived by: his wife of 50 years, Barbara J. Hanford; four daughters, Becky Hanford, Kathy (Joe) Lampman, Patti (Robert) LaTourneau, and Barbara (Dan) Tanner all of Marquette; his grandchildren, Kristi (Terry) Flynn, Joe Lampman III, Jason Gauthier, Jim Lampman, Angie Gauthier, John Lampman, and Thomas LaTourneau; a sister, Shirley Aanstad of Milwaukee, WI; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by a grandson, Timothy LaTourneau; and brothers, Robert, Francis, and Richard Hanford. Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Thursday, July 19, from 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening in St. Michael Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick, pastor, as celebrant. A dessert luncheon will follow in St. Michael's Parish Center. Burial will be made in the Northland Chapel Gardens.

CHATHAM -- Harry W. Johnson, age 81, of Oglethorpe, Georgia and formerly of Slapneck, died on Sunday, July 15, 2001 at the Peake Health Care Center in Macon, Georgia. The funeral will be on Saturday, July 21, 2001 at 12 noon at the Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Eben. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral services. Complete arrangements will be announced by the Bowerman Funeral Home.
