Peter P. Shusta
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND -- Peter Shusta, age 93, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at a nursing home in Baltimore, MD.
He was preceded in death by his wife Anna, who passed in September 2000, after 65 years of marriage. His survivors include two sons, Bernard of Adrian, MI and Ronald of Baltimore, MD; eight grandchildren and thirteen great- grandchildren.
Peter was active in St. Anthony Church of Gwinn, and in The Marquette County Knights of Columbus. He served as Financial Secretary of the Gwinn Council for over a decade, and then as Faithful Navigator of the Marquette 4th Degree Assembley.
Funeral services and burial will be held in Baltimore on Tuesday, July 31, 2001. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony Church, Gwinn, MI.
Wayne "Boozzer" Barrett
NEW SWANZY, MI -- Wayne N. "Boozzer" Barrett, 64, of 44 E. Stephenson Ave., New Swanzy, died Friday morning, July 27, 2001 at his home. Mr. Barrett was born February 8, 1937 in Sears Location, MI to the late Harold and Helen (Jensen) Barrett and has been a lifelong resident of New Swanzy. Boozzer was formerly employed by the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company at the Empire Mine. He enjoyed working in the woods, fishing, playing cribbage and spending time with his nieces, nephews and friends.
Surviving Boozzer are a brother, Rollie (Virginia) Barrett of Milwaukee, WI; sisters-in-law Donna and Betty Barrett, both of Gwinn; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by ten siblings, John, Hans, Roy, Mike, Carlo, Ray, Ruth, Oscar, Pat and Lee.
Friends may call at the Gwinn Funeral Home on Monday from 3pm until 6pm. Funeral services will be held at 6pm Monday in the funeral home with Rev. David Mair officiating. Interment will take place in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family would like to give special thanks to Paula Saari and the staff at Brookridge, Lake Superior Hospice Association and the Barrett family for their help, which allowed Mr. Barrett to remain at home during his illness.
Dr. Ray E. Johnson
NEGAUNEE -- Dr. Ray E. Johnson, age 75, of 1109 Keewaydin St. Negaunee died at 12:05 AM on Saturday, July 28,2001 at the Eastwood Nursing Center.
Ray was born Sept. 21,1925 in Gwinn, the son of the late C. Leander & Esther J. (Sundberg) Johnson and was a 1943 graduate of Negaunee High School. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WWII having served in the European theatre as a sergeant. He attended Northern Michigan University and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, graduating magna cum laude in 1952. He practiced dentistry in Negaunee for 42 years. He and his wife of 51 years, Mary Jane (Nicholls), raised 3 children.
Dr. Johnson was a member of various organizations & honor societies. He earned a Boy Scout Eagle Scout Badge and was a 32nd degree Mason. Membership in organizations included the Negaunee City Band, the Negaunee Elks, the V.A. Romo Post V.F.W. #3165, the Vasa Lodge, the Negaunee Historical Society, the Ahmed Shrine, & various Dental & Health Care associations. He served for 12 years on the Negaunee Board of Education, for 25 years as a director of the Miners First National Bank. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Negaunee Senior Citizen Center and the Little Shag Lake Association of Gwinn. He was involved in the Nursing Home Industry since 1972 as a founder and CEO of Norlite Nursing Center of Marquette and with his wife Mary as the founder & CEO of Eastwood Nursing Center of Negaunee. Dr. Johnson was devoted to his family. He enjoyed going to camp, hunting, fishing, gardening, writing poetry, photography, philosophizing, and working on his various projects. Throughout the years he touched many lives.
Surviving are his daughter, Linda Rae (Edwin) Buck, of Gwinn, two sons; Eric (Elise) Johnson, of Merrill, Wl, and Lee (Susan) Johnson,of Negaunee. Eight grandchildren include David, Karl, and Meredith Buck; Darren and Blake Johnson; and Wayne, Ray, and C. Leander Johnson, his sister, Ruth Jouppi, Negaunee. Other survivors include in-laws, nieces, nephews, and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary on April 15, 2000, his grandson Landon Buck, and 2 brothers; Ture & Rune Johnson.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at Mitchell United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Harmon & Rev. John J. Shiverski officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives & friends from 5-8 PM on Tuesday at the Koskey Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Negaunee Area Community Fund in Dr. Ray's & Mrs. Mary Johnson's memory.
Edna S. Johnson
Edna S. Johnson, 94, formerly of 390 W. Terrace St., died Friday, July 27, 2001 at 513 Summit St. where she had been living the past year. She was born November 24,1906 in Negaunee to John and Hilja (Kalmi) Tamminen and had lived in this area all her life. She was a graduate of Marquette High School, and a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Harvey Homemakers, and Carpenter's Auxiliary. She enjoyed being a homemaker and playing bingo.
Edna is survived by a daughter Elry (Jim) Reetz and a son Dale (Darla) Johnson, both of Marquette,12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband S. Leonard Johnson in 1979 and a son Alton Johnson in 1981.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, August 1, 2001 in the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Bernard and Rev. Chrys Levesque officiating. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens with Loren and Kurt Reetz, Leonard and Glenn Johnson, Sandy Wasmuth and Janet Anderson acting as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Leanne Vance, Jon Reetz and Tina Johnson. Visitation will begin Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Memorials can be made to Messiah Lutheran Church.
Eugene 'Mello' Korpi
SUOMI LOCATION -- Eugene 'Mello' Korpi, 72, of County Road ML, Suomi Location died at 2:55 AM on Saturday, July 28, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital.
Mr. Korpi was born March 4,1929 in Palmer to John & Olga (Helander) Korpi, was a graduate of Negaunee High School, and was a life long Richmond Township resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked as a self-employed mason and enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. He attended Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Suomi Location.
Surviving are his wife Helen M. (Johnson), 2 daughters; Carol Jean (Larry) Spahr, Dayton, OH, Joyce Pleau, Negaunee, 5 grandchildren; Tiffany & Ethan Spahr, Sarah & Billie-Jo Korpi, & Katie Pleau,1 sister, Gertrude Neste, Gwinn, 1 brother, Jack (Karen 'Kasey') Korpi, Gwinn, several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Bill E. Korpi in 1978, an infant brother Eugene, and brother Leslie Korpi.

Fred W. Schaefer
MARQUETTE --Fred W. Schaefer, 58, of 131 W. Prospect St., died Saturday, July 28, 2001 at his home.
Born April 20,1943 in lowa City, lowa, his parents were Dr. Walter H. and Margaret (Vandervort) Schaefer. At a young age, Fred lived in lowa, Texas and Washington before moving to Marquette in 1946. He was a 1961 graduate of John D. Pierce High School and a 1967 graduate of NMU, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in business administration and a minor in speech. Following graduation he served with the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam era. He married June Myllyla on July 27,1968 at Messiah Lutheran Church and briefly lived in Decatur, IL before returning to the Marquette area in 1969. His employment was in the field of retail management with both J.C. Penney and Montgomery Ward, sales with F.W. Means and Co., and real estate sales and appraisal in the Marquette area. He was also a professional ski instructor at Marquette Mountain.
His community activities included coaching both junior hockey and youth basketball. He was an active member of the National Ski Patrol System, serving as Patrol Leader at Cliffs Ridge Ski Hill, as a member of the NSPS Central United States Testing Committee and as the NSPS Central/Western U.P. Section Chief. Later he earned membership in the Professional Ski Instructors of American. In addition, he organized and led the Marquette Alger Special Olympics Alpine Ski Program at Marquette Mountain for 13 years, and in 1996 was named the Outstanding Area Coach by Michigan Special Olympics. He was a member of Marquette Elks Lodge #405, the American Legion Jopling Post #44, where he was an active member of the Building Committee, and the Sons of the American Legion. For 14 years he served in leadership roles with the American Legion 4th of July Committee, and especially enjoyed coordinating the parade, which he did through 1999.
Fred is survived by his wife Dr. June M. Schaefer, a son Dean, a daughter Kim, a sister Margaret"Evie"(Mike) Szalkowski of Green Bay, Wl, his mother Margaret of Marquette, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death in 1957 by his father Dr. Walter H. Schaefer, who taught sciences at NMU, and in 1999 by his sister Nel Bonifas.
Memorial services will be held at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, August 1, 2001 in the Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Tim Bernard officiating. Visitation will begin at the church at 4:00 PM Wednesday. Burial will be in Park Cemetery. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Marquette Community Foundation, where a fund will be established for persons with special needs; or the NMU Development Fund, where a scholarship will be established. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Linda, Jamie and Sue of the Lake Superior Hospice staff.
Ilene M. Frederickson
WALLACE -- Ilene M. Fredrickson age 79 formerly of Wallace passed away Saturday July 28, 2001 in Stephenson. The former Ilene Plutchak was born in Devils Creek, Mi. to the late Robert and Jessie (Deacon) PLutchak on Novenber 7, 1921. She married Howard Fredrickson March 18,1944 in Michigamme, Michigan. He preceded her in death March 23,1997. Ilene was a caregiver at Roubal Nursing Home and Luther Home. She later operated an adult foster care home. She was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church of Wallace. She was also a graduate of Stambaugh High School. Ilene enjoyed family gatherings, brook trout fishing, playing cards, travel, and dancing.
Survivors include: 1 son: Howard (Kelly) of Stephenson 4 daughters: Donna (Don Schmelling) Maegaard of Kenosha, Wi. Barbara (Steve) Anderson of Wadsworth, IL. Ruth (Keith) Thoune of Wallace, Mi. Wendy (Roger) Bolter of Kenosha, Wi.13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 2 brothers: Norman (Judy) Plutchak of Cedar River, Mi., Robert Plutchak of Yuma, Az., 2 sisters: Anita Kaim of Covington, La. Eva Kaim of Clinton, Ia., 1 sister in law: Marjorie (Richard) Lindholm of Bloomington, Mn. She was preceded in death by a sister Imogene Foy.

Jean Giotto Hocking
GAINESVILLE, FL -- Jean Giotto Hocking, 69, North Lake native, died Junes 13, 2000 in the University of Florida Shand's Medical Facility where she had been hospitalized since January following surgery for lung cancer.
The youngest of eight children, Jean was born July 20, 1930 to the late Peter and Rosina Giotto of North lake. She attended the North Lake elementary school and graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1948. She married William Hocking of Negaunee in 1950 and lived in North Lake until moving with her family to Ishpeming where she worked at the Gozzard Manufacturing Plant, the Wisconsin Bearing Co. and in the housekeeping department of Bell Memorial Hospital until retiring in 1987. She and her husband were active members of St. John's Catholic Church in Ishpeming and the Holy Faith Catholic Church in Gainesville. Jean and William loved to travel and visit with their children and grandchildren in Texas and Florida, eventually making their permanent home in Gainesville. For several years Jean was an active participant in her husband's care, both while at home and while he was hospitalized with Alzheimer's in the Lake City, FL Veteran's Hospital. He died in 1996.After William's death, Jean formed a daily walking club and held membership in a sports facility in Gainesville.
A devoted and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, she is survived by 4 sons; Dr. Michael P. (Debbie) Hocking of Gainesville, Terry J. (Helen) Hocking of Plano, TX, John A. (Theresa) Hocking of Coppell, TX and eight grandchildren; Lisa, Christopher, Kathie, Rebecca, Heather, Tanner, Sarah, and Brett. (Grace E. is due in July) She is also survived by three sisters, Marie Voet and Nellie Gaball of Marquette and Ida (William) Medlyn of Bloomington, Indiana; three brothers, Joseph (Irene) Giotto of North Lake and Bruno (Mary) Giotto and Charles (Priscilla) Giotto of Negaunee and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Julie in 1936. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, 10AM at the Negaunee Cemetery with Fr. James Challancin, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church to officiate. The Racine Funeral Chapel of Ishpeming is handling the arrangements.
Martha E. Sturos
LAURIUM -- Martha E. Sturos, 91, of Laurium, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2001 at the Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center in Laurium.
She was born on March 30, 1910, a daughter of Tuomas and Justina (Finni) Ulvinen in Humboldt, MI and attended the local schools. Martha worked in in Glencoe, IL for eight years prior to her marriage to Arne Sturos on June 29, 1935 and the couple resided in Laurium. Martha was a member of the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet. Her husband Arne preceded her in death on April 30, 1960. Also preceding her in death were her parents, her step-father, Leo Niskala, a son, Thomas in October of 1960, seven sisters, Vera Daavettila, Saima Jackola, Helen Huotari, Julia Lyitkainen, Ruth Filipowitz, Elsa Ulvinen, Sylvia Niskala, three brothers, Jalmer, Gust and Paul Niskala. Surviving are 3 daughters, Marianne (Arnold) Peterson of Calumet, Kathleen (James) Keplinger of Marquette, Carol (Lowell) Plough of Woodinville, WA, 2 sons, Robert (Maria), John (Carol) both of Laurium, 2 sisters, Miriam Hoover of Glencoe, IL, Vienna Leppen of Waukegan, IL, 52 grandchildren, 162 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral services for Mrs. Sturos will be held 11 AM Tuesday in the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet with Pastor Richard Eskola officiating. Interment will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet. Friends may call from 3 - 9 PM Monday in the Peterson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. William J. Hocking
GAINESVILLE, FL -- William J. Hocking of Gainesville and former Ishpeming resident, died November 9, 1996 of a heart attack at the Lake City Veteran's Hospital in Lake City, FL where he had been a patient since August 1995. He had been ill with Alzheimer's disease for several years prior to his hospitalization.
Born July 16, 1925 in Negaunee, he graduated from the Negaunee High School in 1943. From January 1944 to June 1946 he served in the U.S. Army Infantry Division in the Europian Theatre & obtained the rank of Tech Sergeant #4. In 1950, he married the former Jean Giotto of Norht Lake. He worked for the Inland Steel Co. until its closure in 1965. He then began working for the CCI Co. & retired from its Tilden Mine in 1987 as supervisor of materials control. Mr. Hocking was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Martin J. Lassila Post & St. John's Catholic Church in Ishpeming.
Survivors include his widow Jean; 4 sons; Dr. Michael of Gainesville, FL, Terry of Plano, TX, John of Cappell, TX, and Ronald of North Dallas, TX; a sister, Margaret Gdanic; a brother, Gordon of Beaverton, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, and a brother.
Memorial Services will be held Friday, 10 AM at the Negaunee Cemetery with Fr. James Challancin, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church to officiate. The Racine Funeral Chapel of Ishpeming is handling the arrangements.
Carmen Cecilia Freitas Burks
SCOTTSDALE, AZ -- Carmen Cecilia Freitas Burks passed away July 28, peacefully in Scottsdale, AZ. Carmen was born March 21, 1929 in Ishpeming, MI to Leo and Blanche Gatien. She was 72 years old.
Carmen worked in banking for many years. She was an active member in the community. She loved doing arts & crafts, such as painting, quilting, sewing and ceramics. She loved to travel and spend time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Wymon Burks; daughter Debra Lo Giudice of Santa Cruz, CA; son, Kevin Freitas of Brussels, Belgium; brother, Robert of Granite Bay, CA; sisters Blanche Nault of Side Lake, MN and Rita Russell of Kerrville, Texas. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Jason and Danielle Lo Guidice of Santa Cruz, CA and Nais and Luna Freitas of Brussels Belgium.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Abel Freitas of Santa Cruz, CA. A memorial service will be held at The Holy Cross Cemetery in Santa Cruz, CA at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer Assoc. of your choice.

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL -- Dean M. Chilson, 78, of Port Charlotte, FL, and former Newberry resident, died Thursday, July 26, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 2, 2001 at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Newberry with Pastor Jack Kolbe officiating. Inurnment will take place at Indian Springs Cemetery in Punta Gorda, Florida.

George Nickel
KING, WI - George Nickel, who was born and raised in Traunik, Michigan, has died at King Veteran's Hospital in King, Wisconsin. He was born to Henry and Olga Nickel in May of 1930 and died July 27, 2001 after a very long illness. Visitation will be at the Valley Funeral Home in Appleton, WI from 4:00 to 8:00pm Monday.

WENTWORTH, MO -- Summer McMillan resident, Herbert L. Hawley, 72, of Wentworth, MO, died Thursday, July 26, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital.

VERO BEACH, FL -- Hilma C. Biederstadt, 84, of Vero Beach, FL, died July 29, 2001 at Indian Memorial Hospital, Vero Beach, FL, after a prolonged illness. She was born December 9, 1916 in Negaunee, Michigan, and moved to Vero Beach in 1969, from Glenwood, Illinois.
Mrs. Biederstadt was a beautician at Tropical Hair Fashion, Vero Beach for 3 years. She was a member of Grange in Fellsmere, FL and a member of the VFW Auxiliary #10210 of Sebastian. Surviving are her son, Gerald F. Luoma of Macon, GA; daughter, Judith Peterson of Vero Beach, FL; brother, Paul Johnson of Skandia, MI; sister, Pauline Miller of Manistique, MI; 6 grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren; and 2 great- great- grandchildren.
At the family's request, there will be no visitation. A celebration of her life will be held at 1 pm, Wednesday at the VFW Post #10210, Sebastian, FL.

MARQUTTE -- Jeffery "Jeff" LaChapelle, Jr., 92, of 207 Jackson Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday afternoon, July 29, 2001, at his home in the care and comfort of his family. He had been in ill health for the past six weeks. Born October 25, 1908 in Marquette, a son of the late Jeffery and Alvina (Brunelle) LaChapelle, Sr., he was a lifelong Marquette resident. On August 18, 1931 he married the former Dora Beauchamp in St. Anthony Catholic Church in Gwinn, and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family. Jeff and Dora were very devoted to each other and their marriage, rooted in their faith and based on sharing and caring, was to span more than 65 years and produce a very close-knit family. For more than 40 years, Jeff was employed as a steam engineer and hoist operator for the Marquette Dock Company (Coal Dock), retiring in 1973. Jeff's family was his pride and joy, especially his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His other interests included traveling and playing cards, especially cribbage, having belonged to the Men's Cribbage League for a time. He was a member of the former St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and currently a member of St. Peter Cathedral. A loving and caring father, proud grandparent, and loving brother, he is survived by: a daughter, Carol (Jerry) LaBine of Beaver Grove; a son-in-law, Neal Green of Marquette; his grandchildren, Todd (Paula) Green, Patrick (Jennifer) Green, Julie Green, Cynthia (Thomas) DePetro, Jeffery (Laura) Green, Brett (Leanne) LaBine, Ricky LaBine, and Ryan LaBine; great-grandchildren, Chelse LaBine, Ian Green, Todd Neal Green, Dustin Green, Chandler Green, Raquel Green, Joshua Green, Justine Green, Jacob Green, Stephanie Mell, Steven Mell, Shannon Mell, Tom "Tad" DePetro, Alicia DePetro, Kayleigh Green, and Cameron Jeffery Green; three sisters, Evelyn Maki, Lucille (Charles) Smedman, and Shirley (Robert) Holman all of Marquette; two brothers, Adrian LaChapelle of Marquette and George LaChapelle of Farmington Hills; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. ENGADINE -- Lorraine A. Wagner, 68, of Engadine, died Sunday morning July 29, 2001 at her residence under the loving care of her family and Northwoods Home Health and Hospice.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 1, 2001 at 11:00 am at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Engadine with Rev. John Walker officiating. Interment will follow at the Engadine Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church on Tuesday, July 31 from 5-8 pm and also one hour before services on Wednesday.
